Gosling and Mendes at Niagara Falls

Posted on June 07, 2012

Darlings, here are some very pretty celebrities for you to look at and then judge. Okay, so technically, they’re not “on the street,” but “Pair at Niagara Falls” is a bit unwieldy and specific for a new post category.

Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes visit Niagara Falls.

Not much to say about his outfit except he needs to invest in a good pill shaver.

Her dress would be cute if it was belted. As it is, it looks amazingly unflattering. Then again, we don’t quite understand why someone would wear a dress like this (with accompanying platform shoes and beaded bag) for a day trip to Niagara Falls. Also, while we realize this isn’t a public appearance and thus not subject to our normal brand of picayune bitchery, the fact that her bag, shoes, and dress all don’t match or go with each other is a little eye-twitch-inducing.

Not loving her sunglasses with this outfit,  but love that dress. It’s just the type of thing I like to wear in the summer.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Agree except the shoes throw the whole “easy breezy” off – that, and walking next to a guy dressed for fall.

        • MilaXX

true, I’d probably wear a cute pair of wedges if I was just hanging out.

They don’t look at all like they’re enjoying each other’s company. I would gladly take her place with a great big smile on my face!....CBCJobGetPosition.notlong.com

        • kimmeister

I’d be afraid of a breeze in that dress!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

It is like she lost her luggage and the hotel found something for her to wear.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

All I can think of here as that they are both making a conscious effort to look as little like stars as they can manage.

      • NCDFan

My thoughts exactly. There’s a certain anonymity in wearing clothes that are not designed to call attention to themselves.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Right. Cause those are “I’m blending in” shoes if I ever saw them. :)

    • http://twitter.com/BMoke28 Bernadette Moke

      They don’t look happy together!

      • mom2ajs5

That’s what I thought too. They don’t look at all like they’re enjoying each other’s company. I would gladly take her place with a great big smile on my face!

I can’t tell if you’re joking or being serious, but I know which one I’m hoping for.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Could be they just want to be able to do something outside of their homes without being hounded by photographers.  I know that’s the price they pay, but it’s gotta get old, real fast.

        • calimon

Ya, but do they (particularly she) have to dress like f-ing movie stars? Like T-Lo sort of stated, they stick out like sore thumbs the way they’re dressed. Could’ve just thrown on anonymous hooded sweatshirt and tennis.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can’t say that either of them look especially “starred out” to me. Then again, I see women and men dressed like this fairly often, living in SF, as I do.

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I agree that it must be a terrible thing to be stalked like that. But there are certain celebrities that will make a deal with the photographers — I’ll stop and pose so you can get your pictures, then leave me alone. That seems to be the best way to handle it if you have the time to do it.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It does seem a logical method of dealing with the realities of stardom, in a sensible way.

          • Beardslee

A friend of mine who lives in NYC and sees celebrities all the time says that they give off different vibes at different times; sometimes she can tell they’re up for being accosted by fans and sometimes they just want to be left alone.  Maybe these two just wanted to be left alone that day.

      • 3boysful

Perhaps if they were to flash the ol’ pearly whites, the blinding whiteness of Hollywood teeth would blow their cover.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

don’t forget the glasses that add to the total ‘eye twitchery’ look…brrrr… he looks like a solid 8 or 9 next to “that”. ick.
I still don’t understand a tshirt under a sweat tho?

    • RebeccaKW

This dress is very unflattering on her.  I’m sure it’ll start pregnancy rumors.  Also, I agree-this is not a dress you wear sightseeing around anywhere, let alone Niagara Falls.   I hate the shoes.

He looks pretty good.  I wish he’d worn a belt, especially since you can see his belt loops.

      • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I was just about to post that the dress makes her look pregnant.  There are people that can wear floaty dresses like that and she’s not one of them.  The purse matches the sunglasses…and nothing else..

      • shirab

I was just about to say that if I were going to Niagara, I wouldn’t wear a floaty dress and chunky shoes. It’s wet and windy there! But maybe they weren’t planning a ride on the Maid of the Mist.

She does have killer calf muscles, though.

        • luciaphile

And the paths and sidewalks are usually slick as hell up there too. Those are not the shoes to wear at Niagara Falls and that is definitely not a dress to wear on the Maid of the Mist (if they did do that) although they usually give you the oh-so-charming rain slicker to wear.

      • Aurumgirl

I don’t understand–why wouldn’t someone wear a dress like that on a hot day, in a place like Niagara Falls?  I live in the Niagara area, I avoid it when I can because the place is overrun by a million tourists day in day out.  It’s an impassable route, but being stuck in a gridlock through the city means you get a good hard look at humanity.  There is no “one way” that people dress to be there–they’re in sweats or shorts or outrageously expensive clothing or bathing suits or bridal wear or parkas and boots (yup, some Americans actually think crossing the border into Canada means snow year round) what have you.  Believe me, these two would definitely blend in to the crowd in a way that would make them pretty much anonymous.   They’re like any other tourist in that they put on what came out of the luggage first, with no thought to matching accessories or sweater pills.  It’s kind of endearing.  It’s also clothing that’s perfectly fine for the weather we’re getting here lately (though today, they’d be overwhelmed with the heat in those clothes, even if Ryan removed that sweater).

        • RebeccaKW

Personally, I don’t like to wear dresses when I’m spending a lot of time outside b/c of the wind.  Constantly being worried that my skirt is going to fly up is not something I want to be concerned with all day.  Maybe a dress that had a stiffer skirt, that I could get behind.

          • Aurumgirl

Niagara Falls isn’t always windy, sometimes its very muggy and hot as blazes (as it is here today). Days like today a breezy, lightweight, summer dress is perfect. Got one on now!

    • http://twitter.com/predecessors Rina

Tell me I’m not the only one who finds a photo of the 6’11” Ryan Gosling in front of a sign saying ‘You must be 42” to ride alone’ to be amusing.

      • http://twitter.com/algaechick algaechick

I’m taller than 42″. Do I get to ride?

        • http://twitter.com/hdl_b Heather Barkman

          My thoughts exactly!

      • Asmith610

        There’s no way he’s 6′ 11″ !  Maybe you meant 6′ 1″  Funny sign though.

    • http://twitter.com/observacious Kim Z Dale

“You must be this tall to ride alone.” Perhaps that’s why Eva is in those platform heels.

    • http://twitter.com/yifatshaik yifat shaik

i kinda like the dress shape (hate the print), it’s for a day that I just don’t want to wear anything that will be too tight. the shoes are ugly

    • Carlodog

Why couldn’t she add a red hair ribbon?  It’s the only color not in her outfit.  Yikes, nothing goes together.

    • TieDye64

She’s making sure she stands out in the crowd, isn’t she? Not exactly incognito. Her getup is a very, very odd choice for a Niagara Falls outing.

    • kamo12

I am somewhat embarrassed that I know this, but hey I’ve checked dlisted already today. They went to his mother’s graduation and are wearing the same outfits they wore to the ceremony (meaning she’s appropriately dressed and he is underdressed.)

      Like so: http://bit.ly/Nk78m5

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Right dress, wrong shoes. If she’d gone with a cute pair of black gladiator joints, she’d have been alright. I don’t even mind the lack of belt as much as i mind those ugly shoes.

      • amywinns

Personally, I am never going think gladiator shoes are a better choice than almost anything…. but especially not with this dress. I think her choice of neutral/brown shoe is way preferable, and glad it’s a shade other than the ubiquitous “nude”.

    • annie_wonder

Why would such a tiny girl wear a muumuu?

    • MoHub

      Niagara Falls! Niagara Falls!

Slowly I turned. Step by step, inch by inch…

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I was thinking of going there!  You saved me the Stooges journey, bless ya!

        • MoHub

Glad you were thinking of that as well and resisted. I personally couldn’t stop myself.

Girl’s got FIERCE calf muscles though…

    • vanjar

Hey look! Someone else who also loves Lacoste and wears it too. :)

    • CatherineRhodes

Her outfit is ludicrous and he desperately needs a neck shave. Ugh, just about the least flattering shot I’ve seen of these two. (Her calf muscles look like an Eastern European gymnast’s.)

    • Lilithcat

      When is she due?

    • judybrowni

At first glance, I assumed she was pregnant, although the height of those heels would be tempting a miscarriage.

Hey, I have those sunglasses! Bought them at the 99 cent store.

    • foggywood

I believe they were attending his mother’s graduation for her teacher’s degree.  I’m sure they were doing their best not to pull attention away from Mom’s day.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

But then – why is she wearing a just-over-the-cooter length silk beach coverup as a dress, and platform heels? That is NOT what I’d wear around my boyfriend’s family in any case, let alone if I were there for a significant event.

    • 3boysful

I thought her dress was a cute pool/beach coverup.  Which makes it even more incongruous next to his cozy sweater.

      • calimon

        Incongruous — that’s the word.

    • jw_ny

It looks like they’re going on the Sky Wheel (ferris wheel) ride at NF…which in itself doesn’t involve much walking.  Her shoes and dress just don’t seem to be conducive to sight-seeing throughout NF in general though.  Perhaps they were doing lunch and casinos..who knows?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

That makes somewhat more sense. From what I remember of my own visit to NF when I was 12, a boat trip out to the falls involved wearing a rain poncho and still getting soaked with blasting spray. A silk poolside coverup (what she appears to be wearing) would not fare well under those circumstances.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

      the bag matches the sunglasses!
with the breeze/wind up there, why would you wear a dress that’s constantly going to be fluttering up and showing off your panties?

    • KATHRYN WHITE

They were visiting the area for Gosling’s mom’s convocation at Brock University (in St. Catharines, near Niagara Falls): http://www.torontosun.com/2012/06/07/ryan-gosling-takes-eva-mendes-to-moms-brock-graduation.

Unf. That is one fine looking man.

Oh yeah, and his outfit’s OK too, I guess.

    • http://twitter.com/starlounging Ann M. Erickson

Her knees look like they hurt in those shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/katshimmers Kat Wright

I work and live in Niagara Falls. I am DEVO I didn’t see them! ARGH!

    • Tracy_Flick

She looks like she just got her hair done, and forgot to take off the smock. He looks fine.

    • lilibetp

Is she pregnant?  Or is it just that the dress is horrifically unflattering?

    • golspie

How does she do it? She’s like a very, very dull, very, very bland Raquel Welch.

    • VioletFem

Honestly, when celebrities are just walking on the street and not making any kind of special appearance, I don’t mind seeing that not every accessory that they are wearing matches perfectly. In fact, I can of like it. While nothing will beat an amazing looking outfit, it is nice to see celebs wearing wearing something they clearly threw together just before they left their home.

    • SpcilK

She does not dress well, period, point balnk, end of story!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I saw this photo else where and thought “damn, she looks pregnant”.  She definitely should have belted it.

    • Fordzo

Is she wearing bike shorts under that thing?

    • kittenwithaquip

Ryan Gosling is wearing a pilly old Lacoste sweater, and everyone is bitching about what Eva Mendes is wearing? Her legs are amazing, and that dress probably looked different when  she tried it on in front of her mirror. In motion it clings, but I bet it looked breezy and comfortable when she pulled it out of the back of her closet. She probably wanted something that would hide any bloat from an on-vacation cheeseburger. It would have looked cute with a little black flat with an ankle strap, and she’s got the calves to pull off an ankle strap (e.g., not making them look like cankle straps). Though it would have looked better without the sleeves.

Eh, they’re two lovebirds out to do a touristy thing. No matter what they wear, they’re still Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, and I doubt they give a shit what we think of their outfits.

      • formerlyAnon

“Ryan Gosling is wearing a pilly old Lacoste sweater, and everyone is bitching about what Eva Mendes is wearing?”
        What I was thinking!

    • AmandaCathleen

Who wears shoes like that to sight see at Niagara Falls?? I often like her street style, but on this occasion I think she looks ridiculous.

      • Aurumgirl

LOTS and LOTS of people wear shoes like that to sight see in Niagara Falls.  And it turns out they had other plans.

    • Elizabeth Anderson

She’s a bit dressed up because it was Ryan’s Mom’s graduation from Brock University in St. Catharines!

    • Candigirl1968

I think Eva’s trying to have the bag match without being spot on because it, too, is purple.  The same goes with the glasses, which have a hint of purple in the blue.  The components are clunky, though, and lack harmony.  The dress is trying to be effortless (hence no belt), but it is more of a fall breezy than a summer lightness.  Pairing the dress with summer shoes just makes it feel even more wrong for the season (whereas some flip-flops might have worked better).  Thus, there are a whole bunch of elements that someone tried to pull together with some thought, but executed them really clumsily.

    • HengRu

The word “schmatte” sprang to mind unbidden when I saw the first photo.

    • Candigirl1968

The smile on her face at the graduation is adorable.  You are right – he’s terribly under-dressed.  If my adult parent graduated from school, I would make some extra effort.

    • Candigirl1968

The smile on her face at the graduation is adorable.  You are right – he’s terribly under-dressed.  If my adult parent graduated from school, I would make some extra effort.

      • amywinns

But if he dressed up more, it would draw more attention. Families at graduation ceremonies don’t usually dress up, do they? He looks very tidy and put-together, save the ever-present scruff, not hipsterish at all — so I do think he did make a thoughtful extra effort to fit in with the audience.

        • mountainFashionista

Families usually do dress up for graduation, especially if they go out to eat afterwards.

          • amywinns

I guess that’s a YMMV. Jeans, a nice light sweater and a summer dress would have fit in well in the audiences at all the graduations I’ve attended. The graduate (sometimes me) maybe does a little more. I did wear a suit at my college convocation, since there were no gowns, but no one else in my family did. … though now that I think of it, I’m from Georgia, so it’s always pretty warm whenever graduating is happening..

            • Candigirl1968

If my mother took the time to go back to school and get a degree, I think I’d take the time to put on a pair of slacks, even if I planned to sight see later that day.

    • Rand Ortega

GAH! That sign should say ‘You must be more fashionable than THIS to ride alone’.

    • calimon

Thanks for the 411. Now that makes more sense. I will retract my previous statement/criticism about them being inappropriately dressed for their visit to the Falls.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJHCEFC7S5WYITH3D5ORYGS56I amye

Ryan looks perfectly fine.  She looks great for a 5+ month pregnant woman.  What?  She’s not pregnant?

      Oh….

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

       I still don’t think she’s appropriately dressed for her boyfriend’s mother’s graduation. She’s wearing a pool cover-up.

      • formerlyAnon

Depends, as has been said, on the graduation. But if she’s taking her cues from him (and it’s his family occasion), she’s on the verge of being overdressed.

    • Melissa Brogan

I hate her shoes. And bag. And dress.

      Ugh.

    • Lilak

Who wears shoes like this doing the tourist thing at Niagara Falls?!

Never mind….I sometimes forget how Hollywood ladies (and their, um, ilk?) consider heels of all kinds de rigeur as casual footwear.

    • http://twitter.com/PumpsAndGloss Pumps and Gloss

I love the sunglasses, but c’est tout!!

    • amywinns

I was going to say something similar, but you beat me to it. But rather than say he was “not making an effort” I think he was trying to be relatively bland and ordinary - as MK pointed out on Dlisted, he apparently made a multi-level effort to keep the spotlight off him and on the graduates (of which his mother was just one). In that light, she, OTOH is a little showy with the big print and the big shoes. (And I’m not an Eva hater.)

    • allisankelly

Look at her calves in those shoes. (I am so over platform wedges) She could hurt someone with that muscle!!! Cute dress, and she looks comfy. I don’t like the blue shades either.

    • amywinns

I don’t think her dress should be belted at all…why put a belt on that print and silhouette, since that would make it flabby and blousy? Also, I don’t see it as unflattering — those legs tell me that the dress is loose, not that her body is in any kind of bad shape. And for all the criticisms that it’s too short or a “beach cover-up”, I see it as relatively modest, considering the high neckline and long sleeves. If it had a lower hemline, there would be jibes about it being a caftan or muumuu. It’s a cute not-too-casual summery look… just a little odd next to his burgundy pullover, but neither of them look bad.

    • janetjb

I like her glasses and bag together, but they need a cute top and pants.
The dress is okay, but I’d never wear it sight seeing at Niagara Falls.

    • StellaZafella

Let’s see, voluminous floral clown suit, non sequitor accessories, hair in a top knot = How to make a perfectly lovely woman look like Ziggy.

Wake me when men stop wearing their pants as is if they’ve just been caught taking a dump.

      • anotherEloise

Zippy, not Ziggy!  (But don’t worry, we know what you mean).

    • PeaceBang

    • Anathema_Device

That dress is awful on her.

& sunglasses. they dont match either.

i dont understand why someone who didnt have to [for whatever reason] would wear that dress. & i dont care a jot about mr wonderful, there, so it’s an actual unaffected [or -effected, for that matter] confusion. the shoes are okay.

Why would you wear an ugly little dress and platform shoes to Niagara Falls? I can just see her falling on her ass from wearing those stupid shoes on the Maid of the Mist.

BUT, if you’re going to try to be ridiculously glammed up for the situation, WHY would you choose those particular pieces?

    • AudreysMom

Wait? Is there someone in the picture with Ryan Gosling? Sorry. I was distracted.

    • mayavaly

If it was a bit longer, and didn’t have the print on it, it would look almost like a graduation robe. The perfect outfit for Gosling’s mum’s graduation. Very clever, girl, very clever.  It’s the ‘sympathy’ outfit, cos we all know that graduation gowns are some of the most hideous garments known to man.

    • kikisayshi

He looks great in that color.

She’s too slim to be wearing a moo moo.

      I WANT HIM now…

    • donkeygospel6

He’s so pretentious and humorless which undoes any appeal. This one’s for the hipsters.

    • lrhoff

      Is she pregnant?

    • jeeplibby02

Are they a couple? She looks twice his age.

    • Thathoodwink

I’m not being snarky but explain how her shoes and bag don’t go with the outfit. The shoes are a neutral; the bag seems to be a similar color to the dress. I think the dress is unflattering, yes, but everything seems to pull together. Enlighten me please!

    • JaneDC

I like the dress. And I’m sure she is delighted to be out of what is delicately referred to as “shape wear.”

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

She looks so nervous and like she is trying to be under the radar. Why not a pair of jeans, hoodie and sneakers with a baseball cap? I am totally being serious. People more famous than she get away with it all th time. On top fo the fact that she must have been freezing because it just hasn’t been that warm this week and it is always 10 degrees colder next to the falls.

    • bluefish

I feel bad about myself because I am so wanting him to be over her and move on.  Bad bad me.   She looks like Raquel Welch in these — and he looks like he needs me — desperately.

    • clairellis

They don’t even look like a couple to me. They don’t even walk near each other. But I do like the dress.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I was watching Eurovision 2012 videos this morning and the dancer for Finland’s entry was wearing this dress! It moves beautifully, but still looks like a muumuu.
