Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Emma Stone

Posted on June 04, 2012

Honestly, we think we can just show the following two pictures and call it a day:

Emma Stone attends the 2012 MTV Movie Awards in a Martin Grant dress paired with Brian Atwood shoes. Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Martin Grant Fall 2012 Collection

NOT YOUR DRESS.

But we figure y’all want to see more in order to form an opinion, so let’s break it down.

Brian Atwood ‘Grace’ Pumps

It’s a damn shame, because her hair and makeup look pretty, and the bodice is dramatic and flattering on her. It all goes south with that skirt, though. A long time ago, in a dress far, far away, we coined the term “hit the crotch,” to describe a look that’s going like gangbusters until your eye settles on some damning detail, as in “That pantsuit looks great until you hit the crotch.” Well, Ems, this dress is cute and dramatic, both on you and on the model, but it all hits the crotch on the bottom half.

The dress looks even worse on the model.

    • MK03

Ehh, I think the dress is fine. But…Girl, That Is Not Your Hair.

      • birkatbaby

        color

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I prefer her as a redhead but she’s a natural blonde. And I do love the top. And her lipstick. And her face.

          • Sara-Ann Collins

I highly doubt she is naturally this color of blonde. I doubt anyone is naturally this color of blonde.

            • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

My cousin’s hair was this color as a child (I believe it’s usually referred to as “corn silk”), but as an adult, I think you need some help to keep it this color.

            • la_lala

My natural hair color is about there. I refer to it as the absence of color. My natural hair color is a nonentity. Which is why I’m now a redhead!

    • judith traherne

Stunning bodice but they messed up the skirt. I like the shape of the skirt on the model but her peplum is shorter, not sure if it would work with this bodice.

It would make a fantastic floor-length (all black) dress but that would be too formal for this event.

But my god, that bodice is breathtaking.

      • Allison Woods

         Yup, love me that bodice.

    • crash1212

So close. I like it a bit better on the model because the skirt is more ‘exuberant’ – seems they’ve de-poofed it for Ems. Also, the skirt is the same color as Ems legs…and those shoes aren’t helping anything. Looks like she had her feet removed at the ankle. I must say, dark top/light bottom in a dress seems like a not very good idea to my eye. Hair and makeup are really pretty, though.

    • everest19

The best part is that it looks like she doesn’t even care that her skirt looks like a diaper.

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

The model’s skirt at least works better with the bodice than Emma’s tamer version.  Go big or go home!

      • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Totally. I surprised myself by thinking that Emma’s skirt needed more poof, but it does. The model is rocking it because it’s got that dramatic calla lily shape that Emma’s lacks.

      • H3ff

I imagine Emma was afraid of the volume and tucked it inside somewhat.

    • DaveUWSNYC

Looks like you have to be 8′ tall and 100# to pull that dress off. Even then.

    • SpcilK

I agree completely.  The bodice is very flattering on her and the hair and make – up Wow! Everything below the  waist is a Hot Mess.

    • janedonuts

That would be the wrong dress for anyone with white legs. Though maybe somebody with a nice tan could do it.

    • lordandtaylor

Oh me, oh my. How unfortunate this photo – and the award show – were beamed across the world. Get yourself some new gays, EM. That skirt looks like a very full adult diaper. TSK.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I agree with Clueless_Jock, the dress is a fail on the model as well.  That sort of skirt rarely works well, and the edited down version  Emma is wearing is even worse than the overly intellectual runway version.  Oh, and thank you, TLo, for sparing us a view of those shoes, from the side, in deployment.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Do the shoes have ruffley curtains on the back? How odd. Yeah – it’s not her dress. She looks fine, really, but we’ve seen her look so much better!

      • kimmeister

        Very weird shoes indeed.

    • http://twitter.com/Kikishua CMS

It looks like a weird upside down mushroom on the model

    • Sobaika

I refuse to acknowledge her as a blonde.

      • girliecue

Her and Jennifer Morrison. Mother Nature doesn’t always know best.

    • schadenfreudelicious

does she have a pair of ruffly bum panties on?.. cause that’s about the only thing that might make that diaper skirt work ;)

    • fringebenefit

Arghhhh. What possessed her to change the skirt?! It throws everything off. So sad, because otherwise she’s really hit every metric.

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

I love the dress on the model…not sure why they took all that yummy volume and draping away.  But that whole look is not her look. Agreed.  From the hair to the heel.  Love the bodice, love her, but no.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=558631967 Ivona Foster

Why the hell is she blonde again and what shade is that anyway, she looks like she rubbed ash into her hair the night before!

    • gdougs

I’m always shocked when I see her as a blonde and remember that’s actually her natural hair color. Just doesn’t seem right..

      • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

She’s actually blonde? Bizarre. She has the coloring of a ginger for sure. I guess she didn’t completely win the genetic lottery then, b/c that color hair does not work on her, natural or not.

        • gdougs

I think she looks beautiful either way, but red definitely suits her more

    • trisker

It’s too bad too because she looks ab-fab from the waist up — as pretty as I’ve ever seen her.

    • http://www.filmsbyneptune.com/ Dani Colman

It’d be gorgeous if the skirt were in a bright colour and flared out some, instead of that awkward dishwater quasi-bubble.  If she didn’t want to do the origami of the original skirt, I can kind of understand – though, to be fair, she’s never shied away from having details on her hips.  Still, I’m seeing it in a vivid pink.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

The bodice is nice enough, but it’s a bit brides-maid-y. It looks like a Waters & Waters dress from the late 90s. The skirt is awful and the shoes are ridiculous.

    • Pupioso

The skirt is “deflated” and looks terrible. It needed volume. Like the bodice though. The shoes weren’t my fav either.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

A rare moment of disagreement. I don’t love the dress but I dont’ hate it. And I don’t think it looks bad on Emma S. I do have a problem with her hair though. Too old. Especially for the MTV Video Awards. And for her twenties.

    • dschubba

I don’t get why they didn’t just adapt it into a pencil skirt instead of half-assing the volume and turning it into an over-starched pillowcase.

    • EEKstl

Why didn’t she just go for it with the full-blown skirt?  This half-assed thing she ended up with is just sad.

    • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

Agreed, if that dress had a pencil skirt, she’d be a WERQ

    • Sara__B

This dress is designed for posing, with the skirt puffed and fluffed and arranged just so and with the model bringing lots of energy and posture to the equation. Emma, as usual, just stands there. She’s cute and approachable, but no high fashion model. Definitely not her dress.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I actually disagree with Daddies T and Lo today. I think the dress looks adorable on her!

    • understateddiva

hiding her light under an actual lampshade.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

I don’t know, guys. I think she looks pretty good, especially compared to all the other crap on that RC.

    • Tracey Konicek

      1988 wants her bubble-skirt back!

    • Lina_bee

Love the bodice. She looks fab apart from the skirt.

    • msdamselfly

      I love the whole thing

    • clairellis

I feel like it wouldn’t look bad if it were all black. The white is bad.

    • iCouture

Sorry guys, COMPLETELY disagree with you!!!!

Emma looks adorable in the dress, AND its something different and not predictable.   Whats wrong with going a different route, and still look good?  You guys need to lighten up with the “rules”
      ;)

    • Judy_J

What’s with those shoes?  What is that thing attached to the heel?  A train?  Shall we call it a shoetrain?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/C5T2QPOAWOBDRHFL2MFAV7KQCY Tracy

It’s a cape.  The black strap makes it look like the pump is wearing a little shoe-cape.  It’s a little nude superhero in a black cape.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martha-Hicks-Leta/1059884884 Martha Hicks Leta

You said it. It’s all so good, but that skirt looks like a deflated bathing cap. A different color would have helped it enormously.

    • Rand Ortega

Frankendress. Bodice is way too dramatic for a short skirt. It’s wrong for the event, too. Love the hair & makeup, though she looks a bit like Elizabeth Banks as a blond, which is extremely jarring.

    • Vanessak69

Really? I think the dress is cute but I wish she’d go back to what (I am guessing) was her original red hair. Don’t Lohan yourself.

      • iCouture

She is not a natural redhead, she has talked about it before.

      • AthenaJ

Apparently she’s naturally blond, but I agree she looks much less generic and washed out (and older?) as a redhead.

    • LuisaNL

      textbook scrolldown fug.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I’m totoally off topic here, but how have I never noticed how much she resembles Jeri Ryan?!?

    • charlotte

She looks like her dress is made of origami. And someone please explain to me why she had to go blonde to play an originally red-headed character? It’s just not working on any level.

      • turtleemily

I’m under the impression she’s playing Gwen Stacy in Spider-man, who is indeed blonde.

        • charlotte

           My bad then.

    • MilaXX

I wish she would have just worn pants and called it a day

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

      Unfortunate.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I’m ashamed to say I watched last night, as a Harry Potter geek rooting for the last possible awards for the last HP movie, and I will say that this didn’t look so bad while she moved. Those puffy skirts are always awkward, but when she was moving around it didn’t look nearly as bad as these pictures would have you think.

    • cleep1000

A pair of sleek evening pants would have rocked this out. As is, dreadful.

    • http://twitter.com/ThisIsNotEmber John Watson

i actually really like it, thought she looked absolutely lovely at the awards last night.  But i tend to think the things emma wears are cute when it seems the internet as a whole doesnt necessarily agree so, i get used to it.

    • Nonnah

      Scroll down fug

    • pookiesmom

Huh. I think she looks really good.

    • Sophie Collier

That’s not even the same skirt from dress to dress.  One is very voluminous (and not just because the model is super skinny) and the other one is basically a diaper for monopods.  Great bodice, though!  And cute-ish shoes.

    • NurseEllen

The shots of her where only the black bodice is showing are just gorgeous.  I keep imagining it with a sleek black sheath extending downward, and not that fugly white thing.  So I guess HALF of it is her dress, and the other half isn’t.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

That dress should be on Nicole Kidman or Charlize Theron, not Emma. Emma’s popular kind of like a blond/redhead Mila Kunis, because they’re the “geeky” girls who happen to be hot.

    • quiltrx

I like the bodice.  We won’t talk about the rest.  And go back to the red hair, darling.

    • guest2visits

Saw the show; she was really stunning in this… even though it’s hacked a little too short like nearly every other teen queen
      or celeb there.

    • frankystein123

Yikes, that dress looks like a giant diaper.

    • Dagney

Right now there is a cabbage patch doll saying, “Bitch ripped off my threads!”

    • ccm800

LOVE it on the model. WHY they took it in so it had like two belly button things is beyond me. The bodice is fitted very well and her hair and face look lovely

    • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Ced

i think it looks fine, i think she looks great with her hair and make up and bodice yes, the skirt really doesnt kill it that much for me

    • kingderella

disagree. the model looks better, so much so that she appears to be wearing a completely different look. but it looks cute on stone as well, in its own way. not loving the haircolour, tho.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I want to talk about her hair. Normally I’m not in favor of redheads going blonde (hello Nicole Kidman), but she looks pretty hot. Unfortunately it also makes her look kind of generic.
As long as she doesn’t go lighter and lighter with each passing day, I think she should have a short blonde phase. Maybe a brunette one after.

    • Srw27

Those shoes are divine but that skirt is ridiculous

    • oohsparkley!

I actually like it, except for the shoes.
