Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Dianna Agron

Posted on June 14, 2012

It can often be quite cute when prom-queen-goes-goth or prom-queen-goes-rocker-chick or even just plain old prom-queen-says-fuck-it…

Dianna Agron attends the Persol Magnificent Obsessions: 30 Stories of Craftmanship in Film Event in NYC.

Opening Ceremony Floral Jacquard Babydoll Dress

Opening Ceremony Raffia Pocket Cardigan

Rag & Bone Emery Wedge Boots

… but it’s rarely a good idea to attempt all three at once. Sweetie, we totally believe you can pull off something quirky, dark, and off the beaten path if you want to, but nothing here is doing you any favors when it’s all thrown together like this. Too much. This is how hoarding starts, dear.

Cute boots, though.

Why the vest???? WHYYY? It could have been cute and gothy, but now she is just serving Satanic Librarian.

      • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

I think that’s just the sleeveless dress showing through the sheer cardigan. Still horrific, though.

        • MarissaLG

Ohh, I see it now. STILL.

      • colleenjanel

It’s not a vest. It’s a cropped cardigan over a sleeveless dropped waist dress.

        • formerlyAnon

“cropped cardigan over a sleeveless dropped waist dress”

You don’t even have to SEE it to guess the proportions will be unflattering.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3DWDLRZCK3MZICZKYJDR55MC4Y soren

It took me a while to figure it out, but it’s actually a slightly see-through cardigan buttoned up tight over a sleeveless dress, which looks like a vest because you can see the arm holes on the dress through the cardigan.  I think if she ditched the cardigan, or if it were in a different colour she would look great, but yeah.

        • colleenjanel

I think it would still look bad in another color … She’s created two distinct lines. The hem of the cropped cardi and the dropped waist of the dress. It obliterates any proportions that may exist.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3DWDLRZCK3MZICZKYJDR55MC4Y soren

Maybe if it were unbuttoned?  I agree that it would look much better without, but I don’t know, maybe it’s cold in there.

            • terekirkland

I don’t think the proportions of the pieces work together, different colors or no. The cardi is giving her two waist lines and two necklines. I’d wear a long white cardi and metallic flats with this dress to the office. For a red carpet in this dress, I suppose I’d go with some oxfords (with some interesting texture or pattern or color or something) and a white tuxedo jacket. A little menswear would balance out the twee. Love those boots, just not with this dress.

            • colleenjanel

Unbuttoning wouldn’t help. If she absolutely needed a cardigan, it needed to be in another color, and either the cardi should be longer or the waist of the dress higher.

            • Aurumgirl

Maybe if it were burned?  More Ruth Buzzi wear.

      • anotherEloise

        Satanic librarian!  Sounds like fun.

    • Kristalbailey

This looks like something Season 1 Tina would wear. Not a good look on her!

    • ChiliP

Well, her makeup looks lovely. Her hair….does not.

      • introspective

my thoughts exactly. fresh face, haggard hair, flammable outfit. (save for the boots, which I would fight her for). overall in big old mess.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Without that ridic sweater, it would ahve been great.  The Goth Cardi stuck a knife in this look.

    • understateddiva

I can’t say I hate it.  If it’s goth, it’s a very polished version of such.

    • http://twitter.com/XTREMELYSERIOUS Justine

Love the dress, hate the sweater, lose the tights, different shoes.  Basically how the dress was originally styled would have been cute!

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

I think she would have looked perfect without the sweater thing. The whole thing isn’t necessarily the worst thing ever. It’s certainly not the best though either.

    • Little_Olive

Oh TLo, methinks you’ll have to create a “girl, that’s not your season” section.

I mean, WTH honey. Did you miss your laser hair removal appointment or something?

      • JackieOBlue

Yes, this.  Last two posts are people wearing fall clothing in places where the temperatures are definately not.  Tights, boots and a cardigan in NYC in mid-June looks a bit ridiculous.

      • calimon

i absolutely agree with the season point, but you would never catch me in that dreadful ensemble, even in the dead of winter!

    • another_laura

      Oh no, dear, no.  nonononono.

    • lordandtaylor

Oh, such a nice summery frock. (lol) Throw is some vampire fangs and she is ready for a staring role in “Dark Shadows.”

    • Zippypie

She looks like she stole some random items from the Olson twins.  Poor girl.

    • colleenjanel

Oops. I see this was pointed out while I was posting (darn slow typing on the iPad!)

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

I know it’s not cold in NYC right now. I can’t imagine how icky it would feel to wear a pair of black tights and a sweater.

    • dickylarue

Cousin Marylyn from the Munsters raided Wednesday Adams’s closet! Talk about mashups Mr. Schue!

    • EEKstl

Lose the sweater and the tights and she might have been on to something here.

    • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

Pantyhose in June? This must be what hell feels like! Btw I like all the elements of her outfit just not put together.

    • AlexisPayne

Just the boots and dress might have been cute. The tights and the cardigan (or is it a top?) are a bridge too far. It’s June!

    • Klocked

Putting aside the issue of the hair for a moment – this would’ve been super cute without the cardigan and probably close to perfect without the tights.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This could have been salvaged if she’d gone without the cardigan. Maybe. But still… this is mid-June in NYC. Why the heavy dress, opaque tights and heavy shoes??

    • http://twitter.com/MisterFiq Rafiq Mohamad

Only a red carpet performance artist can pull off such a batshit cray cray outfit… Miss Chloe Sevigny or whoever the fuck you choose to be from your colorful MPD bag. Kindly show Miss Dianna Argon, how it’s done.

    • Qitkat

Now if she had worn the sweater under the dress, she would have had the long sleeves without adding the second waistline.
Still an odd look for most places in mid June.
I think her look says *art school student*. With money.
      Cute boots.

    • MilaXX

Okay I’ve been willing to look the other way at all these Fall clothes on the RC when I am sitting under the AC trying to breath but this is ridiculous.  She looks homeless. If she had worn that black sleeveless dress with a cute wedge she would have been okay. She does not need in June to be wearing a dress, a long sleeved sweater, tights and boots.

      Just stop it.

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

You guys should start or relabel some of these posts as, “When Pretty People Wear Ugly things”.

      • JackieOBlue

What about the designers that create said ugly things?

    • TheOriginalLulu

She looks ready for Autumn. Love the shoes, but boots in June?

It reminds me of when I was living in Brazil and boots became all the rage for some reason, even though we were in a tropical climate where the temps rarely dipped below 75 degrees. We were all running around in big effing boots with our little skirts and shorts, our feet unbearably hot and sweaty, but we were on trend! That’s all that mattered!!

    • Le_Sigh

The dress + the boots would have been cute/dark enough.  She could have at least unbuttoned the cardi.

    • Annabelle Archer

She is so Amish. Like, always.

    • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

You know I participated in a study that aimed to prove that at certain point in a woman’s cycle, she tends to want to cover up more/dress more conservatively, I am guessing Diana is right in the middle of that point in her cycle. STUDY PROVEN.

      • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

She ALWAYS dresses really covered-up, though.

    • kimmeister

I have no issue with any of the individual elements, but all thrown together, they look horrible.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IT IS JUNE.  JUNE!  PUT AWAY THE NUN STOCKINGS AND SENSIBLE SHOES!

    • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Somebody needs to tell poor Dianna that it’s June!

    • Wendy Kaufman

Black, black…the great excuse color. OFGS. Who cares how many layers she’s wearing, you need a miners helmet with lamp to actually see any of it anyway.

    • Scarlet39

Very strange outfit to wear in June

    • formerlyAnon

Waaaaaay less than the sum of its parts.

Also: it’s June. I know air conditioning can be frigid, but why a cardigan and boots now when the starlets were sleeveless and showing their toes in February?

    • Sara__B

Such a wintry, bleak outfit. Even her lovely smile can’t summer it up. Is it unseasonably cold in NYC?

    • Susan Crawford

She must have been absolutely SWELTERING in that outfit unless the venue was air conditioned to Arctic levels. It has been humid and muggy in NYC for days and days and days.

The picture of the cardi with te leather skirt made me drool a little, and the boots are meant to live in my closet, thank you so much. But all togeter with the black dress and the tights? In June? Darling, no. Make yourself comfortable and cool – please!

    • Judih1

Looks drab and inappropriate for the spring/summer season

    • the_valkyrie

I NEED THOSE BOOTS!!!! Trying to justify their 500 euro price tag though…

    • judybrowni

So, if you’re going to a hipster funeral next winter…

Guess the designers are handing out free stuff from their fall catalogue, and Diane is layering it on like Heidi.

    • SapphoPoet

I think that is her dress, but not her shirt, tights, or shoes. It’s just all too heavy; also, she looks like its mid-November, not June.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

Isn’t it summer in NYC? Why the tights???

    • Cathy S

Why did she wear that cardigan? The dress was cute and she ruined it!

    • HeatherMcIlrath

that is the ugliest sweater i have ever seen in my life.

    • Snarky_Amber

I want to run up to her, rip off the cardi, tell her to run to the bathroom to strip off the tights and then give her one pop of color -shit, eve a bright lip, but preferably a necklace or cuff. I’m betting that dress is super cute on her without the sweater, and the boots are to die, but the tights and cardigan turn it all into Ally-Sheedy-in-The-Breakfast-Club realness, and not in a good way.

    • Alexis Keller

Just the dress and the boots with out that cardigan or those tights and it would have been perfect

    • jennifervney

Gah!! She ruined that super cute dress with that cardi and those boots!!! Where are the fashion police when you need them, because this is a crime!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

Isn’t it summer? Why is she wearing something that would look great in October?

    • Brendan Schulze

That dress robs her of any semblance of shape, so I’m just going to have to say ‘no’ to it. As someone who’s still trying to learn fashion, I’d keep the shoes, lose the dress, and pair that cute cardigan with a pair of black pants and maybe a white blouse. The ring on her left hand was a nice thought, but it just as to the gray dreariness of this outfit. Maybe a silver or white gold bracelet, to compliment that ring on the right? Nothing heavy or clunky, but I can’t help but think a simple chain-style one would work.

    • BrooklynBomber

What is with the ladystars today? They’re all throwing on the kind of schmattas I’ve put on myself through the years, only to look back and say, “what was I thinking? or “geez, I was desperate to get dressed that day, wasn’t I?”

    • Candigirl1968

It’s clear based upon her fashion choices that Diana prefers to be covered up.  She clearly is working with someone who equates “covered up” with “let’s bundle you up like you’re in a cabin in the woods in January and not in 80 degree mid-June NYC heat.”  It’s a shame, because the dress is cute (if perhaps a bit too cutesy for her).

    • Laylalola

It’s like she thinks she’s having a fat day so covered every inch up but went with slimming black or something.

    • BrightsideSusan

Is it not mid-June where she is?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=720742723 Sarah Winningham

I choose to believe that she is cosplaying as Phoebe from Friends.

    • Tamara Hogan

If those aren’t her boots, can I have them? Please? ;-)

    • Kriky

The dress by itself is so cute. Why the cardigan? Why the tights, the boots? I’m just at a loss here! Her makeup’s good, but I just wore my hair like that to the gym.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

      How very “back to school”.
Only it’s June, and Dianna is not a schoolkid.

    • marilyn

This is Amish girl wears a short skirt, but is not going to be kicked out of the group because her legs and arms are totally covered up.  This looks like a back-of-the-closet ensemble put together because the laundry basket is totally full, and contains most items from the closet.  Do your laundry and wear your OTHER clothes.

    • marilyn

    • guest2visits

She looks good in her all black collection; but I know I would have picked different boots. Whatever.

    • TieDye64

The cardi looks ridiculous with this.

    • sashaychante

Don’t like the cardigan with the dress.  Is it COLD OUT somewhere?  She looks like she is freezing.

    • PeaceBang

But what’s really freaking me out here is the scary Mrs. Bates hair on the model. I love the model’s outfit and the boots. I can lose the dress and the tights are truly terrible. All of it piled on Miss Agron is not a good look.

      • Ksagun13

Is that Bates Motel Mrs. Bates?  Or Downton Abbey Mrs. Bates?  Either way, I agree, the model’s hair is frightening.

    • quiltrx

The dress and maybe the boots…ditch the tights and sweater.

    • granddelusion

I can’t even tell what the hell shes wearing. Kinda digging the boots, tho.

    • Ksagun13

Like the dress, hate the sweater, hate the boots.  Well, just hating the combination.  Diana’s hair is cute, though.  And I totally agree about the Mrs. Bates hair on the model.

    • kikisayshi

Why the hell is she wearing that sweater (which I love on the model)? This might actually be her dress if she wore just the dress.

    • bitterk

That dress should belong to no one.  Hiddy.

    • Kristy Evans

It’s SUMMER. You do not need a cardigan, tights, and boots. Nooooo

    • donkeygospel6

She stole that from Charlize Theron’s wardrobe for Snow White and the Huntsman.
