Gant Rugger Summer 2012 Collection

Posted on June 06, 2012

Darlings, let’s all look at a cute preppy boymodel in cute, preppy boyclothes. It’s Gant Rugger’s first summer collection and the looks are pure Hamptons tennis club. It’s polos and madras, oxfords and v-neck sweaters, all the way down the line. Like something a young, hot Thurston Howell III would wear. We dig it. We especially dig the blazers, which look fantastic paired with jeans and tennis shoes. And as devoted Bitter Kittens know, we’re suckers for a fabulous plaid.

Interesting. Not much sex appeal though.

    • formerlyAnon

I find full-body prep & sex appeal mutually exclusive.

(At least in photos. There are, of course, memorable exceptions in life . . .*sighs wistfully.*)

      • I picture Kurt (Chris Colfer) on Glee dressing in

    • I like a little prep though, like a preppy jacket over jeans, or a Doctor Who-esque bow tie (they’re cool). But a precious looking boy wearing prep is definitely over the top.

      • fursa_saida

Bow ties are cool. Fezzes are cool.

  • Judy_J

    Chatsworth Osborne, Jr.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

oh man that one with the cream blazer. sucker for a cute preppy boy. yes. (and also totally ador the plaid shirt in the 2nd photo). but he should stop smirking…

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

This is how I picture Kurt (Chris Colfer) on Glee dressing in college.

    • Annie Leung

I can see Blaine or just Darren Criss walking around in these too.

      • 3boysful

From the thumbnail, that’s who I thought it was!

    • nomoreprinces

I was just thinking that these needed to appear on Glee either this guy on the show or Darren Criss wearing this.

    • Exactly! Hi, Klaine-bot. 😀

  • Preppy has never been my thing.  Some of the pieces are good.  I particularly like the Plum colored blazer, and the gray shorts.  But most of this, honestly, leaves me pretty cold.

    •  I agree, but even if it is one’s thing, it looks like a J Crew catalog from 1987. How is this original?

  • All men should use these pictures as guides when shopping for new clothes. Imagine how much better our streets would look?!?! They should consider purchasing these clothes as a public service to us ALL.

    • formerlyAnon

Well, I may be biased since I’m not a fan of prep, but those jackets cut away so that the front edges do not meet, beginning at or a little above the belt, are going to look like hell on anyone but the perfectly flat-bellied.

      • oohsparkley!

I think the jackets look a little undersized/too short/too small.  This could be a new trend in mens wear.

    • snarkykitten

idk like a sea of WASPs. No thank you.

  • MaryMG

The smirk on that kid’s face in the maroon jacket makes me want to slap him.

    • Sara LaBatt

I was thinking the same!  Nice clothes but that smirk.  Also he almost looks stretched out in the legs, like they made them longer with Photoshop or something.  His upper body seems proportional but his legs seem out of proportion somehow.

    • HengRu

I can just hear one of my old nuns from grammar school looking at him and saying, “Get that smirk off your face or I’ll WIPE it off, young man!”

    • DeborahJozayt

It’s what Kristen Stewart would permanently look like if she were a man.

  • stephkat

I can totally see a young Mitt Romney in these.

    • Me too! Perhaps that’s why they make my skin crawl.

  • Lina_bee

It’s very Gatsby, in that timeless way of 1930s men’s fashion.

    • You know, I rather like Gatsby style, but this didn’t read that way to me for some reason. Too much douche, not enough class in them.

      • Lina_bee

Oh, yes, I agree with you on the douche-factor, but that’s also true of men’s fashions from the 1930s. I mean, the whole *wealthy Hamptons aristocrat* genre is guilty of it. But I think there are some nice pieces here, especially if used in moderation.

  • SpcilK

    Love it!

  • Yes, I would definitely wear a shirt, tie, sweater, blazer, shorts and GLOVES in the DC summer humidity.  Just imagine how comfortable that would be!  😐

  • MilaXX

I don’t usually care for preppy guys but I like everything here.

  • AlexisPayne

Love, if I was a man, this is how I would dress.

  • I seem to be the minority here, but I LOVE this collection. But then again, preppy is my type. The maroon jacket/white chinos outfit practically screams Darren Criss.

  • I want ALL of those blazers immediately.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Cute collection. I’m sure my manly-man would deem some of these looks ultra-nerdy, but on the right guy they would be awesome.
Love the blazer+jeans look too; in fact it’s what I’m wearing today, with a nice pair of heels. Yay for casual offices!

  • kimmeister

Is it me, or do half of the blazers not fit the model appropriately in the shoulder?

    •  Yes, and they’re on the short side, too, especially the two blazers worn with jeans.

    • These are unconstructed blazers. They are made without padding in the shoulder to keep the look casual and modern.

  • Sara__B

Is this the male equivalent of twee? I like it anyway, and the individual pieces are mostly classics that look good on almost all guys, IF you can get them to dress up a bit.

  • jw_ny

I do appreciate a good preppy look as well have a love for plaids.  The opportunity to wear shorts with a sport coat, tie, sweater, etc are non existent at my age though…if only I were a rich frat boy.  sigh.  😉    I could still see myself wearing pieces parts though.  🙂 Shoes without socks…I’d never.  Anywho…the sport coats all appear a bit short and tight across this twinks chest…pulls funny from chest to button.

  • janetjb

I love it, but I’ve always loved preppy.
    (Wolf in sheep’s clothing? Maybe)

I’m intrigued by the tennis player’s socks.  I never see anyone wearing socks with stripes anymore.

    • Deb

My 17 yr old was begging for striped tube socks last year…. (ed. for spelling…)

  • PeggyOC

Cute, but I can’t help getting the feeling that every one of these guys is the mean preppy kid from a movie from the 80s.  You look at them and think “You’ll get your comuppance, snotty boy.”

    • HengRu

They’re all the same guy, just in different outfits.

  • Why are all of the blazers way too small on the model. Is this a new things?

Oh and skinny calves on men are such a turn off.

    • Not just the skinny calves, but boy is he bow legged!  You would drive a herd of horses through those legs.

Love these!  Wish I could get my DH on board with a look like these.  Too flashy (ie, too much color/pattern) for his taste.  But a girl can dream!

  • Sarah Thomas

I’m sorry, that guy looks like a summer camp date rapist.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Great Gatsby meets Preppy 1984.  Hmmm.

  • everest19

That second outfit is pure FRAT. The white tennis shoes look a little orthopedic.

  • BradWatson

I know summer collections aren’t the place to look for serious statements, but I find this look done-to-death and irrelevant (at best).  And more than a bit infantizing – I keep thinking of the snooty, clueless rich kid bounding into the scene with a tennis racket, and ending up with a black-eye and a wedgie.

  • Libby Rhoman

I can’t wait to see Nolan Ross wearing this collection.

  • That smirk makes me want to smack him.

  • EW smug.

  • joolyz

those red shorts on tanned legs. yes.

  • RebeccaKW

This is certainly not summer in the south clothing.  The shorts, maybe, but nothing else.  Sweaters?  That’s January-wear around here.

I do love the looks with jeans paired with the jackets.

  • hellkell

I shouldn’t want to smack the smirk off this guy’s face, right? It’s distracting.

  • lordandtaylor

My b-day is Saturday. I would like one of each please. Oh, and a place in the Hamptons, too.

Are the jackets supposed to look one size too small….and short?

  • JCrew Luxe.

  • donkeygospel6

I’d take him for a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

  • JMansm

I want it all, including the model.

  • Terence Ng

Oh look, Blaine could wear any of these in the next season of Glee.

  • formerlyAnon

Prep is sooo not my thing so I’m biased, but if you like preppy clothes, these aren’t bad. Though all but the perfectly flat bellied are going to look awful in most of those jackets, if they really are supposed to fit like that.

All that said, I do really like the first jacket, with the navy lapels & window pane pattern. Though I’d put it on a grown man wearing what used to be referred to in British novels as “flannel bags” (in navy), and insist he wear real honest to god shoes, not sneakers or boat shoes. Edited to add: and SOCKS, for god’s sake.

  • MzzPants

  • Dhammadina

    Cute. But skinny pony legs.

  • They’re Darren Criss clothes. I adore them for the young, rich and thin. On anyone else, they’d be ridiculous.

  • anotherEloise

Thurston Howell III.  Still laughing here.

  • Kolo_Ol

They couldn’t pick a less bowlegged model?

  • turtleemily

Nolan Ross would rock all of these.

  • guest2visits

Whoever’s doing the modeling for this line is doing it perfectly. He makes it all look pretty damn good.
I really like his jacket over jeans pics.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

God, who knows boys who actually dress like this?

    •  We do.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

That must be a fabulous sight to behold. As a lifelong West Coast-er, I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a thing up close.

    • formerlyAnon

In these parts, it’s (mostly former) frat boys and, much more so, wannabe frat boys (who are of former fratboy age) who like the style, or the imagined image or something.

Most actual frat boys don’t seem to spend this much money on their casual clothes – it’s not till they’re a few years out into the world that they can. Plus it’s really, really hot & humid here for about 6 months out of the 12, so this much layering is rarely seen outside of Dec.-Feb.

  • Where oh where is that red raincoat?! Want, but cannot find.

  • Can’t wait to see Nolan wear this entire collection at once on Revenge next season.

  • …And having not read the second page of comments I see I am the fourth person to make this joke.

  • snarkykitten

He looks like a smarmy douche…but a smarmy douche who is enjoying the attention & clothes. More than I can say about most male model shoots!

  • Chuck Bass-y. I love the sweater in the tennis shot.  Trying to imagine these on a more mature, less-boyish man, and I think a lot of it would look great.

  • fanneydg

this is cute. i also like that it’s called a summer collection, not the usual “resort wear” collection.

  • sleepycat

drooling here. I have a thing for WASP, despite being being a sloppy dresser.

  • donkeygospel6

I’m not even gonna lie. I would hit that SO HARD.

  • I long for the day I could drop money on exotically colored blazers without needing a place to wear them to.

  • Puckndc

Cute, but I wish someone would stop the ” I’m wearing my little brothers jacket which is too sizes too small” look

  • TomBord

preh-shush. a little tooooo much so…………. very jcrew/////////// for girls.

  • ccm800

the shorts are pretty cute as well

  • I can’t get past the smug boy face. Makes it all too unappealing.

  • i agree with TLo…love the blazers with jeans.
liking each piece, alone.  don’t need the head to toe country club set.

  • Aurumgirl

That photo of our preppy model wearing gloves and shorts made me think of American Psycho for a second.

  • I would wear any of these…except the red shorts (I’m a red-head, let us not be ridiculous here). Love the line. And the Thurston Howell reference.

  • CatherineRhodes

Straight out of the preppie handbook. Yawn.

  • fursa_saida

    Paging Nolan Ross.
