Freida Pinto for Flaunt Magazine

Posted on June 13, 2012

Freida looks like she just walked off the set of an early ’70s Blaxploitation movie – and that’s pretty freaking awesome.

Flaunt Magazine July 2012 Issue
Editorial: “The Elegant Resistance”
Photographer: Yu Tsai
Stylist: Elizabeth Stewart
Hair: Giannandrea
Makeup: Jillian Dempsey

Unfortunately, we don’t think any of the subsequent pictures fulfilled the promise of that first shot. Don’t get us wrong; she looks good. It’s just that the editorial opened really strong, with an image of her that really made you look, and then it just sort of turned into a standard actress editorial with a slightly Dorothy Dandridge feel to it after that. Still, that one shot is pretty amazing. And no matter the styling or setting, the girl sure can work a lens.

She’s so fierce-adjacent, but then that sweet smile peeks through…. I’d love to see her go full-on ferocious someday.

    • Little_Olive

Hmm. It’s OK styling (what? no editorial seems to impress me anymore :s)

      Not for her face IMO.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh hey Freida, you look a bit like Amy Winehouse in that first shot.  But absolutely stunning in the rest of them.

    • EditKitten

      I just don’t get her.

    • RebeccaKW

70’s Blaxploitation would be a fabulous editorial!  Awkward ‘kung-fu’ moves, a scene in a Holiday Inn lounge.  I want this!

She does look good, but nothing earth shattering.

    • Jessi03

Dorothy Dandridge meets Sophia Loren.  She gives great face!

      • Cassie

I was thinking Sophia Loren, too. Stunning.

        • Penny Eager

Yeah she has amazing cheek bones!

        • Penny Eager

Yeah she has amazing cheek bones!

    • kimmeister

Her legs look 3 miles long in that first shot.

    • MilaXX

That first picture is serving it up Pam Grier style. LOVE it. I also love the face shoot. The rest are okay, but those two are head turners.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

That lipliner on the photo third from the bottom looks like she’s Prince’s little sister or something.  Why do they do that?

    • Sobaika

I don’t think it’s featured on TLo’s page, but the cover shot for this issue is pure sex. Same with the opening shot of the editorial. The rest don’t live up, but she makes it happen when she wants to.

    • Judy_J

Love the photo with the crop top and dungarees.

    • Jaeda Laurez

I didn’t think Dorothy Dandridge so much as Rita Moreno. I love it still the same.

Steeeck to you own kind, one of your own kind……… :)

        • Call me Bee

Sarcastically sings, “verrry smarrt, Mareea, verrry smarrt!”

    • Carla Axtman

The first B&W frame in this serious is superb. It jumps right off of my screen. Great work by both the subject and the photographer.

    • Nicholas

At least she’s not sitting in a car.

    • SublimatedRage

I think she looks great, but that wig is totally the one Jan Brady wore when she went to the birthday party and didn’t want to be blonde anymore!

I actually would like to love your comment.  One of the best episodes ever.

    • nannypoo

I don’t get the point of this. She looks better as herself.

    • SpcilK

She is giving Carmen Jones. Werk Frida, Werk!

    • donkeygospel6

I think I speak for all my people when I say she makes us look great.

    • Warrior89

      She is beautiful.  That’s all.

    • guest2visits

This is a beautiful editorial. She shines and so do the outfits.

    • Mirakel9

Hate the first picture….what is that funky head of hair and those shorts are atrocious!! The rest are okay, except agree…the dark lipliner is done….

    • PaulaBerman

That first picture has an insane crotch, and it was too distracting for me to appreciate the Pam Grier realness she was trying to serve up.

    • SpillinTea

She was giving me all KINDS of life with that “Get Christie Love” realness in the first photo. I love it!

    • Lilak

She has the looks for this and the ed was a great idea – though I gotta say, better as a notion than in the execution.

One thing it brought to mind: How tiny almost all of our actresses are these days, esp. compared to the decades suggested in ‘period’ editorials.

    • RzYoung

Cool, she looks so different, she should definitely try short hair.

    • golspie

I like this. This is the look that Amy Winehouse was going for but never quite got to (by ‘quite’, i mean ‘not in a thousand years’).

    • Call me Bee

Love the halter with the rolled-up jeans.  Actually the whole shoot has a good Foxy Brown vibe.

    • ballerinawithagun

What is up with the distracting, visible lip liner???

    • skadi1

I think she looks great. Tremendously great.

    • GTrain

I love it. She looks great.

    • ccm800

In the minority I know –  but she leave me flat. Always.

    • gelcat

ok….  why am I flashing on John Leguizamo in “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar” as ‘ChiChi Rodriguez’??

    • bitterk

Except for the weird crotch in the opening shot, these are smoking hot.  The woman is absolutely stunning.

    • msdamselfly

Will she be playing Amy Winehouse in a biopic ?
