Florence Welch for Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on June 01, 2012

Flo does her hippy-dippy, flowers-in-her-hair schtick for Harper’s UK.

Florence Welch is featured in the July 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK magazine photographed by Camilla Akrans and styled by Sissy Vian.

We’re so … bleh on the whole hippy chick thing. It’s not that we don’t like the look on some ladies, but we’re just kind of over it with Flo – especially since she often works hippy-chick styling while wearing hundred-thousand-dollar couture gowns and that always struck us as a little pretentious.

Still, the pictures are pretty, and surprisingly sensual. That’s the best makeup we’ve ever seen on her.

    Yawning hugely,….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=39301090 Alyssa Caruso Ivins

       so sick of her.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Blech, just … blech.  Why doesn’t she at least keep the dress on?  This whole half-pulling-it-off thing is irritating.

    • Isadora Paiva

Oh come on! We see tons of pictures in guytorials with the whole “clothes half on” thing, and all us girls seem to enjoy it. What’s wrong with a girl doing the same?

Well, I personally think she looks sexy and beautiful here, even if I do agree with TLo on the subject of the hippycouture shtick being kind of pretentious, not to mention repetitive.

    • Sophie Collier

Because the fashion shoot director or whatever told her to let it fall off?

She should hire the hair and make up, for sure.  Someone has figured out how to soften her face, at least we hope it’s the make up and not photo shop.

Doesn’t she look a bit like Blake Lively even? Definitely the first time she doesn’t look 10 years older than she actually is.

      • http://twitter.com/pennyeager Penny Eager

Ooh I just wikipediaed her, I CAN’T believe she’s only 25! She always looks SO MUCH older in photos! I think part of it is that she just looks so weary and over it in most photographs…

  • Sobaika

Flo, hire that makeup team. You actually look your age.

  • Sara__B

She isn’t assuming her usual Camille (beautifully consumptive and tragic) facial expression, and she looks much closer to her usual age, but I’m yawning hugely along with Kiltdntiltd.

  • MilaXX

I actually like the makeup and hair better than the clothes.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

She kinda looks like Vanessa Redgrave. (circa Camelot)

    • Judy_S

I was thinking that, too. Or Morgan, though the colors and flowers in her hair are definitely more Lovely Month of May. I find her (both of them) stunning but she wasn’t/isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

    • Judy_J

That’s what I thought!  Should have read your comment before I made mine.

  • Anathema_Device

She looks beautiful, but you’re right in that she has done this look to death. It is cool that she has her personal style and it works for her, but it would be fun to see a magazine shake up her image even a tiny bit. Wasn’t there a cover where she looked more rocker? I seem to remember that. She looked pretty incredible if I remember correctly.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

lots & lots & lots & lots of photoshop. does all sorts of things besides reduce people to their skeletons, as demonstrated herein.

  • In_Stitches

She looks really pretty here, it’s nice to really see her face.

  • Kolo_Ol

the only picture I like of her is that closeup

  • TheOriginalLulu

I was going to say about the makeup. That closeup of her face…is beautiful.

  • ballerinawithagun

Flo needs the soft look. Her body looks fabulous, but I agree that whoops off my shoulder look is overdone.

  • Spreecord

She has such a strong, architectural look about her, between the height and her facial features. I’d love to see a shoot that played with that side of her appearance.

  • poggi

Flower crowns are best left to rennaissance fairs and 4 year olds, better yet to only 4 year olds at a ren fest.

    • suzq

Crap.  I now have to burn my wedding pictures.  Dammit.

      • poggi

Put away the lighter fluid. You have identified another subject and another appropriate venue for flower crowns. I will add bridal parties and weddings to my short list.

  • Judy_J

In these photos, she reminds me of a young Vanessa Redgrave.

  • sweetlilvoice

Reminds me a lot of the photos in her new CD which I don’t like as much as the first. I wonder if that styling was intentional…to tie back to the album?

  • cleep1000

    Of course.

  • joe_tey83

    Why is she stripping?

  • RebeccaKW

Whoever did Flo’s hair and make-up should be hired by Flo full time.  That 2nd pic, the closeup of her face…TO DIE.

I think she’s a wonderful muse for this sort of thing. It’s not hippy-dippy so much as it is Arthurian, yes? A modern Gwynevere. I also love her when she’s channeling the whole Erte, art decco vibe and, as others pointed out here, she can easily tap in to the 1960s Vannesa Redgrave quite effectively. I think this inspires yawns from people because she’s so potentially interesting, but no one’s yet really had the balls to take that exploration to the stratosphere.

    • suzq

In this shoot, she channels Erte.  She usually dresses like she stepped out of a 1978 American Bicentennial celebration.

  • NatalieD28

The close-up photo is KILLING me! She looks divine in it!

  • j_anson

    Yup, that’s… her thing.

  • erinbinek

    She bugs.

  • Lina_bee

Oooh, awesome makeup! Downsides: I continue to prefer her without bangs. That filmy sheer thing looks like an artfully pinned DRAPERY panel, which, sexass, yes, but still: not a dress. The rings cheapen the look.

  • sk8tfan

She looks like Vanessa Redgrave as Guinevere is about to marry King Arthur in Camelot. Looked cool in the 60’s…now, not new or unique. Flo, your voice is stunning, your style should match it.

  • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

Wow. She looks…sexy. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look sexy in such a sensual way before.

I am a little sick of her whole schtick, but then I go and listen to “Seven Devils” or “Shake It Out” again, and holy shit. She’s kinda earned the pretensions.

  • sharonimus

Hair and makeup in close-up is phenomenal. LOVE. Agree that the hippie chick deal is bleh, however. I also agree with Anathema_Device that it would have been nice to see some editorial fashion on her that moved away from her own personal style. Shake it up, girl!

  • marilyn

Is this an ad for a 70’s porn movie?

    • Pennymac

Not that I’d know what an ad for a 70’s porn movie would look like, but SNORT!

  • MzzPants

They made her soft and pretty.  She usually steps out with such a severe face…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22917995 Nicole Renee

I agree with the sensuality of the shoot. Her skin is like beautiful milk though! So jealous!

  • Sophie Collier

She’s a great singer and musician, but so not a glamour gal.

  • quiltrx

    She looks really beautiful!

But I have to say, she’s not even being consistent.  She’s moved on to an Art Deco sort of phase, and I would rather have seen an editorial of those kind of looks.

  • ccm800

    so androgynous

  • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

I wish you would cover Shirley Manson. She’s been giving serious face in promo shoots for Garbage’s new album.

  • CatherineRhodes

She looks really beautiful with her hair waved a bit and her make-up done.

  • guest2visits

That second pic is just one of the nicest; puts her profile in a new perspective. Usually I think the bangs are too much, but
    it’s all working here.

  • kingderella

i like the colours and lighting here. i enjoy flo doing hippy, but im not sold on the gown here… it strikes me as more ‘rich bitch resort’ than ‘hippy’.

  • anotherkate

She’s been hiding that bod under all that long-sleeved, caftan-y shit? If I had that, I’d be in nothing but bandage dresses and skinny jeans, for real.

  • andreawey

At least she looks her age for a change, yeah it’s  overdone but she looks pretty and young

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

She reiminds me of a young Vanessa Redgrave in Camelot.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

oh TLo, you are so bored and cranky.  you need to come and stay in my mountain home and pick wildflowers for a while.  you’ll be looking like hippie chicks yourselves in no time.

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

She looks young, fresh, and fantastic.

  • Aurumgirl

I always think she’s playing on that whole Edward Burne Jones’ pre-raphaelite Jane Morris look, which is very beautiful.  But if she’s going to have a career that lasts longer than a few minutes, she’s going to have to keep forcing people to look beyond that image of herself.  I hope she can get this across to more stylists who plot out these editorials for her, because this is already getting old.

She looks a great deal like Vanessa Redgrave in her Camelot days…which is to say, absolutely lovely.

snooze fest.  so over her.  love her music, tired of her presence.

  • ryaddictive

you’re over flo.  heh.  swidt?  *smortle*

  • RzYoung

Yamn. Also are they still trying to convince us that she’s in her 20s?

  • Andrew Walker

Hippy-dippy, whatever. I love her music and thus, will love her forever.

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

    Like Vanessa  Redgrave in Camelot.
