Emporio Armani Spring 2013 Menswear Collection

Posted on June 28, 2012

Well, HELLO NIPPLES! Short-shorts, sheers and going shirtless under a jacket are apparently going to be the norm for spring 2013. Or at least it will be if you’re an Armani male. Nipple-rama aside, we actually really like this collection. Even with the tiny shorts and sheer tops, there’s a crisp, tailored vibe here that fits the Armani name. And we like that the brand tries to offer more than just the same old silhouettes and shapes. It’s hard to make traditional menswear look interesting – and despite what you might think, this is all fairly traditional with only slight twists. Why can’t we live in a part of the world where shorts and suit jackets are the norm? Of course, it would also have to be a part of the world where every man has spectacular legs, but still. Let us have our dreams.

Oh!  Was feeling sleepy and that first photo woke me up.

    • the Magic Mike Pecs Ahoy trend it’s somehow WORSE....FoxGetPositionWork.blogspot.com

  • Scott Hester-Johnson

God help me, I love this stuff.

  • clatie

I like most of it, too.  EXCEPT for the weird sheer stripey things.  They are GROTESQUE.

    •  That is one of the worst pieces of clothng i’ve ever seen.

    • Seriously, and combined with the Magic Mike Pecs Ahoy trend it’s somehow WORSE

      • Vlasta Bubinka

Magic Mike Pecs Ahoy Ken Doll! Comes with nipple trap shirts in 3 different colors! Also comes with a messenger bag and massage sole slide shoes!

        • Spicytomato1

And shorts with an adjustable hemline…long, medium and teeny-tiny.

          • Vlasta Bubinka

and for special occasions- 1 metallic marblebag!

    • kimmeister

Underboob – that’s a no for both sexes.

    •  agreed – it’s like someone slapped a stripey bodysuit on someone and expected us to believe it.

    • littlemac8

Really !  Didn’t need to use that thumbnail because it’s not really representative but it really got my attention…except it was all in an EWwww way!  Last short short suits look like the male version of Alice in Wonderland who drank and potion and grew and grew and grew…eventually splitting out of her clothes!

    • Aly Light

I find them obscenely sexy. So there. It’s that thing where seeing just a peek makes it seem more illicit.

  • MilaXX

Pretty nice collection if you ignore the stupid sheer shirts. I say pack those up with all the fugly mullet dresses and sheer skirts and the runway will be a much better place.

  • The same way that I feel creeped out and skeevy when I see female models basically infantilized in editorials – I also feel that way looking at this last photo.  Those shorts are too short to be worn with the jacket, it makes it feel like a boarding school for very sexy boys.  Gross.

    • Lori

My first thought was that they were on the way to the auditions for an AC/DC cover band. Not really a good look in other contexts.

  • I approve of nipple-shirts. They will serve as very clear markers of who to avoid.

The rest is fine. The boys are hot.

  • Saucysusan

A little confusing guys..headline says Armani, your comments say Gucci. I like everything here but the nipple shirts & the short shorts. Oh & again with the shorter pants length which every designer seems to be doing. Yuk!

  • gucci or armani? TLo DECIDE!!

  • amf0001

this is an aside, but are all the male models always waxed completely?  None of these men have hair on their legs,  and I don’t know when that started to happen… just looks a bit weird to me

    • FlamingJune1967

Ugh!  You are right.  Thankfully, this is definitely NOT a trend we will see spread to the general populous!

    • Aly Light

       I’m wondering… based on those short shorts… if they’re all tucking…

  • A. W.

Going off of this and the Versace collection, I assume that the look for Spring 2013 is “pride parade all day every day”? Better get to the gym, men!

  • Oh lovely! Lots of this is yummy! The nipple shirts are High Larious. The shorts suits make me giggle.

  • MzzPants

  • I feel like this has something to do with global warming…

  • I don’t know. Some of the construction looks like the kind that gets ripped to shreds on Project Runway. Kind of like the short shorts, but not on totally waxes legs!

  • For the most part sloppy and ill fitting. And those pants! Insane crotches.

You can almost hear the designers saying, “This is a terrible collection. How can we distract the buyers so they don’t notice? Nipples and belly buttons! That’ll do it.”

  • michelle shields

I must be getting old. I don’t find anything attractive about this collection. Why do all the models look like they want to jump off the runway and kill someone?

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you…I alternated between horror and amusement. And the faux fierce facial expressions had me all out laughing by the end. I do have to say that while the collection is unattractive to me, the models are most definitely not.

    • PRFan

That was my first thought – jeez, why do they all look so mad?  Then I really looked at the clothes.  Nipple shirts and short shorts – really?

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

It’s nice to see some male models who look like they regularly visit the kitchen and the gym.

  • The first pic freaked me out with the nippledom, but LORDY have I been a fan of manlegs since Magnum P.I. made me feel funny (in a good way) as a youth, and I wish shorts like this were mandatory in the summer. And maybe Selleck Moustaches, but that might be a personal thing.

    • Nope.  Selleck love/lust never dies!

      • dress_up_doll

Ain’t that the truth. Still lovin’ him after all these years.

  • SpcilK

I really like this collection minus the par-tay boy see-through shirts. Who needs magic mike when you can look at this for free!

    • amywinns

I do. I need it. I need that movie, a flask and a room full of girls and gays. Yes.

      • SpcilK

        Ha! I get it.

  • j_anson

I really like their sweaters. Which is not a sentence I say often.

  • I’m loving a lot of the shoes. The styling is very 19th Century rugby tournament to me. They just need waxy mustaches.

  • PeggyOC

Shudder. Those sheer sweaters are just redicu-silly.

  • the shapes are interesting (both the guys and the clothes) but i’m so over the greyed-out color.  the two guys with the short shorts and the suit and tie just look bonkers (last photo). the guy on the left looks really pissed off because somebody cut his pant legs off.

  • hughman

As Coco Chanel said, “before you leave the house you should always apply ice to one thing – your nipples”. Wait, that was her wasn’t it? Maybe it was an old housemate I had at the Pines.

  • mjude

lets hope your dreams come true tlo!

  • why have i never noticed that they shave their legs?
    liking most of the garments.
except for the sheer nipple shirts.  not my cuppa.

  • Terence Ng

Nothing like an inguana-eyed torso on a man. Mmm!

  • Lina_bee

I love the striped sweaters. The rest is very…Hamptons meets Berlin.

  • Lilithcat

Those shirts look like a bandage fetish gone amok.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Bai Ling was the inspiration for this collection. Sometimes I wish I had been a skinny twink instead of a big fat hairy bear.

  • I think I just lost my lunch.

  • “…
going shirtless under a jacker…”   Okay with me.

    • amywinns

      Tsk! Naughty!

  • Jessi03

I cannot stop laughing at that first shirt.  I’ve been sending this page to every man I know.  Where besides Pride would you EVER wear it? And who wants to wear sleeves at Pride, anyway?

    • hilbobaggins

I can’t stop laughing at the whole collection.  They all so seri-ous with their important places to go in their teeny weeny shorts and saggy crotch pants.

  • amywinns

I’m not a big body hair fan, but there’s something off-putting about the juxtoposition of the agressive/butch aspects with the pretty/porcelain aspects. They are like colored marbles statues doing an Angus Young impression. This is a weird, unsexy combination to me. And I really like the Olympian body type on parade here (distinctly muscular, but not over-inflated). Doesn’t help that most of the crotches are insane. The sweaters/white trousers are my favorite look here overall.

  • sashaychante

OH MY…those short in the last photo…just odd.  Overall, I don’t mind dress shorts on men, but all of these seem too short to me.  Sorta creepy in that last photo…little boy blue?  Or maybe Angus Young…though he never looked so creepy, just intentionally silly.  Have to get my husband one of those sheer stripe shirts.  Sure he would immediately don and take me out on the town.

  • JimMcC

In the second full row, do I see…shorts over shorts?! And oh man, those first and last pictures made me LAAAAAAAAUGH. There may well be some nice pieces here, but some of this is mega-hideous.

  • What happened in the middle when it turned into pure 90s Boyband

  • kimmeister

Holy moly that Asian model has amazing cheekbones.

  • I hope Joe Manganiello starts wearing this line exclusively from now on.

    • I could get behind that. Mind, I’m hoping for Chris Hemsworth myself.

  • lordandtaylor

When did male runway models get to hot and hunky. No more rail thin twinks. This is a good thing.
Love the striped sweaters. And man bags.

  • ElitheMonkey

Please let those sheer shirts not become popular. I *really* don’t want to see average guys in them, they’re bad enough on the models!

  • Puckndc

They all look pretty angry about it all…

  • I was at a Grand Am race in Wisconsin last weekend, and a guy in the Ferrari hauler was wearing a suit jacket with shorts.  I figured he wasn’t from the area : )  As an added bonus, Patrick Dempsey walked by me soon afterwards.

  • Abigail Speltz

Is it just me, or do the longer shorts look like they were “borrowed” from an Old Navy commercial?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

    I can see his moobies.

Seriously, though, I think the sheer-striped sweaters could look pretty awesome if deployed correctly. I’m liking a lot of the leather pieces and suiting, but the shorts are dreadful (though it’s nice to see that the short shorts ride up between men’s thighs just as much as women’s).

  • golspie

Some of these outfits could be worn by humans. But not many.

  • Leonardo Alves

    It’s kinda cool… But I don’t think I can pull it off!

The jackets are really nice! I want all of them… specially the middle one of the 2nd row!

  • Rand Ortega

Nipple shirts– More International Male rejects. Is this resurgence a nostalgia thing? Everything else– very hot.

  • judybrowni

i’m not quite 5′ tall, my eyes are on nipple level.

so, depending on who is attached to them, those see-thru shirts would be either an assault or a pleasure.

  • Can I just have those two boys in the 5th to last photo? I don’t care what they’re wearing, I would like them to be my cabana boys.

  • Pants_are_a_must

They all look like the male version of Mean Girls. If Mean Girls was set in a public boarding school in Britain, that is.

Also, is it just me, or are most of these guys pretty damn big for models?

  • guest2visits

Cannot believe anyone would do those see thru tops for a male model. So awful.
Most of the rest is nice; except some of the very flappy shorts.

  • theblondette

Their hair-free legs make me sad.

  • nannypoo

The moob shirts are just stupid.

  • Look at them THIGHS. God, I hope they’re really back…

    • littlemac8

What was that short lived Thursday man meat thing on TLo?  This would be a perfect entry for that little category!

  • Noshmek

Pink Floyd and Star Trek – awesome!

  • Jacqueline Wessel

What’s with all the baggy low-hanging crotch areas on some of the pants? Spoils the view…luckily there are the nipple shirts.

  • Sorry, suit jacket with matching trouser shorts are: SCHOOLBOY UNIFORM which has been completely devastated by a certain mad expatriate Scotsman in a somewhat notorious hard rock act.  “Highway to hell” anyone?   I just cannot take that seriously as a concept or an incipient trend.

Moob shirts…interesting idea on the right (as in chiseled) male physique and I can completely get behind them as club wear.  However, I’m old enough to remember when fishnet took off, and the unfortunate, eye-searing results of that “trend” so I’m hoping the see through top with stripes look doesn’t catch on.

The shoes on the model with the moob shirt looked like crocs to me at first.

  • Aurumgirl

That’s what happens when people fool around with illusion netting.  Eventually it turns up where no one ever wants to see it.

  • lonepear

I do like that we’re seeing male models who look fit rather than starving… but I think those striped sheer shirts would look much better (or at least, less bad) on men without bulging pecs…

  • Love the sweaters.

  • formerlyAnon

Some really nice coats & jackets. Probably nice shirts, but they’re hard to see. Some of the shorts yea, others nay – but they aren’t going to be paired with a suit jacket in my pedestrian circles this year.

I guess it’s because menswear by definition has more pieces than women’s, but this is yet another collection where I’d have to dis-assemble the ensembles to find all of the desirable items – I think as shown it may have impact but appears as less than the sum of its parts.

  • joything

Love every single jacket here, and those asymmetrical white shirts flopped open.  Those are interesting.

    The rest is silence.

  • eight_of_nine

I’m sorry, I just can’t stop laughing.  The best thing is that their Serious Model Faces just look so angry!  “I’m SUPER PISSED about wearing this sheer striped shirt!  Nothing makes me ANGRIER than BUSINESS SHORTS!”

  • silaria

Who’s the model with the long hair and sunglasses?  He’s lovely, and I feel the need to google him.

  • quiltrx

I really like the shoes (except the…I guess they’re sandals?) and the coats/jackets.  The rest is good except the weird sheer stuff.  I think Big Gay Al would say those are TOO gay.

Oh, and I LOVE the boys.  They all look like European hockey players, which is one of my very favorite hunk genres. 🙂

  • texashistorian

How can one see these photos and not just burst out laughing? I can’t. Sorry, I don’t mean anything bad against guys in fancy clothes, it’s just that designer menswear kinda looks… well, kind of silly. There’s just no innovating around basic tops and trousers, even if a designer tries to make trousers that look like a person can hide a cantaloupe in the front.

  • Anyone else feel like the last shot is from a all-male-stripper version of “Book of Mormon”? Hello, indeed.

  • boweryboy

I like the shoes and I would wear a lot of the shorts but the rest alludes me.

  • Janet Selman

There are some lovely pieces here. Love the striped sweaters & white pants (of course, the average American male has too much tum for that look). BUT I just don’t get hairless males. I find it creepy.  Chest and leg hair is a sign that a male is of reproductive age. I don’t understand the need to make men look prepubescent.  I prefer MEN, not BOYS.  Can you imagine John Wayne, Clark Gable, Sean Connery, Paul Newman, shaved smooth and emolliented to within an inch of their epidermal lives?  (OK, I’m kind of showing my age).

  • aimee_parrott

The men are beautiful, but those sheer striped tops are actually making me angry.

  • Susan Crawford

I haven’t seen so many shorts since the days of “Magnum, P.I.” and Tom Selleck. I like the slightly longer ones a lot, actually. The jackets are pretty awesome, but honestly, the sheer striped sweaters/tees? I don’t care HOW casual your Fridays are, this is not gonna fly in the real world. But fun for clubbing and pool parties chez Giorgio.

  • donkeygospel6

    I’d suck those tits.

  • glennethph

Those sheer shirts look like that toilerbrush-inspired gown that Rihanna wore somewhere (MTV Music Awards?).

  • Absolutely not, sorry, Armani. And the last picture scares me. These guys will hit you because they have to wear these clothes that would even look stupid on 8-year-olds.

  • Linderella

I think I like every single pair of shorts, but very few of the shirts, and absolutely detest every single pair of SHINY-SHINY pants.

  • ccm800

GOD I hope some shorter shorts catch on – mens clothes are bordering on guy-Sherpa these days.

  • Why do most of the pants fit so terribly??? So Long in the Crotch!!

  • TieDye64

The nipple sweaters(?) make me laugh so hard! Crazy stuff. But, I’ll take the dude with the long hair. Rather yummy.
