Emma Stone in Monique Lhuillier

Posted on June 06, 2012

We don’t do “IN or OUT” posts for things like TV appearances, but we go back and forth on this one and we may need the help of the minions to come to a decision.

Emma Stone makes an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in a Monique Lhuilier accessorized with Christian Louboutin pumps.

Monique Lhuillier Fall 2012 Collection

Christian Louboutin ‘Un Bout’ Pump

On the one hand: eye-catching! That’s not always something she manages. On the other hand: Leather dress! Which is a dicey proposition most of the time. Very few leather dresses look chic and of those, it takes an even tinier percentage of the population to work one. But this is a very simple leather dress, which does a lot to mitigate the heaviness. There’s no real fit to the bust, which means her boobs look like two pieces of fruit under a tablecloth. And then there’s the whole thing about leather dresses never quite fitting the wearer that well. We suppose you can’t fit leather as easily as you can traditional woven fabrics. That would explain why practically every leather dress we’ve ever seen looked either too big or too small on the wearer. But this really is a pretty nice leather dress and the color looks spectacular on her. If it was fitted slightly better and if she ditched those Louboutins, which have been seen far too often on the RC lately, we’d be less ambiguous as to the look’s merits.

What do the kittens think? Yes, she’s charming and cute. But what do y’all think of the dress on her?

  • The dress is okay. The shoes make me want to die, and the lipstick matching both is UGH.

    • I second that. I am so tired of those shoes already, and I suspect we haven’t seen the end of them.

      • After the show, let’s hit Chateau Marmont for the drinks...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

    • jilly_d

you took the words out of my mouth.

  • I can’t get past the blonde… makes her look like LiLo before the fall.

    • Beth G

Amen… she NEEDS to stay a redhead.

      • drdarke

If she were a redhead, the look would come together better, I think. The leather dress fits her okay – especially for leather.

Ehh – the shoes don’t bother me one way or the other, really.

    • ChristySchiff

“LiLo Before the Fall” is a perfect name for a little band playing LA clubs.  After the show, let’s hit Chateau Marmont for the drinks…

    • Unlike Lindsay, I’m pretty sure she’s actually a natural blonde, and the red is a dye job.

      • Corazon Nunez

Yeah, look at her slightly-brown roots.

      • This is true. But, much like with Gillian Anderson, just because the blonde is natural doesn’t mean it’s better on her than her adopted red.

    •  YES.

      Whither the copper, lady?!?

  • I agree on ditching the shoes. And I think she could have used that belt from the original dress, as she looks excessively long-waisted without it.

    • paginatrix

And what is up with those $#@!! ugly shoes? Are these and putty-platforms the only choices (if you don’t want the Jimmy Choo sandals)?

    • Cathy S

Yes, I think she needs that belt. It would help. And ditch the shoes.

    • Agree, that belt really makes it great. Without, not so much.

  • Sobaika

I wish she had included a different color to mitigate the red-orange shoes/dress/lips but she looks pretty great.

  • Michael_Jones

I didn’t like those shoes the first time.  Can someone please declare them “over” ??

  • carolynmo

Love the dress but it needed the black belt (?) shown on the model. And the maybe the model’s shoes.

  • MilaXX

I think she should have kept the black belt and worn those Loubies in black. There’s too much orange red and the slightly different shade of the shoes clashes with the slightly different shade of the lip. A bit of black would have broken that up and made this look less leather Barbie. I also think a neutral lip would have been better.

  • I like the dress (like the model with the belt better) but the shoes: ACK. I hate that style with the stupid clear parts and orange + red = looks like someone is color blind. It either needs to match or contrast when you’re wearing that much red.

  • cmb92191

I couldn’t pull it off.. so more power to her.

  • Violina23

I think it could have used a little embellishment on the waist, and the shoes are a bit weird, but overall I think she looks fantastic

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

in.  hair is pretty.  dress isn’t too bad. color is lovely.  but i’ll bet the dress has a squeeka-squeeka voice of it’s own.

  • the dress needs the belt to help give it definition.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I like it. I even think the stupid shoes work better here than anywhere else I’ve seen them. She does totally need to fix her hair color though.

    • judybrowni

She’s soooo much prettier with dark hair.

That dishwater blonde washes her out.

  • everest19

Needed a belt. The orange in the shoes is making my eyes twitch.

    • kimmeister

The double ankle straps make mine twitch!

  • Hetha Innis

Meh. Would have left a belt on it. Hate those hideous shoes that are showing up everywhere.

  • the dress makes her boobs look kind of weird and I’M TIRED OF SEEING THOSE SHOES.

  • It looks better when she is sitting down, but I don’t particularly like it. Though my bigger problem with this is SHE IS LITERALLY WEARING ONE FUCKING COLOR WHAT ARE YOU DOING MS. STONE YOU ARE BETTER THAN THIS.

  • OUT.  red leather in summer? no thank you.  i think leather dresses should be left to victoria beckham and gaga, not miss stone.

  • I love it! I would have gone for different shoes and some slightly bolder accessories, but I think it’s great!

    • oohsparkley!

I love it too.  And I was thinking I was alone.  Had to read the comments until I found someone to agree with.  She looks great.

  • BazoDee

I think she pulls it off.

  • The dress looks good on her, I have to admit. I get all cleavage-sweaty just thinking about how hot it must be under the leather, though. Ick.

Also: G-d, those shoes. They have to go. Clear plastic/pvc will never look anything but cheap.

  • Larkin21

Don’t like the shoes and prefer the dress with the belt as the model is wearing it.

  • Sue_Asponte

I like the dress; it looks simple, easy and calm, but rockin’ at the same time. Mixed feelings about the shoes, landing somewhere around “it could’ve been worse.” But I do get a feeling of calm and unfussy from the dress that makes me really like the overall look. So if you want a vote, I vote IN.

  • Beth G

I appreciate the fact that she can wear the dress and sit down without showing her ladybits.  The dress seems a little heavy for June to me… but it’s ok.

  • Julie Fountain

The dress is pretty but it seems like an odd choice for June.

  • Dot

Hate those shoes and think the dress looks far better with the belt. That long column of red really needs something to break it up a bit.

  • Lina_bee

Needs the belt, both for defining her figure and for color contrast. The shoes are certainly eye-catching, but I’d have preferred nearly anything over plastic pumps. She continues to be completely adorable, though.

  • Isn’t it time for this shoe to just die?  Plastic…gross.  The leather dress isn’t that bad, but it definitely needed a belt and/or better accessories.  She’s damn cute though.

  • The dress doesn’t offend, but the shoes do. And when is she going to switch back to being a redhead? Aren’t they done shooting this movie anyway? Whatever, she’s still my girl crush.

  • vanjar

The only one who can rock a red leather dress is Tina Turner.

  • Joey Melliza

she shouldn’t have done it without the belt

  • ChristySchiff

Horrible shoes.  She could have used a belt.  Otherwise, looks great.  I like how the dress kind of makes leather lady-like.

  • RebeccaKW

I do like it, but I wish she’d kept the belt to give her some definition.  However, the shoes!  Satan spawn!  Throw holy water on them!

  • All I can say is it’s the fisrt time someone makes these “un bout” pumps work as more more than a mere cocnept. It looks clever anc chic on her, not just cheap alien !

  • I think standing it would have looked better with the belt, but while seated, i.e. the majority of her appearance, it could have gotten pretty wonky looking.  I guess that is the tricky thing with television appearances.  She looks good enough, but I don’t like the monochromatic quality of the look with the shoes, dress & lipstick.  Also those shoes need to die a public, violent death as a warning to all other shoes.

  • nancymae

    I miss her red hair.

  • lordandtaylor

It needs the belt shown on the model.

  • leftcoastpickle

I prefer the dress with the belt, for sure. I think her hair is the wrong colour for her and for this dress.  I actually like the shoes in this context! I wish she had flaming red hair and the dress was cobalt blue! I’m not sure why I wasn’t consulted.

  • nancylee61

I don’t like the color on her at all.
I think the shoes are horrible with the dress – they are much more orange-y than the red of the dress.
    I hate her hair blonde.

  • granddelusion

I think the dress is pretty. I like it better with the bold belt, but it’s still nice. Hate the shoes. And I keep wondering what’s going on at the neck. I think it’s her mic, but the color and her hair makes it look like a mistake.

  • aristida_girl

I have to say even as a lover of leather I don’t like it, it looks to heavy and sweat-inducing, and I think a stronger shoe would have made the look more proportionate.

  • Sophie Collier

Not a bad dress but it’s not really working on her.  Partially because it’s SO basic. The belt would have helped.  Also, the combination of high neckline and her hair length/style makes a visual mess.

  • introspective

My first reaction is out- for the lack of belt, the baggy fit and those fit-inducing plastic matchy shoes. The outs with a small o since overall she still looks decent but fix these areas and shed have hit a homerun…

  • TSkot

Leather dresses just look waterlogged and heavy.  OUT

  • Okay dress. Ugly shoes. Next!

  • m0r0

miss the black belt accent that was on the model’s version.

  • donkeygospel6

Her awesome personality does most of the work, and prevents her from looking like a sports car seat.

  • JanieS

I hate the dress and I hate the shoes, and I hate that someone who looks so good as a redhead is  being blonde all the time now.

    Basically, I’m full of hate.

  • marilyn

I realize the dress is mixing a traditional dress with leather material.  Good idea, but not good here.  I always think leather clothes  should be edgy.  This is Donna Reed.  In leather.  This is just odd.  She did not add any accessories.  The runway model added a black belt and the edgy shoes, which made a statement.  This is a miss.  Making the dress a shocking color does not fix the incongruity.   I think it is the wrong color for her anyway.  She is very pale, and the dress color makes her look positively sickly.  Perhaps she needs a (faux) tan, since it is summer.

  • I hate those shoes with the fire of a thousand suns.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I’ve just never understood leather dresses — as TLo points out, they never ever fit correctly and they never look comfortable. I had a leather mini skirt when I was (muchmuchmuch) younger and even that was only comfortable when you were standing up and standing still.

  • Sara__B

She IS charming and cute, and seems approachable and normal, which makes it hard to evaluate what she wears with a coldly critical eye. She looks fine, but something’s missing, and it isn’t just the belt — it’s her own style and personality. She brings very little of that special something most of us find so appealing into her outifts.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

dress is okay, could be a little tighter–or maybe thats just how i’m used to seeing leather, you know, fitting the form. otoh, it does look nice enough.

the shoes are so awful though. i have no idea how theyve become a thing. were every other pair made by every person worse this season? really?

    edited to add:
it does look way better w/ the belt.

  • Out. Needs the belt.  Also, her legs are a totally different shade than her arms and face… is that a makeup for tv thing?

  • Judy_S

I think she looks good, for the purposes of a talk show. It’s just interesting enough to keep the focus on her without having you worry about her flashing the audience etc.

  • I HATE THOSE SHOES. Why do they keep coming back?

  • raininmai

I would like it better styled more like the model with the black belt and shoes, minus the gloves. But she looks great in this dress and it’s a perfect choice for the venue and looks perfect for sitting on the stage and being comfortable.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I loved “two pieces of fruit under a tablecloth”.

I don’t like it. She looks kind of shapeless in that thing.
Plus, it’s a red leather dress. That should get a NAY just on principle.

  • The dress is just okay, should have worn the belt. I hate those shoes!

  • VicksieDo

    She’s charming and cute!!

  • pookiesmom

    I absolutely love it!

  • BrooklynBomber

Love the shape of the dress, hate the heavy leather; the shoes are terrible.

  • Allison Evans

I’m blinded by my love for Emma Stone.

  • PrunellaV

Cone bra shoes are the new putty pumps.

  • Judy_J

If you’re going to wear a leather dress, then I suppose this is the way to do it.  The shape is nice, great color, and she’s carrying it off well.  Those shoes, however, are really getting on my nerves.  They make her toes look like they are stuffed into the corner of an envelope.  Howver, I am giving this an IN, but barely.

  • crash1212

I could like it, but it really needs the belt. I like the idea of the shoes, but can’t help but think that they must cloud up should one get sweaty feet…right? Yuck. Over all, this coulda been a contenda, but she didn’t stick the landing. Mixed metaphors anyone?

  • CrazyAuntie

Out – dress is much too heavy and droopy.  Love the shoes – and she’s still lots of fun!

  • Take the shoes out of the equation, and she looks adorable and chic. Those Loub’s have been all over the damn place lately, and I. Am. Over. Them.

  • Jecca2244

I want to be her friend. and the dress is a bit too long. wouldn’t say no if someone offered me the shoes.

  • MzzPants

Meh…some kind of black belt might have made a difference.

  • It looks as though she is wearing a leather coat, backwards.

  • sashaychante

    Not those shoes AGAIN!

  • suzq

I miss the belt that was on the model.  There’s something to be said for making yourself look like a car interior when you’re making an appearance on Leno’s show.  I think it looks nice.

  • ryaddictive

i think she should have kept the belt.

  • Jangle57

Agreed, add a belt and lose those shoes!

  • jw_ny

ugh…those shoes have got to go!   she looks good in general and the dress is ok….not a fan of it in general and dislike how it has a mind of it’s own as to how/where it folds, bubbles out, etc.

  • Allison Woods

    No leather dress.

    Hate the shoes.

  • JMansm

I like those shoes, but her hair is really boring and I like the silhouette and colour of the dress but I wish it wasn’t in leather.

  • jmorino08

I liked the runway version better. Leaving on the belt/black insets (whatever is it) might have mitigated the fit problems via the magic of the optical illusion.

As for the shoes, who is convincing people that see-through shoes are chic? Is there a vast plastic conspiracy going on?

  • SignLadyB

Honestly, if you were doing an IN/OUT I ‘d be all over an IN. I really like everything about the dress and don’t see the problems you called out regarding fit. And the shoes with the dress are to die for (although I agree in general that shoe is getting old). And I like it better on her than on the model.
    So there, Ha!

  • It needed the belt.

  • Marian Humin

I love it! She can pull off a leather dress. I miss the red hair though.

  • MarissaLG

In. The color of the shoes looks just off enough that it clashes with the dress in a really distracting way. Overall, though, I think she looks very pretty.

  • Monabel

With bust darts and a center seam you can fit a bodice. I don’t think this is as ghastly tight as many we have seen.  In addition, those slightly different reds look good to me. For some reason, Americans are skittish about combining colors that are close. Almost matches can be rich and subtle.

  • melanie0866

I think she looks great!  Love it all!

  • That shoe is getting around the block.  I believe it has been featured here at least three times now.

  • DominoEstella

I like the whole thing.. I think she’s gorgeous.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Dress, 9. Shoe, 2.

  • belfebe

I love it.  I wish it was a little bit shorter, but it’s adorable anyway.

  • unbornfawn

I like it. It just needs a little something. A belt? A necklace? Better shoes?

  • Better fit and black pointed courts and she’d have been golden.

  • Anathema_Device

I like it. I would have loved it with the black belt or insets shown on the runway version. I HATE THOSE SHOES. Can they please be retired now?

  • Kolo_Ol

I think she should have kept the belt.  And pairing it with the red shoes and lips is a crime

  • Needs a belt. Shoes are a silly choice. The dress is wearing *her*.

  • She is very plain as a blonde.  Funny how they cast a blonde actress (Kristen Dunst) to play Mary Jane (a red head), and a red head to play a blonde.

And her fake relationship with Andrew Garfield is really tiring.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Hate those shoes so much but I like the dress on her. If this were an IN/OUT post, I’ll call her an IN.

  • kingderella

still not loving this hair-colour on her, but otherwise shes pretty much flawless here.

  • guest2visits

I think both she and the model look fantastic in this dress. And the shoes look perfect.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

IN, though if I had my druthers she wouldn’t be so matchy. This is perhaps the nicest-looking leather dress I’ve ever seen. Calls back to the superhero thing a bit, as well.

  • NurseEllen

It’s too bad she didn’t keep the belt; it seems to do a lot to correct the fit issues.  Red shoes are a major error.  Black, or maybe navy might have done better for her.  Overall, I’d say IN, though.

  • erinbinek

Love the dress, hate the shoes. Love her, but she’s been making some questionable fashion choices lately.

  • PaulaBerman

The dress looks better on the model, with the black belt. The shoes are too matchy and tomato-y colored. A black belt and shoes would have helped a lot.

  • nannypoo

I’m not nearly as concerned about the dress as I am about the lack of color in her face. Has the girl never heard of blusher? She looks ill.

  • kikisayshi

I like the dress, but the shoes have got to go. Now. I also think she could have worn a really cool belt to step it up a bit. Overall she does look great.

  • silaria

I have so much hate for those shoes.  And for me, it’s not the PVC.  It’s the shape of the toe, and the way at first glance it looks like there’s nothing but a perfectly centered little toe hold keeping the shoes on her.

  • silaria

I have so much hate for those shoes.  And for me, it’s not the PVC.  It’s the shape of the toe, and the way at first glance it looks like there’s nothing but a perfectly centered little toe hold keeping the shoes on her.

  • Addicted2Glamour

With the original belt AND the fab green pumps? YES. As seen on Miss Stone? Not so much.

  • Out, but only because she is in Leno.  The dress is ehh..no strong impression either way.

  • The dress really needs a belt to take some of the heaviness off, and I hate those shoes.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

    Leno – yeuch.

First big laugh of the day at your “two pieces of fruit under a table cloth” comment.  Thank you boys!

  • Corazon Nunez

  • TieDye64

Too bad she ditched the belt. And for God’s sake can we never see those freaking shoes again? Ever. The matching lipstick is unfortunate, but those damn (and why red) shoes are hiddy. Especially with that dress.

  • Melissa Brogan

    I haaaaaaaate those shoes omg.

Um, but anyway. The dress is okay. About as good as you’re going to get in leather without going full on dominatrix-look. I don’t like everything matching. Whatever, she’s cute and she’s making a big leather dress look pretty cute, so I’m going with it.

    But someone burn those shoes.

  • drdirection

You guys totally critique TV show appearances.  What are you talking about?

  • can’t stand the shoes…. on anyone. but she’s adorable, so I’ll giver her a pass

  • IN – best use of those stupid Loubs I’ve seen

  • I liked it better with the belt, it would have added more oomph and shown her figure.

Also, please go back to being a redhead.

  • alyce1213

Add the belt, ditch the shoes.

  • Why the hell is everyone wearing those shoes? They aren’t even cute.

  • cleep1000

The color of the shoes ruins the look for me. Too close together on the color wheel. And upon a second viewing, the dress looks heavy. OUT.

  • Judih1

She got rid of her red hair but obviously still likes the color. Cause everything she has on including lip color is ted. Too much of a good thing is toxic!

  • RzYoung

Only ok, like you say the fit is a little roomy

  • Aurumgirl

I think leather’s so difficult because it actually stretches when it’s worn so close to the body.  What fits when it’s made does not fit when it’s actually put to work, and there really aren’t other fabrics that pose the same problem.  That said, I think the dress is actually good, but I am disappointed in anyone who would be talked into those shoes.  Especially because here there was an attempt made at a “monochrome” look, and those shoes are tangerine when the dress itself is persimmon.  They don’t match and someone must kick Louboutin off the red carpet for at least a year.

  • poggi

I was thinking that the belt would help too, but after thinking about TLo’s comments, I think they are right and it is really is a fit issue.  The dress fits the model better and looks good.  That said, the dress looks better on Emma when she is sitting.  This makes me think that leather dresses can fit standing and but then look too tight sitting and look good sitting but be too loose standing.  At some point, it is not going to look good if you actually have to sit and stand.

  • Those shoes have been everywhere. Clear plastic shoes remind me of my step grandma. We used to think it was just a family joke, but apparently Hollywood didn’t get the memo.

  • ccm800

    fruit roll up dress

  • TomBord

Love the dress BUT she lost it when she didn’t add the belt…. not sure the colors for her though. Pretty girl.

  • Call me Bee

She’s IN for me.  Dress looks cute for laeather, shoes are too cute and overall, she looks relaxed and charming.  Only quibbe is that the black belt would have helped to break up all that red.  But all in all, I like it.

  • sweetlilvoice

In, I love her. Probably will rent her new movie though…not going to waste that money.

  • Yes, those shoes I hate. Again. Go away, those shoes!!!

  • jfrancais

    Cute, but BURN THE SHOES.

  • The shoes ruin it, and I think the color is wrong on her, but the dress itself is not bad fit and style-wise.

  • SublimatedRage

The belt on the runway version makes it for me.  Emma needed one more accessory…..

  • EliseC

    OUT.  Leather Dress = Disgusting.
I wish people had the same reaction to leather that they now largely do to fur.

  • Liverpoolgirl

Dress looks like she dismantled a bad couch

  • librarygrrl64

Needs a belt and different shoes. Otherwise, she looks great!

  • CatherineRhodes

I think she looks fabulous!! I would have voted IN.

  • golspie

Needs the belt and the gloves to give her shape and contrast.

  • Zach Ng Zheng Yang

  • Arelis Víctor Garro

At first I thought she needed the belt, but then sitting down she really doesn’t and that is what she was there for: to sit down
    I like it

  • I like the black, white and red all over look of the model, but I think Emma looks fine. Love those shoes.

  • OUT. Dress is ok at best, shoes are hideous, and the whole look is too matchy.

  • GTrain

Not a bad look but not one for this occasion, IMO.

  • I’m just happy the dress is long enough that she can sit down without exposing the nation to her crotch. That’s a way too common mistake starlets do at talk shows
