Emma Stone in Gucci

Posted on June 20, 2012

We swear we were totally going to go a day without commenting on Emma Stone, but … Emma Stone! What are you DOING?

Emma Stone attends “The Amazing Spiderman” French premiere in a Gucci dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and Repossi jewelry.

Gucci Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren

THAT IS NOT YOUR FACE, EMMA STONE. Have that face shipped of to Dita Von Teese, who’ll know what to do with it.

It’s really odd how actresses who reach fame based partially on their good-girl looks, then spend the next several years doing everything they can not to look like a good girl – even when they’re poledancing for a movie in which they play the quintessential Good Girl.

The dress is great. We don’t think it’s necessarily her style, but she doesn’t look bad in it. It’s what her people keep on doing to her hair and face we find so upsetting. Emma, we don’t mean to alarm you, but someone on your hair and makeup team is clearly trying to sabotage your career. Be on guard. Trust no one. And for fuck’s sake, stop it with that shiny, consumptive eyeshadow. It makes you look heavy-lidded.

I think she looks totally amazing here. Way better than the twee dresses she’s been sporting. She’s an actress, she’s supposed to experiment with different looks and styles!

    • Sara Loud

      • while spectacular, would have been better had she worn it to the Dark Shadows premiere...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

    • mshesterp

Agreed–it’s dramatic and striking.  I even love the hair!  The makeup suits the rest of the look.  It may not be a WERQ, but I think she looks awesome.

    • I agree, gorgeous dress and that last shot sold me even on the makeup, if she had a more confident expression it would be a WERQ for me. And I think we can all agree that ditching the sleeves was very smart too.

    • I concur! The makeup is flawless, hair is completely laid, and that dress is perfect!

    • AudreysMom

I agree. My first thought at the thumbnail was, at least this girl isn’t boring or predictable. My second was that it I was wrong in thinking it was Emma Stone (label notwithstanding) and that I was looking at Michelle Williams. My third was that Michelle probably would have done the dress in a bright color, so my fourth was that Emma also got points for adding the vamp factor to this attempt.

    • THIS. Yes, why can’t she experiment. She looks smashing.

    • I agree! Why are we so harsh on this assessment? I happen to LOVE this look and this is a perfect example of a fair-skinned girl wearing dark lips and ROCKING it. To me, that’s inspiration.

  • L-O-V-E it! You’re crazy, TLo! It’s not her typical style but why can’t she try something different, especially when it looks good on her?

  • Funkykatt

It looks to me like she is on step one of her transformation to goth princess.

    • call_me_schmeg

yes! serving goth barbie realness. i can’t help but like it…

  • I’m hating on the hair, first of all. The really strong lip color is not het friend, and the dress, while spectacular, would have been better had she worn it to the Dark Shadows premiere.

  • I SO wish she’d go back to that gorgeous red hair.

    • mappermom

I KNOW!  I just hate it when it’s blond.  So blah.

    • guest2visits

I think she’s pretty as a redhead; but gorgeous as a blond.

  • I love the dress and lips; HATE the eye makeup. I’m convinced to never buy Revlon.

    • christinewithanx

Since when is sweaty eyelids a thing???  I have never heard anyone crave someone’s sweaty eyelids. Ew, just grossed myself out typing that.

      • tereliz

ROFL, right? Eyeshadow should not make you look like you have sweaty eyelids. EVER.

  • I LOVE this! It’s very vampy and something we’re not used to see from her but she looks AMAZING!

  • Susan Crawford

I agree 100%! I love that the long, sheer sleeves of the runway edition of this dress were removed – it definitely was a good decision. Im truly beginning to groan out loud, though, when I see these lacy and sheer uber-detailed gowns, particularly on apple-cheeked maidens like Ms. Stone.

That hair and make-up? Please, Emma, listen to Uncles Tom and Lorenzo. They only have your best interests in mind when they offer advice, and that facial spackle you are sporting, the blood-clot red lips, the iridescent eyeshadow topped by overworked hair: no, sweetie. Let your pretty face alone.

Believe me, there will be plenty of time to dig out the putty knife and the industrial strength foundation as the years fly by, but for now, use a light hand, relax, and enjoy being the cutest kid on the carpet.

  • Corey_Bell

I think she looks amazing. A very dramatic look. It doesn’t bother me that she is trying out a different look. You can only do the one look for so long without becoming boring. She is vamping it up… Let her have her fun.

  • jw_ny

It looks costume-y…like she playing a role as an evil queen, not like she’s attending a movie premier.  I do like the dress, just not sure if it’s for her tho.  The makeup is way too severe, and I really don’t know what is going on with that lopsided hairstyle.   I think she does have naturally puffy/heavy lidded, and that shiny shadow accentuates it.

She desperately needs a new style team.

    • Spicytomato1

Costume-y was my first thought, too. As in Halloween costume!

  • …..all true plus so overdone in general. I need that much makeup, she doesn’t.

  • Wow I think she looks STUNNING. Makeup and hair included.

    • Well … I DO TOO!  I think TLo ate a couple of crabby cakes this morning.

  • We should have a new catalogue, STONED, for celebrities who have bad makeup.

    • Laurie MacDougall

Stoned for what they look like, or stoned for what should be done to their makeup artists?

      • For being back-stabbed by their makeup team.

  • fursa_saida

I love the hair, am disappointed by the dress, and am on the verge of okay with the makeup, in an Interview with a Vampire kind of way.

  • Pennymac

Stonger, more dramatic dress calls for more dramatic makeup and a stronger lip, I suppose. But does she need to be wearing the Schwartzenagger of lips? All of this, taken as a whole is just too much.

  • nannypoo

If we consider this a costume instead of a dress, then I think we can all agree she looks fabulous. I don’t know why she would be in a costume for a movie premier, but work with me here. It’s glamorous and very Old Hollywood.

  • I absolutely love this look but everything above the neck is killing me right here.

and I believe it’s Karmen Pedaru on the runway, not Sigrid. Both are gorgeous though 🙂

  • NOPE!
I loved it, first time I found myself shaking my head while reading TLo! The shiny shadow is a bit much, but I love the hair and the dark lips and dramatic dress, it looks interesting against her freakishly white skin!

  • halleygee

I’m so tired of Emma Stone posts that I actually really love this!

  • susu11

This morning a guy next to me on the subway was reading the NY Post and this pic of her was inside. I was wondering if you guys were going to comment on it, and lo and behold! 🙂 It is a really striking gown but that pink eyeshadow does make her look sickly. The whole thing is very ‘Dark Shadows’ to me, but I suppose it’s good she’s keeping us all guessing for better or worse

  • She doesn’t look good as a blonde.

Funny how they casted a red-head for a blonde role, and a blonde for a red-head role.

    • Emma is a natural blonde; she’s just gone back to her roots for this. I do think she looks better as a redhead though.

      • Oh okay.  Now I look at her roots, it seems she has natural dirty blonde hair.
But why do people always use her as an example while slamming Lindsay Lohan for not staying to her natural red hair?  (Lohan does look much better as a red-head or brunette).

        • I think it’s just that she got her start with the auburn hair, so that’s what people have in their heads as their default for her.

  • kikisayshi

I think she looks pretty fabulous. The dress calls for dramatic makeup, and the dark lip is offset by the eyes. I love this look!

  • NurseEllen

The alterations to the dress (shortening the sleeves, taking away some of the frou frou at the neck) take it from beautiful to WOW.  The details in the embroidery on the sleeves, which can be seen in the closeup shot, are extraordinary.  I think she looks great for the most part–especially love the softly curled hair, which is so much better than the “hastily pinned up with flyaways” look of the past few posts. The lipstick is too much, though–her skin is SO pale, that color looks like a gash across her face.  But otherwise nicely done!

  • I think this is the most I’ve ever vehemently disagreed with TLo. I think she looks FANTASTIC and it’s one of my favorite looks that she’s ever done.

  • Aurumgirl

Glossy eye grease has never really flattered anybody.  But I think the dress looks beautiful.

  • I actually don’t mind it. For some reason I totally mistook her for Nicole Kidman, which isn’t a bad thing!

  • kingderella

LOVE the dress, especially with the sleeves off. and this is the first time i think the blond works for her. the make-up is a little harsh, but whatevs. shes looking great!

  • SapphoPoet

Wow–I love that dress. I’m ok with the make up–it’s very dramatic but I think she’s carrying it off.

  • j_anson

I actually like this. It shouldn’t be her everyday look, but as something to do for a day to shake things up, I think she’s working it and having fun with it.

  • Sobaika

Goth Flapper is a no-go. I blame Revlon for this.

    • christinewithanx

Goth flapper, exactly! She’s auditioning to be Elvira’s country cousin or something.

  • ChiliP

Me too! I thought this was going to be a WERQ when I saw the thumbnail. The makeup might be a bit heavy, but good for her for going outside of her comfort zone.

  • Emma looks pretty serene, considering that her dress is slowly being overtaken by an alien life form.

  • MilaXX

Goodness that is not her face. Her foundation is too pink and the lip & shadow only emphasize it. ENOUGH with the sheer skirt dresses. This trend cannot die a minute too soon as far as I am concerned.

  • the makeup is a little harsh, I’ll admit. but isn’t that what being an actress is? being able to look like a different person from one place to the next? she’s gorgeous blonde/red/purple-haired, strong lip or blank canvas. and the girl likes to wear interesting clothes. keep on rockin’ the free world, home girl.

  • ccm800

    over it.

  • rissa42210

I think she looks great here!

  • sweetlilvoice

I like it…she looks like Michelle Pheiffer. Of course, Michelle is 20+ years older.

  • MissMariRose

Girl, that is not your dress.

But it is mine, so hand it over.

  • Ozski

Looks like she’s taking cues from Christina Hendricks, but I think it works for her! She is having fun, I don’t think this look will be repeated any time soon, just experimenting. She is a little doll that can get away with a variety of guises.

  • AlinaValero

    michelle williams’ dark/evil twin.

  • kelsita421

the problem is this just doesn’t look like emma stone. if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it — come back, real-emma!

  • Emma Stone: Bond Villainness! I’m liking it.

  • Lina_bee

The dots of silver/white on her eyes are really distracting, especially because she’s far better suited to warm golds than cool tones. It’s a look that seems more apt for an editorial shoot than a RC appearance. OTOH, I’m enjoying the range of styles she’s been trotted out in lately.

  • Harshness.  Can’t a girl just have fun dressing up?  I think she looks amazing.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That look is alllllll Von Teese. Emma Stone, that is not your persona, and it will never be.

  • Chase Hilton

Ummmm what are you guys smoking? This is RAVISHING. The dark lip with her lighter locks placed to the side is gggggorgeous. The dress is stunning. LOVE this. I’d be careful what you say about Ms. Stone cause you might start a riot. 🙂

  • m0r0

I too think she looks fantastic here.

  • joancarol

Her hair looks like a wig that slipped sideways.

  • quiltrx

    That’s one hell of a dress–love it!

The face is a little harsh in comparison with what she’s done lately…which is look like she just rolled out of bed.  A little lighter on the lip, ditch the shiny shadow (just looks WEIRD), and I like it.

  • fungstyle

I think she looks pretty great minus the too strong lip. though the point about the eyeshadow looking consumptive is valid.

  • Little_Olive

I like that she can experiment but something got lost in translation between idea and execution.

Unless she was going for the french-noble-about-to-be-decapitated look?

Anyhoodle, I think ERW would have rocked this.

  • crash1212

Maybe it’s my lack of sleep today, but I think she looks beautiful. I love her face and she’s totally working it! Also, that’s the best hair she’s sported in awhile. I think the total look is a winner even though it looks like spiders are crawling over her shoulders. That could just be my lack-of-sleep-bleary-eyes though.

  • Call me Bee

I don’t know, gentlemen.  Either my taste is changing, or yours is, as I find myself disagreeing with you more and more.  I love this look on her.  What’s wrong with playing a different character now and again?   THe hair and makeup are perfect for this very dramatic dress, which is pretty cool.  If she’d stayed with her usual sweet-face and heair, the dress would have totally overwhelmed her.  Here–she’s taking her cue from the garment and playing up the whole look.

I am wondering if it is the case with these actors who often play a specific type, like our Emma here, or Zooey or Christina Hendricks, that when they dress as themselves, we get a little disconcerted if they don’t dress as their characters would.  I notice that when CH dresses differantly than Joanie does, or Zooey wears something not 50s-inspired, we (I’m including me, too!) tend to critisize their outfits much morely vehemently.  Italso happens when January Jones tries not to look like Betty Draper.  Me Jones loves edgy, odd looks and gets slmmed every time she wears something like that.
I really think we love their characters so much that we want the actors to BE the characters, and we get uncomfortble when their appearance is so different than the image we have in our heads.
Or…I dont know WHAT I”‘m talking about!  But I do think it happens….and I’m just making an observation.

  • allj

Yeah, the face is deeply scary. But the dress… swoon!

  • Interesting dress, completely undercut by horrible hair.  The lip color is terrible, too.

  • I don’t get it. I thought she was promoting Spiderman, not Dark Shadows.

  • Candigirl1968

I think they are trying to “keep it interesting.”  Unfortunately, it just means that her ensembles are wild lurches all over the place.

The fact that they even went with the dark nail polish just highlights that this is more costume than outfit.

  • Tenille Clarke

She looks fucking fabulous. And that lip colour is POW!

Gosh, she can’t like twee and delicate all the time – I’m so glad she vamped it up!

  • I think she looks beautiful, makeup, hair and dress.

  • BazoDee

love the lips, like the dress, hate the hair

  • She looks like sloan peterson in Legend when she turns from a good girl into a bad one and has to dance with Tim Curry in horns.

  • Qitkat

Clearly Emma is a woman who enjoys fashion, and doesn’t wish to be considered a specific type.
She looks dramatic and head-turning here. I’m imagining that when she saw herself in the mirror that she high-fived herself. Or something less silly. Like a silently mouthed *WOW!*

    Bringing It

  • Disagree – I think she looks fantastic. Love it!

  • jmorino08

Even she doesn’t look thrilled with her own face!

  • Dot

The makeup looks like it was applied by a legally blind clown, but I’m kind of loving the rest of it. Gorgeous dress.

  • SpcilK

  • Carlodog

I can’t stop thinking of the 1970s movie “Fantastic Voyage.”  She looks like she’s being attacked by antibodies.

  • AlexisPayne

Someone apparently thought she was attending the premier of Dark Shadows.

  • luluransom

    Love love love it!!

  • eight_of_nine

Although this is not Emma Stone as we know her, I think she looks great!  Sure, it looks more like she’s playing dress-up than wearing something that’s truly HER, but she’s pulling it off pretty well.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

you have to consider the source here, but to me this is, how you say, a definite WERQ. lots of people, present company included, have been wearing DvT’s face at least as long as has DvT [there are living people, not just dead people, from whom she copied it], so it cant belong only to her. &, i hate to say it, here i really love her hair. if i could figure a way to get mine to do that, i’d do that to it, i dunno, every day. not to mention the dress is gorgeous. so.

    • Corsetmaker

Yup. I love Dita but she’s not alone in her look and never has been. She’s just taken it into different quarters. And I love the hair and the dress too,

  • EEKstl

Am I crazy, or does she look FANTASTIC from top to toe: I think her hair and make-up are stunning, but I will agree that that shiny eye shadow is annoyingly distracting.

  • AuntieAnonny

How hard do you think she’s being pushed behind the scenes? I feel like the Emma I knew and liked was dumped on the side of some New Jersey highway.

  • Rebecca Johnson

I need an umbrella wrangler in my life.

  • Dudes, she looks amazing!  Let the girl have a little bit of fashion fun once in a while!!

  • LuluBI

No!  Until now, Emma could do no wrong in my eyes, but this is awful. She is the aging but kindly proprietress of a house of ill-repute (see Belle in “Gone With the Wind”)

  • judybrowni

no to morticia’s prom dress, too.

    • judybrowni

although emma does better by it than the model

  • aimee_parrott

Good grief.  I think the dress is ALMOST working on her, but I hate the makeup and hair so much.  SO much.

  • Crap, for a sec I thought she was Lindsey Lohan.

  • She always looks like she’s playing dress up; she never “owns” the looks. Not buying it. It’s ok to not be the couture girl Emma. Be yourself. You and Jessica Chastain need an intervention.

  • Joyce VG

    She was feeling moody!

  • Fordzo

Did the Gucci models have to shave their eyebrows?

  • There’s a Nicole Kidman thing going on there.

  • I never knew heavy-lidded-ness was a quality to be avoided.

  • Sarah Thomas

    I think she looks fantastic.

  • Corsetmaker

Well I’m another in the looking great camp. I like the look on her, love the dress and the hair. It’s especially nice to see something ‘done’ with hair. Instead of the usual lacklustre ‘do’s’ you usually rightly highlight.

  • understateddiva

Remember a few posts back TLo talking about Kristen Stewart’s face, and how it can take on large amounts of make-up without looking bad?  Emma Stone’s face is not like that.

  •  I kinda love it too. If I had make-up artists and hair dressers at my will, I would go totally insane with new looks, styles, etc… Otherwise, what’s the point?? lol

More than Dita, I am getting a Vanessa Paradis vibe here for some reason…

  • Judy_S

I like it. Absurdly costumey after all her fashionable impersonations and mistakes. The eyeshadow is hideous but it’s kind of balanced by the insanity of the dress + hair.

  • annrr

I  really love the dress, for fall or winter only, not summer. Looks odd this time of year. I like the hair but the make-up is hiddy.

  • Sal Neslusan

TOM, LORENZO- did you do this before coffee? she looks great. SO fun to see her play around with a different look! she has a great face for makeup.

  • It’s a nice dress but it’s pretty much stepping into the realm of goth costume.  And she’s wearing so much make-up that her head looks dipped in plastic.

  • I feel so validated when I scroll down and see that you wrote EXACTLY what I was thinking–I was afraid you were going to criticize the dress, which I think is really striking on her.  But that makeup, GASP…

  • Judy_J

Emma, please go back to your red locks and throw away all that awful heavy makeup.  You are so much prettier than this.

  • glennethph

She looks great.  And she’s hitting two birds with one stone here — she’s poledancing for Spiderman while wearing clothes that evoke her upcoming movie Gangster Squad.  Awesome.

  • snarkykitten

    I kinda really like it

  • I **LOVE** the dress! I think the makeup is a bit too harsh, and the hair pushes the look over the border into “costume” territory. But seriously… that dress is KILLA.

  • I think she looks great, too. LOVE the hair. I’m not crazy about the make-up, but it’s a minor detail in an otherwise fun, sophisticated look. I love that she obviously loves fashion and taking risks in that department. Better this than the boring, predictable, plain garb most comedy actresses sport. She looks like a movie star.

  • DaveinAlamitosBeach

I think she looks absolutely great.  I like the overwhelmingly dramatic look.  Why not?  And I think the high contrast makeup looks wicked good on her.  So sue me.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Like times a thousand, T and Lo!  The dress is pretty enough, and I don’t mind her hair this time around, but that makeup is just horrible.

  • I don’t know guys. I am kinda’ digging the way she changes it up every day. Press junkets are bo-ring, she’s having fun with it and I don’t think any of her looks have been a total fail. It seems – and I can only guess because her and I haven’t spoken in awhile – that she is trying to have fun with the clothes and be creative every day.

    • ri_dic

Totally agree. Everyone complains when people don’t change it up.

  • She looks very Nicole Kidman yes? And not in a good way.

  • TieDye64

I’m actually loving this dress on her. The hair just alright, but I’m not sold on the Morticia Adams makeup. Especially the glossy eyeshadow, which usually comes off looking odd. Overall I’ll say she’s looking pretty hot, though.

  • I love her lipstick here! It suits the dramatic dress. I love, love, love this look. You go Emma!

  • elemspbee

This look is working. Love that she’s reworking that face and no invasive surgery is called for. She’s rocking this.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I love her hair here.  LOVE.

  • rafraf25

I love the dress, and the hair is ok. But the makeup is really aging. Maybe if she had lighter eyeshadow and a less goth shade of red

  • Agreed! Great dress ruined by harsh makeup and weird hair. And I know blond is her natural color but I think red is so much more flattering on her. I miss her red hair!

  • formerlyAnon

I like the hair, and I think it works very well with the dress. The face is amateur hour and she shouldn’t have to pay someone to look so excessively wrong.

  • She looks way better than the model, that’s for sure!

  • Fire you stylist! You are pretty, you do not have to resort to tricks!

  • Don’t love it but she doesn’t look…bad.  Kristen Stewart should have worn this dress to the Snow White premier.

  • granddelusion

Everything about this look is horrific.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

She’s like a kid with a very expensive dress up box. I think it would be much more interesting to see her in different interpretations of one style, like Rooney Mara did with her Audreybot looks.

  • guest2visits

I think she’s doing this look really well. The hair, the make-up, and the dress.   It’s just another style I love on her.
And as an actress, it’s probably a good thing that she can change up her looks, now and then.
This actually looks lighter, and less hard than the recent black pantsuit outfit she wore.

  • i think she looks totally amazing and flawless. I think it all suits her wonderfully, i really dont see anything i dont like about this look.

  • The dress is a good dress, just not her dress. DVT would really work it.  The makeup is tragic.

  • berkeleygirl

Love it… If advance notices are to be believed, her career – already not exactly suffering – is about to explode.  Kristen Stewart better enjoy that #1 Forbes rating, because she’ll soon take a tumble.

  • I’ll admit, I’m a bit drunk, but that is FUCKED UP.

  • You’re on crack, T Lo. She looks fierce!

  • Christina MacDonnell

    “i got chiiiiiills, they’re multiplyin’…”

she looks like the evening gown version of sandy at the end of grease.  i don’t mean that in a good way.

  • laurenoodle

I love her but this is awful. She may be a natural blonde, but that is so not her shade of blonde. Her roots look more honey blonde-ish, which I bet would look way better/more natural. The darkish red she had is my favorite though. The makeup is too heavy and makes her look like an albino rabbit.

  • Whatever I think she looks hot to trot here. Perfect for a Spiderman related event!

  • Anonymoth

I don’t think I could ever disagree with you guys more. This is totally an immediate WERQ for me. She looks gorgeous, head-to-toe. Makeup and hair included (though the makeup could be better…but it still looks good. Love the lips). I don’t know what pictures you guys were lookin’ at.

  • Liverpoolgirl

Red hair, freckles and strawberry lips NOW!  She’s heading into Lohan territory

  • DominoEstella

I like it.  I think she looks stunningly gorgeous!

  • Emma Stone or Sharon Stone?
