Emma Stone for Vogue

Posted on June 19, 2012

The fashion/celebrity blogger’s dilemma: Do we feature even more slightly off Emma Stone red carpet looks today or do we take a break and just feature slightly perfect pictures of Emma Stone?

You know what? We’re a little tired of talking about her red carpet looks. Let’s go for the editorial. Of course, we could choose not to feature her at all today, but we’re afraid we’d be subjected to the wrath of whoever’s behind the marketing juggernaut for Spider-Man. We’re pretty sure we can be sued if we don’t feature one Emma Stone post a day until the movie grosses $500 million.

Emma Stone is featured in the July 2012 issue of Vogue Magazine photographed by Mario Testino.

Nina Ricci Fall 2012 Collection

Jil Sander Fall 2012 Collection

Dries Van Noten Fall 2012 Collection

Versus Fall 2012 Collection

Okay, we totally made most of that up. We just wanted to feature the pics because she can work a lens with those giant eyes of hers, and when you hand her over to some of the greatest stylists in the world, the results are decidedly more fabulous than her average red carpet appearance.

She is very pretty but I find this utterly boring for a Vogue shoot and her cover picture makes her look somewhat startled. Or like she just farted.

      • tresfabuleux

Yes! I too thought she was giving us a “oops I crapped my pants” look on the cover.

        • http://zapit.nu/2Am Flora Anderson

It’s kinda 1890s San Francisco Harlot updated to modern sensibilities, but it’s still pretty awesome...DemoforFrank.blogspot.com

      • NinaBoo

I’m going to be a twelve-year-old boy for just a sec and say that everytime I see the word “fart”, I giggle.  That is all.

      • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

Yes! Thank you! I was thinking she looks like she is really drunk and trying to focus on something.

      • Michaela Tuckova

Or like she was photoshopped to hell and back. She is very, very pretty, and I really like her – there might be a bit of a crush going on even – but the cover picture makes me recoil. Go away, crazy pin-point-eyed alien.

        • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

THIS, a thousand times this. Attention, cover photo photoshoppers, quit giving people those strange alien eyes. Real people, when photographed, do not have two perfectly spotlighted eyes, especially if one is partially shaded by hair. So please stop.

          • Pennymac

I had to scroll back up to really notice, and got scared when I did. YIKES!

        • http://twitter.com/luqluqe LuqeMann

I wonder if she looks at the cover and go “Oh my god, do I REALLY look like that?” and start squinting everytime she have her picture taken.

        • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

pinned eyes always remind me of heroin addicts.  of course i know that in this case it’s only a side effect of flash photography- no slur on emma intended.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

She’s a horrible horrible model. The less of these eds she does, the better we’ll all be.

    • Noshmek

Love the green dress.  It’s kinda 1890s San Francisco Harlot updated to modern sensibilities, but it’s still pretty awesome.

      • Maddie_Faddenoid

It’s gorgeous. I don’t think there’s quite enough 1890′s San Fran harlot around at the moment.

        • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

          amen to that, hippie sister.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Whoever the stylists here were, she needs to hire them, stat.

      • Sartorial_She

Hmmm; interesting. I was going to say that this shoot features many of the same issues that we minions fault Emma for on the RC. Harsh eye make-up (cover shot), unpolished/fly-away hair, unnecessarily complicated dresses, Girl That Is Not Your Hideous Pantsuit Thingy (Dries Van Noten).

        • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

See, the Dries Van Noten is my favorite of the lot.  I love the offbeat feel and the mix of patterns.

          • Louise Bryan

            Definitely my pick, also.

          • TieDye64

Yeah, I like that one as well. Love it on her.

          • Alisa Rivera

I love the Dries Van Noten but not on her. She doesn’t have that something something that’s required to pull it off. This is an outfit for Cate Blanchett or SWINTON.

          • crackineggs

That’s my favourite too.  She looks like Artful Dodger.

          • Melissa Brogan

I love it in the magazine, but if she wore it out in public I wouldn’t.

        • MilaXX

Dries Van Noten = Clown clothes, seriously I could photoshop a red ball on her nose and she’d look like an advert for Barnum & Bailey’s.

          • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

You say that like it’s a bad thing. ;-)

        • RebeccaKW

I like the cover shot.  She looks kind of reptilian in the eyes, and, weirdly, I like that.

      • 3boysful

Isn’t that the truth?  I find it interesting that in all the red carpet posts, I hate her blond hair, but these stylists have made it work.

      • gabbilevy

I feel like her stylists saw these photos a week ago or so and have been trying to imitate them, with limited success. It mostly works here, but fails in their lesser hands.

    • kathryn_dc

I think she’s such a cutie! Good to see her looking so great!

    • Hetha Innis

I can’t see Dries Van Noten or Jil Sander without also seeing Tilda, but Emma looks great in these shots. Not a fan at all of the black eyeliner on her. Her eyes look gorgeous in the Dries Van Noten!

    • TheOriginalLulu

That Nina Ricci outfit looks like it’s made of old bathmats. Still, it’s a stunning cover shot.
She really looks beautiful here. Love her in that Versus dress.

      • http://twitter.com/katshimmers Kat Wright

Agree on the old bathmats outfit! F*ckugly!

      • EditKitten

Oh, thank GOD — I feared I was alone in thinking that was incredibly fucking UGLY. (Not her,the outfit.)

      • kimmeister

I was thinking “horse blanket” or “pet bedding,” but whatever it is, still super ugly.

      • http://twitter.com/pennyeager Penny Eager

Dude. The side-panel looks like wrinkly skin. Eugh.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Those clothes are all so awful, and yet she looks fabulous in every weird bathmat / pile of knitting / stripe explosion / neon cobweb thing

    • halleygee

I am a little tired of y’all talking about her red carpet looks, too! This is a nice editorial, but the one of her in the hat is hilariously bad. Hard to believe they couldn’t have found a better shot to print.

    • ChiliP

Not sure about her face in the Dries Van Noten shot. I think she was going for “fierce” but landed on “fart”.

      • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

I couldn’t agree more. That face she’s sporting on that photo is all sorts of awkward. Like she threw up in her mouth but is trying to keep a straight face for the photo. Surely there must have been better photos?!

    • annie_wonder

I love that laughing shot of her – you can almost hear her dirty little chuckle.

    • nancylee61

I actually like the look of her in that hat. I think she looks better in slightly more masculine looks and lines, rather than the first few pretty, lacy stuff. She has that smartness, that edge, so she should keep it in mind and not dress like a girly-girl.

      • Spicytomato1

I do, too. My first thought was a bit of Beatles Sgt. Pepper crossed with John’s hat from Hard Days Night. Retro cool but very modern, too.

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

Easy, breezy, beautiful — COVER GIRL.  That’s the feeling I’m getting, rather than VOGUE.  Damn ANTM.

      • charlotte

         Huh, that’s how advertising works!

    • http://twitter.com/katshimmers Kat Wright

I wish her makeup was like this all the time. Gorgeous gal!

    • janedonuts

What is going on with her lipstick in the cover shot? Is she a clown? A cholo girl? Whoa.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      She’s perfection.  I do believe I have a girlcrush!

      • Qitkat

        Me too :)

She was so funny and adorable in Easy A, that I had no idea she could work a look like this.

Sensational, my dear. The Van Noten is fab.

    • dramamajor

That Nina Ricci dress on the cover is kind of off-puttingly hideous, and the satin side panel makes her look very naked. I thought the black lace part was the only thing covering her chest.

      • AthenaJ

Same here, until I looked at the model, I thought they put her on the cover in a bra! Instead it’s a nightgown meets sheepskin car seat cover. I think a bra actually would have been better.

    • Trisha26

She’s beautiful here but the clothes are hideous – even for typically “out there” editorials.

    • Spicytomato1

Other than looking almost unrecognizable on the cover (Photoshop shenanigans?), I think she looks gorgeous. I love, love, love all the fashions, they seem so well suited to what I imagine her true persona to be.

    • http://twitter.com/alienspouse Jen Alien-Spouse

The cover photo doesn’t look like her for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, but she looks great and like herself in all the other shots.

The green Versus dress is particularly lovely.

      • Spicytomato1

It is hard to pinpoint what’s off but it looks to me like they digitally slimmed down her face. And the poofy hair and heavy eyeliner kind of accentuates that. Why they would do that I have no idea…

      • Sara Loud

The way she’s holding her mouth in the cover shoot is very unlike her normal “face”.  In fact, if you take the pics in order, she goes from not her normal face to more like her normal face in degrees.  I think it has to do with her scrunching up her top lip towards her nose as her norm…it makes her face look more “approachable” but far less “pretty” than the cover shoot.  I think the cover is lovely.

    • twocee

Those are some seriously fugly clothes.  Maybe it’s that she is too “girl next store” to pull them off, but day-um, they really look like crap on her.

    • lordandtaylor

New rule: Emma must travel with the stylists from Vogue. Love her in the Versus dress.

    • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

      Cover looks like Heather Locklear

    • minnye

Shhhhhheeeeeeeu plop. I just fell completely in love with that Jil Sander dress. Even more, the way she’s wearing it.

    • Little_Olive

Girl can carry the clothes and look very very good -especially in the boyish one-, but cannot give face at the same time. She looks like she’s doubting the whole thing in all the shots.

The styling (of the shots, not her) a bit more interesting.

    • Lina_bee

Styling is fabulous and her eyes are just hypnotic. Also, chartreuse is totally her color. The shots themselves are pretty generic, though, in terms of poses and backdrops. I was hoping they’d do more in terms of visual context and set design. Instead they seem to have gone for “But look what a pretty face she has!” Perplexing.

    • SpcilK

High fashion is not her niche, but she is really pulling this off. Her face is mesmerizing, the photos are great and yet I still miss her with red hair.

    • crash1212

That last shot of her is pretty much the most perfect thing I’ve seen today…of course, it’s early, but still. Pretty fabulous. In fact the whole spread is decidedly wonderful and not so very photo shopped as to make my eyes twitch.

    • introspective

Her face looks beautiful. I think the removal of visible roots and the richer more strawberrry blonde also helps in bringing life to her face.

None of these outfits move me though save for the van noten jacket which is Pretty damn fab.

Overall still a much better effort than her recent red carpet and press poledances for the movie. Good show!

    • mommyca

The first glance I got at the cover I thought it was Lindsey Lohan…. bizarre….

    • Megan Patterson

Her hair and makeup are especially great here. I still miss the red though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Thanks God she’s seated in that Jil Sander dress; it’s just so “student” when you see the dress as a whole.

      • https://twitter.com/#!/rmccarthyjames RMJ12345

I am not a fan of that dress. The skirt is kind of great, but the top looks like shapewear to me.

    • KateMaryC

I love the face she’s making in the Dries. Not the usual starlet fallback pout or smile. Quite striking.

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Agreed.  It’s almost a sneer, no?  And notice that the only open-mouthed photo of her is when she’s smiling!

    • Liverpoolgirl

I love Emma Stone….she should hire a new stylist because this is how she should look!

    • erinbinek

      Gorgeous. Love every single thing.

    • SapphoPoet

I think I am rapidly approaching Emma Stone overload because I can’t really come up with anything to say about any of this.

    • nancymae

The power of hair just cannot be denied. She looks so non distinctive as a blond. the Dries photo is my favorite out of the bunch but the jacket is doing all the work. She looks like a literal canvas. Blah and blank.

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

I think the green  Versus dress is “her dress”.

    • guest2visits

      So beautiful; although the Dries Van Noton should have been her cover. The Nina Ricci dress looks like a wreck;
      love the nubby coat though.

    • http://twitter.com/moore60526 Karen Moore

The Nina Ricci outfit is hiddy. Wool boucle and lingerie in an unholy cutout combo. NOT edgy, dumb.

    • MightyMarshal

Those are some ugly clothes, but they work on her somehow. Way more than they do on the models, that’s for sure.

    • HobbitGirl

I can’t with that first dress. Just so hiddy.

    • AthenaJ

I love that Versus dress, but Emma looks dangerously close to a nip slip here.

      • kimmeister

She looks close to a nip slip in everything but the Dries!

    • alyce1213

Great editorial, great face.  I almost wish you hadn’t posted so much about her before — I was getting Emma Stoney weary.

    • marilyn

Butt-ugly clothes + hot come-on pose= Cheesy home made soft porn attempt.  Not Vogue.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NOWQRXMYKVEJBF2FRWGEYQLPUM K

I think she looks best in the Jill Sandler. The slightly mussed hair goes with the dress and the colors go with her skin tone. Makeup for once looks soft and pretty. She has hooded eyelids and softer smoky looks are better than harsh liner. Everything else seems a bit much, harsh, but not in a fierce way.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

That nina ricci looks like the saddest nightgown ever. But she is KILLING it in that ugly Dries Van Noten and that Versace.

    • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Glam Dixie

All of those dresses, except the Versus, are hideous when seen full view on the runway.

    • eight_of_nine

That Nina Ricci look is so fug I can’t stand it.  It’s like a Project Runway challenge where all they had to work with was an old nightgown and some rejected Chanel fabric.

    • tereliz

I really like how textural all the pieces of clothing are in this shoot, but other than that it’s like there’s no real connection between the shots. Whassup with that, Testino? Plus, Emma’s facial expressions in the Dries Van Noten and Nina Ricci shots are kind of… distracting is the nicest word I can think of. LOVE that Versus dress on her!

    • KSpence

There’s something vaguely Linda Evangelista-y about her.

    • Bozhi

She looks better in those clothes than the models.  I didn’t know she was so pretty.

    • funkycamper

Totally bored with the boring Ms. Stone. I say “risk the wrath! “

    • NCDFan

Hate the first two outfits but she looks good.

    • http://www.lifeinspice.com/ rose88

Let’s all give Emma Stone a big hand of applause!  Or at least let’s give her a hand, because if you look closely at picture of her in that silly Dries Von Noten getup, it appears she really needs one!

    • samitee

do you think when the spiderman promo-machine is done they’ll let her have red hair again?? love her, think she’s SO much cuter as a non-blonde.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She’s rocking the hell out of that (otherwise hideous) Dries Van Noten jacket!

What’s interesting to note is that I think that all of these outfits are rather ugly, but SHE makes them stand out.

      • Sue_Asponte

Agreed. These are some crazy, nutso clothes, and most I wouldn’t touch. But she makes them look great. That Dries van Noten jacket looks eccentric-in-a-bad-way on the model, but Willy Wonka awesome on Emma.

    • EEKstl

She is actually making these looks sing far better than the models.  Kudos.

    • jilly_d

omg luv. huh.  I think Ryan Gosling once said of her something like “Any man who tells you he wouldn’t give it all up for Emma Stone is lying.”  And I think he’s right about that, and half of straight women too, including me.

    • Michaela Tuckova

awww, why so much hate for the pantsuit and hat? It’s my favourite outfit of this set. Circus clown realness, y’all!

      • Lilak

Totally on board with the Van Noten jacket and trousers (though not crazy about the cap, or the expression on her face: Do Over!).

As for the rest: Of all the interesting, borderline wackadoo (if that’s their pleasure) high fashion garments out there, they had to pick this boring mess for such a hot commodity as Miss Stone?
One would say “mind-boggling” if one took Wintour & co. seriously – heh.

    • MilaXX

Okay the Dries Van Noten clown clothes are simply not working for me at all. Otherwise pretty “meh” editorial. Not bad, just not that good.

    • joe_tey83

All the dresses are so patchworky.

And the Jil Sander dress looks like it’s towels stitched together.

    • alwaysanswerc

Girl, Drag Pip is not your look.

    • cleep1000

The neon green with black lace overlay looks stunning on her. Everything else is just a’ight.  Her eyes in the cover shot look like they belong to someone else.

    • pugluv

I love the Versus dress and it looks fabulous on her!

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

what’s so fabulous?  Her hair looks AWFUL, the dresses are terrible, and her makeup looks unfinished. :(

    • ThaliaMenninger

The clothes are terrible, and she’s rocking ‘em all. You go, Emma Stone. You go.

    • unbornfawn

Really like the shot with the hat.

    • AuntieAnonny

What’s going on with her lips in the cover shot? Photoshop?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

LOVE her in the Versus. Everything else…it’s like they sucked out her personality.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Sorry but all of these clothes look like they were fashioned from someone’s collection of fat quarters….fug.

      • Qitkat

And here I was thinking that I could find a basic jacket or dress pattern and go crazy with my fat quarters!
        lol

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Love most of the dresses. Love the styling. Love Miss Emma. Hate the cover. Hate it. Will have to wrap this month’s in brown paper hate it. I don’t know what it is. the lipstick? the stare? the dress that looks like those fugly boiled wool jackets that old ladies wear? or maybe it’s Bichon Frise hide? ick.

    • clairellis

Is she naturally a blonde? I think I read that somewhere. She should be a red head, but that’s just me. This is a million times better than the red carpet looks we’ve seen recently.

    • TheOtherChristina

Girl, that is not your Dries Van Noten.

    • gloriana232

I kind of love the Dries Van Noten for its luxe absurdity … what, 1890s fop crossed with Chinese courtier? I dig it.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      Her eye makeup!

      I. DIE.

    • Beth G

RED HAIR.  I want her red hair back.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

These clothes look like stuff that would get huge praise on PR one day and then get the designer auf’ed the very next day.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      okay–
first: she looks so so much better in these items that it’s almost impossible to believe they are the same garments from runway to spiderman‘s starlet. wow.
second: oh my heavens peter copping is a terrible designer. bring back olivier, ricci, if you have any sense at all!
thridd: love the dries jacket but only as it’s been styled for the magazine. it leaves me dry on the runway. dry for dries–but i guess it isnt dries any more? or is that martin margiela who left the building? i always confuse them, apologies.
quatro: ibid re the versus as the dries. it’s so fabulous on her & such a wash on the runway.

      edited to add:
someone is having a deeply drunken argument in very loud spanish, including singing, directly below my window. got nothing to do w/ me but it’s making my sinuses just burn & quiver in a way even worse than they’d already been doing over the last two days.

    • aristida_girl

I wish she would stop with the blonde, I love her as  a redhead or brunette

    • ballerinawithagun

I want that Dies Van Noten jacket! That cover dress is horrible, wrinkly, droopy,  silk insets, yuck!  She looks fabulous!

    • lrhoff

She looks great….all of the different outfits work on her.

    • judybrowni

the first three outfits are horror shows — on the models. emma makes them work beautifully.

but i can’t wait for her return to darker hair, and/or her natural color.

    • quiltrx

Love the last two pics of her.

    • Candigirl1968

Someone has decided that messy, flyaway hair is going to be her “thing.”  Between that look with her red carpet looks and this editorial, it’s officially gotten old.

That having been said, she’s definitely working the camera.

    • Mexxoo

but…but… TLo – her hair’s a freakin’ mess!  What has she learned about that?  Nothing, I tell you!  NOTHING!!!  >.<

    • RzYoung

I love all the outfits apart from the stripy jacket photo – she looks like someone else there, it’s odd. She’s got a very changeable face -probably a great thing for an actress

    • Maddie_Faddenoid

The Nine Ricci dress is weird.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Love everything but the cover. Jil Sander Fall 2012 shoes and I were meant to be together. It’s written in the stars.

    • oohsparkley!

I think her eyes are mesmerizing in the cover shot.  The picture with that hat looks like someone else and a strange one at that.

    • Cat_In_A_Hat

Flesh toned satin is not her friend, as demonstrated on the cover.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i would so steal that rainbow stripe jacket in a hot minute.  the green pants too, but i’d have to have them altered to full length and fitted.  the chatreuse dress with black lace could be hot if it had two sleeves, although the color is not for everyone, i’m sure.
the cover shot doesn’t show the clothes to advantage, but on the model the coat looks pretty fab.  i wear a lot of coats and jackets, because even in the hot summer, it gets cold at night here in the high sierra.  so i could definitely use this one.  that color will definitely show the dirt, though.  maybe i could order it in a moss green.  that dress on the cover is hideous, though.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

p.s.  i’m playing paper dolls with my four-year-old granddaughter while posting, i accidentally deleted this whole post and had to write it again.  arrrrrgh…
