Dakota Fanning in Proenza Schouler

Posted on June 05, 2012

Someone has secretly replaced our normal Dakota Fanning with NEW Dakota Fanning, now with Flavor Crystals! Let’s see if anyone notices.

Dakota fanning attends the 2012 CFDA Fashion Awards in head-to-toe Proenza Schouler.

Proenza Schouler Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren

Okay, what? Now we’re kinda pissed. We’ve been grading this gal on a curve for years because we assumed she didn’t really know or care how to dress in a head-turning kind of way. It’s been washed-out ghostly schoolgirl looks for a good couple of years. And now we come to find out that Dakota can actually wear vibrant, head-turning, difficult-to-wear outfits when she wants to, which means everything we said about her, every judgment we rendered, is now in doubt. You have fooled us and schooled us, Miss D. Nicely done.

But from here on out we’re going to be much, much harder on you. Cue maniacal laughter.

Oh, also? We hate the shoes. So there.

  • uuuuuuggggghhhh my eyes! those shoes!

    • mshesterp

They are some of the ugliest, clod-hopper things I’ve seen on a person’s feet in a VERY long time.  And TLo have trotted out a bunch of celebs with ugly shoes.  The dress, however, looks super cute on her.

    • Clueless_Jock

Just wondering = what kind of shoes would go with this outfit?

    • Clueless_Jock

Just wondering = what kind of shoes would go with this outfit?

      • AmandaCathleen

Can’t go wrong with a strappy black sandal. You could also pick out any of the metallics in the dress.

      • Michelle Le

a nude patent heel would be nice.

    • I hate open toed hoof boots. They make the the any girl look like a foal learning to walk.

      • MoHub

         Foals are more graceful looking.

      • j_anson

A foal learning to walk seems like EXACTLY the kind of look that Dakota Fanning would go for, so… mission accomplished?

    • Candigirl1968

The dress is beyond amazing.  More of this please.  And the shoes make me want to scratch my eyes out.  No more of that please.

  • Horrid shoes – great everything else!

  • The shoes are terrible…something lighter (maybe with that geisha-y platform?) would have served her much better.  I like the color scheme on her, she looks great except for the shoes…

    • MilaXX

The dress is busy enough that a simple black pump would work here or even the heel Elizabeth Banks wore with that jumpsuit.

  • See baby girl? Look how much your eyes pop when you wear a nice contrasting colour. What an awkward shape to wear but she is seriously bringing it.

    • introspective

also how much your eyes pop when you have makeup on them?? she looks lovely. as everyone noted, the shoe misstep is cray, but the rest is so fab. hope she learns her lesson and keeps this new makeup artist.

      • It certainly explains why I always get told to wear bronze/copper tones on my eyes. I tend to ignore them, because it doesn’t fit with the rest of my aesthetic, but it definitely works!

  • formerlyAnon

    LOVE the dress. LOVE.

    Hate the shoes.

SHE somehow looks slightly overwhelmed by the outfit, which better shoes might correct.

  • I don’t like the shoes on their own, but I think they are perfect with the look.

    • I agree. I wouldn’t choose any of the individual pieces for myself but the overall look is pretty much perfect AND she’s pulling it off.

  • schadenfreudelicious

raffia hoof with a bonus big toe…gawd no…

    • In her defense, that’s the model’s toe.  I think she looks pretty faboo.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

The dress is so gorgeous!!  The shoes… So bad!!!

  • She still has the horrid center part and I despise the shoes, but she still manages to look fantastic!

  • Verascity

No ragging on the hair? It’s pretty awful.

    • charlotte

I guess a lot of us are giving her credit for not having the usual hairstyle.

      • It’s humorous because all she did was pull it back into a low ponytail lol

I do love this on her though, it’s young and it’s fun. She’s working it too, go Dakota!

  • thebanded

I was looking at the picture, thinking how amazing she looks… Then I scrolled down and saw the shoes. And went “Oh no!” Fugtastic shoes. But other than that, wow! She looks so grown up! Tear…

  • Wow- this is maybe the best she’s ever looked. I actually don’t even mind the shoes because she is working the hell out of that crazeballs dress.

  • In_Stitches

I like the shoes.  Pumps or sandals would be too boring for a dress like this and, sure, it’s a little obvious to match your sandal laces to the piping on your Asian inspired suit, but I’ll let her have the pass.

The hair is horrid though, no?

  • Deb

    Girl, that IS your dress.
    Now for those… uh… shoes…

  • nancylee61

It is amazing how brighter colors brighten her face, rather than wash it out!! I don’t think I have ever seen such a drastic example of this! I really do like her in these brighter colors!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Love the shoes! She looks great. And for some reason I even like the hair>Unlike the runway model’s Dakota’s looks purposeful, and works well with the busy, busy dress.

  • hate the shoes, but the dress and her make-up are fabulous!

  • kingderella

like the dress in theory, do not really like it on her here. i guess a less complicated dress in the same fabric, with the same silhouette, would have been perfect. and the shoes are AWFUL.

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you. I was going to say that I like the idea of the dress but the execution doesn’t quite work for her. To me it seems way too heavy. And yes those shoes are awful. Beyond awful.

  • jw_ny

She knows she looks good too…the face says it all.  Hope she keeps it up.

ps.  I rather like the shoes on her, with this dress…doubt I would on almost anyone else.

    • EditKitten

Agreed — they work for her here.

  • Judy_S

Beautiful. I just wish she didn’t have to stand in front of that stupid wall of ads. Aren’t there any shots of her in front of a yellow silk wall?

  • shopgirl716

I’ll take one of those dresses, please.  Gorgeous.  But the shoes are ugly.

  • Hate the shoes, and not a big fan of the hair here, but otherwise she looks gorgeous.  And I’m not sure that her makeup has ever looked better.

  • SusiePamudji

Hate the shoes too. Love the rest of the look. Where has this side of her been hiding?

  • EditKitten

    Best she’s ever looked.

  • Maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh, maniacal laugh…..

  • Judy_J

Dress is cute, but those peep-toe booties are ugly as sin.

  • lilibetp

Except for the shoes this is absolutely perfect.

  • ccinnc

    Wow. I covet that dress.

  •  I like the shoes on their own. Just not on anyone’s appendages.

  • Le_Sigh

Wow – that’s the best her face and clothes have looked!  I hardly recognized her.

  • Emily Giovanni

Wow, this looks really fabulous. Love the dress, hair, make-up. Do not love the shoes. Way too clunky paired with that dress. And the dress, while awesome, could be slightly improved by doing away with the random armpit tie.

  • The dress is admittedly striking, but it’s kind of crazy how low of a bar she has set for herself.  I actually looked at her here, and thought, “Wow, she did her hair and makeup!”  For once, her hair doesn’t look like it will break off, and she put a little foundation, powder and eye makeup on. Judging from this look, she clearly has potential, but there is just too little effort here to warrant much praise.

  • EEKstl

Don’t know if that is a dress or a coat but it is smashing either way.  I am both oddly attracted to, yet at the same time repulsed by, those shoes.  Not sure why I don’t flat-out hate them, but I don’t.  Either way she should have chosen differently.

  • SewingSiren

Absolutely beautiful. Positively perfect in every way.

  • fungstyle

shoes are completely hideous, but the dress and makeup look great. again with the shit hair. girl, get a hair dresser.

  • Lilithcat

Love the dress.  Would kill for it.

    Hate the shoes.

  • Love everything – but the hair! Why???!!

  • She duplicated the runway look right down to the shoes.  I don’t know how much credit she gets for this one outfit.  She may just have a new stylist.

  • ballerinawithagun

She is so pretty in color! Great ensemble, frightening shoes!

  • NurseEllen

What better place to announce you’ve emerged from your fashion chrysalis than the CFDA awards?  Bravo for the very successful metamorphosis!  But PS, I hate the shoes, too.  Ugly on their own AND they do nothing for the dress or the wearer.

  • nannypoo

This is a look that I would have never expected to see on her, and it’s fabulous. The shoes are definitely bad, but at least she was trying something different and she deserves points for that. She then loses those same points for simply wearing the same shoes as the model. Her hair, while boring, seems to work with the outfit, and her makeup is beautiful. I’d say this is a winner.

  • Those shoes are to diiiiiiie for. Seriously. I would kill for a pair. That is all.

  • BazoDee

Hate the hair, hate the shoes. Everything else is greatness!

  • BazoDee

Hate the hair, hate the shoes. Everything else is greatness!

  • hmariec19

From the ankles up, she looks FIERCE. The shoes offend.

  • hmariec19

From the ankles up, she looks FIERCE. The shoes offend.

  • MissAnnieRN

I don’t understand how people with talent and good taste could design something as hideous a those shoes. Good god! Cute dress honey. You need bolder make up with it.

  • Frank_821

The dress is chic and lovely. But the way they styled her hair, all I can think of is Marcia Brady

  • crash1212

LOVE the dress and she look superb in it. HATE the shoes and nobody would look good in them. That big toe just poking out there? Ew.

  • mjude

she is so cute but those shoes like they would be so damn hot let alone heavy

  • Lisa Dugan

Love the dress, love the shoes (they’re just weird enough to be fabulous) but don’t love the hair.  It’s so nice to see her in color and looking more her age.  She’s young but the twee stuff was too precious.

  • TheOriginalLulu

This dress is fabulous on her. Also, looks like somebody has paid a visit to the eyebrow waxer. Look how much more her eyes pop.
    I’m loving this new Dakota.

Agreed about the shoes, though. Holy crap, those are ugly.

  • Cathy S

Yes, exactly. She looks great, until you get to her feet. Those are some seriously fugly shoes. But that dress is fabulous on her.

  • quiltrx

Killer dress!  I’m proud of her. 🙂  Now she has to keep this up.

And honey?  Just because the designer put fug shoes with it on the runway does NOT mean you have to follow!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

    love every piece here.

  • deathandthestrawberry

The color looks a little autumnal for June (also the long sleeves), but I otherwise love it. Brava, darling.

    • janetjb

I agree and the dress is from the Fall 2012 collection.

Out of season dresses are one of my pet peeves, but along with shoes that don’t fit I’m going to try to ignore it best I can. Wish me luck!

  • janetjb

She looks very pretty.  Color is her friend!

  • Anathema_Device

I dig it, a lot. She looks like blood is actually pumping through her veins on its own accord.

That dress is all kinds of fierce. Don’t mind the shoes on their own, but they are too heavy for little miss thing here.

  • Whoever did her hair and make-up is a genius. It’s super fresh and it makes her face looks so gorgeous and glowy, without making her look 10 years older.

  • MilaXX

Love the dress, but the hair is still tragic and the she shouldn’t have copied the runway shoes.

  • lrhoff

Those shoes are disgusting.  They barely work on the model, but she has stick-thin legs and is 10 feet tall…..

  • With that makeup? She looks like she could pass for Diane Krueger’s younger sister. Well played, for a change.

  • Good for you, TLo. Stand up to those celebs!

  • uprightcitizen

Hate her hair, but the dress actually looks way better on Dakota than on the model … where it almost looks like maternity wear. Those colors and that shape are perfect for Fanning. She doesn’t look like an albino waif!

  • kimmeister

It’s amazing what a little eyeliner will do!

  • Shoes are awful, but gosh, from north of the ankles, she looks stunning ! So pretty !

  • LUV that dress! Hate the shoes just as much! And also hate that with the exception of the hair, she copied the runway look. I can forgive the last part because she hasn’t quite had a clue before this… But still, those shoes are an eyesore. It is a huge step forward for her, even so. Way to go Dakota! Dress selection, check. Now to the finishing touches.

  • Love the dress.  Hate the shoes.

  • sk8tfan

Love love love the dress. The vixen. Shoes are basically dyed surgical boots.

  • sashaychante

What is up with the workout hair?  Those shoes really are a visual assault.

  • TieDye64

I adore this dress on her. Lovely rich COLORS and she doesn’t look washed out. But, those clodhoppers are retina burningly ugly.

  • MzzPants

Hmmm…maybe a gay is on the payroll now.  She looks great.

  • rumcg66

I love the dress, but not for June. What is with everyone wearing heavy-looking clothes as we head into summer??

And yeah, those shoes are an abomination.

  • Lina_bee

Ooh! Dakota, you surprise us!!  (Keep doing that!)  I don’t mind the hair but the makeup seems not quite right?  The dress is awesome, if heavy as hell for summer (granted, at the CFDAs, season doesn’t COUNT).  It will be great to see where she goes with the golds and blacks — I’ve been wailing about her not having the complexion to wear silver for years, so I’m delighted with this. Yay her!

  • I like the shoes but hate the hair. I covet the dress.

  • LuisaNL

those are some seriously ugly shoes. otherwise she looks great. LOVE the make up, she is alsolutely glowing.

  • LuisaNL

those are some seriously ugly shoes. otherwise she looks great. LOVE the make up, she is alsolutely glowing.

  • They’re like corrective orthopedic boots for deformed feet. With bows.
    Cute dress though!

  • They’re like corrective orthopedic boots for deformed feet. With bows.
    Cute dress though!

  • AWS

It’s Chloe Sevigney and Elton John’s love child…

  • From the knees up, this is glorious. Ironically, that’s what my husband says to me all the time.

  • Shoes are bad. Hair is worse. Dress is awesome.

  • SapphoPoet

LOVE the dress. The less said about those shoes, the better.

  • Allison Woods

Love the dress. Like all the rest of humanity, hate the shoes.

  • giiiirrrr

The dress is divine, not sure what the hate is for the shoes.  This is a WERQ for me.

  • TSkot

I actually think the shoes are pretty cool; especially with that outfit.

  • Gorgeous dress.  Godzilla shoes.  Thud, thud, CRUNCH!

  • Lisa_Cop

The shoes, hair color, age – Dakota looks almost exactly like the model. Well done ( though the shoes are awful) !

  • Lilak

Just fine, except for the shoes … which only work on longer, shapelier legs than either Fanning possesses.
And my, how her pale metallic yellow hair matches the pale metallic yellow in the dress.

  • Sara__B

Fabulous dress. Awful shoes and hair. She still has a way to go, but she’s learning…

  • alwaysanswerc

Shoes are bizarre, but from the knees up she’s divine!

  • NCDFan

These huge shoes seem to be the new ‘thing’. Shoes that go up to the ankle aren’t a bad idea, but in black they seem to be uniformly hideous.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Yeah, I hate the shoes, too, but otherwise, she looks ADORABLE!  I’m thinking she must have gotten a new stylist.  She looks great in color!  Her makeup is so much better than before.  I’m not crazy about the hair, but it isn’t offensive, just boring.  But that is one cute look!

  • Oh dear.  Previously I had suggested that we burn all nude pumps, but looking at those horrid foot covers of Ms. Fanning’s makes me realize that my bonfire needs to be MUCH bigger…

  • turtleemily

I don’t hate the shoes so much as think you need to be taller to wear them with that dress (as in with the model) since Dakota is losing a lot of leg between the shoes and the hemline falling where it is.

  • Aarjullor

Love the dress, hate that sad black bow tying it together. I actually gasped when I saw the shoes, ew. She’s such a pretty girl, it’s amazing what a little makeup can do.

  • Sue_Asponte

Oh wow, I love the shoes. They are FIERCE! Love it head to toe. Great colors, great look.

  • guest2visits

    Wow,… she’s wearing this beautifully. And the hair looks right, even a little splash of makeup. I hate the shoes too;
but it’s so nice to see her in something that fits well, and looks like her style.  She even seems pleased instead of anxious.
    Yeah Dakota !

  • Mariah J

I love everything about this. I’ve been waiting SO LONG for her to dress like this.

  • Sophie Collier

The shoes are awful but they WORK with this Japanese look.  They do!  Honest!  So there!

  • But the dress is so good, I can forgive the shoes. Anyway, they kind of work with this outfit. I’m a little sad about her hair, but have I mentioned that I LOVE THAT DRESS?

  • Qitkat

    Flasher overcoat shoes! Disturbing.

That is so NOT her dress. Apparently I’m in the minority, but I really don’t think it suits her, and I actually do like the dress. Belongs on someone edgier, like Rooney Mara.

  • librarygrrl64

    Those shoes are an abomination.

  • oohsparkley!

Love the print and hate the shoes.

  • Melissa Brogan

    Visceral hate on the shoes.

But damn, girl can actually wear some clothes.

  • Vainte

She’s heading in the right direction at least, excluding shoes. Kind of like the hair, would love to see her get more adventurous with it. Maybe like her Wonderland shoot?

  • Sweet_Fashionista

    I think we’ve found our Anastasia Steele…..

  • mbelchic

    Great look, gruesome shoes-

  • all i can say is she is just beautiful……doesn’t matter what she wears or how her hair is she is the best and i can’t say that enough….hell i just wish i were young and rich so i could meet her…..she’s the best thing going today…keep up the good work dakota fanning…..you’re the perfect rolemodel for all the young girls……i just can’t say it enough YOU ARE THE BEST ACTRESS GOING TODAY….if you don’t agree then you’re all wrong just watch her she’s perfect
