Charlize Theron in Christian Dior Couture

Posted on June 01, 2012

The very best thing about Charlize is that she can go back and forth between the persona of a cool chick (who seems like she’d be fun, just in her sweats, on a couch, with a bag of cheese curls on her lap, a wineglass in her hand, and a shitty movie on the TV) and a devastatingly, glacially sexy ice princess in the Hitchcock mold. And while we get that little gay tingle every time she works the latter persona effortlessly, we’re not really feeling this one:

Charlize Theron attends UK premiere of “Prometheus” in a Christian Dior couture dress paired with Christian Dior sandals and Bulgary jewelry.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Collection

Is that kind of a hot dress? Yes. Is Charlize also hotter than a Southern Baptist church in August? Oh, yes. But this feels a little half-assed. It’s true that Charlize could look devastating with a blowout, some makeup, and any old dress that showed off her figure, but we find ourselves looking at this and trying to figure out what’s missing. She could’ve used some bigger earrings and maybe a necklace. She could’ve also used an entire skirt, instead of the 3/5 of a skirt she’s sporting. She’s gorgeous, and this isn’t exactly a terrible look, but we’re not really feeling it.

But Char? We are ready and waiting for our couch invite.

She does rather look like she left the house before she was completely dressed and accessorized.

      • http://nowtweet.it/2kbq Carla C. Eich

rather than finishing out with grace, as it ought...CNNMoney7.notlong.Com

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

It does feeling unfinished.  Now if this had been a full length dress, yeowch! what a great look it would be.  Statement jewelry is whats needed here.  And perhaps the hair in a french twist.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZFKRECRF5BOBWB4RXAJGI4D6KA mmc

Yes!  As I was scrolling down, I was expecting a long gown.  Then….doh!  It’s not working at that length.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I see what the intent was; fading the beading out into transparency at the hem.   But at the cocktail length, it seems to sputter to a halt, rather than finishing out with grace, as it ought.

        • Little_Olive

I hope this does not mean that as she approaches an age that in Hollywood only exists in horror stories she will go into Halle Berry “I’m hot and I know it” territory.

          Stay true, Char!

    • suzanne77

It just looks a little half done. I mean that dress is dangerously close to being a glittery bath towel. I do like her make up because it looks soft and pretty, but the dress just seems like a spangly after thought.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

My exact thought re: the bath towel.

        • http://profiles.google.com/kwugirl Katherine Wu

Totally, I thought the last bit of TLo commentary was going to be “wrap it up and send it over to Aniston.”

      • twocee

Agree completely on the bath towel.  She pulled an Aniston :-)

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

Yep! That’s the reaction I had.

      • Diane_G

Yes, and the blue carpet doesn’t really help with that effect.

    • http://twitter.com/predecessors Rina

The dress looks like an extraordinarily pricey bath towel.

    • RedRaven617

That second photo… does it look to anyone else like there is a barely visible baby bump?

      • justsayhellno

yes! and that’s what’s wrong with it — it makes her look like very thick

      • Melissa Brogan

Not really. It looks like her body is slightly twisted left as she’s walking around.

    • J D

I don’t know, I feel like for a summer blockbuster movie premier, you don’t really need a full length gown.  She looks gorgeous enough as it is, save the full velocity gowns for awards season.

    • EEKstl

The styling’s fine – it’s the dress’s fault.  The top part is fine, but it “ombres” down to a thin, wispy fabric and it’s too wispy and narrow for that slit.  The lower half of the dress just stops working.

      • Rrroza

        Very well analyzed and articulated!

    • ccinnc

Her face is amazing. And I give major props for being able to stride in those shoes. Like the dress but wish it were long.

    • GorgeousThings

She looks as though she’s not feeling it, either, especially in that first picture.
I can’t WAIT to see Prometheus!

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

Yeah, I feel like this is a scroll-down-fug lite. If that dress was a full gown, she’d be getting an A++. As it is, she just looks pretty, and ready to go to the club.

      • RebeccaKW

Yes!  This is like a dress you see girls buying at the Body Shop on Friday afternoon to wear out that night.  Nothing really WRONG with it, but it’s not red-carpet worthy.

    • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

In. She looks great and pulls off a tricky dress.

    • Andrea Rossillon

It’s a Heidi dress. Which means it’s FINE, but Charlize has demonstrated, I feel, a greater sophistication on the red carpet than Heidi– I think that’s contributing to the underdone feeling. It’s too casual, almost.

    • http://twitter.com/hdl_b Heather Barkman

Meh. Definitely not her best. The fading glittery skirt just seems to disappear in an entirely unflattering way

    • Lilak

Not feeling the dress, but I sure am feeling HER . . . The dress may be half-assed, but you can’t say she hasn’t made an effort with all the rest of her look.
Seriously, unless a garment she’s wearing totally blows, who cares? when she looks that (no other word for it) sublime.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dorothymichael Dorothy & Michael n/a

It’s borderline fancy schmancy bathing suit cover up, like she’s in Vegas and headed to the pool on the roof of some hotel but just wants to look good on the way there.

      • carolynmo

        Exactly!

    • schadenfreudelicious

the color is stunning, as others have stated it would have been so much better as a gown…i will give her props however for having the bodice of her dress fitted properly, so refreshing to see a strapless dress sitting where it should instead of sliding half-way down her boobs as we see so often on the red carpet….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

My first though when I saw this dress on her was how dramatic it would have looked if it were just a bit longer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Her makeup is perfect and she looks better than I could after a week of coiffing. That said, she can do better.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It is a little Ice Princess, isn’t it? I love the dress, but it needs something around the neck. A necklace or something interesting with the neckline would have bumped this up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

With a full skirt, wouldn’t it just be an Anniston bath towel dress though?

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

That is a great color for her, and I think her hair and face look fantastic. I don’t like the wonky hem on that dress, but I think that’s my only complaint about this look. She looks soft and beautiful.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I agree with you TLo, it is half assed, as is the dress.  I really thought it was going to be a floor length gown with a huge slit…it turned into scroll down fug when it was a short dress, with a huge slit and sheer at the bottom.

    • Lina_bee

Oh, Dior, no. This is nothing more than a sparkly bath towel! And it isn’t even flattering on a woman who makes *everything* seem flattering. For shame!

    • http://twitter.com/themeadtree E Storm

I like the idea of it especially from the waist up but after that it all looks blah (those shoes, eck!) plus it matches the carpet.

    • Jellybish

I think it’s 90% her posture that’s throwing this off.

      • http://twitter.com/crush_onyou crush on you

This. She looks like she wants to pee. That dress is gorgeous and the color looks great on her. It could be better if it was longer or maybe wider at the bottom, but I’m not sure of that. Makeup and hair are soft and beautiful too. It’s her posture.

    • Dhammadina

She looks especially fantastic from the back but that dress material isn’t doing her any favors, as great as the color is on her. The dress is clingy while also being bunchy and bath towel-y.

    • http://www.facebook.com/baby98 Elizabeth Todd

I love the color and fabric…I think it is the slit that throws the look off, or maybe it is gaping weirdly because it is not heavy enough to lay flat with motion…She is an amazingly beautiful woman, she has charisma in spades.

    • janetjb

The color is pretty on her, plus her hair and makeup are soft and pretty.

I don’t know why it doesn’t work, but it doesn’t.

    • Judy_S

Agree that more jewelry would have been nice, but she looks beautiful. The starry dress is appropriate for Prometheus, isn’t it?

What’s with this UK premiere thing, here and with Avengers? It’s like Gilbert and Sullivan having to have their works produced simultaneously on both sides of the Pond to affirm copyright. I know my son is planning to be first in line for Prometheus when it opens in NYC.

    • Libby Rhoman

Ye olde sequined bath towel.  Somehow it makes her look like she’s slouching.  Out.

    • MissMariRose

It looks kinda cheap. That saddens me because j’adore Charlize.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/PKI5RTEEJ5TZIZII6VEN2G3D7A Caitlin

      TLo, ya’ll are crazy today.

    • egl48

Perfect for Prometheus.  It looks like the midnight sky.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

The shoe model’s foot looks scuzzy.

      • granddelusion

Well, look at what that shoe is forcing it to do. Feet weren’t meant to stand liked that.

      • 1blogless

I was thinking the same thing! Is that a shoe model or someone they lifted from the morgue? What a hot mess.

    • AlinaValero

thigh high slits don’t really work on thigh length skirts. it looks like she lunged and tore a seam. I think this would be amazing if it were floor length. also, maybe with a necklace or some bad-ass earrings would take it up a notch.

      • poggi

I should have read your entry first.  I totally agree.

    • butterflysunita

I think she looks gorgeous.  Looks like she’s going for effortless simplicity, and it’s working for her.

    • lonepear

This looks like a high school homecoming dance dress: sparkly and short and meant to appeal to someone whose taste isn’t fully developed yet. Charlize should have left this one back in the juniors’ department.

    • Kristy Evans

Honestly, if you cover her face and pretend she’s WAY more tan, this could be Jennifer Aniston. Char – don’t copy Jen’s style.

    • Lisa Dugan

It’s very pretty and the shoes are great but it’s just missing something.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

My main take away from this is that foot model of the Dior shoe should not have been a foot model.

(Okay, and Charlize looks gorgeous, but she’s done better.)

    • Eclectic Mayhem

With you on the frock.  Her make-up looks fabulous though, she really is a stunner.

    • quiltrx

I’m with the others who said this would have been terrific as a gown.  As it is, it’s got the beaded bath towel look.

And someone should have told her about the huge self-tanner stain on the back of her ankle.

    • Anathema_Device

I, for one, will be chuckling over the phrase “that little gay tingle” all day. It is going to be a new criterion for clothes and shoes when I am shopping. Thank you, once again, for adding a little gay tingle to my vocabulary.

The dress? So much “meh” for so much sparkle on such a beauty.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I like the easy breeziness of it, but I have never been a fan of the strapless “sparkly bath towel” dresses. Not a fan of the way they crush the boobage and hide a girl’s curves. Not a fan of the way women automatically hunch their shoulders when wearing one, as if they’re afraid that if they stand up straight, their boobs will pop out the top. So it’s just okay to me.

The good news is, she’s Charlize and we can all just suck it.

    • poggi

I think the effect on the skirt would have been more dramatic as a gown.  In this length, it just not that striking.  I agree that bigger earrings would help.  Also this is just too easy for someone with her fashion credentials.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Definitely needs a necklace, but I still thinks she looks fresh and pretty.

On a side note, I don’t think they should have bothered photographing that shoe on the runway if the model couldn’t keep her foot in the right place in it. Her big toe hanging off while she’s got an extra inch at the back to slide her heel back just ruins what is otherwise a pretty kickass shoe.

    • http://twitter.com/GuidosDaddy Jason M. Galloway

Lookout Nomi Malone cuz this is a GODDESS! She can do no wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

Blue version of Aniston’s sparkly bath towel. Shoes are fabulous but don’t go.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

You are Charlize Fucking Theron. NO reason to be channeling Jennifer Aniston.

    • AthenaJ

Be nice, guys! Obviously what happened is some crazy person with a pair of scissors snuck up behind Charlize and cut off the bottom of what had been a gorgeous full-length gown. But Charlize, ever the professional, somehow manages to rise above such an unfortuante event and carry on. Brava!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

She’s wearing the tasteful, red carpet version of Miss Texas USA’s evening gown at Miss USA – http://www.pageantupdate.info/missusa2012/pageant/images/prelimgown/tx.jpg.

    • VicksieDo

I must disagree. That is one amazing look, head to toe!!!!

    • KateMaryC

Considering she has one of the best bodies in Hollywood, it makes her look like a box from both the front and the sides. And she, my friends, is not a box.

    • Snailstsichr

On my first glance, I thought, “Shouldn’t this be a long gown?” Then I scrolled down and read the comments and – wow – I feel like one of the cool kids! Part of the Great T Lo Mind hive, as it were.

    • Sophie Collier

All of the focus is on the dress, which is the problem.  Without jewelry or more dramatic makeup, she’s sort of fading behind the deep color and sparkle of the dress.  I would have suggested a smokier eye or some earrings to add some balance to the rest.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

I thought this was a full-length dress at first – such a disappointing scrolldown!

    • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I don’t know, I have to give it to her.  She looks that good with a near-infant in the house..

      • girliecue

I know, right? She’s the walking, talking definition of unflappable.

    • amywinns

Christian Dior should immediately cease and desist with using that product shot for this shoe and sub in this action shot of the Charlize stride. The woebegotten runway model’s pain is radiating right off the screen, while kicky Charlize is like “how d’you like my custom-fitted foot couture, y’all??”

    • MilaXX

Yeah, no. That dress doesn’t work on her. She loses her waistline and the shoes don’t really compliment the dress either. I’m not sure if better accessories would help. I just think that’s not her dress.

    • afabulous50

Sorry – I think she looks spectacular.

    • lesmaha

      It’s a bath towel, but I LOVE the color…!

    • girliecue

She needs to be dripping in jewelry. Geezo Pete ladystars, what about Dripping In Jewels don’t you get??? Also, even though she’s glammed up on the RC, in her head she seems to on her couch, in sweats and a ponytail, lounging with T Lo. Look at her gorgeous face. Doesn’t she look like she’s thinking, “Mmm… Cheetos… pass the bag why doncha, boys.”

And Dior, really? You couldn’t find a foot model without stained and injured feet??? I just got a pedi. Call me…

    • Jessi03

      I want those shoes!

    • patticake1601

She’s pretty, blond and an actress. So hard to find…yawn.

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/toodleskitty79?feature=guide AWS

      Fierce shoes!

But yeah, she looks washed out because she’s not wearing enough make-up and the hair is so light.  The dress needs a necklace and actually does NOT flatter.  Too big.  No waist, no hips.

      Hips don’t lie people!

    • MoHub

As others have noted: sparkly bath towel

    • alyce1213

I love it, feeling it head to toe.  (Doesn’t look like a bath towel to me.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I like it, but she needed a cuff or something.

    • RL McGruder

I agree with several other commenters – I don’t care for the length or the sheerness at the bottom.  It just seems undercooked. Great navy, though.

I also think the shoes, as high as they are, put out a matronly vibe that kills this whole thing for me.

    • Susan Crawford

That is one fabulous dress! I love the color, the cut, the sparkle and the hints of sheerness, and se ROCKS it. I would have gone for a more polished hairstyle – a bit fuller, with soft, Lauren Bacall waves, and a pair of wide, multi-color pave sapphire cuffs. And maybe the same shoe in an icy silver. But this woman is in my top ten if she showed up wearing a chenille bathrobe and fuzzy slippers. A classy dame, that one!

    • jennifervney

The dress is oddly shapeless and a cool necklace would’ve been killa. Hair and make up look good though, and I love the shoes!

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That is an unflattering dress.  And, unfortunately, looks a little too much like a local kindergarten class went nuts with the blue glitter.

    • PastryGoddess

I’m going with Pulling a Jolie for this one.  This is a really half assed look from her

    • donkeygospel6

So let me get this straight. Charlize Theron gets a “meh” on the same day Kristen fucking Stewart gets a “werq?”

      • Sara__B

Probably because Kristen F. Stewart is finally getting it right, while Charlize genetically gifted Theron is relying on her looks and hardly putting in any effort at all.

        • donkeygospel6

Yeah, but I don’t like A for Effort.

    • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

I think the dress is way boring and it’s only Charlize’s hotness that’s tipping it over into the “under consideration” category. This is a dress Emily Rossum or one of the people from Glee should wear.

    • Sara__B

Not feeling it either. A tad too effortless.

    • j_anson

Ice dancer. Also, Christian Dior needs to hire better foot models.

    • guest2visits

A really beautiful short dress that needed to be a gown.  As is; it seems out of balance, top heavy.
A more diminutive celeb; like Eva L., might rock the short one.

    • PaulaBerman

Her feet look like they HURT. A lot. Time for a pedi and deep tissue massage, then a weekend on the couch with her feet up.

      • Lilithcat

Actually, her feet look better than the model’s.

        • PaulaBerman

You’re right, those are the model’s feet. Not sure why I thought they were Charlize’s. That poor model. Ugh.

    • http://twitter.com/Mylynka Mylynka

It is totally the length that makes this a Meh and by the look on her face she knows it.

    • tallgirl1204

sparkly bath towel.  I would expect to see Jen Aniston in this.

    • DaveUWSNYC

      Scrolldown letdown…lovely color though!

    • filmcricket

What you can’t see in these photos is that this dress is actually pretty sheer all the way up. There’s a picture out there of her with more light behind her and it looks even more like a beach cover-up – you can see her body suit underneath it. Now, granted, if anyone was going to work the granny-panty body suit it would be Charlize, but I still expect better from her. (Love the colour and the sparkly, though; agree it would be better as a gown.)

    • pawtley

See Young Adult for the couch persona in her character Mavis, but sub in Ken-Taco-Hut, whiskey and shitty reality TV.

    • Monabel

      It’s the skirt.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=517890557 Willis Cramer Kliefoth

I think she looks gorgeous- comfortable and cool, appropriate for the occasion, and letting her striking natural beauty do the heavy lifting- as it should. That color is gorgeous on her and she looks like herself, which is the most important thing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martha-Hicks-Leta/1059884884 Martha Hicks Leta

I am SO down with this look as a big EFF YOU to the painful, stuffed-into-a-sausage-casing look that we see on virtually every other woman out there who has enough money to pay a stylist to make them look “glamorous.” Why can’t glamour be simple when you’re as beautiful as this? Looks like she threw on a thong, some shoes and that dress and trotted right out the door. Love this for the same reason I loved Sharon Stone in that Gap turtle neck she wore to the Oscars way back when. It’s simple, sane and confident.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

My girl crush remains.  I think she looks beautiful – love the shoes and the bracelet, and hair and makeup are flawless.  The dress is pretty, and a good color on her.  Could have used a necklace, but otherwise she’s perfection.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I should look so half-assed.  She could use either bigger earrings or a necklace but she looks AWESOME!

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

She’s kinda pulling an Aniston…albeit a Sparkly Aniston.

    • http://twitter.com/TwiterlessTerri Terri

I think of this as an outfit for the straight boys.  She looks gorgeous in it, but also like the only thing keeping it on her is her will.  That’s got a certain sex appeal.

    • msdamselfly

The effect of the dress against the blue carpet is stunning–like a mermaid and appropriate for the film’s title.

However, the center part in her hair is throwing the whole look off.

    • rumcg66

Jewelry. I really think that’s all she needs.

    • suzq

You realize, people, that this would be a thunderous “IN!” had Jennifer Aniston worn this dress.

We’re nitpicking.  She looks spectacular, but Jen should get the Dior folks on the horn, stat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22917995 Nicole Renee

It’s the the fit, its doing her figure no favors. I love her ballerina feet with those beautiful arches!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      She’s pulling a Jolie.

    • http://oneblueberry.com/ LaVonne Ellis

Crap. Even her feet are beautiful. Life is so unfair.

    • http://twitter.com/yessveee Sarah Veenstra

      Pulling an Aniston.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

That’s some serious leg, AND some serious face she’s giving. It’s a tad awkward, that dress, but I love her overall look. She looks stunning.

    • Arakne86

Those shoes look like torture instruments. Ouch.

    • Tom Sprick

There is something about that skirt that just doesn’t look quite right on her.  But still looks way better than it would on me so…. :)

    • Candice Richardson

It’s because this is Jennifer Aniston’s dress and hair.

    • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Ugh, hate the dress, HATE THE ROOOOOOOTS, but LOVE the shoes.  Love.  The Shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/LilyStoicheff Lily Stoicheff

I feel like every photo I see of a shoe from the 2012 collections is on a foot that looks horribly abused and in SO MUCH PAIN, like they took the photos at the end of the season on a model that had walked a couple dozen shows.

    • LeoBloke

The shoe model could use a little body make-up and fresh nail polish, as well as a properly fitted shoe. I think our Charlize looks stunning…nice to see clean and unaccentuated once in a while. Proud of a fellow South African!

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

Dior’s foot models have been BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD all around this year.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ONL37CZFCJ24LZLHIQ6C4BOLTE Liz

Something about this looks dated to me. Looks like a really expensive version of the dress I wore to 9th grade semi-formal in 1998.

    • http://twitter.com/Lola99959 Veronika Kaufmann

disagree. Nothing is missing. She looks fabulous and has us looking for a brown paper bag to put over our heads forever.
