Ashley Greene for DKNY Fall 2012 Ad Campaign

Posted on June 29, 2012

We always see Ashley at the DKNY and Donna Karan runway shows during Fashion Week and we’re struck by two things each time:

  1. Her jaw-dropping beauty, which believe it or not, doesn’t translate to pictures, and
  2. How much she embodies the DKNY woman; all urban chic and strong walk.

So it’s not a surprise to us that she’s the face of the DKNY fall campaign and it’s even less of a surprise to us that she looks amazing in every single picture.

DKNY Fall 2012 ad campaign featuring Ashley Greene and Johannes Huebl photographed by Peter Lindbergh in New York City.

So many womenswear campaigns revolve around some sort of romantic fantasy, but the DKNY brand is all about the self-assured woman and you can see that in every picture here. There’s no knock-knee’d “I’m just a girl” posing here. She’s a woman with places to go and people to see. Notice how when she’s posing with a man, he doesn’t just have his arm around her, shepherding her around like she doesn’t know where to go. She’s got her arm around him as well. It’s a subtle thing, but it really stands out because fashion imagery doesn’t always portray that kind of self-assuredness in women.

Pretty clothes and nice styling, but must she suffer from the Jessica Simpson open-mouthed-dull-eyed syndrome in every single shot?

    • lordandtaylor

Last photo: her gentleman friend also looks like he is a fish out of water gasping for air. I will practice this look and use it all weekend. Bet it requires a lot of chapstick to keep the lips moist.

    • meowing

I’m assuming there’s some model disease which impairs the ability to close one’s mouth.  Must make swallowing a bitch, which may explain why models are so thin.

    • PeggyOC

Just what I was going to say.  Same face in every picture.  That’s not how you WERQ it girlie.

    • afabulous50

I so agree!!  Why is it that every model is open-mouthed lately??  Either smile – or shut it..:-)  But, I do love the styling and the clothes themselves.  She is a beauty.

    • gabbilevy

This is a campaign, so these shots probably won’t show up next to each other. Not that it excuses a lack of creativity. Then again, I don’t want to breathe in through my nose in NYC, either.

    • AnaRoW

That’s probably why her beauty doesn’t translate to pictures because she doesn’t have any facial expressions in them.

    • call_me_schmeg

      to recap: OPEN MOUTH!

    • unbornfawn

Exactly what I thought when I looked through these pictures. She is giving lousy face.

      • I have no idea what all you people are referring too about her mouth. Anyone here would be lucky to be that gorgeous.

        • TieDye64

I’m with you GT. If only!

          • Lisa

Make it a triple!  Stunning!  It would be nice to see her get more fashion work now that she’s done with all this “Twilight” junk, because she really is gorgeous.

    • Amy Ellinger

By the third pic, I was yelling “Smile, dammit!” at the screen.  A full on natural laugh would have been even better!

    • formerlyAnon

Probably the choice of whatever team chooses/approves the photos & the look of the campaign – granted they can only work with what she gives them, but hundreds of photos were probably taken & there had to have been good ones with her mouth closed, had they wanted that.

  • Kayceed

DK is such a smart cookie. She really gets the idea that women want to look good, but not necessarily decorative.

  • Love it and DKNY, but just wish that she showed something other than the same exact face in each pic. It’s a minor quibble, though.

  • I wish DKNY had as much of a clear direction for their menswear. I tend to like some pieces, but DK really knows the women she dresses inside out, and the menswear seems like a bit of an afterthought at times.

  • Lisa Dugan

She looks gorgeous and NYC fabulous.  Love your point about the pic with the man.  Very true!

  • lordandtaylor

Pretty clothes. She is the “IT” girl right now. You know, the Susan Dey of 2012.

    • Lilak

Uh-huh, she’s got that upper lip going on.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Interesting comparison. I would never have thought of it, as Susan was the sunshiney California girl type (even though she’s not from California) and here we have Ashley doing the New York thing to a T, but I see it.

    • formerlyAnon

Yes, I didn’t think of it, but she has the same air of “I’m living the life you want” that Susan Dey had for those of us of a certain age in our early adolescence.

  • janetjb

    Gorgeous photos.

  • Alisa Rivera

Love the last shot and agree that it’s refreshing to see a model who isn’t knock-kneed, frail or looks like she’s 14. I do wish she’d closed her mouth in at least one shot.

    • greyhoundgirl

I had the same thought about her mouth.  It’s all the more noticeable because there are a lot of photos.  But she does wear the clothes beautifully and with strength.

    • formerlyAnon

Probably the choice of whatever team chooses/approves the photos & the look of the campaign -hundreds of photos were probably taken & there had to have been at least a couple of good ones with her mouth closed, had they wanted that.

  • deathandthestrawberry

    Love those flared skirts. Want.

  • crash1212

I pretty much covet everything in this collection, save the sheer skirted thing – which I HATE even in DKNY. Excellent showcase and fabulous choice in Ashley to show it off. I’m a big fan of fit-and-flare skits and dresses….so kicky and fun to wear.

  • schadenfreudelicious

great clothes, she looks amazing in everything…now if we could only get her to vary that expression, even slightly…..

  • Lina_bee

Best she’s ever looked, and I still love this collection to pieces.

  • First Zoe Saldana, now Ashley Greene – how are these girls making sheer crotch curtains look so good?  There is no power on earth that should be making short, stubby-legged, redheaded me want something that’ll look like my knees are in mourning, but damn!

    • lovelyivy

It’s the challenge with loving pretty clothes- it’s sad to see something beautiful and know it just wouldn’t suit or flatter your looks. As a busty short lady, I deal with this heartbreak every time I see something with spaghetti straps…

  • lonedroid

For someone with no professional modeling experience, she’s done an impressive. I WANT everything portrayed here, and I’ve never been big on DKNY. If that doesn’t spell success, I don’t know what does!

    • First Last

Me too! I want it all.

  • Hermione_Granger

I want every one of those handbags.

  • marilyn

She is beautiful, and the clothes are great.  However, does she need to shove an oversized purse in our face in almost every shot?  What is DKNY selling anyway?   Because the clothes are great and the purses are not that interesting.  They are big, they have her logo, and that’s about it.  They are just big rounded-corner rectangles in leather, and are pretty unremarkable.  With this set up, DKNY should be focusing on the clothes, and not the uninteresting bags.

    • MilaXX

I guess if you dislike oversized bags they don’t work for you, not to mntion in the last 3 shots she’s carrying smaller bags & clutches. However in my life I can honestly think of occasions for each bag shown. I’m pretty sure the DKNY ad is selling the DKNY brand as a whole; bags, clothes & probably jewelry as well.

  • SpcilK

Nice collection, great tayloring and styling. She is very beautiful.

  • AlexisPayne

Love this, I want to be her and wear those clothes….. So DKNY should know the ads work!

    • TieDye64

      Amen, sister!

  • TheOriginalLulu

So fabulous. She certainly has that look.
I love how you guys always point out subtle details that I would have overlooked, but that make so much sense when I go back for a second look.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

This is the first ad campaign post in a while where I’ve thought — “Hey, where could I buy those clothes?”

    • Isadora Paiva

Same thing here. And specially noticeable, I’m the rare kitten who doesn’t really care about bags, so I’m usually pretty “meh” about the bag posts. But some of these gave me a major case of WANT!

  • Saucysusan

I LOVE this ad campaign & these clothes. I miss NYC! Awesome place to stylewatch.

  • I was going to say, she looks like a strong, professional, busy, and stylish lady on the street. I need this type of fashion, because I am not lounging around ornate mansions looking wistful all the time. I am usually running around the city for work and pleasure, and its nice to see this! She looks like a badass.

  • Jessi03

    Bless.  Thank you, Donna Karen.

  • Introspective

This campaign is aspirational and yet relatable all at once. I see shades of my life now as a busy NYC woman and also inklings of what I want my life to be if i had a bit more bucks and free time.

    Coveting the purple dress too.

In all I love this. Open mouth shots and all.

  • MilaXX

These are some of the best pictures of hers I’ve ever seen. As an ad I like pretty much every shot. The bags works, the clothes work, everything here works and appeals to me.

  • Qitkat

I love these urban chic clothes so much, but I do wish the stills had caught some of her other expressions which we see in the video, fleeting that they were, especially her smile.

  • iCouture

Ashley is very much the up to the minute, independent NYC woman, and she is gorgeous!!!
DKNY is her to a T, and what a perfect match.  She is an actress, so I don’t expect her to be a “perfect”model, but she does the job!

  • I love DNKY. So chic without being exhausting.

  • boomchicabowwow

If I could somehow swing it that I would get free clothes for life if I only ever wore ONE designer, I would do it in a heartbeat for Donna Karen/DKNY.  I always want to wear every piece, and I always actually have somewhere TO where every piece.  Luv huh!

  • AthenaJ

Thank you TLo, for explaining exactly why I love these!! No vapid, half starved prepubescent waifs here. Very ‘outta my way, bitches!’ but in a chic and classy way. I’d wear every single one of those pieces for sure.

  • Shades of Annabella Sciorra when she guested on the Sopranos, no?

  • MzzPants

It’s like modern Mary Tyler Moore.

  • cool beans!

  • PinkLemon

her face. SO easy to stare at. the clothes are nice, too!

  • mjude

    i love it all

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love these clothes and I find myself really warming to her. She seems like a no-bullshit kind of gal. Perfect DKNY campaign.

  • Sara__B

She does have another facial expression, right? One with her mouth closed, maybe?

  • Ugh, Kristen Stewart’s open mouth bs is contagious!

  • She’s remarkably gorgeous, but the open mouthed repeat posing started wearing thin by the second picture.

  • formerlyAnon

These are the kind of photos that fueled my adolescent frustration: Beautiful woman, perfect clothes, living an apparently charmed life somewhere I wanted to be (any city larger than the one I lived in.) And apparently untouched by those little things which bring down the mere mortals: morning coffee slopped on a blouse, muddy puddles, cabs which don’t stop or which can’t find the address, belongings which don’t *quite* fit smoothly into one’s tote, the ugly necessity to wear sneakers for the long trek and to schlep the work shoes, the uglier necessity to carry lunch because one can’t afford to eat out.

The sixth photo (profile of perfect breasts & butt clad in strong, clean-lined grey carrying a pristine purse) would have been burned on my retinas. No need to cut it out of the magazine.

In other words, a PERFECT aspirational ad campaign.

  • I want all of these clothes NOW!

  • Thank you TLo, for the summary at the bottom, and thank you DKNY for the photos. It is so nice to see a confident woman in a fashion campaign.

  • Donna Karan is really on a roll recently. For a while she seemed to be in a slump (or a shlump – kind-of Eileen Fisher-y), but lately she’s put out some gorgeous and smart collections (and I want that coat and raspberry dress!)

  • TieDye64

She really does look stunning and the clothes are fab too. Chic and sleek, I love it.

  • guest2visits

Not crazy about the now-you-see-me-now-you-don’t dress, or the awkward looking leather skirt.
Everything else is very sophisticated and polished. Alot of black. Would love the bag on frame 5.

  • SophieCollier

She looks pretty jaw-dropping in these photos, so if you’re saying she’s even more beautiful in person, I am thoroughly in awe.  LOVE the outfits too.  So sexy and sophisticated.

  • TLO, I love LOVE the thoughtfulness of your observations. I never would have picked up on that. Brill.

  • frankystein123

Fabulous clothes, great hair, vacant eyes?

    • KathKo

      parted lips, too.
Like her nose’s stuffed so she has to breath through her mouth…
I still think she looks pretty fabulous.

  • I’m really curious to see her in person now!

  • That raspberry color is gorgeous in the sea of black.

  • glennethph

God, she’s pretty.  When I watched Twilight, she was the only one who could pull focus away from Kristen or Rob.

  • Love all the clothes. I want that purple dress!

  • librarygrrl64

WANT the first bag and the clutch!

  • CPK1

I see these gorgeous photos and clothes and all I can think, as I sit in the air conditioning,  is please please let it be Fall now.

  • Tatiana Luján

It is such a realistic styling! I love it when designers present clothes in a way they can actually be worn.
