Andrew Garfield in Balenciaga

Posted on June 20, 2012

It’s probably just a little too on-point to show up for the premiere of your Spider-Man movie dressed in red and blue.

Andrew Garfield attends “The Amazing Spider-Man” Paris premiere in Balenciaga.

Balenciaga Spring 2012 Collection

That red’s a great color on him, though. We’re really not all that crazy about pairing a blue shirt with it; especially when it looks a little sloppy on him. Then again, the whole suit does. We just don’t love that cut of jacket that splits open on the bottom like that. If even Andrew Garfield can’t pull it off without looking like he’s wearing something a size too small, what hope do mere mortal men have? It’s a style that looks good on models and virtually no one else. It’s a great-looking suit in a fabulous color, but we wish the cut and fit were a little more conventional and we wish he’d gone for a crisp, white shirt.

Also: shave, you fool. You’re wearing fucking Balenciaga.

  • Nothing about these red carpet appearances is making me want to see the new Spiderman.

    • RzYoung

Me either, I’m all Spidied out…does anyone actually want to see this? Is it a sequel, a prequel or an all new film? It’s too soon

      •  I agree! Didn’t we just have a spiderman? And man I just don’t get Andrew Garfield.

        • These two just DO NOT Have the charisma or likability to hold interest this long.

        • He’s wearing some of the most rarefied menswear on the planet and manages to look ill fitted,

      • kikisayshi

From what I gather, it’s a new take on the same story. Kinda like the 2 or 3 different Hulk movies that have come out in te last 10 years. Re-makes of re-makes. No new ideas!

      • I do.  The previews kinda rock.

      • sweetestsith

They have to keep making new spiderman movies in order to retain the movie rights. I think this is an all new film following a different storyline within the comics, but I’m not sure about that part. Regardless, I have zero interest in the franchise. Spiderman bores me. 😛

        • Aurumgirl

So, they’re going to retain the movie rights in order to continue making essentially the same movies, over and over again?  If Spiderman didn’t bore me in the past, it is certainly boring me now.

Anyway, that suit is too small and good grooming never made someone less attractive.  “Fool” is the right word.

          • sweetestsith

Apparently; I don’t really understand why the company thinks this is a good idea, but that’s what my comic book geek told me when I wtf’d about this movie. They keep making x-man movies for the same reason.

    • Me either. All they do is make me wonder why Emma Stone is dating him!

    • You’re watching the movie, not the red carpet appearance

  • HomeOfficeGirl

    Summed up perfectly!

  • My thoughts exactly, Gentlemen.  He’s wearing some of the most rarefied menswear on the planet and manages to look ill fitted, sloppy, and poorly groomed on top of it all. And that cranberry red is not a good choice for his slightly sallow skin tone.

  • Ted

Those Balenciaga suits are so gorgeous omg. I thought he’s done a pretty job here too since he does have the body frame for it.

  • ccm800

UGH. Elmo without the tickle. These two just DO NOT Have the charisma or likability to hold interest this long.

  • I used to be indifferent to him, but now I think he’s on my irrational hate list. I don’t mind the red suit but I hate the blue shirt and what is the deal with his facial expressions? It’s like he’s actively trying to look like a tool.

    • j_anson

He’s not TRYING. It just comes natural.

    • I hate him because he is a dead ringer for Jean Ralphio on Parks and Rec.  I mean, DEAD RINGER.

  • My brother-in-law had a rust colored leisure suit in 1979.  He didn’t look any better then than young Andrew does today.

But we’ve had the pleasure of teasing my BIL for 33 years.  Maybe Emma will have the same ongoing pleasure?

  • Scimommy

That red stripe makes it seem like he is about to rip off his suit to reveal the skin-tight superhero uniform underneath. That’s probably intentional.

    •  And unfortunate.

    • kimmeister

Exactly, I did a double take just to check if he was wearing something red underneath the blue shirt.

    • Spicytomato1

That’s what I thought at first, too!

  • amf0001

I actually love that shirt and in a different context it would be great, but with the suit,  it really does look like his spidey uniform is lurking underneath

  • hmariec19

“Also: shave, you fool. You’re wearing fucking Balenciaga.”

You two are hilarious. How do you do it every single day?

  • Leslie Streeter

Eh, I like it. The jacket is pulling a bit when it’s buttoned, and the blue and red is a bit literal, but I think he looks fresh and cute. And I HATE it on the model. He looks like a hipster monk, particularly in the black. I own that sort of blazer, and I’m a 41-year-old woman. Step away.

  • Lina_bee

The cut of that suit is just plain weird. It’s a lovely color and it looks beautifully made, but obviously there’s a reason the model doesn’t have his buttoned — it skews the lines badly.

  • shawnhunter

i think he looks pretty great. a little sloppy, but no major problems. i love the blue suit he wore to the moscow premiere best though.

  • MilaXX

The douche is strong in this one. I don’t mind the suit, it’s the shirt I hate. I don’t think that shade of blue works very well and the tab of red on the shirt just tips it over the edge.

  • PastryGoddess

I’m liking the red suit, not the fit or anything, but I like the idea.  He’s probably the only boystar in hollywood who can get away with it though

  • I actually love this look.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Shave, groom, stop pretending you’re a Clooney. Maybe one day, you’ll be a Gordon-Levitt. MAYBE. And that day is still far away for you, Spidey.

  • kirkyo

Gotta say I love this, especially the shirt. I don’t think going with white would be an improvement.

  • fungstyle

i’m sorry, but what am i missing here? what is this guys appeal? he looks like a scrawny, pain in the ass over grown man child to me. that smirk on his face is what does it i think. can someone explain?

  • JimMcC

Oh MAN…that suit is BEAUTIFUL. I agree that it’s a bit too Spidey paired with that shirt, but the suit and the shirt are each stunning on their own. And am I the only person who loves some scruff and never wants to see a man clean shaven?

  • crash1212

Suits too small. Looks like he forgot to take his long-johns off when he got dressed. Nice color though. Also – SHAVE! Dammit.

  • fursa_saida

The oxblood shoes were a great choice, though.

  • Little_Olive

That color does not really work on that fabric. It needs to be more wool-y. How to do it without looking like a velvet couch? I dunno.

The whole thing needed to be a side larger and then tailored. Boy looks like he can barely  breathe in there. And I get the non-matching red thing with the shirt’s button panel, but it’s not really working for me. Maybe in navy?

  • j_anson

Looking too small is part of the point. He’s a hipster. You can never find clothes that fit quite right at thrift stores, which is where hipsters shop, right?

  • PeggyOC

Actually, I think he needs the little unshaved effect here to prevent him from looking like a 12 year old.  He’s a skinny little guy in a bright red suit.  The scruff is needed to keep him from looking like Chris Coffer.

  • SapphoPoet

    It’s a very harsh look.

  • Stratos Bacalis

The styling reminds me of this old Gucci suit – which I also remember seeing on Gwyneth Paltrow. Also I think Robert Pattinson was wearing a similar one in a première.

  • Lisa Dugan

Suit is too tight and I hate the pop of red on the blue shirt.  Not really loving this one at all

    • Lisa Dugan

Amendment – I just saw a pic of the two of them together and they do look rather fabulous.

  • Candigirl1968

I think blue works in toning down the red, but the shirt with the red where the buttons are is just a step too far.

Even though this has some real issues, I appreciate that he’s trying to mix it up while still generally staying in the wheelhouse that generally works for him (unlike his co-star/girlfriend).

  • I love this look on him. Pass on the movie, but props on the Bal.

  • MK03

Bah. I like the five o’clock shadow.

  • Lilithcat

That red placket on the shirt makes it look as though he’s wearing his super-hero costume under his clothes.

  • Qitkat

I didn’t realize the cut was unconventional. I’m not exactly surrounded by men who wear suits even semi-regularly. Even though I’m surrounded by men…and little boys, none of whom has ever worn anything close to what graces these pages. lol.

Back to Andrew here, this is one beautiful suit. Love the color, can tolerate the shirt. I think you must have this boyishly slim body type to look so good. Shoulders fit, shoes polished, pants hem correct, sleeve length good, waistline in proper place. And a full glorious head of hair. Since there is no tie, I’ll let pass on the scruff.

  • MinasAunt

I like the color of the suit and that’s the nicest thing I can say about it.  Can someone take pity on me and explain why he’s supposed to be attractive?  I just don’t see it.

  • A white shirt would have made him into a candy cane. Blue was definitely one way to go, but the red seam lining throws it off a bit.

  • EEKstl

I don’t know, he’s sort of winning me over here…

  • Rebecca Johnson

Shave and for the love of christmas clean up your brows. I’m not a big proponent of manscaping, but those things are taking over his face.

  • Now I’m horny.

  • Sara__B

He’s walking the red carpet with Emma Stone who’s in that hyper-glamorous black gown with siren makeup. I don’t care how expensive his designer duds are, he looks sloppy and everyday to me. Don’t he and Emma (or their people) talk about this stuff beforehand?

  • I say “lawd whatta” you say “douche.”
    Lawd whatta douche!
    Lawd whatta douche!

Love the color of the red on him, though.

  • another_laura

J’adore that color, and it’s great on him.  His cuffs look just about right and it looks like he’s been to a tailor with it (for such small things I am too grateful!).  His stylist needed to use more imagination with that shirt, though, because the light blue and droopy collar are blech-worthy.  And yes, all youse guys, the three-day growth, I’m unimpressed.

  • gsk241

Whenever I see him, I just wish he were as cute as he thinks he is.  That said, the suit is fine.  He’s just wearing it poorly.

  • Le_Sigh

He’s like a younger Matthew Morrison but with better hair.

  • Spicytomato1

My first thought when I saw this photo elsewhere, earlier, was “Of course.” He’s becoming as predictable as Lea Michele on the RC. As I mentioned in the last post about him, I am so over him and his twee-douche schtick.

  • I just don’t understand why his pants have creases in them like he just pulled them out of his suitcase. He’s a movie star, for chrissake. Surely there are people panting to press his pants for him before he leaves the house.

  • jilly_d

I thought he was quite attractive in The Social Network but ever since he’s been out pole dancing for this movie, I am not the least bit interested. What happened here?

  • DaveUWSNYC

    Good hair…

  • holdmewhileimnaked

maybe he thinks he’ll look even more like a twelve year old if he shaves? just throwing that out there.

  • vaughn75

I love how Andrew’s copying friend Rob Pattinson’s Gucci suit from the Eclipse premiere, though Rob wore it way better.

  • I hate the “head tilt down eyes look up and smolder” pose that he does so often on the red carpet.

  • glennethph

I think he looks pretty great.  I kinda love how people bitch about him.

    • ri_dic

Me too. Don’t really get it.

  • TieDye64

I adore the suit, but not the fit on him. Great color. The shirt? No. Facial fuzz? Nope. Way to ruin a seriously fabulous suit.

  • clairellis

What is going on with his eye brows?! Seriously, those are a life form on their own.

  • formerlyAnon

    Yes, shave.

That cut jacket will not be wildly popular for long, please god.

  • Whever

You know who I could see looking good in this? David Tennant. Who am I kidding, he’s probably worn it already.

  • Monabel

Yes, shave, already! All of you!

  • guest2visits

Actually; the slightly touseled hair, the light stubble, and the small untidyness, is what lets me accept the unconventional,
and goofy suit color/style.  I just can’t take a red suit seriously.

  • golspie

He looks like such a douche. And yet the film’s supposed to be quite good.

  • Should have gotten rid of the stubble.  Otherwise he has fabulous hair.

  • He’s young, thin, and beautiful, he can get away with the suit. A shave would have made it perfect.

  • MightyMarshal

He looks plain stupid. I’m sorry but seriously. The red plaquett on the shirt looks awful with this suit.
