Will Smith in NYC

Posted on May 23, 2012

Will is feeling very optimistic about the success of his new movie, wouldn’t you say?

Will Smith makes an appearance on the “Late Show With David Letterman” in NYC.

And while this bright, sunny yellow is quite trendy right now, we don’t think it flatters Will all that much because his skin tone already has some yellow to it. It’s making him look sallow. Great suit, though. But we’re hopelessly white and never going to get behind the whole “white kicks with dress pants” thing. Sorry.

We kinda miss the Will Smith from when he was fun and irreverent. Now he’s such an establishment android he’s morphing into Tom Cruise right in front of our eyes (they said, dropping a lit match onto the pile and running away).

LOL literally at  “(they said, dropping a lit match onto the pile and running away).”
No argument from me. Although dude was rocking the plaid suits last week.

  • RebeccaKW

The yellow is great, but I agree, it’s not his color.  I don’t have a problem with CLEAN all white kicks with a suit, depending on who is wearing it.  On Mark Ruffalo, it would be a mistake.  On Will, it’s good.  Overall, I think he looks good, minus the color. He always looks happy, like he’d be fun to be around.  Better than the “i’m trying to look super hot and mysterious’ pose.

  • Go back to the plaid, Will. And yes, his Cruise is starting to show.

  • BrooklynBomber

With the blindingly bright yellow sweater and white sneaks, he looks like he should be getting out of a golf cart, not a limo.
And though normally gray and yellow are a great combination, they’re not if when the yellow is lemon-daisy-butter-corny-as-Kansas-in-August yellow. Ouch.

    • JosephLamour

omg this sweater is just. so. YELLOW. I want to find the dimmer switch that must have come with it.

  • MoHub

    It’s better with the jacket.

  • guest2visits

I’m ok with the yellow sweater and the white sneaks.  He wears them well.

  • Sobaika

Oh no, TLo! Please don’t compare him to Tom Cruise, they are miles and miles apart. I certainly can’t imagine him in that horrific W cover, at the very least.

I still find Will Smith really fun. He was on Graham Norton recently and led the audience in a rendition of the Fresh Prince theme song 🙂

    • Isadora Paiva

Oh, I love Graham Norton! And yes he was fun in that, though if there is one chat show host that can bring out the fun in their guests is Graham, he managed to make Kristen Stewart smile two weeks ago!

      • Yeah, but as I said in another post, Kristin is useless as a talk show guest. He might have made her smile, but she didn’t have a lot to say. Of course, Chris Rock repeatedly interrupting her didn’t help.

        • Sobaika

Chris Rock is what that made the interview worth watching! For me anyway. I don’t find Kristen Stewart to be very engaging on her own, it would’ve been painful without him.

    • JackieOBlue

Agreed, Will Smith and Tom Cruise should never be compared to one another.  TC is beyond creep and annoying.  Will Smith, always entertaining.

  • vanjar

Well, you can run but you can’t hide. 🙂 I hate white shoes as much as  ‘not so new and white any more’ white shoes. They remind me of pharmacists shoes. Also not liking the glued on smile.

    • TropiCarla

🙂 My hubby the pharmacist never wears white shoes on the job … but owns at least three pairs of all-white sneaks.
I am always flabbergasted when we are in a shoe store that every shoe he picks up to show me is all-white. LOL

  • PastryGoddess

I preferred it without the jacket.  The combo of casual top and more tailored bottoms is nice.  I’m not even looking past his ankles

    • Sobaika

Definitely, the look is great without the jacket. With it he looks silly and kind of bulky.

    • Vickiefantastico

That’s exactly what I thought. I wasn’t in love with the look, but I could handle it. Then he put on the jacket and completely lost me.

  • sneakers with suits or dress pants gives me rage face.  The only person that can even somewhat remotely carry that off is Robert Downey Jr.
Mr Smith needs to stick to the plaid suits. This screams lunch at the Villages in Florida apres golf.

And RDJ pulls it off because he wears interesting sneakers…not boring white ones.  I <3 RDJ!

      • RDJ could show up wearing a hessian sack belted with rope and I would still adore him.

    • I dont think RDJ pulls it off because he’s so sloppy. It’s working better on Will.

  • lovelyivy

He should send that sweater to Kimor’a husband, the FABULOUS Djimon Honsou. It was clearly meant for a dark skinned brotha.

  • I mean, he and Tom are BFFs. It would only make sense for Will to be morphing into Tom. I do really like this outfit, though, but I agree about the yellow. The shoes are not my thing, but I think he pulls them off.

  • Melissa Brogan

His fashion and movies may be establishment android, but his music is still interesting.

  • PaulaBerman

I think he looks cute, but what is going ON with him lately? Did he and Jada split up and then reunite? Confused.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

No no I don’t see him morphing into Tom Cruise at all.  Smith seems to be a rather grounded sort of person.  Cruise?   Well let’s see what starship he’s getting on this week…

  • love the sweater with the suit.
also don’t mind the white tennies.
men get much more leeway when it comes to shoes.  why is that?

  • one word: Scientology

    • Patti Lever

That’s why it’s cool to live in the US, we can choose to follow whatever religion we like. As crazy as Scientology seems to be, it’s his choice.

  • He has definitely drunk the Hollywood cool aid

    • Pants_are_a_must

I love how non-explicit we all are in here, so this doesn’t actually become gossip speculation.

      • That’s us, Bitter Kitten Gossip Mongers LTD.

  • Damn it, I just love this.

  • janetjb

  • Sara__B

Sunglasses are required to safely view this outfit.

I’m okay with the bright cheerful sweater, but the blinding shoes don’t work with a suit.

    • kimmeister

  • amywinns

I like the look better with the jacket — really helps diminish his sallowness and it’s a nice daytime-casual twist on the traditional suit. Without the jacket, the pants took too dressy for the other elements. Those clean white sneakers that pick up the crisp white shirt are OK by me for this event. It feels very polished but without a lot of effort, which I appreciate. For a red-carpet, it would be a no, but for a TV appearance, I think it’s cool.

  • mommyca

Well…. I guess now HIS daughter is the fun and irreverent…. 🙂 but I still like him and don’t see him anything like Tom Cruise….

    • MilaXX

THIS! I liked Tom Cruise during the Risky Business era and after that he just became insufferable to me.

  • Lina_bee

I dunno.  Neck down I think he’s rocking the look, but the more I look at his face, the more bleeding obvious it is how HARD he’s pole-dancing for this flick.  At least in these shots, I don’t get a sense that he’s having any fun with it at all. Which is sad because he’s charming as hell and he has that rare gift to make FUN contagious. You can’t help but enjoy HIM when he’s enjoying himself.  *hits him with the happy stick*

  • Cathy S

    I love that sweater.

  • Little_Olive

Ugh, Amen to that. ESpecially the second part.

Also, his face looks… swollen? puffy?

  • This kind of reminds me of something Ellen Degeneres would wear.

  • Clueless_Jock

    Very sharp.

  • mjude

boy that really is a yellow sweater.  love him but not that shade.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

I like the yellow sweater as an accent when he’s wearing the jacket, but not so much as a stand alone piece.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Too late; he’s already Tom Cruise.

Even without the yellow, the sweater doesn’t flatter him. He is a dude concerned with his physique, but in here he looks like someone’s favorite beer-drinking uncle. In a $5,000 suit.

  • AuntieAnonny

    I can see his Depends.

    • Qitkat

  • He looks like an 8th grade math teacher (and after school tennis coach) without the jacket.

  • Um…yes, he is turning into Tom Cruise.
Agree that this shade of yellow is not his shade.

  • i love kicks with suits (yay, ellen!) but not blinding white, off-to-do-laps-in-the-mall-kicks.  slap some black addidas sambas or shell toes on, and we can talk.

  • Snailstsichr

The pop of yellow looked good on Letterman. And it was refreshing to see someone (male) who cared enough to dress for the show.

  • sashaychante

Just waiting for his jumping on the couch moment.  Bound to happen…he is approaching mid-life 🙂

I used to love Fresh Prince.

  • bluefish

I like the color combo here — white, yellow, gray.  I kinda miss the old Will Smith too — before the WS scene became a family affair that assaults these senses.

  • MilaXX

TAKE IT BACK! I still adore Will. I thought the yellow worked, especially with the grey suit jacket added to tone it down. I don’t mind sneakers with suits done right.

  • the sweater is okay under the suit jacket.
will can wear clean white kicks with a suit. the fact is, some people can get away with looks other people must let go of, no matter how much they like them. sigh. i miss wearing cons with suits.

  • Susan Crawford

Yep. The Tom Cruise thing is definitely happening here. Trying way too hard these days.

  • kikisayshi

Love the yellow! It’s a lot better with the jacket on though.

  • Candigirl1968

I was thinking Gen X Bill Cosby.

  • Can’t really stomach the guy.

  • Lilyana_F

OMG, the “morphing into Tom Cruise” comment! Preach!

  • I think he looks good! Nothing outstanding, but for a fun, boyish actor, this look works for him. I don’t even mind the yellow.

  • Cheri Lee

No Cruise here! Love me some Fresh Prince, man!!!

  • Belvane

Love the yellow on him — it does bring out the golden tones in his skin, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. He glows!

  • Obligatory pulling at the crotch in pic 2 comment

  • MzzPants

I think he looks bright and camera-ready.  Not many people can wear yellow, granted.

He’ll join the Cruise Club when he starts molesting furniture on a national forum.  Until then, I still love Will.

  • Alexander Peterhans

He has the exact same expression in every picture. Beyond creepy.

  • butter nut

it’s fine & dandy till you get to the sneakers, which make him look like a giant toddler.

  • I love him. I think he looks comfortable. At first, I thought this looked really weird, but then when I saw it with the jacket, I understood the reason for those pants. And this is a late night appearance. I can forgive a lot.

  • enid soto

Yes to everything but the shoes. They make him look silly.

  • I agree about the color of the sweater, but I like the idea of a very bright sweater with a good suit.

  • Totally with you on the T.C. thing. There is something very fakey – almost like a politician or something – about his appearances. Can’t deny he looks great though.

  • HobbitGirl

Huh. I must have missed out on a lot of Will Smith stuff.  Where’s the Cruise connection? Has he started jumping on couches? Smith’s got about two feet of height too much for that.

    • Mary Pressler

well, they’re both into Scientology, for one…

  • There is no excuse for a millionaire to be wearing a nice suit with sneakers. Actually, there’s no reason for any man to wear that combo.

  • quiltrx

Gene Kelly called, and told you to QUIT THAT SHIT.

  • It’s the hair. That’s what’s bothering me here.

  • Zippypie

I don’t mind the yellow or the gladhanding smile or even if he believes that Xenu existed, let alone put aliens in volcanos, but the SHOES…Jesus wept.

  • I’m actually totally okay with the fact that a black man is (becoming?) a Hollywood establishment and headlining major blockbusters. How many other PoC get any recognition for playing characters other than cosmic mentors and sassy “urban” women?

  • No white sneakers ever. Ever. Sorry, but I just have an irrational hatred for them and they look utterly ridiculous here.

  • Lexie

I don’t know about NYC, but upstate NY has been SUPER muggy/hot lately, how is he wearing a shirt, sweater, AND jacket?!  I like the yellow, but this seems a little more Mr. Rodgers than movie star to me.

  • Lisa

Yeah, yellow’s not good for his complexion, and I hate white sneaks with a good suit.

  • marilyn

I can deal with all of it but the shoes.

  • Alisa Rivera

Aren’t Cruise and Smith supposed to be a thing? As in enjoying together time in the Scientology closet?

  • whitrome

“You know what the difference is between me and you? I make this look GOOD!”
–just don’t try to kiss him on the mouth, ya’ll.

  • HM3

Anyone notice that his eyebrows frown while his teeth smile? Somewhat concerning…

I love the yellow. I think it matches his skin color perfectly.

  • yybb

I like all but shoes on him. He seems very tired.

  • Louise Bryan

Looks good with the jacket; without, it reminds me of my dad in his late 50s / early 60s, relaxing on the weekends with a beer, after 18 holes and mowing the lawn (though he would probably be wearing worn out office pants, not such nice ones as Will is wearing).

  • Yup

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

lol totally dug through carlton’s closet for this outfit

  • He’s trying to nick RDJ’s act and failing imo.

  • formerlyAnon

He’s getting older. For me this outfit is his fashion chops at war with the temptation to slide into “middle-aged-Dad:” sweater over dress shirt, respectable slacks. Oh, I’m going to be on t.v.? I’ll grab the jacket. But, but, I’m supposed to still have “a little somethin’ goin’ on,” so I’d better get out of these loafers . . .

  • TomBord

oh look!  it’s the almost black tom cruise.
