WERQ: Kylie Minogue in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on May 25, 2012

Kylie Minogue attends the premiere of ‘Holy Motors’ during the Cannes Film Festival in a Dolce&Gabbana gown.

When you’re a diva, sometimes a gold sequined gown and your very best shapewear are all you need to attain goddess-hood. You WERQ that shimmer, Miss Lady!

  • Who cares if you need to be able to breath when you’re WERQing the shit out of that sequin masterpiece.  The things we do for fashion.

  • Her face is terrifying.

  • LOVE the sequined dress, and she is werqing it right into its next lifetime. However, somehow when I first saw these shots, and now as well, she looks 20 years older to me.  Help me out, kittens. what am I seeing here? Is it lighting? make-up? what?

    •  I think it’s from the reflection of the sequins onto her face – it’s highlighting all the wrinkles that wouldn’t normally be as noticeable.

      •  That sure seems to be a part of the problem.

        • CPK1

I also think the shape of her brows is not helping. She looks like an aging drag queen.

          • It’s the botox

          • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, one brow is severely arched, the other not, it’s doing weird things to her face….

          • guestela

Yeah, I can’t help but wonder if her right brow is frozen in that position.

          • schadenfreudelicious

          • dress_up_doll

It’s definitely the shimmer of gold reflecting on her face as well as the exaggerated eyebrows.

It’s definitely the shimmer of gold reflecting on her face as well as the exaggerated eyebrows.

        • I also think the gold eyeshadow she is wearing has some kind of shimmery texture that has the effect of making her upper lids just look wrinkled and crepe-y.

ETA: Ha, I should have read all the comments before replying to this, since others said the exact same thing, even using the word “crepey”!

    • RzYoung

I think the phenomena with sequin gowns reflecting light up from under the chin isn’t helpful – remember how funny Carey Mulligan looked at that ball the other week with the fish scales reflecting on her face?  – perhaps that’s to blame? I still think she looks tip top though, I’m not even worrying about her wayward eye brow, it’s been doing it’s own thing for years. I saw her in concert last year and she’s so stunning in real life, i was totally star struct!

      •  I’m noticing too, that her make up is mighty shiny, plus that eyeshadow looks weirdly lumpy. Its all conspiring to make her look MUCH older than she is.

        • ballerinawithagun

The first thing I noticed was the coppery, shiny eyeshadow that really makes her lids look crepey. Once you are out of your twenties, matte is the only way to go.

          •  I will remember this wise council, for that far in the future date, when I myself am out of my 20’s.
(BWAH hah hah hah hah hah)

          • TieDye64

Can I divorce my darling husband and marry you? It would be absolutely platonic, of course (and amazing), and we’d be free to have our own, ahem, extracurricular activities. But, gawd, you’re fab beyond belief. Kilt and all. You slay me. That is all.

Obviously love my other half to death, but you really are a joy.

          •  OMG I am so flattered by this, I can’t being to say.  What a sweet and lovely compliment. You my dear TieDye, have made my day. Thank you very much indeed.
And of course we can marry.

          • TieDye64

Haha, you’re sweet. Come to Alaska and we’ll get things rolling. 😀

          •  Alaska!  Where in Alaska?  I’ve only had the pleasure of visiting once, and for too short a time.

          • TieDye64

Oh, you’ve visited? I hope you’ve seen more than Anchorage. I live in Kenai, home of the “monster” King Salmon. I lived in Kodiak for years as well (beautiful!). I’ve been here so long it’s a shock to go outside to the “real” world.

          •  Never made it to Anchorage.  I was on a cruise from SF and got to Juneau, Kettichikan, and Sitka.  I also managed to get to the glorious Hubbard Glacier, which left me slack jawed.  You live in a place of such magnificence.

I rarely wear makeup and went to put on some eyeshadow with a bit of shimmer. I was horrified to see how crepey my eyes have become and immediately wiped off the shimmery stuff for matte eyeshadow. Modern technology can only hold back aging for so long 🙁

          • TieDye64

Here here. Doesn’t it just suck?

        • Anathema_Device

I rarely wear eyeshadow as it is, and I stopped with the metallic stuff right around age 40 for the reasons illustrated in this photo.

      • vanjar

Did you go to the Aphrodite tour? I did and I had a ball. She’s so much fun, connects with the audience and has great outfits. I loved the water and aerial display of ‘All the lovers’. which showed off the physique of the male dancers very nicely. 🙂

        • amf0001

we saw here in NYC on a tiny stage for such a huge act… and very nice boys accompanying.  Great show!

        • RzYoung

Yep I saw her at the O2 London, i had SUCH a good time, everyone there was so happy and she’s a brilliant performer, what a voice! The men were fab too!

    • Maybe it’s the botox and Kate Winslet eyebrows?

    • fallen_ikon

I think it’s a combination of the sequins reflecting off her face and some botox. Her forehead looks a little too tight, smooth, and shiny (in other words, plastic) to be natural, as do her cheeks. The sequins are reflecting off her jawline in many of the pictures, which also contributes to the weirdness.

    • stardust462

I think it’s the combination of the weird eyeshadow texture and reflections. In any of the pictures if you cover up the right side of her face where all the reflections are and her raised eyebrow showing off the weird shadow, she looks great.

      •  Looks like you’re all agreed that the harshness of the lighting, throwing the reflections up onto her face, is not doing her any favors.
        Thanks everyone!

    • drdirection

She is 43 yrs old.  She should have MORE wrinkles than that.  The botoxed smoothness looks ridiculous.

      •  I don’t really follow her career or music, so I had no idea she was in her 40’s.  That explains it for me.  I had thought she was much younger than that.  You’re right about the super smoothness.

        • mountainFashionista

I thought you were inappropriately age-snarking in your original comment, since I remember her first big international hit happening when I was in high school in the 1980s!

I’m glad to know you’re still the nice person you seem like in your comments  🙂

          • I’m glad I’m vindicated! I sure didn’t mean any snarkiness. I was more surprised that such a lovely woman looked so harsh and hard.

          • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Kiltd, are you EVER snarky?  You just seem too well raised to make snarky comments very often.  Your mama did a good job.  🙂

          • Oh I can get my snark on from time to time. But it’s usually reserved for good close friends, who are present at the time, and are well capable of defending their own honor. And thank you very much for the sweet compliment, it’s very much appreciated.

      • You must be very young to think 43 is ancient. My daughter is 43 and doesn’t have a wrinkle on her face.

On the other hand, I’m not saying that Kylie might not have enjoyed some injections before her trip to Cannes.

    • Tatiana Luján

shiny eyeshadows+wrinkles. If your lids are wrinkled, I think you should stick to matt eyeshadow.

    • annrr

Its the eye shadow. You can’t do shimmer past a certain age. You put it on and think it looks great at home and get where ever you are going and it already looks terrible. At least her eyes don’t look crazy red like mine get from glittery eye shadow.

    • altissima

20years older than what?!? She looks damn fabulous for a woman over 40!

  • She owns that body of hers, but her face looks pretty scary. The eyeshadow’s not helping.

  • RzYoung

  • My only quibble is that it’s a little too close in color to her hair, but otherwise I can’t complain about the WERQ for this one.

  • PeaceBang

I agree that she’s wearing it perfectly, but the look is wrong for her. It’s statuesque diva goddess, and she’s too adorable for all that. I hate the earrings so much.

    • ballerinawithagun

I disagree. I’m glad she moved out of the adorable looks. Even though she is small in stature, her personality Amazonian!

    • I disagree about the look being wrong but TOTALLY agree about the earrings! So, so yellow and horrible! Green or blue would have been better.

  • She looks magnifique

  • judith traherne

    Staircase posing! That takes poise.

    • Doesn’t it?  I’m terrified to walk up or down stairs in heels without a death grip on the hand rail. Factor in a beyond floor length gown and what are no doubt huge platforms under there and she’s risking life and limb just to pose.

      • Pennymac

Not to mention a zillion flashes going off in your face so you’re seeing spots. She needs a Hot Ginger Handler.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

We could call it “poising” and it could be staircase specific.

For example – at the end of Sunset Blvd Norma Desmond is poising!

      • Pennymac

Agreed! Quick, lets e-mail Tyra and tell her we have a new word for her!

  • moppet

I don’t like to comment beyond clothing but something is going on with her right eyebrow that is distracting. It wouldn’t be so noticeable if it weren’t so arched in every shot.

  • She WERQ that metalic mermaid look. fierce, darling.

  • I’m mostly terrified by the “melting man” on the stairs behind her.  Holy hell, that HEM!!!

    • TieDye64

HaHaaaa! Melting man’s hem IS scary.

    • TieDye64

HaHaaaa! Melting man’s hem IS scary.

  • T&Lo, this look def warrants for neck rolls and snaps up in both the circle and Z formation.

  • She’s still got it.

  • The dress is amazing; however, the eye makeup is a bit strange, it makes her look older.

I really like the relationship between the “older” face (analyzed by others as produced by the reflections) and the goddess body. She looks gloriously human in that glowing dress.

  • siriuslover

Kylie, I can’t get you out of my head, you sequined Diva! You work that gown!!!

  • enid soto

Her skin is almost completely covered, but dang she looks amazing. This must be a super power. Her eyes look strange though, I hope it’s just bad makeup.

  • Cheri Lee

I have never been a big fan of hers, just never got into her music but grrl can werq it all day and night!

    • TieDye64

      My thoughts exactly.

    She’ll be 44 on Monday!

  • MilaXX

    Pretty golden pixie.

  • *gloats about being Australian*

  • Judy_J

    Super shiny!

  • Anathema_Device

Great blinding boobs, she looks fabulous!  (My new epithet.)

  • SewingSiren

Perfect dress for the occasion and wearer.

  • Pants_are_a_must

    Lady Oscar.

    In a good way!

  • guest2visits

This might be perfect if Kylie switched out the eye make-up and earrings for something else.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Gold sequined dresses cannot be WERQ-ed by just anyone, but she’s definitely doing it.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

& credit where it’s due: she is a master [mastress?] at perfect posing.

  • Qitkat

I never knew who she was til that episode of Doctor Who, but her face looks really aged* here.
As sparkle dresses go, it’s a fine one, but fits like a second skin. Looks uncomfortable.

*Read some other posts before clicking to send mine. I notice some of the other BK’s think that’s due to the blinding glare of reflected sequins.

  • Dagney

    Very Oleg Cassini circa 1988.

    “BAM!  I’m fabulous, Bitches!”

On another note, is that eyebrow permanently raised, or what?

  • Melvis Velour

That other Aussie, Nicole Kidman, could learn a few things here…

  • I honestly think it’s glam as shit to have sequin reflection lighting up your face.  WERQ it Diva girl!

(But if that is botox brow, please reconsider.)

  • msdamselfly

Her face does not really appeal to me at all  sorry

  • TieDye64

    Serving up liquid gold Aphrodite!

  • TieDye64

  • saanrio

I… don’t see this a WERQ, honestly.  This is SO MUCH gold, and so much bright lighting.. she looks aged.  I guess I do not see the allure of a gown made entirely of sequins outside of Vegas.  There, I said it… it looks kind of cheap to me.

Also, it bothers me that she has the exact same expression in every picture.  How long did she hold that one, I wonder?  I feel for her facial muscles.

  • golspie

My god, she’s younger than me but she looks ten years older and I, to be frank, haven’t aged well. That face is too taut and shiny. If it’s lifted any more she’ll be wearing a beard.

  • fursa_saida

What the hell happened to her left eyebrow? Did somebody accidentally lift it more than the other one? Is she raising it in every shot in some weird attempt to look sly and mysterious? It seriously looks stuck like that.

  • LOVE HUH! She is not only a diva, but a breast cancer survivor and she looks fabulous. The dress is more impressive when you consider she is 5’2″ and the proportions don’t give her height away. She’s still rocking the hot pants in her new video!

  • ErinnF

I recently got Botox at a “med spa” where the technician obviously didn’t know what she was doing and my right eyebrow is doing the same damn thing now. It sucks. I look like Jack Nicholson as The Joker. NEVER USE A GROUPON FOR BOTOX, KIDS!

I feel your eyebrow pain, Kylie. It’ll come down in a couple of months. :-

  • um. Botox much?
