WERQ: Jada Pinkett-Smith in Versace

Posted on May 14, 2012

We couldn’t do another Pairs Division post on the Smith-Pinkett-Smiths because it was getting a little played out and because he wore another poorly fitted suit again and how many times can we have that particular conversation with him, darlings?

Besides, the lady deserves the spotlight for this one.

Jada Pinkett-Smith attends the premiere of “Men In Black 3” premiere in Madrid in a Versace dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Versace Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Melissa Tammerijn

Jimmy Choo ‘Greta’ Lamé-covered Suede Sandals

That is one tough-as-hell dress to pull off and the percentage of the population who can manage it is in the tenths of a percentage. Even smaller when you remove drag queens from the equation. But girl has got it going on all up and down and we’ve gotta tip our hats and snap our fingers to that one. You WERQ that Versayce*, girl!

Sorry… looks like she’s got a burp rag or a dishcloth stuck in her dress.  Did no one but Jimmy make sandals this year?

    • angryparsnip

I so agree, she shortened the dress but left the dish towel the longer length.
The length looks better on the model.

    • Looks like a 1950’s girdle swimsuit that comes with its own towel.  Ugly.  No werq.

      • mountainFashionista

It’s weird — I agree with Daddies on almost everything, but almost never on their WERQ choices.  I wonder what that’s about?

  • hughman

    1. BeDazzler

    2. GET OUT!

  • Nice. I’d prefer the bottom be uniform because like someone above said, it’s a little dishraggy. But can we talk about her hair? It’s _________

  • Nice. She really loves her legs doesn’t she? The bottom should’ve just been uniform, remove that rag on the bottom. Her hair on the other hand takes some discussion. I like it but something seem off at the same time.

    • lamamu

Girl has every reason to love her legs. But I agree about the rag bottom. The pseudo-Greek revival thing does nothing for this dress. No need to soften anything worn by the JP-S.

  • Violina23

That is one hot momma! She looks awesome. And I covet those sandals…

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Add me to the list of people who are coveting those sandals…not that I could actually walk in them, but they are fab.

  • janetjb

Add a few more inches to the length and I’d totally agree with you.

  • kimmeister

She appears to have matched her eyeshadow to the dress.

  • ccinnc

Her left nipple seems poised to make an appearance. Dislike.

  • MilaXX

Love it. She could stand some polish on the toes, but overall I like this a lot. It fits her tiny frame well.

  • Trisha26

Part toga part armor. Doesn’t work at all for me.

  • schadenfreudelicious

not diggin the wayward dishrag/loincloth look she has going on….

  • PastryGoddess

At least she toned down the oil this time.  And thank you for the Showgirls reference

    • Kristin McNamara

oh my god, i know, right? i laughed out loud at that reference hahahaha

  • Sophie Collier

But, it’s still an ugly dress.  I don’t get the snaps.

  • Lori

At first glance I was inclined to agree with the WERQ, even though I think the dress is ridiculous, but there are a lot of things wrong here. The hair is a snore. The green eye shadow is not good. The top of the dress is digging into her boobs in a bad way and I’m 99% we’re seeing a little aureola on the left side there. The fact that the uneven hems make the giant burp cloth stand out is Not Good. And last but not least, who in the world wears $1,100 sandals and doesn’t bother to get a decent manicure? I don’t know if she’s wearing very pale polish or clear or none at all, but in any case it’s really not getting the job done.

    In short, nope.

    • TieDye64

She looks like she’s had a pedicure to me. Just because she decides not to wear colored polish may be a personal preference. Me, I like my showy pedis, but not everyone shares my personal taste. BTW I mean no disrespect in the least. Each one of us has our personal opinions.

  • SpcilK

What! That dress is too many different things. Her body is BANGING, but she has lost her light and this dress washes her out.

  • It can’t be a nip slip – the main part of her bust is clearly well below the top of the dress.  Just an unfortunate shadow, I think.  And yes, the dishrag should have been shortened to match the dress.  But still a WERQ.

  • BazoDee

I’m so torn -my first impression was WERQ. But when I looked closely at it -the bust area is too tight and not flattering. But that dress is so hard to pull off I’ll overlook it.

  • 1. I don’t like her hair.
    2. OMG she has a phenomenal ass.

  • I dunno. I’m torn. She’s kind of smokin’ that dress, even though it’s not my fave style. Reminds me of hubby’s line in MIB: “She makes this look GOOOD.”  I do love the color on her!

But it still looks to me like she’s struggling to put out a smile. She just looks sad.  I’m hoping I’m reading too much into it and that she’s enjoying how fab she looks!

    • funkypeanut

I imagine she’s exhausted. The MiB3 poledancing seems to be moving along at a rather rapid pace. Weren’t they just all over southeast Asia, and now she’s in Milan? I’d be poopticated, too.

Other than that, she looks great. I think that this dress suits her better than it does the not-at-all-edgy model.

    • AudreysMom

Maybe exhausted like funkypeanut said, but J P-S always seems to have that smile issue. She always looks a bit strained but fierce. Like she spends 6 hours a day in the gym, manages a corporation, gets to all of her kids’ school events and can kick anybody’s ass but isn’t happy about it.

  • turtleemily

It looks like she rolled the hemline into itself to fix the length. The beading on hers is cut-off where there’s further pattern on the runway image.

  • roadtrip1000

Just an aside: Although I see them for sale all over I rarely see women wear heels this high. And when I do see women wearing heels this high they always look ridiculous. Their gait is awkward and they look like an accident waiting to happen. I for one will be very happy when this fashion is put to rest.
P.S. I’m talking about what I see in Manhattan, NYC.

  • Lisa

I dunno – I wouldn’t go so far as WERQ.  It’s a little superhero-ish to me.  A little “Lady Thor”, if you will.  Maybe if Will’s blockbuster movie was “The Avengers” instead of MIB 3″, I could see it tying in.

  • golspie

She’s too old for the dress. I’m not saying she doesn’t have the looks or the body for it but her expression and her posture mitigate against it now.

    • formerlyAnon

Though, by that measure, she’s too old for much of what she wears. It is why she so often ruins a decent look for me by radiating “I”M TRYING TOO HARD” as if it were hung over her head in neon.

She dresses firmly in the “if your body’s still fantastic, go ahead and wear the dresses you’d be wearing if I you were 23” camp.  That philosophy seems to have plenty of supporters among the Bitter Kittens as well. So I tend to think my feeling that some looks are best left to the young and dewy, even if you can still fit into them and nothing sags noticeably, is perhaps outmoded.

  • Anathema_Device

I do like her in this dress. The color is great on her, and I’m not sure who else could pull it off as well. Not sure I’m loving the hair, but I can’t really tell against that backdrop.

  • Judy_S

I agree. She looks like she is in control of that crazy dress. The long gowns looked like they were in control of her.

  • Patricia Gillett

Well deserved WERQ. The shoes and the dress were made for each other. Her figure makes me want to close the laptop and get on the treadmill.

  • kittenwithaquip

Ha! Totally made me think of Nomi and “Showgirls” even before throwing in “Versayce”.

  • 3boysful

    Cute shoes, hiddy dress.

  • glennethph

It reminds me of the towel that the quarterback has dangling from his pants.

  • muzan-e

    … I’m so happy now that I can’t even thread a needle.

  • Looking at the model, I don’t think it’s that hard of a dress to be pulled off. Plus that hair, I, I just can’t…

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I can’t be the only one who 1) has never been able to pronounce Versace correctly after Showgirls, and 2) cannot say Versayce without doing that hand thing the dancers did?  Showgirls — one of the worst movies of all time, one of the best movies of all time.  RPDR needs to have a challenge revolving around scenes from Showgirls.

  • kerry dee

I actually think the colour is quite unflattering on her. IF it were white or even a light pink, it would look much better.

  • Where are her varicose veins? Surely she’s of age for them to be making appearances. Girl has legs of a 15 year old.

    • formerlyAnon

Some folk don’t have ’em. Genetics has a lot to do with it.  But they can usually get rid of ’em, & you KNOW girlfriend would be getting those suckers tended to immediately should any pop up.

  • girliecue

It’s a towel dress with a little interest. Not bad, much better than her usual wack, but not a WERQ. Great shoes, though.

  • I wanna see Willam Belli in it before I grade Jada.

  • This would’ve been so great, if they had kept the skirt a uniform length. Now she just looks like a waitress with a dish towel. So sad how one detail can ruin a look, but that weird sash steals focus. A for effort, though.

  • TieDye64

Normally I wouldn’t like this dress one little bit, but I agree with you guys in that she’s pulling it off and girl is actually making it look good. Damn, those legs! Body body body.

  • formerlyAnon

I prefer the model’s hem – in the ‘stuck a dishtowel in her waistband’ camp on her version. But she looks good in it otherwise.

I generally have no trouble with “matchy” but I think the shoes are a little pedestrian.

  • butterflysunita

Not a WERQ for me, though that’s not Jada’s fault.  She’s beautiful, but that dress is ugly.

  • VioletFem

Can’t deny it. She looks amazing.

  • Amy Ellinger

Da-Yum Gurrrrlll!!!  but seriously, those legs!

  • nannypoo

This would be a lot better without the towel detail, but she really has the body for a dress like this. She always seems to know that she looks great.

  • Susan Crawford

Ditch that extra flap and you’ve got one hella dress. I don’t get WHY that piece of chiffon is hanging there – it breaks the line of the dress, and not in a good way. If you’re going to go tough and studded, don’t try to have it all soft and girlycue as well.

But I will say that Jada is werqing this look like nobody’s business, and Versace should bow down in gratitude for her performance.

  • TomBord

    mean and greasy.

  • Bozhi

    That is a WERQ.

  • ccm800

none for me thanks. It makes her shape up top like a boys. The dishrag in the waist is just stupid and I think the proportions cut her dead in half.

  • cleep1000

  • BradWatson

Men In Black. Girls In Washed-Out Studded Pistachio.  HId-jiss.

  • bellafigura1

Wouldn’t change a thing.  The color of the earrings with that dress, inspired. WERQ.

  • alyce1213

Now THAT’S what that beautiful lady should be wearing!  WERQ indeed.

  • Wow.  She looks amazing.

  • Lina_bee

She looks like a million bucks, but the fit around her left breast is terrible. CHAFING = BAD. Donatella ought to know better!

  • lordandtaylor

If you are going to shorten the dress (which you really should not), you need to shorten the waiter’s towel hanging from the waste. Result: You look like a cross betweena cocktail waitress at Caesar’s Palace and a waitress at Apple Bees. Enough said.

  • Judy_J

the top of that dress makes MY breasts hurt.

  • suzq

Thanks for the “Showgirls” quote.  So appropriate.  Unfortunately, the dress photographed too yellow.  I think the spring green would have been more flattering to Jada.

    • I was thinking the same thing.  I’m sure it looks really good in person, but it didn’t photograph well on the red carpet.  At least she’s not dressed like Willow or Jayden.

  • Call me Bee

    Stunning.  In a good way!

  • Nariya

Something about this dress looks a bit juvenile to me. Miley Cyrus or something. Is it the neon color?  I feel like it’s not elegant enough for JPS.

  • Lilithcat

Did she shorten the dress or lengthen the chiffon panel?  Either way, it looks weird, with that napkin/bar towel/whatever tucked into the waistband.  The original was better.

  • nancylee61

I hate the chiffon panel! Looks like she got toilet paper stuck in her waistband. Otherwise, the dress looks gorgeous on her. But no WERQ from me.

  • GTrain

I don’t like this dress but she is wearing the hell out of it. She looks amazing.

  • It’s nice to see her smiling in at least one picture, for once. She always looks so SOUR. Which takes just about all of her looks down.

  • She WERQs the dress and you WERQ those Showgirls quotes.

  • guest2visits

I want to like it because it’s the third one in a row that I just don’t.  If it’s going to be that snug; it really needs a few more
inches. Right now it’s not a dress, it’s a tacky gladiator tunic top.

  • J MN

I don’t care for it; it’s not werqing for me.  The shortened length makes the look a little cheap, regardless of the cost.  There comes a point when your children are teenagers, you’ve hit the 40 year mark that good taste suggests a little modesty.  Coupled with the sky high sandals and it’s like she’s trying too hard.

  • sononagal

Oh no – I disagree with you again!  This one is an example of “girl – this is not your dress”.  Way too short, way too lime, way too age-inappropriate, way too Xena warrior princess, and way way way too tight!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I like the color on her, and generally think she looks fine.  But as everyone else has commented, the dishrag should have been shortened along with the skirt, and her hair is too severe, as usual.  It is a pretty dress.  I would have left the length alone.

  • Zippypie

I’ve been on the other side of your WERQs lately, boys.  She looks like a hootchie mama wearing a waiter’s rag in this dress.  If the skirt of the dress was lengthened to the length of the rag, it would have been okay as the color is good on her.  However, she’s been doing a lot of very minimalist makeup on the red carpet on this tour and it’s just not WERQing for me.

  • aristida_girl

now I totally want to see Showgirls, it looks amazing, thanks guys!

  • Love it on her, predictable Versashay, happy she’s covering up the shaven sides of her head.

  • Love it. Love the eye shadow, too.
