WERQ: Harry Shum Jr.

Posted on May 02, 2012

Normally we think the hanging suspenders is a ridiculously pretentious look, but Harry Shum, Jr…

Harry Shum Jr. attends Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ “Glee” Screening.

You WERQ that newsboy shit, boy! We love everything you’re wearing here. Extra snaps for being cute!

  • Is it me or does he look sick? Like he has a fever and wants to throw up…?

    • I second that.  I usually find him attractive, but he is not looking well here.

      • Yeah.  He looks ill.

        • Megan Patterson

I think he’s doing that “wet look” thing to his hair, and it’s making him look like he’s having a fever.

    • zmayhem

Was this a screening of last night’s episode? Because that would totally explain it.

I’m kind of sad that TLo gave up on Glee a few weeks ago, because I would’ve paid cash money to read their detailed evisceration of last night’s shambling monstrosity.

      • howdoilook

AGREED. I think they should come back and do an Olbermann-esque “Special Comment” on it.

        • formerlyAnon

“I think they should come back and do an Olbermann-esque “Special Comment” on it.”

But, we *like* TLo, and their blog. Why would we ask them to do something that would force them to watch such an episode?  Aside from inflicting misery and irritation, it might suck out their will to live, or at least to work, for a while, & it is we who would suffer.

          • Glammie

Uh-oh, that bad?  Haven’t seen it yet, but I’m trying to make it to the end of the season.  But every week, it’s a matter of thinking–wow, some of the musical performances are AMAZING and then having to deal with the horrors of the plot lines and character devel–destruction.

      • Oh god last night. I only saw the songs, but Cell block tango was in such bad taste I think I vomited a little in my mouth.

        • In_Stitches

That was actually the point.  I’m all for jumping on the Glee hating bandwagon, but the past two episodes haven’t been the travesties I’ve come to expect from the ill advised PSA with songs that the show has turned into.

          • zmayhem

ITA that that was the point they intended, but they really hadn’t earned it; the PSA-ness was so ham-handed and clumsy and ill-fitting that the “Look how much the girls don’t understand what they’re being asked to do” thing they were aiming at was totally undercut by the “Look how much the people making this show have no idea what they’re asking themselves to do” meta.

I cannot believe this woman used to write for the Buffyverse… no, actually, it’s Marni. Her I can believe. If Jane Espenson had written this episode I’d have to kill myself in despair; except that Jane Espenson would never, ever, ever have written this episode in the first place.

          • In_Stitches

I gotcha. I hear Jane’s writing for Once Upon a Time now. I haven’t given it a chance, but since she’s attached maybe I’ll have to.

          • zmayhem

Well, damn. I was fine with skipping Once Upon a Time, but if Jane is writing for it then I probably need to add it to the Tivo queue.

          •  Could someone PLEASE tell me why Quinn keeps vanishing for an episode, then reappearing, then vanishing? (and soooo glad that Kurt did not do ‘Phantom’ (that tenor voice…ick))

        • Oh, WOW. That does sound bad. Luckily, Hulu has a one-week delay, so by the time it’s online, I’ve usually stopped wanting to see it. Last week’s is up; debating watching that.

          • Glammie

            Last week’s isn’t terrible/terrible.  I recall a couple of good numbers . . .

          • Terence Ng

I thought all the numbers were terrible, except for the first. The storyline for Blaine and Kurt was so terrible, I think it gave me cancer.

          • Glammie

Maybe I’m just thinking of the first–no, no, I also always like seeing Heather Morris dance.  Right now, I want to see Heather dance and Amber sing.  Harry Shum can dance too.

And, yes, Kurt/Blaine storyline was awful.  It’s fucking treacly.  Break them up and send them out-of-state.  I think the worst thing that ever happened to Glee is that Darren Criss became a break-out star and the show began to completely cater to the tween fan base.  Kurt used to be a great character–I think–it was a long time ago.

          • Terence Ng

I think we need to be best friends. Best friends who hate Darren Criss-pandering.

          • Glammie

Besties if we can throw revulsion of those earnest godawful PSA storylines.  Only one I ever liked was Blame it on the Alcohol.

Just feel weirdly compelled to make it to graduation.

          • ampg

Haven’t seen this week’s yet, but I thought last week’s episode was nicely done, although I wish dreadlock-Jesus could act, since apparently they’re going to start featuring him in plot lines now.

          • Dreadlock Jesus is cute. I’ll probably check it out tomorrow. 🙂

          • I did end up watching last week’s. It was a pleasant enough way to spend laundry-folding hour. But the numbers were too cheesily staged.
I admit, I did like the Quinn/ Joe duet. It’s probably my favorite Whitney song (and therefore hard to touch), but the arrangement was nice.
But Will is such a douche, and all of the plotlines sucked.

      • Ted

Oh god, last night was one of the most painful and horrendous Television hours I’ve ever seen. Rachel’s crushing moment was great and for the first time since season 1, I actually felt something for this show, but the whole abuse storyline/Puck’s incredibly stupid story were unbearable.

        • Glammie

Now that I’ve seen it, you’ve described it well.  The Rachel storyline had some weight to it.  The Bieste line had me just cringing.  Ugh.

Of course, as someone who’s done a lot of singing auditions, it’s kind of unbelievable that Kurt nails an improvised performance and Rachel forgets *that* particular song.  But whatever . . .

      • lordandtaylor

No need for TLO to spend time on Glee…just post a few pic and let us go at it. The CHOKE episode was do major bad. This is one show that has jumped the shark. At least we got about 22 seconds of Harry dancing…and he sure looks great in his workout clothes.

        • Glammie

Jumped the shark? It’s been jumping entire pods. Hell, it’s been jumping entire populations.

    • RebeccaKW

I was thinking he looks like he’s a lost a bit of weight…he’s a bit gaunt.  Definitely looks pale.

    • lordandtaylor

He looked very tired during the show last night. Too much partying?

    • I think it’s something in the hair product/face moisturizer–it looks like he’s been sweating.

  • Sobaika Mirza

A sharp getup. He looks a bit.. tired, no?

  • LongTall_Sally

The suspenders don’t look ridiculous, but I think I would have liked his look just as much without them, perhaps a bit more.  They aren’t adding anything for me.  He does fill out a vest nicely!

    • JosephLamour

I think the white things on his sleeves corresponding with the white suspenders is very odd. Like, the angle and everything match.

      • Very “Toddler”. My 3 year old would rock that.

  • Sorry, hanging suspenders, even on him, is twee, and contrived. Use em, or lose em.  He is however, totally adorable looking, other than that.

    • mixedupfiles

It’s embellishment. All of fashion is contrived. What is a heel? Men work inside a very tiny box, comparatively, and there’s no reason on god’s green earth that they should.

I like the line of it; it echoes a wallet chain — which also, yes, stupid and contrived. It’s what we do, displaying to the world the contrivances that speak to what we want to portray.

      •  Just my own preference, of course.  I can’t abide lugging around stuff that isn’t actually doing anything.  As to the existence of heels. there is a fairly compelling historical argument about filth in the streets and heels and platforms being used to ameliorate that situation a bit.  But we will never REALLY know, the whys and wherefors of our own behaviors, will we?

      • Roman000

Totally agree with ya. So what if it’s contrived, if you can werq it then by all means go ahead and WERQ it.

    •  Contrived.  That is the absolutely perfect word to describe the suspenders.

  • Not a WERQ, but still a cutie.

He looks like he has a bad case of hangover-itis. That greasy hair isn’t helping. Poor thing, come to momma.

  • It would be a WERQ if he were naked from the waist up. But the outfit is nice here. Don’t like the hair though- did he come from out of the rain?

  • The suspenders don’t bother me so much here either, but that greasy, messy hair has got to go.

  • nannypoo

I’d like it better without the suspenders, but he can wear whatever he wants and still be adorable.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The things I would do to him…

    • sagecreek

Get in line right behind me, missy!

      • lordandtaylor

  • Dan_In_NYC

Not feeling the hair, but major snaps for rocking a band collar, which I normally loathe.  He looks great, and I would love to wear that outfit.

  • ICFashionChic

I love me some Harry Shum but he does look a little sickly and a bit skinnier than usual. The outfit is totally cute on him though. He has a way of making the newsie thing cute!

  • Snailstsichr

Since I’ve given up on Glee, can I assume this was a tribute to Newsies being  nominated for Tonys?  That is my fantasy anyway.

  • Judy_J

Cute as a bug, but I don’t really dig the hanging suspenders.  Other than that, perfect.

  • formerlyAnon

He is cute. And his clothes always fit him.

  • Lilithcat

    No.  Just no.

Hanging suspenders only work while in the process of dressing and undressing.  And brown shoes with charcoal trousers?!?!?  No way that works, much less “werqs”.  Hate the striped shirt with the tweedy vest; it might not be so bad if it weren’t for the big dark patches at the vest’s shoulders.

Neck up, cute as a bug’s ear.
Neck down, go home and change.

    • Spicytomato1

My husband has taken to wearing brown shoes with black and gray pants…when I balked he said he swears that’s what people are doing in the major metropolis where he spends his workdays (while I have no clue anymore, working from home in suburbia).

But I suppose he could tell me anything, such as they’re all wearing hanging suspenders, too, and I wouldn’t have a clue if it was a legit trend or not.

  • marishka1

Now that his “Glee” character is graduating, is Harry auditioning for “Newsies” on Broadway?

  • CassandraMortmain

Love it.  He really knows how to dress and never looks anything but totally chic.  But the hair – no.  Was it a reference to the hair gel moment from last night’s show?  And speaking of, what a travesty that was.  I don’t think a show has ever jumped the shark as badly as Glee has.

  • bluefish

South Park did a great little parody of Glee some weeks ago — one of its roving musical extravaganzas, I mean.  He looks sweaty — like maybe all the doh-dahs hanging off him are causing him to overheat.  Not wild about the tabs on his sleeves and the suspenders — droopy drawers.

  • SpcilK

    Very cute and stylish.

  • MilaXX

I don’t like what he did to his hair, bit he looks nice.

  • He looks extremely pale and his hair looks dirty, if I didn’t know better, I say he had shock indicators, lol. Outfit is super cute, though.

  • Lina_bee

Oh, the suspenders are ridiculous, but they work in terms of the costumey look he’s presenting. Maybe there’s a role in an early 20th century period piece he’s trying to nab? If so, I hope he gets it.

  • kingderella

    hes just adorable, isnt he?
    his hair is overdone, though.

  • lordandtaylor

Don’t tell me the new musical NEWSIES is already influencing fashion. Vests? Tab collar shirts? Harry look good…make that REAL good. The suspenders” Umm, leave them at home next time.

Please note that Harry wears his shoes shined. Good boy!

  • boweryboy

The hanging suspenders look is still pretentious.

    Otherwise he looks great.

  • Beardslee

Those unneccsary  suspenders make him look like a stylist’s dress up doll instead of a man in charge of what he wears.  And it is too bad because he is so good looking he doesn’t need superfluity.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Don’t love his hair here but he still looks adorable. I think he could wear pretty much anything and look good though. I also can’t believe that man is 30… he’s got some damn good genes!

    • dawnboo

He’s 30?  Wow!  That makes my thoughts about how hot he is far less creepy! ; )

  • Sunshine16

Um, cutey?  Lose the suspenders, wash your hair & then come back!

  • Too much styling crap in his hair.

  • He is so freakin’ adorable. Even better looking in person too…and has gorgeous skin to boot 🙂

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i dont understand the hanging suspenders business, i dont think i ever did, but i do like that we are getting more asian actors.

  • The vest’s fit is off, the trousers too puffy, the shoes clunky and the suspenders out of place. No bueno.

  • giiiirrrr

    My, he’s adorable.

  • This cutie always nails it!  I love his style.

  • I have rid my life of all things Glee, but I can’t really stop loving Harry Shum Jr. Look at this cutie pie.

  • Spicytomato1

Love the look! I just saw a concert by pre-teen and teen jazz musicians last night (99% male) and they could use some pointers from Harry. With a couple stylish exceptions, ill-fitting khakis and dad ties abounded…too bad because they sure knew how to swing.

  • Offbalance

Was he on a break from the L.A. cast of Newsies or something?

  • Susan Crawford

SOmewhere there is a crumpled parachute dragging behind him, no?

  • Amy Ellinger

RE: him looking tired, maybe a bit sick.

on his Twitter (i know, I know) he did mention that he’s been working 24/7 and is exhausted.  Unfortunate that it showed here, he looks adorable otherwise.

  • shopgirl716

Can’t get past the suspenders.  Nope, can’t do it.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Really?  I love Harry Shum Jr., but this outfit – the suspenders, the shirt with the built-in roll-your-sleeves up holders, the greasy too-much-product hair – just isn’t cutting it for me.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Agreed – no pass from me on this one.  I’d give it an OUT.  No way a WERQ.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Not to sound irreverent (too late!), but you guys should have your gay card revoked for handing out a WERQ for such hair. Come on, guys! Off your game, were you?

  • Guess they’re contrasted by the thing-a-ma-jigs on his sleeves.  I’m just not feeling it though.

  • GTrain

Love him, hate that hair. Agree the outfit is cute; few could pull it off.

  • jcolli69

No, his eyes do look really tired. Working too much and not resting enough?

  • TieDye64

Overall he’s looking pretty cute. Lighten up on the hair product, son. And get some sleep!

  • DAMN, son.

  • guest2visits

I think he’s cute; and love everything he’s wearing; but I can’t abide sleeve-tabs for anyone.

  • ccm800

light not doing his complexion much favor but he DO look SHARP!
