WERQ: Carey Mulligan in Prada

Posted on May 08, 2012

Like two fussy gay uncles, we just want to run up to Carey and hiss at her to stop making faces because she’s ruining her dress.

Carey Mulligan attends the Met Gala in a Prada dress and shoes paired with Neil Lane Jewelry.

Honey, never purse your lips in pictures. It’s a look that looks good on precisely no one. When you’re a star (and especially when you’re rocking the shit out of a gorgeous Prada dress like this), then you lock in one Stepford Wife expression and keep it locked in the entire time the flashes are going off, dear.

Still, you are WERQing the shit out of that dress, those shoes, and that hair, so we can forgive a lot. Snaps up, girl!  You look stunning!

But your face is gonna freeze like that someday and don’t come crying to us when it happens.

The dress looks great on her, but she looks incredibly uncomfortable.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BMEASIKJSVE6YP3DE2VLJA5CUU JulieJ

Having worn a sleeveless dress with similiar paillettes, she probably is…those things cut you to ribbons.

      • ballerinawithagun

Yes, I think she is in agony! Can you imagine the limo ride??? Trying to keep the paillettes from folding in half under your butt…scratching at you everywhere…telling your date to keep his distance, while he is laughing at you. She is usually so cute!

        • Sobaika Mirza

Fashion is pain, darlings. Or so they tell me.

        • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

I also wondered if there was a protective casing for the limo ride. Or maybe she rode a Segway over. A stand-up mode of transportation would seem to be in order.

      • Scarlet39

Oh, very good point.  I was only thinking of uncomfortable as in she wasn’t sure it was ‘her dress”.

    • Carla_Charlton

REALLY uncomfortable!  However, I love the way the metallic fabric reflects on her face.  I think that some women would have ruled the dress out for that because it would distract from them.  But she really seems like she wants to make the dress the focal point and I think at the Met Gala, that’s completely appropriate.  Do not like the platform pumps.

  • Sobaika Mirza

    EVERYBODY ELSE GO HOME.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1313126032 Ajuna Ariel Fenty

and give Prada a ring, “what the hell were you thinking designing a disco ball?”

  • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

Ugh, hate the dress, hate the dippity-do hairstyle….don’t get me wrong I love CM in Prada (hello 2010 Oscars) but this is so not doing it for me.

  • nannypoo

I don’t like this dress nearly as much as you boys do. In fact, I hate it. But I totally agree about the lemon sucking face. I never understand why someone who is so uncomfortable in front of a camera that they make that face would choose to be an actor. Did she not realize there would be photography involved? She actually looks cute when she smiles, and I love the hair.

    • carolynmo

She looks a thousand times more relaxed in front of cameras than Kristen Stewart. That girl . . . .

      • regina arthur

Predictable…the topic is Carey Mulligan and her Prada dress, not Kristen Stewart.  Carey looks gorgeous.  I especially love the back of the dress.

        • alyce1213

I do believe this is an open forum, and comparison to anyone else should not be such a problem for you.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

That is one helluva lot of shiny in one place. But Man-o-man does she look
    Ah May Zing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I kinda love the disco ball effect on her face and arms… But I am a magpie at heart, gimme shiny! I wish I could go check out that exhibit, those Vogue pictures look wonderful!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

Ooh, I love it, she looks like a fancy fish right before the prom.

  • Miss_Led

I don’t like the reflections on her face.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

They are very, very unfortunate. Especially in that first pic. Yikes.

    • sweetestsith

Without the flash its probably very pretty – sequins and rhinestones near the face can throw light on your features and really highlight them in a slightly loud “hey! my face is pretty! look at me!” way, but they don’t tend to photograph very well.

Or so the dancers keep telling me. :P

      • Flooby

It makes me feel like the dress is wearing her- not the other way around.  A look I’m not a fan of.  Imagine if someone with more stones- say Liz Taylor, Helen Mirren or Charlize Theron – was wearing this- we’d probably never even notice the reflections because the woman would be so stunning.  I would have given this a “oh honey that’s not your dress.”

  • carolynmo

I’m so glad you chose this!  I just loved it.  She looks like Thor’s little sister. She came along to help him save Earth, then stuck around for the Met Gala.

  • http://6things.blogspot.com par3182

When a dress casts reflections that make you look like you have a rare skin disease, please reconsider said (ugly) dress.

  • bluefish

What’s going on at Prada?  The dress is a monster.  She’s such a cutie pie — what a pity.  Really ugly look.

  • miagain

That’s a “standing around with a drink in your hands” kinda dress.  How would you ever sit down??

  • http://profiles.google.com/amanda.leigh.albert Amanda Albert

Whenever i see her, I can only think, “Don’t blink. Blink and you’re dead. They are fast. Faster than you can believe. Don’t turn your back. Don’t look away. And don’t blink. Good Luck.”

    • JasmineAM

I don’t watch Doctor Who, but I’ve seen that scene and it SO creepy.

  • deathandthestrawberry

I love this dress. I’m not sure, however, if she is the right ladystar to pull it off. She doesn’t quite have the sass for it.

    • amf0001

that’s exactly what I was thinking… that dress is wearing her, not she wearing it…

      • sweetestsith

I’d like to see Sofia Vergara try it… Its body-con enough for her (I think), and she has the confidence to pull of all the glitz.

That said, I do actually like it on Carey. ::shrug:: Its interesting.

  • janetjb

Prada loves Carey more than Gweneth.

Faboulous dress. I can’t imagine how she could do anything but stand there while wearing it.

  • gabbilevy

Her eyes are incredible, full stop. Also, she looks amAHzing.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I think that was the look Gwyneth was going for and missed.

  • chelwi

Love the dress! She looks gorgeous. My only complaint is I’m not a fan of the nude lip.

    • MissAnnieRN

agree – this dress needed a bolder lip – especially with all the light it’s throwing onto her face.

  • lordandtaylor

I love when celebs wear the glittery, shiny mirror ball of dresses. Love the color casts on the face and all little reflections. It is comedy gold. Jenny Lopez is another who insists on mirror ball outfits.

  • Judy_J

My only critique is the way the light reflects off the dress and on to her face.  She really should smile more often….she has a beautiful smile!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Deborah-Jozayt/100002949685297 Deborah Jozayt

Is it me or does this dress make her hair look super brassy?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I can’t get behind this. It’s oddly reptilian, and is making weird reflections on her chin.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      I second that.

  • Vaniljekjeks

That’s one of the things almost ruining this look… her face is so tense and she is doing weird things with it.  WERQ that shiny dress, don’t make fidgets with your face.  Relax.  You are stunning.

  • Lina_bee

OMG, it’s so 1965, I love it! Go Prada!

  • SusiePamudji

    LOVE!

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I really miss her Sally Sparrow hair.

  • IAmDisappoint

Hideous. Looks like an ice capades reject costume.

  • Calinda_L

This is the dress Gwyneth Paltrow wishes she were wearing (although I don’t think she’d pull it off nearly as well as Miss Thang here).

  • Kayceed

I love paillettes more than most, but I’m not feeling this dress. I think an ombre effect would have been beautiful – but straight gold then straight silver looks odd to me. Also, paillettes bend when you sit on them, believe me. Am wondering how she was transported, or perhaps just lifted up the entire skirt around her in the car?

  • Pennymac

Shocked at the TLo designation of WERQ! I dispise everything about this look. *ducks head*

    • alyce1213

Don’t duck your head.  You’re right.

  • Anathema_Device

Her smiling, laughing pic makes up for the “just sucked a lemon” ones. If you had told me she would look good in a dress like this, I wouldn’t have believed it. But, wow, she can rock the disco fish scales. And no side boob! Yay!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=558631967 Ivona Foster

    Fabulous!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

She looks god-awful.  I would put this in “Girl this is not your dress/hair/make-up”.   Nothing is right here.  She would look better if she just show up in her pajamas straight from rolling out of the bed.

And somehow she looks mighty old for her age.  I swear if I didn’t know who she is, I would thought she’s older than Charlize Theron.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1313126032 Ajuna Ariel Fenty

WERQ? for this? really? she looks like a disco ball and what’s up with her skin? eeek! Girl, bye! This is a MAJOR OUT!!!

  • kingderella

wearing armor on the red carpet! fabulous!

  • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

It looks like the problem here is with the reflections the paillettes are throwing up to her face, which are fighting with the nude lip. A slightly stronger lip colour would have helped SO much..

  • twocee

A disco ball crossed with a giant fish.  And it sorta reminds me of chain mail for some reason.

  • RebeccaKW

I like the dress, but I am not sold on the shoes.  I’m fine with a metallic color, but maybe not a satiny finish.

    • Alisa Rivera

      The shoes look bridal. Hideous.

  • TSkot

Hair and make-up are dazzling, but what an UGLY dress!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tessie-Bee/100002109821232 Tessie Bee

love love love this dress and would kill to see it on someone with a bit more of a stage presence (Not that CM isn’t a cute little button but she doesn’t have the gravitas of say Cate Blanchette or a professional model, and I feel this dress needs some gravitas and panache to mitigate the discoball effect)

    • Spicytomato1

Agreed. It’s a really beautiful dress but made for a serious fashionista. And I disagree with T Lo on Carey’s hair, I think it’s the wrong style for this dress.

  • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

I would have loved a little lashing of a slightly darker pink lipstick. Just to give her face some MUCH needed colour. But this dress was probably one of my favourites of the night.

  • JimMcC

HOLY JEEBUS! Bow down, bitches. She turned. It. Out. Absolutely exquisite.

  • http://twitter.com/sarahsayssoo Sarah

love the dress but I wish her lip had a little more color and that those ugly shoes had been burned

  • Kristy Evans

Serving up C-3PO/Aquaman love-child couture realness.

I really wish she has some lipstick on, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Metallic Fembot. I’m on the fence on this one.

  • http://promiscuouslola.blogspot.com/ Cate

hmm… I only like it from the waist up. waist down, the illusion is lost on me.

  • Call me Bee

I love her hair so much better than her pixie look of late.  It’s perfect, long with the stunning dress and shoes.  But–am I missing something?  I see no jewelry as mentioned in your post…
Of course, with that dress, none is really needed…

  • http://twitter.com/jessicapippin Jessica Pippin

I really hate the shoes. The hair is interesting. Looks better from certain angles.

  • mjude

did the dress just not photograph well?  just not sure…

  • susu11

I LOVE this dress on her. I’m glad she didn’t go the twee route. When I first saw the top picture though I thought something had happened to her face until I realized that it was the reflection off the sequins making her face look splotchy :p Her pursed lips/pained expression in that photo didn’t help either. I agree with TLo, You’re wearing a fabulous dress at the Met Ball, pursing your lips shouldn’t even cross your mind, Carey. Savor it!

  • MilaXX

    Loved this!

  • BazoDee

Ahmm – I’m not on board here. Although I do love it from behind. I think it is the copper/gold/silver ombre approach that is killing it for me.

  • Susan Crawford

What a DRESS! Zowie – this is  a major win.

  • fungstyle

eek. werq is not how i would describe this. maybe if she had some color on her face, but as it is she looks like a strung out go-go dancer to me. and that hair i do not like.

  • granddelusion

She looks really uncomfortable, as would most people if they were covered in fish scales. The reflection on her face are also disconcerting.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I really hate this dress. So fugly. Definitely not a WERQ.

  • NurseEllen

She looks stunning but I am confused.  I see a jewelry credit but no jewelry, save for what looks like a wedding ring.  Am I missing something?  I bet those “scales” itch like stink where they catch on her bare skin, esp. around the arms & top of the neckline.  But you have to suffer to be beautiful!

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

Her eyes really pop with this dress. I like it although she does look uneasy.

  • marilyn

The fish scale dress is not for her.  She is too pasty and conventional looking to carry  it off  Scarlet39 is right-she looks uncomfortable in it.  I think that someone with more exotic looks could have carried it off.  On her, it just looks like a mismatch. It might have helped if the dress had been floor length. Leaving it knee length makes is seem unfinished.

  • KathKo

OK, am I the only one seeing the silly girl bot in Spaceballs ?
I’m sorry, but she just look silly in that dress.

  • kimmeister

She needed a non-nude lip color.

    • poggi

I agree.  A little more color would have made the face better and stopped her lips from fading away.

  • SpcilK

I’m at a loss for words.

  • Rebecca Jay

All that makeup caked on her face, that horrid hair.. color and style.. and too much dress AND shoe for this wisp of a girl.

What a cute big smile, though!

  • TheOriginalLulu

I don’t really think that hairstyle is her friend (nor is the pursed lips thing), but the dress is kind of awesome and it looks great on her.

  • Trisha26

I don’t like these super-metallic dresses in flash photos – the reflected lights make the wearer look like they’re underwater. Fishy!

  • egl48

    She is such a doll.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183772509 Jen Hughes

That is gorgeous. I do feel like she needed at least a little color on her face so that she’s not one big column of bronze/blonde.

  • MoHub

    Smile, darn you, smile!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJHCEFC7S5WYITH3D5ORYGS56I amye

Actually I don’t think she’s WERQ’g it at all.  It looks good on her, but like Scarlett says, she looks uncomfortable.

  • alyce1213

    WERQ?  Naw.
    Goldfish.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

    not werqing it.  NOT.

  • unbornfawn

If you can’t smile when you look that good, in a dress that fits perfectly and is fun as hell, when can you smile?

  • lilibetp

That’s what Gwynneth’s dress wishes it was.

  • Jangle57

This is a WERQ????????????   Maybe it was because when I first saw this dress, it was on another site, next to a shot of Jessica Alba at the same event, who did look amazing.  This just looked like uncomfortable metallic fish scales to me with an ugly hairdo.  This outfit is an ‘out of WERQ’ for me…..

  • librarygrrl64

Can it be a WERQ if the makeup is bad? The eyes look fine, but she’s too shiny and the lips are too pale.

  • joe_tey83

Seriously, this is a WERQ?! It’s like a bad bridesmaid dress from Aquaman land.

  • EEKstl

    Gee, Fellas, I don’t know…

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I think the dress looks cool, and the back is beautiful, but I still have a lot of issues with the overall look. It is pretty unflattering in the stomach area, and the shoes are awful.  Also, she needs some lipstick and the color of her hair doesn’t look good with the gold.

  • TheOtherChristina

Love the dress, but I’m not feeling the hair and that is some uncommonly terrible makeup.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3GXKZ3BMJXBO7BJ26T3AP7QHNU Hildy910

I must respectfully disagree that this is a WERQ.  The dress itself isn’t my favorite–I don’t like how the hem seems to flare, plus the entire skirt looks stiff and the bodice makes her boobs look a bit saggy and inclined to flee to her armpits.  However, said dress  would probably look much better on somebody who was happy to be wearing it.  She just looks miserable, and if she can’t own the dress, it will own her.  Also, her makeup looks very washed out, and her hair doesn’t go with the dress at all.

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

That is easily the most mesmerizing fish dress I’ve ever seen.

  • jw_ny

She looks stunning!  I’d never have thought she’d be able to pull of a metallic dress like this, but she is.  It fits her like a dream.  I like her hair…elegant.  Shoes…eh, but I have no suggestions so can’t complain.  I’m curious as to how easily it was to sit in this… ;)

  • Maddie_Faddenoid

I think she looks like C3PO’s wife, and I mean that in an uncomplimetary way.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t like her makeup at all, though. She needs something a little less vague to keep up with the high-wattage dress. This way, it’s all Artificial Intelligence (the Spielberg movie).

  • ccm800

You guys are suckers for sparkly! LOL Nah – jk – she looks great.

  • cleep1000

I’m not feeling it. The dress is so much prettier from the back, where the metallics are mixed. From the front, just looks stiff and reminds me of a fish market. She needs some color on that face, too.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Makeup is awful, that shade of blonde doesn’t remotely suit her, and by her expression I’d guess that the scales were slowly sawing off her nipples.

It looks amazing from the back.

  • Candigirl1968

Amazing (and probably heavy AND painful).

  • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

    Ugh.

  • greatscoutm

    That dress is fab.

  • http://twitter.com/ClairRose483 Clair Ellis

Why isn’t she wearing any earrings? Not even simple diamond studs? She is stunning though.

  • PeaceBang

Not working for me. She looks like Ariel’s slutty older sister who got her legs, made it to land, and is now working as a madame in a mermaid-themed whorehouse.

  • mom2ab

Renee Zellweger called and she wants her face back…

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’d probably be making that face with all the crazy screaming photogs yelling at me – that red carpet live feed was MADNESS.  Epic WERQ regardless.

  • Gorengirl

    J’adore!

  • Qitkat

I didn’t even recognize sweet Carey until the final two pictures.
And I’m confused as to the actual color of this crazy stunning dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=683120322 Mylynka Kilgore Cardona

Sorry Dear Uncles,  I hate this, too! :(  And she looks so pale, like she is ill.  Her foundation looks to pale and the lipstick makes her look sickly.  Not a WERQ.  Not even a werq…

  • Stubenville

Ugh. Las Vegas lounge hostess wear.

  • MoreShoes

She looks like a disco ball.

  • KittenBritches

She is nowhere near fabulous enough for this dress.  The dress is wearing her.

  • Zippypie

Her face looks like that after having to sit on that skirt on the way to the MET.

  • formerlyAnon

This dress is a beautiful piece of work. But she looks as if she was costumed for a comic book-inspired movie, not like a beautiful woman in a beautiful dress. So I can’t get enthused.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

You know, she does look fabulous here.  Last night, I passed this over.  I can’t give her a WERQ because she’s simply not selling it.

  • Peeve

Love, love, love the dress (I have a paillettes fetish), but I can’t help but think it would have looked better with darker hair.

  • Peeve

Love, love, love the dress (I have a paillettes fetish), but I can’t help but think it would have looked better with darker hair.

  • eight_of_nine

Love the hair and makeup, but the dress is just blinding me.

  • mayavaly

This would have been so perfect for the Audrey-bot, no?

  • http://www.facebook.com/adamcatkinson Adam Atkinson

Excuse me, pardon me, caveat coming through! Doesn’t Michelle Obama *occasionally* look good with pursed lips?

    • http://www.facebook.com/adamcatkinson Adam Atkinson

Oh and agreed, this dress/hair combo is NUTS werqing.

  • Sophie Collier

Really, guys?  You’re okay with the  Bob’s Big Boy hairdo?  Her head looks like a Kewpie doll.  That dress is disco glam and that head is not.  Almost a WERQ but I think you have been too generous here.

  • Sophie Collier

Really, guys?  You’re okay with the  Bob’s Big Boy hairdo?  Her head looks like a Kewpie doll.  That dress is disco glam and that head is not.  Almost a WERQ but I think you have been too generous here.

  • quiltrx

That’s a great dress.  Her face makes me think it is digging in in unpleasant places, though.

  • Judih1

she looks like she is covered in fish scales. not an attractive look – even if it is Prada

  • Truthiness2U

I think it’s an interesting concept, but overall I find it ugly, and not flattering to even someone as pretty and skinny as Carey. And it’s certainly overwhelming Carey here, she looks miserable and the dress is wearing her.

  • Cousin_Rose

Looks like a winner for the odd materials challenge. I do love the look though.

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

Can’t understand why one would want to dress like a trout, but whatever.

  • Emily Scott

That dress is the very definition of fierce.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

So much prettier when she smiles!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

When you hiss at her to stop making the face, could you remind her that nude lips means the color of your lips without lipstick, not the color of your face?

  • sononagal

Seriously?  This is a WERQ???  No no no no no.  It looks like a science project – maybe a model of an Apollo lunar module after going through Earth’s atmosphere.  And no one should wear a dress that reflects on your face like a Studio 54 disco ball.
