Cannes Watch: Reese Witherspoon in Versace

Posted on May 29, 2012

Reese still tops our Irrational Celebrity Hate List, but we’ve gotta give the girl some props. Lately, she’s been killing it with the maternity looks and offering a Master Class on how the prego ladystar should dress for public appearances.

Reese Witherspoon attends “Mud” Photocall during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Versace dress paired with Manolo Blahnik pumps.

Brava, darling. We don’t love the way the ruching forms a sash that runs across her body like a strap, but the effect is subtle and it’s really the only thing we can work up a complaint over. The rest of the look is dead-perfect. She looks sweet, comfortable, and stylish.

And can we just say how refreshing it is to see a pair of open-toed shoes WITHOUT a wedge of two-by-four glued to the sole? Were so very tired of the platform shoes that we practically squeal in delight when someone wears something delicate and pretty on their feet. Well done, girl.

The shoes are cute, but everytime I look at the dress I’m like, “Why is she wearing a messenger bag at Cannes?”

    • mshesterp

Yeah, the strap (and not just a seam) of ruching aggravates me, but in general I think she looks good, she just didn’t need that design element.

YES to the strappy sandals sans platform.  Those look perfect on her.  There are very few platforms I can get behind, regardless of whether the dress is long or short.

      Pregnancy looks great on her.

  • You need to re-watch Legally Blond and then decide if you still irrationally hate her.

  • She does pregnancy well.

    • filmcricket

She’s one of those celebrities who should always be “a little pregnant.” It softens her face and makes her glow. And whether she is or not, she manages to look happy and comfortable (remember how miserable Natalie Portman looked throughout her it-felt-like-12-months pregnancy?)

      • LuisaNL

I was just noticing how much prettier she looks with the extra pregnancy weight!

  • She looks happy. There is nothing prettier than happy.

    • anotherkate

       Hear, hear!

  • Joan Holloway pregnancy realness. Superb.

    • It’s totally a ‘Joan’ dress, if Joan made it to the 90’s (maybe not a summer dress, but still cute).

  • I appreciate the way ruching is more forgiving to large curves, especially if they’re temporary and you’re not used to wrangling them, but the diagonal strap is pulling the neckline out of whack and making my OCD tingle.  There has to be a better way to do that.

  • Maria Rosenfire

Delicate shoes may be cuter to some people, but they’re infinitely less comfortable than stuff with a wider heel. I would never wear a shoe like that if I was pregnant, so… good on her I guess.

I love the dress– she’s doing pregnancy right. And how!

    • MilaXX

I had exactly one friend who wore her stilettos up to her 8th mth. I asked her how and she said she was lucky not to have feet swelling until then.

      • Jessica Goldstein

I didn’t wear stilettos, but I did wear narrow, 3 1/2 inch heels about a week before delivering. My feet didn’t change at all, so it wasn’t a big deal. Now, 5 1/2 years later, my aging feet won’t let me anymore. Sigh.

        • MilaXX

I guess for some women it is possible

    •  I agree entirely. I pretty much almost never wear heels that don’t have some kind of platform to them. Mom never made me “learn” how to wear them and I despise them. The fact that I have a 26 year old coworker who literally can’t wear flats because their mom made her wear heels from a young age is ridiculous.

I love ya T.Lo. but I’ll take not ruining my feet over cute any day.

      •  That’s okay. We don’t care what you wear.

        • Calling you jelly cuz y’all on a roll this morning with replies! 🙂

    •  I may be wrong, but I don’t think that T&L were criticizing wider heels, they were criticizing platforms.  Major difference!  Platform shoes will never NOT look trashy and stripper-esque to me.

I love how she doesn’t need to do the “just in case you forgot I’m pregnant, I swear I didn’t just chub out” pose.

    • This.  I was so grateful that there wasn’t a picture with her hand holding the bottom of her baby bump.

  • MilaXX

Bravo Reese. She serving up some Joan realness. In fact, this is a look that would work for Christina Hendricks. Loving the Manolos both Reese and Nicole are wearing today.

  • I don’t particularly like her either. Honestly, used to love her. Those shoes are 100% Elle Woods.

    • j_anson

They ARE! It’s her signature color!

    • LOL! That’s exactly what I thought! I must say I hate that dress; she looks like a vase wrapped in black plastic. But that’s just me. Good for her that she does look really happy and at ease.

  • egl48

    She’s glowing.

  • Lina_bee

I’d dubious about the dress, but otherwise she looks fabulous.

    • I just think the long sleeves are a bit much for Cannes in late May!

    • I just think the long sleeves are a bit much for Cannes in late May!

  • RebeccaKW

I know it’s a maternity dress, but I would love to see Christina Hendricks in a version of this.

Reese does look look amazing.  And I love that her pose is not ‘see this pregnancy belly!?  it’s a baby, not Cheetos and beer!”

  • DaringMiss

I think the dress is a miss.  It looks too hot and heavy for summer in the south of France.  The ruching is dreadful and makes it look cheap.

    But her makeup is delightful!

  • AWS

    Lovely.  Killer shoes.  Brava indeed…

  • Spicytomato1

She looks fab and fresh. Not an easy feat when you’re pregnant and so far from the comforts of home. And I like her hairstyle. It’s refined yet casual but not gym hair. Also not an easy feat, pregnant or not.

  • IAmJ

    The shoes are KILLA.

  • janetjb

  • TheOriginalLulu

She looks adorable. Pregnancy certainly agrees with her, because she looks fresh, pretty and happy. Love the casual hair and makeup.

  • StellaZafella

In these pics, at least, she reminds me of the shapes men used to fall over like Deanna Doors (sic), Lana Turner, even M. Monroe.
    Joyfully voluptuous.

    • Honey, men still do fall all over women with bodies like that!

      • rawrgrowlrawr

Yes, luckily men are like women in that they appreciate people of all shapes and sizes.

  • GTrain

She looks great. LOVE the shoes.

  • She looks so happy that she is glowing! My only qualm with her outfit is with the width of the heel on her shoes. I get that she’s pregnant and wants to wear pretty things, but a wider heel would definitely make me less nervous that she’ll lose her balance or twist her ankle!

  • Angela Martin

    I want those shoes!

  • StelledelMare

I’ve always disliked platform shoes. They always seemed so unnecessary. But she looks great.

  • marilyn

    Very elegant and pretty.

  • Judy_J

Now THAT”S how a clingy pregnancy dress is done!  All the fashion-challenged pregnant ladies need to take a lesson from Ms Witherspoon.  And those shoes are just perfect.  Love the color and design.  And best of all?….They FIT!

  • And lets give credit for the length of the dress. Does a dress ever really need to be any shorter? Why do you have an irrational hate for her? So many other more worthy people for that sort of thing.

  • rainwood1

I hate platform shoes.  They look and sound so clunky.  Reese, on the other hand, looks lovely.

  • She’s always looked best while pregnant, IMO. It softens her face in a really lovely way.

And those shoes are TOTALLY Elle Woods, which pleases me beyond belief.

  • HeatherMcIlrath

i agree completely! finally someone is wearing shoes without a platform the height of mount everest! and they aren’t jimmy choos! halleloo!

  • claudemtl777

I share your irrational dislike of RW…I think it stems from the fact that she has an Oscar and Gena Rowlands, Judy Davis and Joan Allen don’t…I know, I know…Hate the game, not the player….

    • alyce1213

I don’t share irrational hate for Reese, as here are others far more worthy (or unworthy?).  For example, Melanie Griffith’s Oscar??
I do share your appreciation for the truly great actresses named: Gena Rowlands, Judy Davis, and Joan Allen (my personal fave) are as good as they get.

      • AnaRoW

Melanie Griffith doesn’t have an Oscar. She was nominated though.

Reese, in my opinion, is a great actor. I think the problem is that it was Legally Blonde that made her a household name, which makes her come across like an actress of limited range like Julia Roberts.

        • alyce1213

True, you’re right — it was the Golden Globe.  I guess I’m still so pissed of about her Oscar nomination that it’s almost as bad as if she’d won.

Agreed on Reese, I like her  — unlike the highly overrated Julia Roberts.

  • Snailstsichr

She is starting to come off my irrational dislike list. Pregnancy certainly agrees with her.

  • charlotte

I like this dress, but every time I look at it the strap makes me search for a bag that is not there.

  • bluefish

Very chic — love the hot pink lady shoes.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Very cute look. Reese reminds me of a former co-worker who was always beautifully turned out during her four pregnancies, including 3 inch heels!

  • mom2ab

The dress seems kind of heavy for cannes and not loving what it does to her hips.  The shoes are lovely and appropriate but not with that dress.

  • sleepycat

I really think she looks like Jessica Simpson in this picture, but I don’t mean that to be a negative. I think she looks great, although the design of the sandals are a bit frumpy.

  • .

If I didn’t know better, I wouldn’t have even guessed she was pregnant!

  • My only complaint is that the dress looks a bit too dark and wintery for Cannes in the Spring/Summer, but it looks good on her, and I love the shoes.

  • unbornfawn

Well earned praise to the shoes. At first I thought she had some big ass bag slung over her chest. She looks happy.

  • 3boysful

The shoes are cute, but as a mom of three, my lower back aches for hers!

  • guest2visits

Can’t say I like this at all.  I hate ruching and this is very bad; what is the purpose of stretching the material to tautness and
then puckering the fabric to give the illusion of what, looseness ? This is ugly in my book, it’s pulled and squished in all the
wrong ways. Even without the rushing this dress wouldn’t appeal to me; the neck is too wide, and I feel the material would
make a better top, as opposed to a dress.  Reese herself is beautiful; and I like the shoes.

  • TieDye64

Agree that the band running down/across the dress is distracting, but other than that she looks beautiful. YAY for the pretty shoes!

  • MzzPants

Pregnancy A+!  Now, go have a Nutri-Grain and take a nap, dear.

  • Totally thought she was wearing a messenger bag too!  Love the shoes!

  • Wellworn

I agree that platform shoes are clunky and ugly but I also think that stilletos are torture.  Women wear those platforms so they have the high heel without the steep drop from heel to toe.  I wish high heels would go out of style just to save women from that pain.  I actually don’t wear heels at all.  I’m a flat footed old lady and I don’t want to fall and break a hip.

  • Call me Bee

Reese looks great!  So totally agree about the shoes–feminine and pretty, and a perfect color for a simple black frock.  My only complaint is that the dress seems a bit heavy for late May.  But a small quibble.  RW looks cute beyond compare.

  • cleep1000

I have to disagree. I realize she’s pregnant, but that sash is pushing her left boob down and to the side, and the neckline and proportions seem off…giving her very broad shoulders. Maybe weight gain from the pregnancy, which is understandable, but I can’t help but feel that a v-neck would be much more flattering and slimming to her upper body.

  • BradWatson

Now, I’m no Reese fan either – but she seems so much less, shall we say, serrated, than she always seemed before.  Babies. Who knew?

  • P M

Ya know, I wish to God that she would just embrace her bitchy side and go for evil female roles. Hell, even help write something original in the genre of bitch. The woman’s got drive, one doesn’t mess with her, etc etc.
Reese, stop acting nice. You dont’ need to act needlessly nice anymore.

  • afabulous50

Personally I really like her, so I don’t understand the hate – irrational or otherwise.  She’s always kept her dignity throughout the crush of stardom, and she acts & dresses age appropriate….unlike some other celebs…coughJLo…cough.  And, if all one can bash her about is the sash effect than that’s not too bad.

  • meowing

I wore more than my fair share of platforms in the 70s.  Can’t abide them now.  They make any shoe design look clunky and huge.

  • SapphoPoet

Don’t like the strap, but otherwise she looks glowing and comfortable.

  • Very cute.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

She looks fantastic, but you know what’s really crazy? To me, she doesn’t look pregnant. She just looks kind of “normal” sized. Like someone took a photos of a super chic size 10 or 12 woman. But anyway, brava.

  • BazoDee

No complaints -she looks lovely. I have a few minor quibbles but I declare late term pregnant women a quibble free zone.

  • leftcoastpickle

I am enjoying her Joan Harris Mad Men body.

  • guest2visits

In defense of platforms: I really hope that they will always stick around.  As a shorter person with tiny feet; they add just enough
in height to make a lot of clothing just fit much better. I also like that my feet aren’t 3mm off the dusty ground, funneling grime
between my foot and the shoe. The padding is usually more substancial, adding to comfort. The arch is less severe because the
front and back are slightly more in balance; so there is less strain. The platform shoes are usually more solidly built; there is less
    twist in the middle-arch portion of the shoe,  which is the major culprit for falls. Obviously, not all shoes are created equally;
some will be constructed poorly, whether platform or not.  And sometimes a platform shoe just won’t look as good as something
else might (like my wicked sharp pointy black heels I’ll never let go of, whether ‘in fashion’ or not). And some platforms are a mere
half-inch in height under the foot, not all are 3 inches of wood block.   ….. really people, can’t we all just get along…sing it now..
I hope you know I’m laughing.  Anyway, wearability is part of what I like about them, – I also like the way they look.

  • lordandtaylor

Love her. Love the look. I wish she was my BFF.

  • nancylee61

I love the black and pink. I hate the sash look. And is she pregnant, or did she have a baby? She doesn’t look pregnant, just wider than normal.

  • nancylee61

I love the black and pink. I hate the sash look. And is she pregnant, or did she have a baby? She doesn’t look pregnant, just wider than normal.

  • Srw27

She looks stunning.  LOVE the shoes!

  • Does anyone else freak out over pregnant women wearing pumps? I always worry that they’re going to fall over and hurt themselves and the bubba! (Completely irrational… I am aware of this!)

    • Same! Maybe it’s because I have all the grace and elegance of a drunk walrus on dry land.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

She looks lovely but that dress looks like it’s made of wool or something.  It looks hot.

  • kalisa

THANK YOU for saying that. So, SO tired of the tacky platforms. Maybe they’ll listen to you. x

  • glennethph

    Christina Hendricks as a blonde.

  • quiltrx

The bag-strap look is totally distracting.  It makes the dress look like it’s pulling…but maybe it is?  Might have needed next size up–doesn’t look comfortable.

  • she looks amazing!  and i really like the shoes.

  • Diego!

Those shoes are too much “Elle Woods” to my taste. OUT :p
