Pairs Division: Smith and Pinkett-Smith

Posted on May 09, 2012

Matchy-match couples! We thought everyone understood that this is a bad idea, but then again, we never realized properly hemmed pants or finding a pair of shoes that fit were difficult things to accomplish, until we became red carpet commenters.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith attend the “Men in Black 3″ Seoul premiere in Seoul. Jada Pinkett Smith wore a Giorgio Armani jumpsuit.

We will take no points off for their matchiness, but we will scowl and wag our fingers at them impotently.

HE: Looks pretty amazing. We don’t know if that jacket’s too small on him or if his sleeve somehow got shoved up, but you’re not supposed to be showing that much cuff. It also looks to us like the collar on his shirt is somehow too high on his neck. We’re not experts enough to peg what’s going wrong here, but there’s clearly a fit issue in his upper half. Still, the man is wearing a glen plaid suit with a pink shirt and pulling it the hell off, so we can’t be anything but supportive. Score: 9/10.

SHE: Also looks pretty overall amazing and also is displaying some questionable things that keep her from getting a perfect score (as if there was ever a chance of that). For one, this is a jumpsuit. A sparkly pink jumpsuit. For another, the top kinda hangs on her and even though we know the addition of one would not be a good idea here, we keep thinking she needs a belt. At the end of the day, this is what it is: a pink, sparkly, harem-panted jumpsuit. All things considered, she’s pulling it off amazingly well. Hair looks great (if too severe) and we’ll pretend that her makeup doesn’t match her jumpsuit. Score: 8/10. We can only score so high for a pink, sparkly, harem-panted jumpsuit, kittens.

Combined Score: 8.5/10. He needs better tailoring and she needs to not wear pink, sparkly, harem-panted jumpsuits, but overall, they look like what they are: movie stars.

      He never ages.

His shoes are HUGE. They both do look great, though.

      • pokokpuding

Well. You know what they say about men with big feet.

        • Little_Olive

          It’s a myth :s

          ….big…..shoes…..

Sorry, couldn’t resist the “Runaway Bride” reference

          • Little_Olive

(“large” shoes) -still Julia, but in Notting Hill
            Sorry for the correction :p

        • http://twitter.com/JoStrickland Charlotte Fabricius

          Yeah, they wear big shoes.
Also, he does age. Streaks of grey in that beard. Too bad it just makes him look better.

          • TropiCarla

That self-same beard is making me weak in the knees right now. The years are being oh so kind to the Fresh Prince.

          • http://twitter.com/ArrogantDreamer nessia

He went gray quite some time ago, I remember working a red carpet with him 5 years ago and his hair was almost completely gray. They dye it. However, he still looks great, gray or not and is the nicest celeb I have had the pleasure of meeting.

      • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

I think his feet are huge. And pointy shoes are always longer. AND they’re shiny. That trifecta = huge-looking shoes.

      • Sweetbetty

I notice that in so many RC photos of men; their feet look ridiculously long and narrow.  I often wonder if it isn’t some distortion by the camera angle.  There must be a photo somewhere of Will Smith with bare feet and I’d love to see if they’re really shaped that way.

    • Kyle Crawford

I think this is a rare RARE mistake for her. She is so tiny, and understands that – this seems to swallow her.

      • Monabel

Quite. I was waiting for “stumpify.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000088447181 Sam Smith

I need help with this, what should a couple do when at a formal event?  If I’m wearing a formal gown or cocktail dress in colors galore, which is normally what I opt for, I get bored with my husband’s tux and white shirt, black tie.  Once in a while he wears a silver tie which is a nice change.  But once in a while I think it would be nice if he wore a fun bow tie that had maybe one of the colors of my dress in it.  Is that a no no?

      • MilaXX

Personally I like when the pocket square  compliments but not exactly matches my outfit. In my eye the little pop of color ties us together well without being too twee.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

I feel like the Mad Style posts would be a good resource on how to (and how not to) tie your outfits together subtly without trying too hard like Will and Jada here.

        • brokephilosopher

though to be fair, if my date and I looked like Will and Jada I would not complain.

      • sweetestsith

I think its the matching shades that make it prom-y instead of nice. Say you’re wearing a bright green dress (kelly or emerald), so your hubby pops into his black tux, but has a darker green vest or tie to compliment without matching. I also like the contrasting color route, but it can be harder to put together.

        • Candigirl1968

You hit the nail on the head with prom-y.  If Will wore a white shirt (or even one that had grey undertones), they would look complimentary, not matchy matchy.

      • Sartorial_She

I’m just jealous that you have enough formal events to attend that this is even an issue…

      • Sartorial_She

I’m just jealous that you have enough formal events to attend that this is even an issue…

    • ccinnc

It bothers me that I can’t see her feet.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DJHCEFC7S5WYITH3D5ORYGS56I amye

Are you sure that’s a jumpsuit?  It sure looks like a skirt/dress in the first picture, while the 2nd could go either way.

      • surfergirl70

If you look at the picture second from the top (Jada solo), you can see the slightest hint of red carpet showing through the pant leg gap.  Those are pretty voluminous pants, though.

    • Judy_J

I do like the pink shirt with the glen plaid, but his jacket sleeves are too short.  8/10. Her jumpsuit looks to be a couple of sizes too big.  7/10.  Doesn’t matter how great the design or fabric is….fit is crucial.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

His jacket sleeves are not too short, You can see the extra fabric over his biceps. That sleeve just needs to be pulled down.

Now, her hem length is another matter. Once again, why can’t these people get some tailoring?

    • janetjb

Too generous. I’d drop both down at least one full point.
She is drowning in the bottom half of her jumpsuit.
He should definitely wear this combo again, but with a jacket and shirt that fit properly.

    • 3rdsister

I thought I read someplace that they were splitting up.  Guess not . . . . .or else their outfits are a clever ruse.

Not fond of Jada’s outfit but she does look comfy.

Perhaps Will thinks he’s “juzshing”  (ok you spell it — I can’t remember) his sleeves?

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/SUAN5IS6U3RUIBS7USX2ZF3VFM Rachel

        Ruse, or overcompensation.

My first thought (after “my gosh, why is he wearing his son’s jacket?”) was that they were breaking/broken up, and I haven’t read anything about it.  They just seem like a classic “read the body language” example from a magazine.   He is aggressively putting the happy face forward and dominating her.  She is small and sad and moving her body away from him.

Of course, it could just be that he’s had some red bull and she has a headache, and the photographer told them they both need to move a squinch to their left.

        • 3boysful

I also thought she looked pissed, like they had a fight in the limo, he knows she can’t do anything about it for right now, and is giddy with relief (hoping she’ll forgive and forget by the end of the evening)!

He’d look better if it fit, and for me, her jumpsuit, while it looks comfortable, is kinda “meh.”

          • mountainFashionista

Her face always looks pissed to me, even when she’s smiling.  I’ve never really liked her as a star because I perceive her as being mean (which might not actually be true at all…).

            • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

              Exactly!

      • dschubba

I bet they’re headed down that Michael Jordan route, where they spend a decade almost getting divorced and deciding to stay together for the money, I mean, kids.

        • formerlyAnon

Though, to be fair, a lot of non-rich couples do that dance. And some of them eventually come to a good place again. (Hey – I HAVE actually seen it a couple of times. Honestly.)

    • TSkot

Didn’t they used to call what she’s wearing “party pajamas?”

    • j_anson

I… kinda love the pink, sparkly jumpsuit. The drape on her is so lovely and relaxed. I’m just… I’m sorry!

      • mountainFashionista

The fit on the bodice, esp. the neckline, is lovely!

        • Sweetbetty

But the fit at the waist is awful.  It looks like maybe she stepped on her too-long pants and pulled them down a bit in front and the  top is sagging over the waistband.  Don’t these people have handlers to pull his sleeve down and pull her pants up before they get their pictures taken?

    • SpcilK

I disagree his suite is a strobing and seizure inducing sensation. The jacket is way too small and his throwback to the 70′s shoes belong with another outfit. She looks all right for the minimal amount of effort she put in dressing herself.

      • jblaked

So true, it almost gave me a migraine.  And I normally love plaid suits.

    • Annabelle Archer

She is not exuding her usual self confidence and he looks like his shirt feels overly starched and tight.  Metaphor?  Who am I to say?

Best of luck to them. I give a seven as an overall couple score.

    • guest2visits

Hers look too much like fancy; but kind of mopey pj’s.. Very saggy, don’t know if it’s the thing to wear outside of a backyard
barbeque or summer party.  His would be fine if he gave a tug on that sleeve.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1016141160 Jennifer Sowell Glover

they make too much money to not have their clothing fit better.  his jacket is way too small, her jumpsuit is too loose in the bottom half.  she doesn’t need a belt, the waist is too big!!  i agree with the other poster about their body language:  awkward!

    • hughman

True story : centuries ago when I managed a clothing store for a designer in Soho, she came in with an older woman who was revealed to be her mom. They were looking for something for Mom to wear to the opening of a movie called “Independence Day”. Now I was not big on who was who (before the internet) and had never heard of Jada or her husband. In fact, Jada said to me “I design clothes so I know what I’m looking for” which, whatever. “Then why aren’t you dressing her in your clothes, woman?” But I digress.  Bottom line, she was actually really sweet and we spent around 45 minutes before she bought her Mom an awesome outfit. After she left, my salesgirls all said to me (like they always had to) “Didn’t you know who that was?”. Um, no. She was really tiny (and I’m really tall) but I wasn’t really giving it all a big Mensa Moment.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

Small chested people shouldn’t wear things that emphasize their smallness He pulls off a printed suit pretty damn well.

      • rawrgrowlrawr

“Small chested people shouldn’t wear things that emphasize their smallness” — Why not? Answer carefully or this small boob-ed lady may have to curse you.

Man has a limited biological capacity for change.
When this capacity is overwhelmed, the capacity is in future shock.

    • Qitkat

Oh dear. I am befuddled at your high scores. Shocked even.

For all that sparkle, that is one sad, droopy jumpsuit.
Perhaps he is that buff, for his jacket sleeves to pull up on his arms like that, but me no likee.

    • MilaXX

He has said that Jada picks and coordinates their RC outfits. I don’t mind matchy couples if done well. He looks good, but I agree the fit of the jacket is a bit off.
She looks okay. My issue is with the fit of the bottom half of the jumpsuit that seems a bit large on her. I agree with the scores.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

Wow. They both look much better than they have any right to, considering. His shirt cuffs are making me twitch, though.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

She looks like she is wearing her tall fairy godmother’s outfit.  Her zigzag part also looks like she got tapped by Voldermort’s wand or something.

    • GorgeousThings

She looks like she would rather chew glass than be there. Seriously – her body language just all sorts of “get me away from him”. That jacket looks really poorly fitted to him. The proportion is off at the lapel and closure.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

His plaid is messing up the moire on my computer screen!

      • JMB_edits

Imagine what it looked like on video!  I work in TV and that’s all I could think about when I saw the pattern.

    • Rebecca Johnson

From a distance Will’s suit looks like old-fashioned TV static. Jada’s jumpsuit would be much better as a dress. I’d give ‘em a combined 7/10.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

Jada is wearing pajamas.  She is another star that causes my eyes to roll.

    • ThaliaMenninger

His is too small. Hers is too big. I’d give ‘em each about a 4.4 and look out for whoever is Just Right, cause it ain’t  them.

    • TieDye64

Yikes! I would not want to piss that woman off. I give her a 7 for sparkly harem jumpsuit and I can’t give him anything higher than a 7 due to the ill/oddly fitting jacket.

    • rainwood1

They both look like they’re wearing the borrowed designer clothes that they are because nothing fits properly.  His jacket is too small and the sleeves too short, the pants are too long and too tight from the knee down.  Her jumpsuit is way too long – you can’t even see the toe of her shoes – and the waist seems a bit too big which makes the top seem saggy.  Even designer clothes don’t look good if they don’t fit.

    • mom2ab

this looks to me like their publicist broke up a fight to drag them out to make the appearance.  Neither one of them is wearing anything that fits properly, her makeup makes her look dead and they look miserable together.

    • Beth G

I gotta be honest… i’m not loving the current “in” fit on guys jackets.  Maybe I just grew up in the era of way to big, but ALL of them look like they have their little brother’s suit coat on.

    • giiiirrrr

I love the jumpsuit, though a shorter hem was in order.  Still, I’m giving them a combined 10–actually, that’s a 20, right?

    • LambeeBaby

I don’t think those are harem pants. I just think it looks like a poorly fitted sack dress and she always looks cranky…don’t tell her where I live.

    • AuntieAnonny

      Nope.

    • Anathema_Device

I love glen plaid so much. I agree with your scores here. His jacket is a bit too small, and she is being eaten alive by the pants part of that jumpsuit. The droopy waist isn’t helping much either.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

I am just shocked that those pant legs don’t make her look three feet tall (especially since she’s barely five feet, IIRC).  Magical avoidance of stumpenation!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=653713342 Tess Dugas Bartz

Honestly, it looks like she’s wearing his jumpsuit and he’s wearing her suit… *Eyeroll*

    • Lilithcat

You guys have been drinking, haven’t you?  Either that, or all those Met posts have tired you out.

They both look ridiculous.  She looks as though she a) forgot to hem her pants, or b) is trying out for a remake of “I Dream of Jeannie”.

And him!  Oy, gevalt.  A too tight glen plaid suit and a polka dot tie?

Neither gets more than a 5/10, and that’s only because I’m feeling generous tonight.

      • Lilak

        Ditto every last word!

(Our boys must be in a weakened state indeed to claim these two look like Movie Stars on this occasion.  Not even close.)

    • jfrancais

They look nice. Though a little, dare I say, washed-out-looking?

    • http://www.MintaHall.com/ Minta Hall

I don’t think i ever realized how BIG Will Smith is. Jada has got to be incredibly tiny. He looks like a giant standing next to her petite-ness. But they do have a serious glamour about them.

I just wish Jada had SMILED.  I have the feeling she wasn’t all that happy to be where she was when these photos were taken. Could they have had a fight in the limo on way to the RC?  She just looks seriously unhappy here.

    • Scarlet39

Will usually looks very put together.  i can’t help but think the fit of the jacket is on purpose.

    • kikisayshi

She could’ve totally glammed up that jumpsuit. And he always looks good.

    • sleepycat

Something happened on the ride over. Both don’t look like they want to be there. The jumpsuit is a size too big. When I first looked at the photos and my gaydar went of for both of them, I know there are rumors about both of them, although looking st the pictures more it was the fact they look strange in these photos. Idk

    • Jessica O’Connell

He’s pulling it the hell off because he is Will Smith. :-D *sigh*

Yeah, but they always match. Or at least they used to. Haven’t seen them together much lately.

Anyway, you were far too kind.

    • quiltrx

I can’t stand these two.  They showed their real faces at the Oscars a few years back when they didn’t know the camera was on them.  Then they grinned like idiots when it hit them.  I wish the whole family would go away.

      • TieDye64

Oooo, I didn’t know anything about that. They do bug, though.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I seem to remember them doing the matchy match thing fairly often on the red carpet.

    • TomBord

      G.A.Y.

    • Roman000

If it were me I would’ve went with a solid black tie instead of a matching plaid one with the jacket. Otherwise I think Will looks awesome as always.

      Jada….eh who cares?

    • Pants_are_a_must

No. That jumpsuit is awful. AWFUL. 1/10 and not 0/10 only because her face looks good.

    • Zippypie

I have to put this down to you boys being slap-happy from all the MET gala posts.  Two people as rich and movie star savvy as they are should know better than to go to a premier in matchy-matchy clothing that doesn’t fit at all.  They look ridiculous at best and like they couldn’t give a shit at worst.

    • PrunellaV

Wow, that was a rose-tinted assessment. She’s wearing hostess pajamas, and he’s a well-built clown. Only their genetic superiority keeps them from going lower than 5/10.

    • alyce1213

      ????  Really?
I think they look ridiculous in these outfits.

    • formerlyAnon

Him: 8/10. I don’t really believe his suit is too small, but that’s what I see in this picture.

Her: 8.5/10. She gets a bonus half point because she doesn’t look like “Trying Too Hard” is her motto. Which is how I usually think she looks.

      Combined: 8.25/10

    • Imasewsure

I think she looks awful but I really do like his suit

    • Rebecca Jay

      Hate her.  Love the jumpsuit.

    • http://twitter.com/snookumslynn snookums lynn

Will is doing ALL the heavy lifting on this one…Jada, just cause it perfectly matched his suit, was ALL the more reason to not buy the fug!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’m awful, because the only comment I can find is “Oh, lord – those two.”

    • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

      She looks so comfortable!

    • Catiline

Honestly, I think she’s pulling it off.  The outfit isn’t a showstopper and the hair/makeup/accessories are a little plain, but it’s a beautiful color against her skin tone.

Mr. Smith?  The fit of that jacket PLUS the pattern are driving me a little crazy.

    • tsid2012

Love his suit and’ just from personal experiance, I know that when I put my arm around someone for a photo or reach, my jacket sleevs and sometimes shirt neck can move around slightly.  The pantsuit is fun, a little droopy in the top, but her make up looks old and unflattering.  And oddly unmade up.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I think the jump suit doesn’t work because it looks entirely too big.  I’m just glad to see her dressing like a grown up instead of like her children.

    • Kayceed

I like the color scheme very much, and I love a glen plaid, but would have knocked him down a couple points for the ridiculous fit. Miss Jada – ok I know that outfit cost at least as much as my mortgage payment, and possibly several of them, but it looks like a “make it in three hours” pattern, executed in the devil’s fabric of glitterdot. It doesn’t look expensive.

    • BrooklynBomber

      It’s true, it’s a pink, sparkly, harem-panted jumpsuit, but I love it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=601016544 Amy J Albin

I just cant get behind the plaid, looks cheap and not stylish to me. She looks amazing!

    • AlinaValero

I just had to Google if they were still together since I remembered hearing divorce rumors recently, but I’m SO glad to find out they are in fact rumors. In light of that, I don’t care (as much) what they’re wearing. Yay successful celebrity marriages!

    • RebeccaKW

He looks good.  His personality is really what helps pull this look off.  She…is on my irrational hate list.  Will seems so high-energy and happy and positive all the time and she just looks like a drag.  Like she’s above it all…like with this Bitch Face.  Posh Spice gives Bitch Face but at the same time seems like a real person.  Jada just seems to have a bad attitude, and that never makes an outfit look better.  ESPECIALLY sparkly harem-panted jumpsuits.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Must be something wrong with my monitor, because that color looks lavender, not pink.

In any case, I’m in 100% agreement that matchy couples look silly and prom-y. I have a hard time forgiving it when I see teenagers doing it, but grown ass adults? It’s just not good.

I actually like that jumpsuit she’s wearing, but I think she should have had the bottom taken in and hemmed. I don’t think she needed to go down a size, as the top part fits her beautifully. The pants part is just WAY too wide for such a petite woman. Big flowy pants, like a lot of fashion, are made for the tall-drink-of-water types. We shorties can’t pull that look off.

He looks pretty sharp. That’s a great suit. I’m thinking maybe he just pushed his sleeves up; I can’t imagine he purposely wore 3/4 length sleeves.

    • librarygrrl64

LOVE that suit! My dad had one like that, only the accent color was a subtle light blue.

      • granddelusion

“My dad had one like that”! Kind of says it all….

        • librarygrrl64

LOL! Yeah. It was (is) a great suit, very expensive at the time. But I’m thinking it must have been new in the 80s. I still see it every once it a while because about 10 years ago my mom purged his closet (he hadn’t worn a suit to work in years) and donated his suits to the theater where I’m a member. He is a 42 regular, so his old suits get quite a workout on that stage. ;-)

    • aimee_parrott

They’re usually pretty matchy on the RC, aren’t they?  They often wear the same designer and similar colors.

I gotta say the fit of that jacket is hurting my feelings.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=786229820 Rhonda Hanson

      Did she get cheek implants?

      • Pennymac

I thought “work has been done” while looking at her face. Not sure….
At any rate, 8.5 is a good call on these two.

    • granddelusion

I have to agree. She is just adorable, but her clothes are usually pretty crazy. If this were a dress, I’d love it, since it’s pants, i probably would have take off more points than you did.

He looks great, if a little cartoony. He can carry it off, though. Especially at an Easter party.

    • marilyn

His suit is way too smal.  Also, I realize that publicity tours are taxing, but they both look very wooden and sad underneath their smiles.  I would like to put it down to the stress of their schedule.  They look like a very unhappy real couple, or wax mannequins.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CQPXLNCBM5CZSHZZXJDHPVFS7E Buffy

His suit will give me seizures if I stare at it too long

    • ccm800

      He looks ridiculous.

I think there are fit issues with that suit; something is wrong.  Good looking as he is, he looks awkward.
I think she is beautiful.  I wish I could wear that pink, sparkly, harem pant jumpsuit.  Adjusting for everything else, though, I’m too old for pink sparkly.  My daughter, on the other hand……

He:  I’ll bet he had just waved to someone and his sleeve didn’t fall down again (whcih means, in my mind, that they are too tight…) but other thant that, he looks altgether hot and cool!
She:  I’d love this so much better if the hem were a titch higher as to show the shoes.  Just a titch.
I love the color on both of them, so I agree with your score.

I didn’t know Giorgio Armani was producing couture sleepwear now.

I love the big fat knot on his tie. He looks really amazing, and sorry, but I’m a sucker for a Hollywood couple that is so happily married after a decade and two children that they want to dress alike. Go pink sparkles!

I did not realize those were pants.

Love the suit he’s wearing.  He looks great.  Well deserved 9.

She, OTOH – that jumpsuit is hanging off her and puddling onto the carpet - eat a hamburger, honey!  And would it kill you to smile?

You say “pink, sparkly, harem-panted jumpsuit” like it’s a bad thing…

Oh please, a 9/10 when the fit issues are screaming?

OMG-someone call a doctor!  TLo has gone blind!  An 8.5 for this pair?  Outrageous!  Fit issues abound with him and her EYE SHADOW MATCHES HER DRESS!!  No to mention some changes in the accessorizing for her (would it kill you to wear a nice necklace or bigger earrings?).  And what shoes is she wearing?  Oh, that’s right-you can’t see them b/c of this burlap sack of a spangly, pink pantsuit!  What have T & Lo been smoking?

he:  is wearing a cool glen plaid suit which appears to be too tight and short in the sleeves and too tight and long in the pant legs.  but yes, extra points for pairing it with a pink shirt and especially a POLKA DOT TIE!

she: is wearing, and i beg to differ here, a dusty rose glittering palazzo-panted jumpsuit.  which is miles too long.  her makeup is perfect, she just needs to change her clothes.
