Pairs Division: Smith and Pinkett-Smith

Posted on May 24, 2012

Apparently, the MIB3 premiere was a costume party.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith attend the premiere of “Men in Black 3″ in NYC. Jada Pinkett-Smith wore a Bill Blass gown and Will Smith wore a Gucci Jacket.

Bill Blass Fall 2012 Collection

Gucci Spring 2012 Collection

Because these two obviously went as Don Draper and Morticia.

HE: Is someone we can never really stay mad at because he has a fondness for big plaids and we love a guy who can rock a Herb Tarlek jacket. Unfortunately, the fit on this thing is weird, and like all the jackets he’s been wearing lately, it looks too snug in the arm and, weirdly, too big in the shoulder. We realize you’ve gotta keep the manly-man action hero vibe going stronger than ever, but ill-fitting jackets that make you look bigger than you are isn’t the way, Will. Still, everything else is so perfect (check that hem!) that we find ourselves in a forgiving mood. Score: 7.5/10. But not THAT forgiving.

SHE: Is serving up Chiller Theater Hostess realness. And she’s one of the few non-model women we’ve seen who can make a sheer skirt and granny panties work for her. The bust looks strangely bunched up on her but that’s the only complaint we have. Love the hair. Score: 8.5/10. Statement jewelry would’ve been nice.

Combined Score: 8/10. That seems about right.

    Love it!

  • MilaXX

they look good! At ain’t mad at em.

  • Violina23

Funky, but I’d say they are both pulling it off :)

  • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

I wouldn’t dare ever criticize Jada, even for granny pants, because she always looks like she’s ready to hand out a serious ass-whupping at the drop of a hat.  Seriously, though, other than the jacket fit issues, I think they both look great.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Whenever I see Jada, I see a woman who absolutely should nevuh, evuh, be messed with.

  • marilyn

I was going to comment on how bad Will Smith looks in the jacket, but then I saw the runway model who looks a lot worse- like someone who’s come a courtin’ Ellie May. All he needs is a straw hat, a few teeth missing and a bouquet of flowers. As if the print weren’t bad enough, it is way too tight and short on the runway model.  Yikes!

Will Smith is the innocent trying to move on to high end couture for men. Someone needs to tell him that just because a famous designer made something and is charging a lot of money for it, it does not mean he should buy it. He needs to think about whether it is right for him. Sometimes, the fact that something is foreign makes it odd (and not in a good way) here. That jacket looks like it should have been worn in Caddyshack. Is that a look he really wants? Come on-he is a great looking guy and that look ages him.

All I have to say about Jada is that she looks fantastic and happy. Good for her!

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I think that’s the best I have seen out of them, as a couple. Usually one of them misses the mark a fair bit. (looking’ at you Missy Jada). And,… They are both smiling and happy looking at the same time.

  • miagain

Do not love her hair… not one little bit!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

TLo, you read my mind.  I thought…he’s pulling a Don Draper here.  Wearing something in style that looks absolutely ridiculous on him. He seems to be on the plaids this junket.  Move on Will, it’s not your look.

  • megohd

Sorry, Jada is just looking faker and faker. Those cheekbones are ridiculous, and not in a good way, IMHO.

    • AnaRoW

She’s always had high cheekbones. The problem is that she has no body/facial fat left so they look more severe than they used to.

      • megohd

Maybe, but those cheekbones just look so HIGH now! It looks like a surgical intervention and just isn’t flattering! I always hear about actresses saying you have to choose your ass or your face, and they choose the ass, so the face suffers. But both her ass AND her face could stand an extra sandwich or two.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I love the dress, but so many of these actresses look so damn angular and severe on the red carpet. Also, those pointy nails are scary.

      • bluefish

        Her nails look gross!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=847525391 Barbara Lee Woodruff

I think he’s scored too low. He should be a 9 at least. Based on the picture of the model, the jacket is supposed to be that way, with exaggerated shoulders. And look how beautifully hemmed his pants are! That alone should get him a high score. That combined with the cuff of his sleeve completes the package. Of course, I’ve always had a thing for him, which could be affecting my scores….

  • siriuslover

They both look good. I love this jacket on Will Smith. Jada’s nails look like they could cut you.

  • kirkyo

I’m thinking he could have pulled off the suit version. Not 100% sure, but I can see it.

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

That is one fabulous couple. Jada often seems less stiff when she’s with Will, which I find a bit endearing.

  • SpcilK

WTF! He has got to move pass his Midlife Crisis… Will, you are not a buding young actor and do not have the 26-30 inch waist required to  pull off these type of suits or jackets. Stop trying so hard! Jada, I just don’t know what to say.

  • LuisaNL

this is one of the best jada looks I’ve seen in a while. the dress is gorgeous, love the hair, and she looks so relaxed and not like she’s about to crack a someone’s head with her thighs. will, not so much. too dark, matchy matchy. a bit cartoonish for my taste.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I think the shape of this jacket is a little weird – it’s got the same issues on the model of looking a little zoot. So maybe not a great choice off the bat, but I agree that Smith’s willingness to take risks with his clothing is very endearing even despite apparently being on Cruise-control (see what I did there? Yuk yuk yuk).
Jada’s always fierce. I envy her leonine cheekbones.

  • kimmeister

I quite like the jacket on Will. As for Jada’s sheer-over-granny-panties, at least on her the skirt doesn’t look *that* sheer.  That’s what saves it for me.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I realize chic doesn’t always mean flattering, but I can’t help but think the exposed sternum look is really just too severe for her.  Kudos for making the granny panties work though, seriously.

  • JimMcC

SWOON. I want that suit. I need that suit. I can’t afford that suit.

  • MsKitty

They look pretty decent. Jada’s been on a roll since this is her 3rd or 4th look in a row where I wasn’t WTF.

  • TropiCarla

    They are SLAMMIN!
Plus, I adore the smiles in the last photo. He must have loved that easy-access gown in the limo.

  • carolynmo

    Herb Tarlek! I miss WKRP. . . .

As my dad would say, that’s a loud jacket.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/toodleskitty79?feature=guide AWS

*snort*laugh “Herb Tarlek” reference to “WKRP in Cincinnati”.  I WIN THE TRIVIA TROPHY FOR THE DAY!  Although, you’d think the Fresh Prince were at the GREAT GATSBY movie premiere.

I love the outfits on these two.  They look like they are having fun and that’s half the battle…

  • formerlyAnon

I’d score him higher. Yeah, the jacket doesn’t seem to quite fit. But it [doesn't] fit the same way several of his recent jackets have[n't] fit – so I think he (& definitely his stylist, if he uses one) THINKS they fit. So, does that make it better, or worse?

Anyway, he wore the eye-catching jacket with nice black slacks, and attractive, real grown man shoes with socks, not the sockless patent loafers shown on the runway. And I really dig the white edging on the black pocket square. All of which makes me appreciate his choices. He gets an 8.5 out of me to match her score for 8.5/10 combined.

  • Spreecord

They manage to look good, even despite the grandma panties and the suit jacket of tragedy. But there’s something about watching Will Smith that is starting to make me increasingly uncomfortable. It’s like those dead eyes of his are screaming “When they clear your thetans, they clear your soul!”

  • samo_samo

LOL @ “Because these two obviously went as Don Draper and Morticia.” – So glad he didn’t opt for the full suit. Loved Jada’s hair.

  • CozyCat

I’m looking forward to seeing Alan Cumming in that full suit…

    • formerlyAnon

Dapper little gent that he is, he could probably wear a bowler with it and not look ridiculous. I’m starting to think it might be a super power.

      • CozyCat

Yes, a bowler hat!  And oxfords in some neon color.

I would not be at all surprised if he has super powers….

  • SignLadyB

Love that they look so happy. His jacket makes me smile (in a good way) but gotta say that Ms Jada’s make up(?) makes her look old and/or exhausted. Could be the dress but, compared to the WERK in Versace last week she appears to have aged 20 years. Also, and I know I’ll get scolded (if not outright shunned) but I’m so sick of men of color thinking that those gangsta hand signals are cool! Go ahead, call me racist–I’m really not. I’m just sick of this 10 year (or more) pretension from mostly men (of color or not).

  • jw_ny

I gotta give Will more credit because even tho the jacket is ill fitted, he’s rockin that big, bold plaid.  Love it.  He looks great.

She looks pretty good..but tired.  Statement jewelery would have helped…so would a nap.  ;)

  • Judy_J

Even though the shoulders of the jacket don’t fit properly, I still think Will looks pretty darn good in that jacket. I’d bump his score up to 8.5.  Her score remains the same.

  • mshesterp

Granny panty chic done right (I actually don’t hate the look when deployed well, and this has been deployed remarkably well).
I love his fondness for bold colors and patterns.  I never see the fit issues until you point them out, but damn if he doesn’t make it work anyway.  But honey, put the finger guns/peace signs/pointing habit away.  You’re cute enough as it is.

  • piecesofconfetti

At least she’s smiling now, and it looks halfway sincere.

  • fringebenefit

Is she bare-footed? I don’t like the length…this is a dress that calls for statuesque…which can’t be accomplished when the dress is dragging along the floor.

  • poggi

She looks great in the Couples shots, but a little hard and scary in the solo shots. She looks beautiful when she smiles.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=4501978 Martha Jackson Deutsch

Are you kidding me? She looks awful! The skirt is way too long, her hair is gross, and those talon finger nails finish off the look. I think he looks way better than she.

    • Rachel Sawyer

       Those fingernails really are creepy!

    • TieDye64

Thank you! I’m trying really hard not to be bitchy about the nails, but when you have a rather hard/angular look the pointed nails really give off a wicked, witchy vibe.

  • Cathy S

I love that jacket so much.

  • Le_Sigh

Cute!  Its like real-life fun fabulous doll clothes.

Also -  I have to say how cute their height difference is.  Its massive, but her attitude and personality make me look at her just as much as him.  And the lack of him slouching awkwardly to meet her helps too.  As a wee gal myself, I like how it seems to work well when they pose on the RC together.

  • MzzPants

    Y’all crazy.  He looks great.

  • http://twitter.com/andsheewas Renee H.

Both look good, but that dress is amazing.

  • Lina_bee

OMG THEY’RE SMILING! They’re BOTH smiling! *awards ALL the points* Also, I covet her dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

THANK YOU for the Herb Tarlek reference!

  • momogus

OMG I LOVE his jacket! I think he looks perfect. She looks beautiful, but is so scary.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

The celebrities are cute, but mostly I just love you guys for the WKRP reference.  Old people high five!

  • DCSheehan

She looks the best I’ve ever seen.  He should have worn the whole suit.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

i think they’re both rocking it.
and i’m glad he didn’t do the plaid pants with.  ugh.

  • NurseEllen

Thank you, Will, for not wearing the plaid pants.  SO much better when paired with black!  I might have preferred a skinnier tie but all in all I like his look and would give him a teency bit higher score, maybe 8/10.

I really dislike the whole idea of dresses cut down to THERE where the body which is highlighted is kind of not fun to look at.  While bearing in mind that the TLo rule is not to criticize physiques, I am trying to make a real point here, which is, why expose a female torso that has not the least bit of what is commonly accepted as “female-ness” to it?  She’s admirably toned (and I love seeing her arm muscles) but the body revealed in the “V” could easily be a hairless male chest.  Now, I’m not advocating that someone who’s a 40D should wear this, either; too much exposure is equally distasteful.  But Jada is not curvy enough to wear this–and neither is the model, for that matter.  Maybe no woman can really wear this?  Maybe it’s Bill Blass’s fault.  And, honest to God, she could cut glass with those cheekbones.  She gets only a 6/10 from me.

I’m hiding from the arrows, but I’ll be sticking to my guns.

    • formerlyAnon

I think she scores higher, but your basic argument is sound.

    • golden_valley

I vote for no woman can really wear this.  Designers seem to design for gangly 12 year old boy bodies.

  • trisker

Really wish Jada would cut her fingernails and maybe paint them.

  • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

I think she can pull off the granny panties better than most we’ve seen because they always seem to be in the form of a black dress and black granny panties. She’s dark-skinned so it looks more subtle.  I didn’t even notice the granny panties until they were mentioned.  The lines are just too prominent on lighter skinned ladies in dark dresses/GPs.  If it was a light-colored dress and granny panties, the opposite would be true.

  • http://twitter.com/LPsometimes LP

How is it more acceptably female to have big boobs?  I’m sure plenty of flatter chested women would take issue with that. (I’m not even one of them, I wouldn’t wear something like Jada’s wearing because I’d be hanging out too much).  Why do people have to fit some sort of gender stereotype to wear a low-necked dress?

  • GTrain

ugh she’s back to being too severe to me

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XZTPYIF64TK3QDEMWUAS3KULFI Ted

    that Gucci suit. *dies*

  • Kirsten Kirsten

I’m worried about these two. She looks absolutely exhausted in these photos. He, for the last few weeks, seems go be really forcing the jolly jester routine. He’s smiling really hard, but his eyes don’t show happiness or joy.

  • judybrowni

I have a problem with the plunging neckline when the wearer is so thin we see the outline of her breast bones and/or ribs.

C’mon, just a teensy bit of subcutaneous fat, or a higher neckline, please.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i’m with you.  i’m tired of seeing her bony sternum.

  • judybrowni

My father had that jacket in 1976. In polyester. Just sayin’.

  • malvernite

calling shenanigans on them cheeks. jada’s been lean for many years, and past pix never showed her cheeks so prominently. the proportions immediately call to mind folks that have had work done – the cheeks are just taking up too much real estate to be natural.

  • Call me Bee

Herb Tarlek! Ahahahaha…..sigh.  Thanks!  I haven’t thought of him in decades.

  • PeaceBang

I’m sorry — she looks like a pay-by-the-hour tranny. Entirely hideous.

  • Susan Crawford

Good call on both, T and Lo! Jada’s dress is ALMOST too much for her petite frame, but her innate fierceness makes it impossible to even whisper a hint of criticism! And Will Smith? He’s always so darn affable that he could show up in lederhosen and a pair of wooden shoes and I’d give him an 8.5. Just keep him away from too much exposure to Tom Cruise before that affability becomes desperation, okay?

  • butterflysunita

I would have given them higher scores.  Both look great.

  • blondie65

OMG…my DH just made a Herb Tarlek reference tonight at our daughter’s high school awards ceremony (cute senior with the plaid jacket and matching  shoes & belt and topped off bow tie)!!!

Back to Will & Jada….all I have to say is at least she is finally smiling in a few photos.  That alone improves the look!!

  • Wellworn

Herb Tarlek!  Now that’s a blast from the past.  If you remember that, you must be as ancient as I am.  Love Jada’s hair like this way.  When she wears it tightly back, I am afraid to look her in the eyes.

  • ccm800

    Gomez and Tish.

  • Candice Richardson

    I like it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=667203651 Susan Stroud Lloyd

Is it me, or is she showing off the fact she’s not wearing a wedding ring?  Are they together or are they not?  Glad they are still stepping out together – they are still one of my favorite Hollywood couples!

  • ChristySchiff

“(check that hem!)” – I actually said this to myself out loud when I saw the pictures.

  • SewingSiren

    I like his jacket.
    Is that Madonna?

  • BazoDee

There is nothing Tom Cruise-ish about that jacket!

  • guest2visits

I like this on both of them. In spite of the see through skirt and granny panties, this looks beautiful on Jada.
Especially with her smile, it’s a werq.

  • golspie

I d0on’t know what it is about her. She is beautiful and poised and yet her styling always seems to emphasise her over-toned body which, just like Madonna, makes her look stringy and attenuated, and therefore old.
