Pairs Division: Smith and Pinkett-Smith

Posted on May 10, 2012

The Bitter Kittens thought we scored these two a little high yesterday, and in retrospect maybe we did, but sometimes overall impact trumps issues of detailing and we continue to be impressed by their commitment to dressing like goddamn movie stars. A lot of celebrity couples don’t make nearly the effort.

Which is a way of letting you know now that, yes, we’re about to score them high despite some fit issues and not-great accessories.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith attend the premiere of “Men in Black 3″ in Tokyo. Jada Pinkett-Smith wore a Alberta Ferretti white gown with geometric cut out and nude underlay from the Spring 2012 collection.

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Abbey Lee Kershaw

HE: Is KILLING us here, because he’s rocking these insanely chic and fabulous plaid suits, which we can only hope will spur a trend of thousands of men trying the same thing, thereby making the world more interesting to look at, but he’s fumbling the message because they don’t fit him as well as they should. This isn’t nearly as bad as the one we showed yesterday, though. Also, while the tie is perfectly integrated and we’re not saying we don’t like it, we think something with some slight contrast would have looked better. Still, you can color us pretty impressed with the overall effort. He’s always been a sharp dresser, but we’re really loving what he’s been breaking out for this press tour. Just get them fitted a little better, Will. Score: 9/10.

SHE: Looks MUCH better in this than those glittery pajamas. We’d go so far as to say she’s serving it up and by “it,” we mean a big ol’ plate of fierce. Our only issue is that the bottom of the bust is pulling in a way that doesn’t look deliberate. The purse is boring and the shoes are a  little heavy-looking, but strangely enough, we love the hair. We usually hate that one-shoulder mermaid style (just ask Eva Green), but she’s got an angular face, and the asymmetrical waves really suit it. In one shot it looks like she’s sporting a lining on the hip and in another it doesn’t, so we can’t speak as to whether she’s wearing underwear or not, which, we suppose may have been the point. Score: 9/10.

Combined Score: 9/10. It’s true once again that there are issues with the detailing, but you can’t really say they’re not making an impact, nor can you say that they’re not putting the effort in. Compare the fierceness on display here to the average Pitt-Jolie or Cruise-Holmes appearance. As celebrity couples go, these two are at the front of the race when it comes to Hollywood glamour.

Only Will Smith could get away with that suit (bows down in awe).

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I agree. I shudder to consider the number of I’ll fitted and I’ll chosen plaid suits we are about to be bombarded with, should this become a thing.

      • Shreya Aren

Still. I’d have to agree with TLo that it’ll be a more interesting world for sure.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

No question it would be more interesting. Of course I am something of an iconoclast, and would love to see suits either fade into obscurity, or burst their bonds, and really show individuality of cut, color, fabrications, and decorative elements.

      • MilaXX

At least he lack the tiny head big body look of Kellan Lutz

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Too awful to think on.

    • MoHub

       Will Smith and Alan Cumming.

      • MilaXX

RDJ would wear it, but frak it up with matching sneakers and sunglasses

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Alan can wear ANYTHING and pull it off.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I don’t really see Alan in those colors (something bolder, maybe red), but he sure can rock a plaid suit like nobody else.

    • julnyes

It looks good on him, but I think it would work on a lot of men – RDJ comes immediately to mind.

  • Sobaika Mirza

These two can do no wrong in my eyes. Fabulous couple.

  • dschubba

That gown only works in 3/4 profile. Face on, it’s a bit much.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Exactly!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=786229820 Rhonda Hanson

are they out and about so much because they trying to deal with divorce rumors? what are they promoting?

    • RebeccaKW

Men In Black III.  I’m not sure when it’s out, but I saw a commercial for it yesterday.

  • RebeccaKW

I still love him and I still think she’s cranky all the time.  But this is much better than that jumper from yesterday.  But I like the original neckline/shoulders that appears on the model better.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

Superfab. I bet Will Smith was sick of black suits from the movie, though. “I am SICK of black suits. I need a freaking break.” Good for him.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PKI5RTEEJ5TZIZII6VEN2G3D7A Caitlin

    I totally agree 100%

  • Judy_J

Another hip-baring dress?  Guess it really is trending (*chokes back sob*).  He looks great, and I do love a man in plaid.  She looks better in this dress than she did in the pink pjs she was sporting yesterday, but I still don’t like the exposed hip look.

  • BrooklynBomber

I liked the glittery pjs, and I would like this dress if the cut out was only across. But running down the legs makes it look chip in a (not so) chip way.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VLSBN5JNTENWDZKHQY3Y4TVHEU Jennifer

SMILE, Jada – you’re skinny, rich, and famous.

  • Le_Sigh

I wonder if her shoes are because she’s uber tiny and they didn’t want to hem the dress.  I love how fun and fresh it all looks (the plaid, the white, the small pops of color) and so appropriately movie-premire-esqe.

(On a side note – They haven’t aged at all have they?)

  • Lilithcat

I guess I’m just not a fan of “A for effort” grading, or grading on a curve..  She looks much better here, though I like the original fabric better than the stiffer one used in her version of the gown.  But I just cannot give anything better than a mediocre score to a guy who looks like he’s wearing a suit he’s outgrown.

  • SpillinTea

Lawd Will just gets sexier as he gets older, big ears and all.  Oh to be Duane Martin (don’t act like you haven’t heard the rumors…lol) ;)

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Complete agreement with you.  They look fabulous, and even with the styling details, look ONE MILLION TIMES better than Jolie-Pitt and Holmes/Cruise.

    • MilaXX

THIS! between the Jolie-Pitts looking like they’d rather be anywhere but on the RC and the Holmes-Cruise looking like they can’t be bothered to dress up, they both work my nerves.

  • nannypoo

She looks great. I usually dislike transparent side panels but they work here. I don’t like his little plaid suits. He reminds me of Howdy Doody, and not in a good way.

  • moppet

“Compare the fierceness on display here to the average Pitt-Jolie or Cruise-Holmes appearance.”
Wow, talk about nailing the difference. You’re right on point.

Could someone explain to me the fit issues with this particular suit? I could see the problems clearly yesterday, today not as much. Looks like the cuffs are breaking pretty well (he doesn’t seem awash in fabric at his ankles), the jacket sleeves are long enough, the button doesn’t look ready to pop. But I’m not an expert in judging fit issues for men.

    • TAGinMO

I need the same explanation, because I think the jacket fits him perfectly. Yes, there’s slight gapping at the left lapel and below the button, but that’s because he has his arm around her in all of the pics. If you want a suit-jacket or sportscoat to lay perfectly, you have two choices: keep those hands at your side, or unbutton it before you put your arm around somebody. (Well, I guess there’s a third choice: wear a jacket that’s too big for you.)

Hem length looks great, sleeve length looks great, and there’s no pulling anywhere. In sum: No problems here.

    • formerlyAnon

All I can come up with is that the proportions established by the cut – on his build – give the impression that he’s growing out of the suit.

    • Verascity

To my eye, it’s a little tight in the shoulders and across the chest. And that second button should *not* be unbuttoned. The cumulative effect gives him sort of a linebacker look.

  • alyce1213

Maybe plaids this bold should be reserved for very slender men (like Will 20 years ago).  It’s a bit much on the big, muscular guy he is now.
The jacket simply doesn’t fit him, and because of his body type I don’t think any plaid like it would look well.  I’d keep to subtler plaids.  Better than yesterday, but still only 5 for poor choice of fabric and jacket fit.

She’s also better than yesterday, but I dislike the dress, bad hair and matchy clutch, so 4.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

I love the plaid suit and her dress. Def. agree with your scoring.

  • julnyes

I’ve never particularly liked him outside of the Fresh Prince (I’m still bitter he beat Biggie for a Grammy) and she has been meh to me post A Different World, but I think they both look like stars and when compared to the other listed celebrity couples they are certainly the front runners style wise.

  • mjude

i love him.  they do look smashing

  • TieDye64

It’s not perfect, but I really do love what he’s got going on here. It’s so nice to see someone (almost) rocking a plaid suit, so I’ll go with your 9/10.
She looks much better here, but I really hate that hair and the side panels are a bit much.  7/10
I do see what you mean about putting the effort in, though.

  • MilaXX

His suit is a much better fit than yesterday’s. I don’t even mind that he kept the shirt and tie simple because the suit is really great.
She looks good as well. Other than the bust issue this dress fits her much better than yesterday’s look. Either she got a new makeup artist or she gained a few pounds because her cheekbones don’t look as sharp as they have in the past. However as much as I like her look I don’t think I would give her more than an 8/10

  • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

I don’t think they’re overscored at all, when you consider the degree of difficulty on those outfits. These two are just dominating the podium.

  • Cathy S

I love  both of these looks. Much better than the earlier post.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I have been seeing a lot of full plaid suits at fancy events I have been working at (mostly Moods of Norway), and I feel the need to give audible snaps to men who pull it off.

  • granddelusion

Hate the hair. And, it ages her.

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t hate it, but I agree it’s aging. She’s old enough now that her (lovely) strong bones can look stark, and that hair does not have a softening effect.

  • Imasewsure

I think he looks great and she looks like a fashionista-wanna-be (she always looks a little foolish to me… don’t know why)

  • formerlyAnon

I’ll agree with her 9/10. When her clothes don’t scream “trying too hard,” she really does know how to dress herself.

He has to go down a bit, although I am a tad perplexed about why, exactly. Even if the suit fits him and it’s a great departure from menswear ennui, it *gives the impression* that it’s too small.  I don’t know if it’s really too small – you guys say it “doesn’t fit him as well as it should” – but I suspect that maybe the cut of the trousers plus the length of the jacket combine on a man of his build to give the impression that he’s growing out of his suit?  8.5/10, and that’s bumped up a bit just because I like the colors in the plaid so much.

    8.75/10, combined score.

  • rumcg66

I disagreed with your scoring for these two the other day, but I’m in agreement here; they’re killing it.

  • carolynmo

I like her dress better on the model. The longer torso appeals to me more than the midriff style she has with her version. However, they look better here than yesterday. Much better.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

    Ok, now this I LOVE.

  • Spicytomato1

I love his suit, the cut and color. Not too many guys could pull off the plaid so well and he’s doing it. And it’s definitely better than yesterday’s dusty pink-accented one. The one thing I liked both yesterday and today on him are the slimmer cut of the pants.

As for the missus, I do not like her dress. It looks like a Project Runway castoff to me, cheap and poorly fitted and those cut-out thingys seem kinda craft-y looking to me.

  • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

Overall both looks are really working for me, and that’s in part because the clothes are just more interesting than what an average pair division post would be sporting.

  • SpcilK

Let’s be honest with one another…This suit is hideous on him! I give him credit for his risk taking, but this is not a good look for him. She is off her tricycle too! This is far better than the pink peep outfit she wore the other day. You can’t buy style, it’s initiate, something someone reeks of.

  • kimmeister

I’m hating her hair, partially because I actually can’t tell if the sides of her head have a buzz cut or if it’s just swept back severely.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Jada trumps the model in that dress, and that’s not easy for a short little pixie! Will looks dapper and smart. Your scores are just right!

  • Terence Ng

I actually think Smith looked better yesterday. As to whether Pinkett-Smith looks better today, there is simply no question. She destroyed Yesterday Pinkett-Smith. All hail Today Pinkett-Smith.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

    In for pretend.

  • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

I agree that the hair on Jada looks WORLDS better than it did on Eva.

  • girliecue

Will the Killa! Damn he looks good. I actually don’t mind what Jada is wearing. But I’m over the lady comb-over everyone in Hollywood seems to be sporting.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

       LOL “lady comb-over”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Guess I am the only hater here, because they are absolutely vomitous in my book.  GAG

  • BeeBeauNYC

    I LOVE HIS SUIT!!!

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

That is the best application of mermaid hair ever, probably because despite being one-shouldered, it doesn’t look old-fashioned, princessy, or even mermaidy. It looks modern and angular, because her face is modern and angular, and her dress is modern and angular.
He is just too adorable for words. He can wear whatever he wants, and I’m SO pleased he’s decided that means he must look awesome at all times.

  • Qitkat

Huge improvement from yesterday, for both of them. Not normally a fan of the plaid suit, but he looks amazing. I think her angularity of body/face really suits a dress like this, and it fits her perfectly. Good choice for her to alter it.

  • Lisa

This is way, way, WAY better than yesterday!

  • a_liking

Will Smith looks so giant in these pictures! I never realized he was such a big guy. Still, positively LOVE the plaid suits. Always been a sucker for print suits. I think Jada’s hair works because it almost looks shaved on the side? (is it?) which is pretty punk awesome on a movie star.

  • guest2visits

Once again; I think he looks pretty good in his plaid suit. Once again; don’t really like Jada’s choice. It was terrible on the
model, and not too much better on her.  And I’m beginning to think that she has permanently altered her face somehow.

  • NurseEllen

She needs to loan this dress to Zoe Saldana when she’s done with it.  I can easily see her rocking it, too.

OTOH, I can’t think of anyone who might want to borrow Will’s suit.  He gets points for trying but I don’t know, I think he’s just too LARGE for an overall plaid that loud.   Jacket separately, with solid color slacks, might work.  It does please me that they both look happy doing what they’re doing…..there are so many photos of celebs doing the premiere/photo call circuit where they look terminally bored by all the attention, and determined to ignore everyone from the press to the fans.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Jada looks much better than the model.

  • quiltrx

I still can’t stand them.  Very nice clothes on both, though.

  • nosniveling

she looks emaciated- you could cut yourself on her cheekbones.

  • Zippypie

MUCH better than yesterday.  Love him in this suit.  Her, the dress is fab, but I hate the hair.  This is miles away from yesterday’s pink sequined, ill-fitting fiasco.

  • ccm800

THIS is much better. He looked like he was about to belt out “I say we got Trouble with a capital T…” in that get up. I think i liked her yesterday one iota more than this.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

OK, OK, this time you’re right!

  • TheOriginalLulu

    Love him in that suit.
She looks great. That dress would be fantastic as a wedding gown.

  • Lina_bee

Beautiful dress, and she looks great. He…is starting to remind me of a car salesman with these suits and wide ties, though at least they fit?

  • lesmaha

This is more 9/10 than yesterday’s effort.  Love the dress, and I too appreciate the summer plaid suits!
