Noomi Rapace for Dazed & Confused

Posted on May 17, 2012

Darlings, here’s your gorgeosity for today. Prometheus star – and original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo –  Noomi Rapace straps on some killer gowns, hits her mark, stares off into the distance, and quietly tells Rooney Mara to go fuck herself. Figuratively speaking. We could possibly be projecting on that one because we LUV HUH and because this editorial is damn cool.

Prometheus star Noomi Rapace featured in the space-themed June 2012 issue of Dazed & Confused magazine photographed by Sølve Sundsbø and styled by Styling Katie Shillingford.

the grid light patterns are a little too tron for me.

      • MK03

I know, and they hide her fab face!

    • Ms. Schmidt

My god, that profile picture is stunning.  I can hardly look away.

      •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I hear you, MESMERIZING is the word.

    • Dani Colman

*edited to add: No, seriously – girl is pulling a serious SWINTON. I genuflect.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

        out-swintoning swinton, today, even.

    • Michael Rios

I can’t get over this, it’s beautiful in such an understated, nuanced way. You don’t see that as often as you could in fashion photography.

      • miagain

so true… we’re not being hit over the head with it…

    • Zippypie

      Stunning.  Can’t wait for “Prometheus”!

    • hughman

While these are all visually arresting, I stared at the damn things for a good half hour and still couldn’t see the dolphins.

    • SpcilK

This is so severe I had to get a band aid. Love it!

    • Kiltdntiltd

I die. I am conquered. I am overwhelmed.

    • ShivaDiva

She is awesome.  So much more interesting than the typical bland H-wood starlets.  Is it June yet?

    • NDC_IPCentral

Well, dayum.   That’s some photographic artistry, in my opinion.  More art than fashion, and meant in only the most complimentary of senses.

BTW, sister and fellow Bitter Kittens, minions, PUFs and members of the T Lo community, an update on my medical condition.  Great news – my CA-125 number, the tumor marker for ovarian cancer, which was 2840 on Feb. 22 [normal is 35], and 301 on April 12, was 21.6 on May 8.  I was scanned this past Friday and the radiology report was outstanding – no evidence of the tumors that had filled my abdomen three months ago.  My primary care physician and oncologist said that my abdomen was “basically normal,” and he was all big smiles.  So, next week, Friday, May 25, I’ll be undergoing cytoreduction surgery (aka The Big Open) at a major teaching hospital in Manhattan, performed by a really crackerjack gynecological oncologist.  He is just as thrilled with my tumors’ response to the chemo as my pcp/oncologist is.

I’ll be in the hospital 4-7 days; recovery at home for another two weeks or so.  My sister will be confiscating my BlackBerry so that I can’t post while in a morphine haze in my hospital bed (think of the typos…. not to mention looney-ness.  Hilarity ensues.), but I should be able to glue myself to my PC at home while recuperating.  I resume chemo cycles three weeks after the surgery.

Thanks for all your well-wishes to date; they’ve been real spirits-lifters, and thanks especially to Tom and Lorenzo for their kindness in letting me post about my uterine/ovarian/endometrial cancer battle.  Team NDC is determined to win!

      All the best,

      • Paola Thomas

        Such wonderful news :)

      • MilaXX

So happy to hear your news. I’m a 8yr uterine cancer survivor myself, so I’m definitely Team NDC all the way! Hopefully all will go well and you’ll have a speedy recovery.

        • NDC_IPCentral

Mila – it is SO encouraging to hear from, speak to other uterine cancer survivors.  I did so by chance this past weekend and it was a real boost.  Big congrats to you on your 8 year run so far, that’s impressive and gives me a lot of hope.  BTW, were you aware of the Susan Gubar book “Memoir of a Debulked Woman”?  That came out a couple of weeks ago, and the press for it was so full of grim statistics (and I was in a chemo low, to boot) that it practically had me measuring myself for my shroud.  I’m NOT reading that book – at least not until well after the surgery or maybe not after my 2nd round of 3 chemo cycles, either.

          Good for you, girlfriend!

          • MilaXX

I haven’t heard of that book. I was lucky and my cancer was caught very early I didn’t even need chemo.

            • NDC_IPCentral

Mila, here’s the link to the May 4 NYT Sunday Book Review review of Ms. Gubar’s book:  If you do a GOOGLE search of “Memoir of a Debulked Woman” you get thousands of hits.  It really was bad ju-ju for me.  You, indeed, were lucky.  I have a kissin’ cousin who also was Dx’d early some 30 years ago and only had to undergo surgery.  I actually was diagnosed within 6 weeks of starting to feel ill and a month from my first doctor’s appointment.  Mine was an extremely aggressive cancer that fortunately responded extremely well to chemo.  I’m hoping this track record continues.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

wow. fabulous. congratulations for the immediate. just spectacular news.

      • Eclectic Mayhem

It was my birthday on May 8th and your CA-125 number from that date is about the best gift I could get.  Still sending the positive vibes and healing thoughts.

      • Qitkat

NDC, beautiful news. Keep up your spirits. I relate to morphine induced looneyness, your sister is looking after you.
        Blessings on your future progress.

      • Anathema_Device

Congrats and all the best mojo from me going forward. I am so happy for you!

      • miagain

Who knew “basically normal” could sound so good!!  Take your time healing, it’ll pay dividends in the long run!  Best of luck to you!!

      • GorgeousThings

Here’s hoping you beat the little bastard and you have a long, happy, healthy life! I just got put on the 6 month plan myself, so I hope you reach that milestone and many, many more!

xox from a fellow “Big C” survivor (not uterine, breast). We be a reluctant sisterhood, but we’re all here for you.

        • NDC_IPCentral

Dear, dear Gorgeous Things – I am SO happy for you.  I remember your fight from several years ago, and the image of you in your pink wig at the PR (season whatever?!) finale with Tom and Lorenzo is a happy picture in my mind.  You were stylin’ big time, and that goes to show that even in the treatment trenches we can be our own special brand of fabulous. You’re another person whose success is an inspiration for  me.  Congratulations, most, most sincerely, and thanks for the encouragement.

I’m still waiting for all my hair to fall out – it seems to be stubborn, so I have a great-great granny thin coif that’s still too substantial to justify the Big Shave, but the brows and lashes are disappearing.  Small price to pay for the chemo’s benefits.

Sisterhood is POWERFUL (and I hale from the era when that first was uttered),

        • SapphoPoet

Glad to hear of your survival, too. I just started chemo for breast cancer. It’s so good to hear from those who have gone through it. Here’s to continued health!

          • Anathema_Device

Oh wow. That must be scary. Good luck to you and I hope you kick its ass.

          • foodycatAlicia

Very best wishes to you too, SP!

          • Eclectic Mayhem

*redoubles positive vibes & healing thoughts to include SapphoPoet*

          • SapphoPoet

Thanks, all! Am feeling pretty good; hope it continues. :)

          • NDC_IPCentral

Best wishes, girlfriend.  Keep strong and know that “this, too, shall pass.”  I’ve found that eating crystallized ginger has helped a great deal with nausea.  Hair – it’s unimportant when survival is at stake.  I’ve also managed pain with acetaminophen (most common brand: TYLENOL.  The only OTC painkiller that you can take when you’re getting stuck with needles).  Know that you can come to us in the community of Bitter Kittens (and what appears to be the growing sub-group of cancer survivors and patients here….) for encouragement.

            Hang tough, SapphoPoet,

      • Tom and Lorenzo

FABULOUS news! The PUFs and Kittens are behind you all the way, doll.

        Kitten Power!

        • NDC_IPCentral

Thank you, Tom and Lorenzo, and thanks for allowing me the forum to communicate to the T Lo community.  Kitten Power, indeed.  And thanks for your message, Lo, on my C-B site.  It warmed my heart.

        • SapphoPoet

Yes, thank you for letting me say something about my situation as well (breast cancer, currently going through chemo). I wasn’t quite sure I should but it’s good to know there is support here, too. You find it where you least expect it.

          • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

hugs to you sappho.  beat the shit out of that cancer.  xoxox

      • another_laura

I can’t come up with great words, NDC, I’m just so tremendously pleased to see your news!

      • SapphoPoet

So glad to hear that. A friend sent me a water bottle in support of breast cancer that says “Fight like a girl!” So, go to it and give that cancer what for. We’ve got your back. :)

      • NatalieD28

I’m so happy to hear!! I’ve been wondering how you’ve been but I never felt it was appropriate for me to ask. I will continue to keep you in my prayers, and enjoy the morphine! It was quite fun when I had my appendectomy!

      • Malve Lyborg

        What GREAT news! Gute Besserung!

Participated last weekend in a sponsored public fun run (only for women) which collected money against cancer. Now I’m even more glad I did that.

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Prayers headed your way.  But I wish your sister would let you post in a morphine haze anyway.

      • oohsparkley!

That’s great news!  I’m sending prayers and well wishes too.  Stay strong!

    • DaveinAlamitosBeach

Geez, this is gorgeous.  It’s both modern AND retro.  I can picture Marlene Dietrich wearing all these clothes and having Hurrell photograph her.

    • Jaime

I think Rooney did a remarkably good job as Lisbeth Salander, far better than I really could have hoped for, but in the end, I think Noomi had a slight edge on her. Rooney had the paradoxical distant/apathetic/slightly autistic cool infused with violent rages down pat, but where Noomi won out was her depiction of the need/longing for affection (from men, particularly Mikael) warring with the perfectly justified fear of accepting it, and the painful awkwardness involved.

      They *both* look fabulous, though!

      • Eclectic Mayhem

I loved both performances but actually think that the US version is a better adaptation of the book and that Mara is more believable as someone who could pass for a 14 year-old boy.

      • joe_tey83

Noomi will always be THE Lisbeth Salander for me. Rooney’s is just kind of a cute girl in goth punk get up with some issues.

        Anyhoo, GORGEOUSSSSS pictures.

    • MilaXX

DA-YUM! Love huh and can’t wait to see Prometheus.

    • Rebecca

Stripey dress photo *totally* reminds me of Richard Avedon.

    • PaulaBerman

Fierce, though to say that first pic is of a Theysken’s Theory dress is kind of a joke….

      • Spicytomato1

My thoughts exactly. Looks like a Project Runway audition reject piece.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s just the fabric from which they made the dress. very odd, but looks stunning anyway.

        • PaulaBerman

It looks very cool, but the dress itself is not in evidence.

    • Cassie

    • jilly_d

ach, fashiongasm!  actually, I think that might just be a regular orgasm.  I LOVE YOU NOOMI!  I’LL JUMP THE FENCE IF YOU RUN AWAY WITH ME!

    • MandyJane

Sometimes I don’t “get” the editorials, but this one is really cool, and interesting! She is gorgeous.

    • marlie

These are beautiful shots. It’s amazing how her body just …BECOMES… the clothes. Her face is stunning, but her body is almost indistinguishable (in a good way).

    • littlemissstrange

*heart flutter* Can’t wait to see Prometheus. Trying not to get too excited but it’s hard. Deep breaths.

    • Snailstsichr

These looks are timeless. Can’t wait to see her in Promethus.

    • Rei Carter

      I love her weirding ways.

    • StrandedFashionista

The picture with the Theysken’s Theory gown… That’s how you style something so it looks new and unique.

    • Rafiq Mohamad

Rooney who? Bitch ain’t got nothing on Noomi.

    • Louise Bryan

Very dramatic.  But they’re not really clothes, more like costumes.

    • Sonja Brisson

      Toooooo gorgeous!

    • alyce1213

Gorgeous, exciting photographs of a fascinating subject.

    • kimmeister

The styling is incredible.  Mad kudos to Katie Shillingford!

      Also, Noomi has killer eyebrows.

    • hmariec19

She is really extraordinary looking. Her face is incredible.

    • Qitkat

OH YEAH! Love the shadows and graphics. Noomi Rapace is Da Bomb.

    • LittleKarnak

Love her!!!! Can’t wait for Prometheus!!!

    • Amy Ellinger

very cool, but for me its more about the art direction and styling than her in particular.

Team Rooney for me. She got the childlike quality, and had more of the “how is this tiny little frail thing such a bad-ass???” feel.

    • Anathema_Device

So gorgeous and and Intense. Love, love, love these shots.

    • Le_Sigh

GORGE.   That Gareth Pugh is KILLA.

    • bluefish

What a wonderful way to end the week.  She is SO beautiful — I thought Rooney Mara did a terrific job — and give her props for not being intimidated — but NR remains the true LS.   The photos are truly spectral and spectacular.  Ever the sucker for lovely black and white photography.

    • LJoRey

A few of the shots remind me of America’s Next Top Model in New Zealand.

    • Debby Griffiths

      Oh.  My.  Word.

    • guest2visits

oooouuu…. beauty and dark mystery.   Can’t wait for the movie.

    • miagain

I am the number one member of her fan club (if only in my mind)…. so she’s already staring way ahead of the curve… but my oh my oh my…. this is just glorious.  She has the most interesting face, and the pictures are so damn cool!!

    • alyce1213

Staring at her for awhile now, it seems that Rooney Mara may have landed the “coveted” role of Lisbeth against many A-list contenders because of her watered-down resemblance to Ms Noomi. That, and of course her relationship with David Fincher, which by many accounts is rather weird.
I’ve looked back at this post 3 times today, I like it so much.  And I’m playing Donna Summer all day.

    • Vaniljekjeks

    • PaperPusher2

Just damn.  She’s going to give Tilda a run for her money.

    • RL McGruder

    • GTrain

      That was just…amazing.

    • prettybigkitty

I’m confused how the Theory gown was transformed into a heavy bed sheet looking cape/gown….

    • Susan Crawford

Best editorial I’ve seen in a LOOOONG time. Love the fact that it features some truly fashion-forward and avant-garde designers, and that Noomi Rapace rocked every design. She is an amazing actress with a beauty that she really owns. LOVE HUH!

    • Buffy

    • MzzPants

      …No words

    • A. Valera

I love her.  Her cheekbones could cut glass…

    • Ajuna Ariel Fenty

Yeah Rooney Mara, go FUCK YOURSELF. Killer editorial.

    • kikisayshi

      Wow. Just wow.

    • poggi

      These are amazing.

    • SapphoPoet

      These are gorgeous, stunning images.

    • newtonGOTbeaned

Wow. I have inappropriate thoughts about her.

    • Mori Clark

holy shit, one of the best editorials ive seen in a while.

    • AudreysMom

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Love Noomi and love this editorial.  I like Rooney Mara, but HATED the US remake — Noomi will always be the only GWTDT to me.

    • boweryboy

Gareth Pugh.  I totally forget about him.  I’m really surprised he wasn’t crowned the reigning badboy of fashion after McQueen died.  His work is fabulous, especially when Roisin Murphy wears it.

      I digress.  Awesome editorial

    • Lina_bee

    • understateddiva

The Van Herpen looks great from the side.  Kinda looks like a vagina straight-on.  Or a fortune cookie.  GREAT editorial though!

    • quiltrx

I love that this editorial is so sculptural, so architectural.  Not just another girl staring at you blankly in pretty clothes.  And the Gareth Pugh=WANT.

    • Katie Nolen

she looks a lot like your girl from downton abbey in these photos.

    • ccm800

    • foodycatAlicia

She’s so beautiful! When we watched Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows recently my husband said “Who is she? She’s really interesting” – which he almost never says about an actress!

    • Lilyana_F

      Absolutely mesmerizing! I love her!

    • Fifi LaRoux

      Wow. Simply beautiful.

    • Althea Dunlop

There’s something very Emma Peel about that first shot of her in the Pugh.
She’s got such incredible bone structure…

    • Aniela Marie Perry

Incredible. I love the first picture with the Gareth Pugh.

    • Rachel Weiser

Bow the fuck down. Seriously, though. There is no other Lisbeth Salander.

    • suzq

Project Runway denizens, this, THIS is avant garde.  Bookmark it.  Memorize it.  You’ll be tested on it later.

    • Emily

    • Asmith610

Kinda funny that they went from Noomi to Rooney :)

    • Laylalola

I know this is ridiculous to say, but her cutting-edge look always seems so much more … easy breezy? less contrived? than Rooney’s.

    • PeggyOC

Wow.  That is some fierce face and some nice styling/direction.

    • LuisaNL

“…and quietly tells Rooney Mara to go fuck herself.” Priceless.

    • mjude

    • Deborah Lipp

    • Irina Ryabchuk

So glad to see her get more recognition – she is hypnotic.

    • Fatima Siddique

She is so unbelievable. I have been on pins and needles anticipating Prometheus because I can’t wait to see her in it.

    • Sisyphus .

Solve Sundsbo, eh?  Damn, he knows how to do lighting and texture. I love how it sorta has the _Tron_ feel without being at all like _Tron_. And he managed to make what seems like an unfortunate shiny fortune cookie on the model look incredibly chic and amazing.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Gorgeous. Love the light and shadow play.

    • Nicole Walraven

looooove! holy hell those were stunning.

    • piecesofconfetti

      Love this editorial.

    • crush on you

Oh, WOW. Speechless. This is my kind of thing. Lovelovelove.

    • FunButNutz

Can I say “Holy Fuck” without getting into trouble?

    • Dawn Sinclair

The photography is all a bit Nick Knight though – the dresses are awesom

    • Merridith Kristoffersen

She looks FIERCE!  Love it and love her.

    • marilyn

      Edgy girl, edgy clothes.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

    • ThaliaMenninger

      Noomi Rapace pwns Rooney Mara.

    • JennaMarieS

This girl is pulling a Swinton that only Tilda herself could top. WERQ.

    • JennaMarieS

This girl is pulling a Swinton that only Tilda herself could top. WERQ.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I loved Noomi Rapace in the Swedish films of Larsson’s books, and I’m especially liking her in that Gareth Pugh number here!

    • Lilak

      Oh! Yeah!
That’s how you do an editorial.
      That’s how you do “edgy.”
      The end.

    • Ass Kicking Adviser

Wow! Especially that Iris Van Herpen. Wow!

    • MilaXX

Yeah I was caught early because I spent most of my 20’s & 30’s dealing with irregular cycles which is why I saw my gyn regularly. They new my previos paps were slightly abnormal and were pretty vigilant about monitoring me. I had to get a pap before being prescribed a refill of the med that I took to regulate my cycles and so they found caner early. Not a complete “debulking” as the author puts it, but all my reproductive organs and lymph nodes were removed. Nothing had spread so, once everything was removed there was no need for chemo.
Don’t think I could handle reading that book though. Too many people in my life have battled breast, ovarian and uterine cancer. It puts me in a dark place.

    • Joanie Hunt

She’s just so stunning on her own! In the editorial? She becomes FUCKING AWESOME!

    • TieDye64

      Love her. Fierce as shit!

    • Lisa

What, these old things?  I just toss ‘em on to run around the corner to grab the paper and a diet Coke!

    • Shawn EH

Dueling Lisbeths, coming soon to a runway near you!

    • kolokOlchik

    • Diego!

Lisbeth in da house!!! Amazing pictures! I love her, Noomi was a great Lisbeth in the original Millenium saga. You go girl.
