Nicole Richie in Emilio Pucci

Posted on May 22, 2012

Oh, no, no, no, Miss Nicole. This won’t do at ALL.

Nicole Richie attends 40th Annual FiFi Awards in an Emilio Pucci dress paired with Brian Atwood pumps. Clutch by House of Harlow 1960. Meus Jewelry.

Emilio Pucci Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Isabeli Fontana

Late-sixties Streisand never wore mullet skirts and  she sported cat-eye makeup, not smokey-eye. Must we teach you EVERYTHING? Should’ve consulted a drag queen or two before attempting this one.

This is a costume party, right?

I dunno, I thought she looked pretty… I’m not a fan of the mullet dress, but this is about the least offensive one I’ve seen.

      • Aniela Marie Perry

I do too and I’ve never really been into her looks OR mullet dresses but I’m kinda digging it.

      • janinedm

That could be because at her height, it’s less a mullet dress and more of a train.

      • janinedm

      • deathandthestrawberry

I think her hair looks fantastic, and I like the neckline of the dress. It really suits her. Maybe this should be a Scrolldown Fug  instead.

    • MightyMarshal

I have to say, I actually like it. I almost feel like it needs a necklace, but the hair is so dramatic and attention pulling that I feel like a necklace might have looked cluttered and been overkill.

    • schadenfreudelicious

too tiny a gal for that much mullet…..

    • Carla Axtman

I actually love this. I think she looks sexy without being slutty. There’s a whole lot of refreshing in that.

    • petalfrog

She’s a tad short for this… I imagine Linda Evangelista in this. However, it’s fun and she does look happy and healthy.

    • belfebe

Love the hair and makeup.  But girl, that is not your dress.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I love this…for Nicole.  Tired of the hippy-chic bit.  She looks pretty and dressed up.  And this is one of the very rare times when the dress looks better on a petite girl, than the leggy model (looks like maternity lingerie on the model)

    • AWS

Didn’t Madonna wear the white version of this during her “Like A Virgin” performance at the VMAs in the 80s?

Anyhoo, I’m not hating this.  It’s not boring and she’s rocking the dress AND the shoes…

    • Imasewsure

It’s funny though… if you could crop her from bangs to hips, it’s the prettiest I’ve ever seen her look… unfortunately that kind of cropping is still illegal in civilized societies… as is, it is too Streisand-y for words….

    • Sara__B

Her hair and makeup look great, and the dress would have been great, too, IF it had been all long or all short. That’s the most extreme mullet differential I’ve seen yet!

    • Gemi

I’m not a mullet dress fan, but I like this look. Good on her to lengthen the front of it and put her hair up. Sexy and classy all at the same time. I’m a fan of a fellow tiny girl who disregards anyone who thinks she’s too small to pull off a look like this.

    • Zippypie

Hair is too tall and mullet is waaaaay too long.  I hate these mullet dresses.  I just want a pair of shears to chop it the eff off.  She’d look so pretty without that ridiculous train.

    • hughman

      Needs more Mantilla.

    • ConstanceGrace

I think she looks great. I don’t know how it can be a Streisand costume when the dress and makeup are all wrong. So the hair reads Babs, I don’t think everything else has to, too–it keeps it from being a costume (which it doesn’t seem like to me anyway).

    • UglyCasanova

      Too much dress!

    • SpcilK

She looks like black Goldie Hawn from the neck up. Not a fan of the mullet skirt, but she looks rather cute.

She looks like black Goldie Hawn from the neck up. Not a fan of the mullet skirt, but she looks rather cute.

    • MoHub

At least it’s longer in the front than it is on the model.

    • MoHub

At least it’s longer in the front than it is on the model.

    • Judy_J

Would be a good look if not for the mullet skirt.  The train in the back ruins the dress.

    • MinAgain

I kinda like it, and her make-up is beautiful.

    • pattyw

Cut off the mullet and I think she looks sensational.

    • marilyn

That is too much dress for her.  Is it a negligee or a dress?  I thought her hair was morein the Dolly Parton genre.  Nicole is a beautiful petite woman.  She needs to avoid stuff like this.

    • judith traherne

c’mon, what else would you wear to the FiFi awards? this is perfect.

    • crash1212

While not a fan of the mullet dress, at least the one she’s sporting is longer in front than the model’s. Yikes! I love her hair and makeup. Nobody rocks the full bangs like Nicole does.

      • giiiirrrr

Yeah, her eyes are just the most incredible color – she should always play them up and the bangs and makeup do just that.

    • Clydette Wantland

Who’s funeral is she going to?

      • calimon

        or Gothic wedding…same diff.

    • Clydette Wantland

Who’s funeral is she going to?

    • Kerry McCombs

I would have given this a WERQ!

    • TheOtherChristina

Initially I felt like this would be a WERQ if the skirt were all one length. Then I saw the last picture and I decided that it’s a WERQ regardless. That hair is really working for me.

    • Tafadhali

I was digging this so much until mullet skirt. I…just don’t understand that trend.

    • TieDye64

This might be good IF this weren’t a dreaded mullet dress. A black lace mullet dress at that.

    • DaveUWSNYC

I disapprove of the trend of dyeing your eyes to match your hair.

    • Delysia LaFosse

I actually think this would be adorable if the hem was even. I think she pulls this era off really well.

    • LilyPad

I really like the top 2/3 of the look so much that the mullet skirt didn’t bother me as much as it usually does. I think she is IN!

    • Lina_bee

that is so not her dress. The hair is cutely retro, tho.

    • Lina_bee

that is so not her dress. The hair is cutely retro, tho.

    • Melanie

I think she looks great!  Certainly better than I’ve ever seen her look.  It’s a Mad-Men-inspired look – part Barbra, part Betty Draper in Italy.  She had the taste to lower the front of the skirt a bit.   She looks grown-up and sophisticated.

    • ballerinawithagun

She looks great great, just cut off the train!

    • mrspotts66

       love the hair and makeup.
front of the dress is too short.
back of the dress is too long.
      she looks really good, though.

    • Sarah Veenstra

I actually like this, but maybe it’s the lighting or something – the color of her eyes – literally eyes, not eye makeup – is freaking me out.

    • Fatima Siddique

That’s a lot of dress for such a tiny gal

    • Cassie

The hair and makeup are pretty fab and really play up her looks, but…ugh, mullet dresses. Especially ones like this, which are essentially a minidress with a train. I like the bodice a lot, though.

    • formerlyAnon

Might have been cute with an even hem above the knee.

She’s pretty, here. And her hair looks very good. But knowledgeable hair-watchers, how much of that hair is hers? I thought she used to have just dreadfully thin & mistreated looking hair. I find it hard to believe this kind of turnaround is biologically possible.

      • MilaXX

My guess is none of the bun that we see is hers and maybe half of the bangs came from India.

        • formerlyAnon

Thank-you for your educated guess. I wonder about her hair every time I see her.

    • Qitkat

At 5’1″ she is far too petite to wear this hideous black peacock dress.
      She has beautiful eyes though.

    • sashaychante

I like her hair.  I really don’t get mullet hemlines.  Does anyone remember the ’80s when bike shorts with a mullet skirt/train were popular?  I’m scarred by this recollection, so perhaps this is why I don’t get the mulletress.

      • Pennymac

        ARG! Flashback!

      • MilaXX

YES! Didn’t Demi Moore or somebody wear one to an awards show? Can you imagine the fun we would have on these blogs if TLo was doing this in the crackstatic 80’s?

        • sashaychante

It was DEMI!  That is the flashback I get whenever I see the mullet hemline.  ACK!  The 80s were so WACK!

    • norseofcourse

Honestly, when I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was Charo.

    • carpediva

Cut the mullet and I think she’d look stunning.

    • merciblahblah

I actually love her hair and makeup, and would love the dress if it weren’t a mullet. All short, and I’d be on board with the whole shebang.

    • AnaRoW

      I think she looks cute.

    • PrunellaV

      Hurrah! The new Pia Zadora!

    • blue

I disagree. I saw this outfit on another site and thought she looked fabulous and that she’s finally got her sh** together. She’s not emaciated anymore or too young and immature looking. She looks like a stylish young adult.

    • Willis Cramer Kliefoth

I was scrolling down, thinking she looked really pretty, wondering what TLO was talking about, and then I saw the mullet. I don’t understand, I just don’t.

    • THEAR

I like it. The only mullet-skirted outfit I’ve seen that doesn’t make me cringe … it’s a bit modern-day Empress Josephine.

    • SewingSiren

Not a fan of the mullet hem. But Nicole wears it much better than the model.

      • BrooklynBomber

I know – it’s awful on the  model, isn’t it? I love Pucci, but this dress, yeesh. . .

    •árez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She’s far from being my favourite person in entertainment, but I kinda dig her choices on the red carpet. In the end, she never goes for safe, and I can’t not respect that

    • Tashina Savage

I love this look on her.

    • sherrietee

I’d love that dress if it weren’t a mullet.  Seriously love it.  Just lop off the back half and gimme.

      • Pennymac

I agree. I was dismayed to see the mulletted back. As a short cocktail dress it would rock!

    • kikisayshi

      It’s pregnant Snooki!

    • LambeeBaby

In the first photo, approximately 1/4 of her look is taken up by her hair…arrangement and it looks odd. I would love the dress without the “party in the back”.

    • Catherine

I think I love this – which is the first time I’ve ever said that about a mullet dress. She has a way of making things that I otherwise hate totally work.

    • quiltrx

      WTF are the FIFI awards?

      I like her hair.

The dress looks like it started as a good idea that went crazy along the way.

    • egl48

      Very pretty.

    • Sophie Collier

I like it from the waist up.  Her hair looks chic and the makeup is nice too.  But that skirt’s got ta GO.

    • MasterandServant

Actually, I think she looks pretty and healthy and happy. The best of the mullet dresses that I have seen- I think it suits her frame

    • Sara Munoz

Haha! IMO she stopped just short of Pia Zadora. Nice try, Nicole!!

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Oh look, Angie Dickenson’s Slutty Friend.  OUT.

    • MilaXX

So close. Not a train wreck look, she just had a few missteps. In fact if the dress didn’t have that mullet train I would cosign it completely.

    • Beth Ann

In that outfit and styled that way, she looks like an actress from a 60s Italian giallo film. Brava!

    • Dawn Sinclair

She looks like a cast member on GCB

    • Rebecca Jay

Beautiful.  And good god, those eyes!

    • Eileen Duffy

      I kind of like it!

    • BayTampaBay

      I think she looks great.

Cut the mullet hem off the dress and I think you may have a WERQ.

    • Katie Heim

Bah. It looks like a modern Babs. She’s looks totally cute. Come on boys…

    • jjfg

Is this from the Elvira collection?  At least she didn’t wear the cross…

    • Nancer

I think she looks beautiful! And I am not a fan of mullet dresses, but this is really pretty on her. Sorry, guys, I can’t join your snark on this one. Please don’t revoke my unborn fawn status!

    • Ann Martina

I think she looks really feminine and pretty

    • Chris Sutton

Looks like Paula Abdul and Barbra Mandrell had a baby.

    • EEKstl

From the knees up I think she looks beautiful; love the hair, dress (minus the hemline, which I despise) and make-up.  Yes, it’s 60’s redux, very Casino Royale (the Peter Sellers version), but I’ve always loved the style of that period so maybe I’m biased.

    • Karen Stephens Bassett

Her feet make me cringe in pain.

    • Alyssa Caruso Ivins

oh em gee!!! THATS WHY I LIKE THIS! hahaha because she’s channeling fanny bryce/barbra streisand. i get it now!

    • TheOriginalLulu

I absolutely LOVE the hair and the big earrings and the make-up on her and the dress is awesome until we get to the mullet part. This would have been so cute had it been a short babydoll dress. Might have even been a WERQ for me. Dammit, Nicole!

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

From the neck up she is absolutely WERQing it.  I don’t love the mullet dress, but I have to say, she’s pulling it off quite nicely.  Had she cut off the mullet part of the dress and it been a short length it would have been a total WERQ!

    • VicksieDo

      I love this look.

    • TomBord

and she’s of interest because she………….??????????????????????????????????????

    • Ashleigh Boutelle

hair and makeup look fabulous. She needs to be a good 5 inches taller – or better yet, the dress should have been altered for a shorter person – because she’s got the figure and it looks so much better on the model.

    • amanda lynn

      love the hair!

    • Jellybish

The dress is okay, but the hair and makeup added about 15 years to her age.

    • Lilithcat

What the heck are “Fifi awards”?  Best dressed poodle?

    • piecesofconfetti

      I love it!

    • Rand Ortega

Just watched “Funny Girl” last night so this is quite retro chic to me. The proportions on the dress are…interesting, but not offensive. The beading is gorgeous. The styling is a bit wonky w/ the smoky eye, but the hair is spectack!
Sorry TLo. As always I bow to your expertise, but from a layman’s perspective I love it.

    • kat89

I think she looks cute, and I normally hate mullet dresses.

    • Pablo Ulloa

      babydoll on crack

    • Randy Noak

I’m kind of loving the hair/eye makeup combo. It really makes her eyes very pretty. Just hate the dress.

    • lilazander

I detest mullet dresses, but this dress has a potential when the mullet is edited. Beside, Ms. Nicole looks great. Gosh, she cleaned up so great.

    • texashistorian

She looks really good. Dress is okay, thought at the bottom it’s wtf. She gives off an air of mystery, which is exactly what she should do, because every time I see I ponder the mystery of WHO is she, and WHY is she famous, and WHAT has she done?

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      I think she looks FAB!

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      I think she looks FAB!

    • mmc

I fairly certain my 15 yo daughter would flip for this look, especially with the big ole cross the model is wearing.  Sigh.

    • sweetlilvoice

It amazing how good she looks now. Motherhood agrees with her.

    • samo_samo

I think she looks cute. I have no issues with this look.

    • PeaceBang

Charo! Hey, um, is Nic Richie still famous?

    • LinXGUA

My, that’s an unflattering dress! emphasizing the wrong areas… it looks lazy, outdated, tacky  and sad. How the designers at Pucci approved this thing? It’s like they hate women or something.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She missed the Dark Shadows premiere by a week or so.

    • kvlm

I agree, I think it’s her height and her hair.  This would probably work better on a giant person.
