Natalie Portman in Christian Dior

Posted on May 11, 2012

Natalie seems suspicious of all of these photographers, as if she’s about to accuse one of them of murder.

Natalie Portman attends New York City Ballet’s 2012 Spring Gala at David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center in head-to-toe Christian Dior.

That’s some serious side-eye there.

She’s not quite on our Celebrities We Irrationally Hate list because she’s never inspired an emotion in us as strong as “hate.” We just always got the overwhelming impression that she’s a huge phony. Now, that’s a little silly as complaints about celebrities go, since it’s safe to assume that the majority of them are phony. After all, they chose to work in an industry that’s entirely about artifice. But something about her phoniness really grates on our nerves.

But we’re sure she’s a lovely girl and our disdain is because we’re jealous or something. There, Natalie-defenders. We saved you the trouble.

And just to show how very kindhearted and open-minded we are, we’ll go ahead and say that she looks really, really pretty here. We’re not a hundred percent on board with the yoga hair, but the dress is beautiful and it looks great on her. We desperately want to go up to her and straighten out that leather bow at the bustline, but that’s just our fashion OCD talking and besides, she’d probably slap us. And she looks like a HARD slapper. It’s always the little, demure ones who can pack a wallop.

Navy is a great color for her.

  • sagecreek

So not loving the leather halter strap, dress would look much better without it.

    • Agreed!

    • Plether, surely? She’s vegan, isn’t she? But agreed about the dress looking better without it.

      • siriuslover

She is Vegan, and Dior has accommodated her before by making vegan shoes, so I am sure that the strap is definitely not leather.

I think the dress looks great on her, but her posture says “I’m gonna kick your ass.” And I don’t like the way she’s holding her clutch.

        • It looks like she’s got bricks in it and she’s trying to find a comfortable hold, doesn’t she?

          • siriuslover

Yeah, she kinda does. I hold heavy books that way.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Agreed – the entire strap and bow need to be 86’d.  And for bob’s sake, can these designers stop with the peplum dresses?

I don’t have the irrational hate for NP – I think she looks good here, and I love her posture.  And her earrings.

  • bloggertobenamedlater

You may want to straighten the leather bow, but I kind of want to remove it altogether. Otherwise, I think she looks great.

  • Violina23

Is it me or does she look a bit uncomfortable here?  Maybe that’s part of the weird vibe she gives off sometimes because it’s like she’s trying to play the role of “relunctant starlet” even though nobody would buy that she didn’t dive into show-biz head-first?

    • Ceur

She has the same face I have when I’ve gone overboard on the Chinese buffet, without having the matching Chinese buffet belly.

    • She always seems to look uncomfortable when doing red carpet. I think it’s kind of endearing that she’s so awkward.

  • That final pic is a killer

  • Eh, in her defense, the last time she was really at a ballet I’m pretty sure she ended up with schizophrenia and a mirror lodged in her abdomen.

  • Trisha26

I am one of the NP haters. Irrational I know, but she makes me cringe, on screen and off. In the top photo she looks vaguely like Glenn Close – cringe-worthy in itself. I would like this look better without the bottom tier and without the waist bow.

    • Sobaika

Mine is more of a Rationalized Distaste.

      • sagecreek

Same here, Sobaika. All my hatred is reserved for La Goopster.

    • bellafigura1

She always looks like she’s sneering to me.

  • i know what you mean about her being a phony. She says extremely foolish and ridiculous things about social issues, and that’s the whole deal about her dancing in Black Swan being mostly done by a double and her Oscar campaign being all about her doing all the dance work herself.

but yes she looks really pretty here

    • As I understand it, it was a combination – she does have a ballet background and trained rigorously for this role. She did the arm/upper-body work herself (not easy) and the double was used for pointe work, leaps, etc. Not that I’m a Natalie lover but do want to give credit where it’s due.

    • Sobaika

“She says extremely foolish and ridiculous things about social issues…”

Exactly this. I used to try and ignore it because she’s been so young for most of her career, and I’m sure I said stupid things when I was 19. But it’s lasted long enough that I wish she’d commit to an academic life and never give another interview again.

      • MilaXX

and she flip flops from vegan/vegetarian and omni. The gal just bugs

        • Glammie

Is she ever an omni?  I thought the flipping was between vegetarian and vegan.

Don’t hate her, more like mildly dislike.  She seems so humorless.

          • MilaXX

mmm, I thought I recalled her eating flesh, but the internet says she alters between vegan/vegetarian. I dislike her in small does, but when she’s on a full court press like in the black swan days it shifts to full on hate.

          • Glammie

I think she’s been a vegetarian since she was a kid.  I remember the whole Top Chef thing because she was an ovo-lacto during the show’s taping, but by the time it actually ran, she was a vegan.  Until she wasn’t.

Though to be fair, I think being pregnant may have had something to do with un-veganing.  Being a pregnant/nursing vegan is tough, particularly if you become anemic during pregnancy.

          • MilaXX

I can see that. I would love to go vegan, but find it a lot more challenging than vegetarianism.

          • Glammie

I did vegan for a week once–it took a lot of planning.  I’m an omnivore, but eat vegetarian a good deal of the time–almost by accident–but vegan meant having to really build flavors and balance foods to get that sated feeling.  Eating out was also a lot dicier.

          • MilaXX

I agree. I can easily eat vegetarian, but I’m not sure I could manage vegan on my budget

        • I flip flop too and I work at a vegan restaurant. Wasn’t aware that you couldn’t change your mind, or just enjoy your food – even if it has cheese and sometimes you don’t eat cheese.

          • MilaXX

I care less that she flip flops and more that she comes across as a bit arrogant about it.

      • hellomissmadeline

I am vaguely aware that she’s one of those “socially active” celebrities but I don’t really know anymore than that. What does she say?

        • Sobaika

She has a habit of sounding remarkably out of touch. My favorites:

“I’m constantly aware of how I’m being seen, which I think a lot of people have normally, but it’s sort of exaggerated. I see myself out of body all the time. I was reading W.E.B. DuBois’s stuff in school, and I was like ‘Oh my God! I’m not black, but I know what it feels like!’”

“When I was in school I took a class with Cornel West, who’s this amazing African-American Studies professor, and he would say that in America there’s this sort of racism against Asians where they say, “Oh, you know, they all look alike.” He believed the reason is that Americans don’t take enough time to look. Yet that’s actually proved beneficial because you can play someone who’s Japanese, as you do in Memoirs of a Geisha.” – to Ziyi Zhang

I also can’t love anyone who openly signed the Polanski petition, but that’s just me (and it includes quite a lot of Hollywood elite).

          • charlotte

             Goodness! Didn’t know that.

          • hellomissmadeline

Ouch. Remarkably out of touch indeed. She sounds like a sheltered white girl thinking she has transcended some barrier by picking up a book or taking a class and now has all this insight on experiences far removed from hers.

          • Alisa Rivera

WOW. She’s officially moved into my Bish, Please column.

  • Amy

  • RzYoung

I love the dress, HATE HATE HATE the watch though, she’s totally being paid to wear it isn’t she? Mind you, I just irrationally hate watches all together. Gorgeous dress though.

    •  I hate the watch, too!! It seems to say “I’m only going to be here the absolute minimum amount of time that my publicist is forcing me to stay.”

  • Paigealicious

Wasn’t she like, not “doing” Dior anymore after the John Galliano debacle?

    • Lochery

That’s what I was wondering but I guess it became less of an issue when he was fired?

  • Peri7473

i actually like her, but so what.  thing is, i thought she was a staunch vegan and didn’t wear leather.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yes, I’ve heard the same thing. She was even a guest judge on Top Chef once and they had to prepare her a vegan meal.
I’m guessing that bow isn’t real leather.

      • Glammie

I think she was a vegetarian for the TC meal, though she went vegan shortly thereafter (and then back again.) The actress with the killer food limits was Zoe Deschanel on Top Chef Masters–vegan with allergies–no gluten and, I think, no soy.  All she needed was a nut allergy and she’d sort of be the ultimate menu challenge.

        • TheOriginalLulu

Wow, I missed the Zoe D challenge. I can just imagine the grumbling and whining that must have ensued when the challenge was presented. They always act like it’s the end of the world and like a chef shouldn’t expect to have to know how to work around dietary restrictions, food allergies and whatnot.

          • Glammie

Well, it was the first season of Top Chef Masters and they were a pretty gracious group for the most part.  Michael Chiarello won with a quinoa pasta–there was some quibbling because he used a boxed pasta.  Hubert Keller was also in the top and came up with a grape gazpacho, which, I think, had almond milk.  He’s based out of San Francisco, so he was used to food restrictions.  Let’s see and Oprah’s chef went home for mashing strawberries with purchased rice milk “ice cream”.  I thought dessert was one of the easier courses for the challenge–why not make a sorbet or a nut-milk “ice cream’ instead of buying it?  Would have been 20 times better and it’s not hard with the right equipment.  You can even do some sorts of cakes.

          •  That annoys me, too. Lots of people have food allergies! A friend of mine enjoys coming up with three course meals that me and two friends of mine can all eat, and between the three of us we are allergic to milk, wheat, eggs, mayonaise, oranges, onions, oysters, coffee, paprika and nuts. And still he manages to do it every time! If a hobby chef can do it, I’m sure so called top chefs can do it too.

  • Anathema_Device

I think she looks lovely. Nice eye tonic after Lindsay and Johnny. I agree on the hair, though.

I dig her because she’s smart and outspoken, but I know she can grate on some people’ nerves.

  • Very pretty is exactly it. I love this look except, of course, the bow.

  • Amy

“She’s not quite on our Celebrities We Irrationally Hate list because

THANK YOU. I am a member of the same club and we are few and far between. Everyone else is just vigilant about insisting we are wrong. As if they are constantly drinking some form of “Natalie kool-aide”….

    • RebeccaKW

She just seems like she’s so boring with a stick up her backside.  Like someone would tell a joke involving dogs and she’d interrupt to lecture on animal cruelty.

  • histrogeek

She does look as though one of the photographers is about to jump at her. Weird.

  • nannypoo

I would remove the leather details altogether and do something different for a belt. And give her a comb.

  • janetjb

Why are all buns super tight or messy? Isn’t there a middle ground for buns?

  • fungstyle

i think the impression of phoniness is because she really seems to hate the life that comes with being a famous actress. she seems like she’d be more comfortable as an academic or something like that – to me at least.

    • msdamselfly

I agree  To me she just seems very guarded and uncomfortable with the intrusion into her privacy

  • Pants_are_a_must

She looks a bit like a stylist grabbed her after 5 sleepless nights with the kid and stuffed her into this dress.

I’m sure it’s not actually the case, but this is what I think of when I see her: superkalifraglistictiredlittlemommy.

  • Tracy Edmunds

Go look up the hardcore rap digital short she did on Saturday Night Live. It will make you like her a whole lot more. 🙂

  • jw_ny

Now I just want to rip the leather bow right off…not adjust it.  Otherwise I like the look, including the “yoga hair”

I never thought one way or the other about liking/not liking her…she’s always been one of those nondescript actresses that pretty much just does her job and stays out of the limelight and tabloids, for the most part.

  • G

I love the color of her eyes!

  • G

I love the color of her eyes!

  • Brigitte Todd

Aw, I’ve always had a soft spot for her since “Natalie’s Rap” with the Lonely Island. I like juvenile humor. Anyway, this dress is lovely. Love a navy and black combo.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I know somebody who was outside as she arrived for some tv appearance and was able to get a picture.
She’s giving that exact same side-eye in that picture. I was even like, why is she giving you such a stink-eye? He was like I don’t know, I even asked nicely if I could take her picture and she just gave me this nasty look, so I took the picture anyway and said thanks. It would have been funny if she had slapped him.

  • egl48

My stepson is so in love with her and has been since he was 11 and that Star Wars movie came out with her in it.  She always seemed like a kind of boring grind to me, but man oh man does she do it for him.  He’s a math/science guy, so maybe her appeal is to brainiacs.

    • twocee

My boyfriend has had a thing for her ever since she was Amidala.  She will always have the geek love I think.

  • Judy_J

I’m not real crazy about the tiered skirt, but I do love the bodice and color of this gown.

  • jtabz

I can’t decide if the way that she’s rumpling the skirt of her dress with her awkwardly-posed purse is endearing or annoying.

  • I love the look but the way she is holding her clutch is distracting me for some odd reason.

  • OhSayNow

Why is she carrying her bag like a football?

  • JaneDC

She just looks like she wants to go home to her baby and her baby daddy. What is that bag she’s carrying? It looks dark and cumbersome. As for the watch, it makes no sense with the dress. I accidentally forgot to take my watch off for my wedding (long story there) and although it was a small gold one, there were pictures where it looked like I had another occasion I didn’t want to be late for. Ditto here.

  • MilaXX

I get fake from her and Zooey so I don’t blame you one bit. The look is good, but the pose is awkward. She looks more uncomfortable up there than Michelle Pieffer did in yesterday’s post.

  • Candigirl1968

Maybe it’s just her way of posing, but she doesn’t look comfortable (almost like something is poking or pinching).  The color is pretty, but you guys are right, that hair with that kinda fussy dress is a bit off.

  • SpcilK

Not sold on the dress, it’s a pretty color on her. However the bow looks like a last minute thought and I could do without the peplum and the layerd tiers of fabric. It’s a Do Not Dior for me.

  • I agree with all of this. Especially your dislike of Natalie. There is just something about her.

  • msdamselfly

What a gorgeous dress– she looks beautiful.  I think she has really good taste.

  • I totally get the phony feeling too. Thank you TLO for making me feel like I am not alone in my likely irrationality, especially when everyone loves her.

    • GTrain

       I’m with you guys

  • bluefish

Love this dress.  She was great in “Closer.”  The hair is a messy mess.  She’s beautiful but can look hard.  The dress is to die for.

  • She looks pretty in this.  I don’t dig the man-watch she has on.

  • marilyn

The dress is interesting because it would be attractive without the longer underskirt.

  • Emerald Storm

“It’s always the little, demure ones who can pack a wallop.” Omg you guys crack me up, never before has fashion been this much fun, love it!!

  • I think the phony rub has to do with her being an intellectual and knowing that she is play acting, not only knowing but feels above it all while lacking the courage to walk away from it.  Whereas other celebrities are not even aware of the phoniness.  Most buy into the phoniness as being real.

    • EEKstl

I agree.  Some celebrities are just uncomfortable with the game.  Natalie is a highly intellegent, cerebral person who isn’t in love with the “phony factor” but loves her craft and I”m sure loves the success that’s come with it for her.  That said, I agree she does come off as a bit “snobby” as if keeping the wheels of celebrity in progress are below her.  LOL, maybe they are.  But there are also certainly actors known for their intellegence (like Jodie Foster) who somehow manage to be both intellegent, real and private.

  • Nicole Chubb

I think we need to add more men to the Irrational Celebrity Hate list. I feel bad for always hating on the ladies (Natalie has recently creeped on my list, and I used to love her!). I just think it’s weird that my list is all women and no men – the feminist in me is cringing.

    • Will Smith
      Matt Damon
      Ben Affleck

      • sagecreek

        *raising hand on Ben Affleck*

Also Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.

        • Leonardo Alves

          Tom Cruise
          Tom Cruise
          Tom Cruise

  • LuisaNL

“And she looks like a HARD slapper. It’s always the little, demure ones who can pack a wallop.” you guys crack me up!

  • The way she’s holding her clutch so close to her hip makes it look like she thinks the photographers are after it.

  • Kate4queen

Love the color on her, hate the bows.

    • suz72350

I’m not fond of the bows either. If the strappy thing around her neck and the bows went away it might look better.

    • Pennymac

      Too many bows!

  • Rebecca Johnson

Yeah, she never really inspired any feelings in me other than “oh”, but I have to say, I think she has one of the most beautiful faces in Hollywood.

    • TieDye64

      My sentiments exactly.

  • TieDye64

She and Ginnifer Goodwin should have a contest to see who gives the best stink-eye.

  • Yoga Hair?! HA!

  • Jecca2244

she has a little of that Kristen Stewart-ness to her. Like she doesn’t quite realize the photographers are part of the price of fame.

  • girliecue

She looks like a feral jungle girl who was found only 6 months ago and is making her first public appearance. Clearly she’d rather rip your throat out with her bare teeth than smile at you. Unfortunately for her she’s so pretty she rarely looks bad – even when giving the Death Scowl – so no one’s going to stop taking snaps of her anytime soon.

T Lo, you slay! I want to put HARD slapper on my resume!

  • Somebody get that woman a valium!  She would look fantastic if she didn’t have her clutch gripped so hard against her that she ruffles the dress.  Is someone trying to steal her purse?!

  • formerlyAnon

Either it is a marriage of the right girl and the right dress, or evidence that there is genius at Dior – because that dress ought to be an overwrought mess (go ahead – describe it out loud – layers/tiers, peplum-tier hybrid, pleather straps, bows) and it looks lovely on her.

  • BuffaloBarbara

It’s a great color on her, but I don’t think the boxy shape of the skirt is terribly flattering to her.

  • RocknLox

She wouldn’t slap TLo, she’d just shout I’M THE SWAN QUEEN and make a dramatic exit.

  • VicksieDo

Hmm, I always found her to be anything BUT phony.  She went to college, she works the method, she’s a dedicated vegetarian, I just think she’s the shit. This dress is TO DIE.

  • cleep1000

What is she doing with her purse?? She’s ruining the line of the dress. But she’s gorgeous and never done no one any harm, as far as I know. Yes, you are just jealous. 😉

  • Lina_bee

Huh. I am not a fan of this Dior and I don’t think the shape is doing anything for her. Of course, in my head, she’s still 12 years old and knocking my socks off onscreen — and maybe that’s the trouble?  She always looks like a kid playing dress-up to me instead of a woman working the hell out of the style she’s developed.

  • Laylalola

She (or her handler(s)) has a really great grasp of what works on her. I think she looks quite glowing here.

  • guest2visits

I just want see how pretty this dress is without the bag mashed against it like a weapon she’s ready to deploy.
That is a seriously pretty dress, and she looks beautiful in it .

  • Lisa

I wonder why she’s so tense.  Like, she looks amazing and gorgeous, but it’s hard to focus on that because she just seriously needs to unclench.

  • My fashion OCD has me wanting to whisper to her: “your clutch is caught in your bustle!”

Still, a really pretty dress and the navy and black combo looks good on her.

  • Sophie Collier

Pretty dress but she looks petrified.  Breathe, sweetie.  And fix your ruffle.

  • There have been a lot of starlet’s with “yoga hair” in your red carpet photos lately. I hope that trend ends. It’s like they need a best friend to tell them the truth. I wonder how many of them peek at blogs like yours to see what’s written about them. More than would admit it?

  • love this dress!  i think she looks beautiful.

  • i really like the hair; softer hair looks good with the look.

  • aristida_girl

Poor thing, it looks like her feet are killing her….(either that or her fish died, or something…)

  • Neverbuynewclothes

Just needs a slightly deeper lip shade to balance the drama of the navy dress.

  • Joey Melliza

she’s just looks that way because she’s wondering if Galliano still had a hand making that dress

  • quiltrx

She’s so lovely.  The hair looks like it started out great and got mussed in some serious wind.  I’ve been a fan since “Leon”, so even her missteps are always going to be okay with me.

    • Dhammadina

Me too  –though have you seen Thor? She looks embarrassed for long sections of that execrable film. And she doesn’t exactly rock a lumberjack shirt.

  • will this ugly hair trend never end?  i dig her eye makeup on such a pretty face.  but if i see another black dress…..

  • Prom Queen….

  • I’ve followed her career for awhile and she is a decent actress. I know what you mean about the phoniness though, but her fandom is interesting. They are pretty devoted to her and have been for awhile. For a period, I didn’t think she would seriously stay in acting because it does feel that sometimes doesn’t want to be in the business anymore.

  • That bow is driving me bananas!
