Michelle Obama on GMA

Posted on May 30, 2012

We haven’t checked in on FLO for a while.

First Lady Michelle Obama makes an appearance on “Good Morning America” in NYC to promote her new book “American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America.”

That skirt is super-cute, but the matchy shoes are making our eyelids twitch (especially when she’s got a matchy necklace up top) and that totally incongruous belt doesn’t suit the look or flatter her at all. Tsk. This could’ve been a knockout.

Oh, Shelley. We’re still here, aren’t we? After all our hard work. Details, sweetie; details.  You should think about that Secretary of Taste idea we floated once before. We’re ready to heed the call, if you need us. It’s for America, after all. And the children. We’d only need a small staff of eleven or so. And some sewing machines. It’ll be like Project Runway meets The West Wing! Won’t that be fun? We’ll walk down hallways very quickly, taking your measurements and giving rapid-fire monologues while ordering you to change your shoes. We can think of no higher calling in life. You can pay us in pieces from Nancy Reagan’s old china.

L.O.V.E. the skirt. But that belt…oy.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Those are great colors for her, but the belt is all wrong.

      • mshesterp

I actually don’t mind the belt, but it’s TOO. DAMN. HIGH.  Yank it down, Mich!

    • Sandra Richards

Skirt is Talbots of all things.

      • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Huh, I knew, I’ve seen it somewhere!

      • Nora Mulllin

She wears tons of Talbots clothing. Often for “official stuff.” They don’t just make granny clothes anymore.

        • Beardslee

I wear a lot of Talbots clothes.  I wish they were more interesting but at least Talbots is interested in dressing middle aged women, a rare phenomenon.

  • Baditude

I’d watch the hell out of that show. Get on it boys.

Great color, but over deployed by having it in the skirt, shoes and necklace. And that belt…wrong.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

I know, that sounds like a show worth watching!

  • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

    I would watch that show.

    • Spicytomato1

      Me, too. Totally.

      • out for a walk

        Me three!
*crosses fingers that this is exactly that TLo was filming recently and couldn’t talk about*

    • EveEve

Watch it?  Hell, I’m sending my resume post haste – that staff of eleven surely has room for an ace researcher-cite checker.

  • Jessica O’Connell

LOVE the skirt and would have been fine with the shoes had she worn a different necklace and burned that belt. Still love you though, First Lady Obama!

  • Deb_Lynn

    this has to happen!

  • NC_Meg

I would gladly picky my sewing machine back up to join you two in the Secretary of Taste offices!

Oh yes, Shelly. That belt is all kinds of wrong. That shade of blue looks great on her, though!

  • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

I don’t mind the matchy shoes, but the belt is bad. It doesn’t even look like the dress is constructed to need a belt.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

Heinous is a better adjective for that belt.

  • nannypoo

Good idea but wrong shape, wrong belt, and I hate those heels. She is still the most fabulous FLOTUS ever, but she can do a lot better than this.

  • MilaXX

She wore a similar look on The View (don’t judge) yesterday. Pretty dress but a far to wide belt. I think she picks them for the sitting down factor because they both looked very nice was seated.

  • Anathema_Device

I second the motion to bring T Lo to the White House as Secretaries of Taste!

I saw a skirt almost exactly like that the other day, and I can’t remember where.  The matchiness is fine with me, especially for public figures like a first lady.

But dear god, did she win that belt bench pressing Biden?

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Actually, it was for the one arm deadlift using Newt Gingrich.

      • mountainFashionista

        Oh. My. God.

I love comments that literally make me laugh out loud!  Thank you!!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

          Just doing my job, ma’am.

      • Anathema_Device

She should have a big gold buckle on the front in that case!! His head alone is a ton!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She did, originally, but thought it was too focus pulling.

      • aimee_parrott

Jeez… I knew she had guns, but FLOTUS is strooooooong if she can lift Newter.  Of course, his head’s full of air, so that probably helps lighten the load ;)

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And of course, hot air rises.

  • JasmineAM

I think she looks cute. Her skin looks flawless! HOWEVER, Mrs. O, I do love you and all, but please soften up those brows! Every time I see them I can’t help but think of Ursula.

    • Beth Gardner

I think she looks caraaaaaabbbby (crabby)

      • AudreysMom

Not crabby but I did wonder if she’d just left the dentist.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jennifer-Krumel/774655640 Jennifer Krumel

The proportions are off. If that belt/skirt sat a little bit lower, it’d really flatter her. I want your show. Please, make it happen.

  • Beth G

That show would go well with my idea.  We elect the president by process of elimination through a reality show.  Those running for office are subjected to “situations” each week, and have to deal with them.  Then America votes one off a week until we have a winner.

  • beebee10

I totally SEE you 2 in that job! FLOTUS would love you and sass you right back.

I love everything but the belt…..she’s been knocking it out, but everybody’s gotta stumble a little, no?

  • http://twitter.com/iraki86 IraKi

Oh the belt…the horror THE HORROR!

  • Judy_J

Cute dress ruined by that awful belt.  I can forgive the matchy shoes and necklace, because I played with Barbies, and that’s what we did back then.  But that belt……that belt needs to be wrestled to the ground by Secret Service and taken away in chains.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

    One of Shelley O’s c

  • enchanted216

“You can pay us in pieces from Nancy Reagan’s old china.”  LOVE!

    • Wendi126

      Better than Nancy’s good china

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    did she piss off antoine?

  • http://twitter.com/nova1000 sarah

I think the proportions look better on her when she’s sitting: http://a.abcnews.go.com/images/Politics/abc_michelle_obama_gma_show_ss_thg_120530_ssv.jpg
I don’t mind the belt at all, actually.

    • mountainFashionista

Wow, you’re right!  Do you think that was on purpose, or a happy coincidence?

    • judith traherne

      It’s a sitting-down belt for sure.

  • golspie

The belt”s too high and I still think exposing her ‘Hulk smash!’ arms is a mistake.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

hate the necklace w/ a deep & passionate fire, hate the shoes almost as much. love the belt [apologies], love the dress–though acknowledge they dont really work together.

please hire me for something if you get the job. i dont care what.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martha-Hicks-Leta/1059884884 Martha Hicks Leta

This skirt with a tailored blouse that hits at the waistline (and therefore doesn’t need to be tucked) and a fabulous set of grey or yellow pearls. Line item vetoes for the belt and the droopy hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberly-Burke/100002384493067 Kimberly Burke

The belt, the belt, OMG THE BELT!!

You could star in a reality show showcasing the search for your staff.  You’d need several days of off camera prelims just to weed through all of us Newborn Bitter Fawn Kittens. :D

  • Jennifer Rosen Heinz

Yes.  Ditch the belt, and the shoes should be either midnight blue or red.  And I am officially using my fairy Jew mother wand to make a TLo show a reality.  Zing!

  • MzzPants

Whoever handed her that belt needs to be slapped, then fired.

  • http://ICFashionChic.tumblr.com/ ICFashionChic

I like the outfit but feel that yellow pumps would have pulled the look together a bit better! And they would’ve brightened up the outfit a bit more!

    http://ICFashionChic.tumblr.com

  • LuisaNL

    I’d totally watch that.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

She really likes that high waisted look, and I think we just have to accept it.  The belt might have worked if it weren’t making it practically an Empire waistline.  Oh well.  She can do no wrong in my book.  She is true to herself and she knows what she likes.  I can’t argue with that in her case.

  • hughman

She has on that face your mother got in the grocery store when you kept sneaking popsicles in the cart until she finally grabbed you by the wrist and hissed in your face “I AM NOT PUTTING UP WITH THIS RIGHT NOW”. Then you both walked to the car and she was trying to look calm but you know once that car door shut you were in so much trouble.

  • HeatherD9

I absolutely support the veto on her accessories.
That said, I  must humbly disagree with TLo about one small thing— Appropriate compensation,  don’t ask for Nancy Regan’s china…  Hold out for the good stuff.  Y’all deserve something from the Kennedy years.

I can see it now,  Michelle performing a walk & talk tour of the White House & grounds, TLo quietly coaching off camera.  Then, several years later, pulling out something fabulous; a vase perhaps or a tea service from the European tour.  You could sweetly suggest something wedgewood — like that cute little skirt.  Ooooh, better, a gorgeous gewgaw & that allows our gents to go on about that “Elusive Blue” in the emeralds.

Thanks for the moment of FLO,
    :D

  • ryaddictive

i kinda like the belt.  hahahahahah

  • Spicytomato1

I love all the elements, including the much-maligned belt, except for the necklace. The shoes and skirt are both so pretty that I don’t mind that they match. But it’s the proportions, as someone else mentioned, that throw everything off kilter for me. Too high-waisted. But the colors flatter and her hair and makeup are flawless. Love!

  • Lina_bee

Oh giant belt of woe, this is not your outfit! Stylist FAIL. :(

  • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

I know you’re against matchy shoes but those shoes on their own, oh my god, I love them.

  • CQAussie

Secretaries of Taste – that should just be a permanent post for you two.  Walking down the halls power giving SNAPS UP and OH HONEY NOs.  It would bring the country together.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I want to live in a world where Secretary of Taste is a thing that exists.

  • kimmeister

The matchy accessories don’t bother me (although I would’ve preferred the necklace in coral), it’s just the hugeness and placement of the belt.  Super-wide belts belong on long-torsoed women like me.

  • jilly_d

I’m gonna defend that belt and even the matchy shoes.  I could do without the necklace.  GAWD we have the most spectacular First Lady.

  • uprightcitizen

She looked so much better on Jon Stewart last night. The white house job would be fab … you could always sleep in late, because if “The West Wing” is accurate (and of course it was!), all work and conversation takes place in the late afternoon and early evening, when the light is lovely.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

What a horrid book title. Editing, it’s important! This outfit also clearly displays an editing problem, that giant belt makes her look like a hunchback. Some bright, complementary jewelry and shoes a hair darker would have gone a long way.

  • aimee_parrott

You know, it’s hard to imagine Shelley saying no if you pitched her exactly the way you wrote that last paragraph!  Love it.

  • littlemac8

Why, oh why, does this short-waisted woman insist on wearing wide belts that only emphasize how short-waisted she is?  I don’t get it.  TLo would make the perfect fashion intervention team!

  • guest2visits

Well no… I think I’ve changed my mind; I like this on her. Even the belt is not that bad.

  • nancymae

Are there any photos of the dress without the belt? It would be interesting to see what the designer originally envisioned because I’m pretty sure that belt is making him/her die a little. Otherwise, she looks great and the matchy matchiness isn’t that bad.

Tiffany Blue is very much in, well it has been since I got my new beautiful TIffany blue reading glasses, from Tiffany & Co.  :)

    • Susan Crawford

I am ready for new glasses, and now I know exactly what I want! How cool are YOU, Basket??? Way cool with your Tiffany specky self!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

         Thanks to VSP!

  • boweryboy

I don’t mind the matchy-matchy here.  What kills it for me is that belt.  It throws off the porportions of her body giving her a short stumpy look on top, long and leggy on the bottom.

A different belt and a less chunky necklace and she would be a knockout.

  • Lisa

“Secretary of Taste” would be an awesome job, and you boys would knock it out of the park!

I do like this look – the matchy-matchiness doesn’t bother me.  Her skirt should have been steamed – it’s a bit wrinkled in the front.

  • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

Liked her better on Daily Show last night.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

She looked great on the Daily Show last night (or the night before, I’m tired).

    • turtleemily

I was going to bring that up, also. The shade of blue was perfect on her!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

She looked great on the Daily Show last night (or the night before, I’m tired).

  • Synnamin

I dunno – I like the belt. The cutout leather echoes the skirt pattern rather nicely.

  • Synnamin

I dunno – I like the belt. The cutout leather echoes the skirt pattern rather nicely.

  • judith traherne

I love everything here, matchy-matchy an’ all, even the belt because it does look good sitting down.

  • GorgeousThings

That belt should be deported along with the Syrian diplomats.
The rest of the look is okay. Not great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

I hate to say it…the look seems too young or too fifties (ouch, that hurts). Love her. Not the outfit.

  • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

aside from the matchiness, i really like this! belt n’ all!

  • Julie Fountain

She wears that belt a lot and I hate it every time. But love that skirt and if you ignore the belt, she looks fresh and springtimey.

  • understateddiva

SO OVER that high-waisted look.  Love the color, and that’s it.

  • altalinda

Hate with a blinding passion the way that belt looks on her.

  • quiltrx

This was the opposite of scrolldown fug!  It got better as I scrolled…that skirt got a little gasp out of me.

But gurl?  That belt is SO bad.  Totes adorbs if she had lost the belt and necklace (I’ll spot her the shoes because they’re really cute).

  • Flora O

Agree with everything you’ve said (particularly the Secretary of Taste), but could you please show some respect? She’s not “Shelley,” she has a title: The Meesh.

  • alyce1213

I love this woman to death, I always love how she looks, but this outfit it not good — all the accessories are unforgivable.
She was with the bitches on The View yesterday and looked much better than this.

  • Sophie Collier

Looks like the skirt rode up a bit, and the belt is making it worse.  Hilarious write up, fellas!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

    yuo.

LOVE West Wing meets Project Runway. BRING IT!

  • Susan Crawford

Mrs. FLOTUS definitely needs you, boyz. I absolutely LOVE the skirt and top – or maybe it’s a dress? – but that obtrusively wide belt just cuts her at all the wrong places and spoils the entire outfit. The matchy necklace is actually kind of fabulous in a retro way, but the shoes have GOT to go.

When you get to the West Wing Brother Sewing Room, and have your HP Design Suite, and the Mood Fabric Outlet has replaced the White House Bowling Lanes, just remember that FLOTUS will NOT be wearing a dress made of discount party supplies, burlap bags, or hardware store items. And remember to use the {insert sponsor name here} accessories wall thoughtfully. Now, GO-GO-G0 and Make it WERQ!

    • 3boysful

You cracked me up.  You think we can get St Tim to do the running commentary?

      • Susan Crawford

Oh, wouldn’t that be perfection? Tom, Lorenzo AND St. Tim of Gunn – now THERE’S a reality show with wings!

  • TieDye64

The skirt is darling, but that belt. It pains me.

  • MichaelStrangeways

Love Michelle but why is she dressed like Marge Simpson impersonating June Cleaver? Waaaaay too cutsey pootsy and matchy and those full skirts are NOT her friend.

  • siriuslover

her dress for the Jon Stewart Show was AWESOME

  • http://twitter.com/amndad amanda lynn

what color shoe should she have gone with?

  • Sue_Asponte

I think she thought the outfit was too expected, and wanted to kick it up with a bitchin’ belt. I like the intention. In fact I’d like to see the outfit the belt works with. I mean, that’s a beautiful skirt. But I prefer killah-Alexander-McQueen-wearing First Lady to proper-J-Crew-wearing First Lady.

  • ChristySchiff

I like the belt.  I feel like it picks up the floral in the skirt.  And I think the matchy-matchy seems matched on purpose, if that makes any sense.  Plus, this is still chic-er than any FLOTUS we’ve had since Jackie (though Nancy’s little power suits were kind of cute).

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Seriously, guys, that would’ve been an AWESOME show! :)

  • fursa_saida

I would die over that television show. Die.

  • 3boysful

That last paragraph is one of your best ever.  Love you guys, and would TOTALLY watch that show!!

Does Shelly O ever get to wear sandals?  A dressy heeled sandal, maybe in yellow?, would’ve been cute here.  I like the idea of the belt, but it’s too wide.  I would hate having something like that right under my boobs.

  • afabulous50

    Too twee…

  • Eva_baby

Oooh, so close.  If the belt was narrower and the shoes brown then this would have been a knock-out look.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Actually the belt is what is killing if for me.  It’s way too big and busy for this outfit.  I don’t mind matchy match when well executed and I think this is a pretty good job.

  • Call me Bee

I love the whole look–including the belt.  A fun addition to a matchy outfit.  BTW–I don’t mind the matching so much.  It harkens back to the 60s vibe that everyone is sporting these days.  And back then–you were just not properly dressed if your pumps, handbag and jewelry didn’t match.  Perhaps FLO can bring matching back.

    • Lilithcat

      I like matchy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Nothing sadder than squandered potential. You made me cry, Shelly. Cry.

And TLo, while you’re making staffing requests, perhaps a hot ginger Secret Service Agent?

  • TheOriginalLulu

Enh, here’s the thing. I think it’s a cute dress, but it looks a little juvenile to me. It would be better suited for one of her daughters. I still think she wears those full skirts a little too often. I understand she wears them because she’s bottom-heavy, but they’re just not as flattering as the sleek looks TLo recommend for her. The belt looks like something she dug out of the closet at the last minute and just strapped it on without taking a good look in the mirror.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Belt & necklace are killing me. Way past eye-twitch.

  • Hermione_Granger

If the belt were narrower, it’d be a win for me.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_WKSM57KFWUGRMKPDUW4SPL3GDM Kathryn

    Hilarious!

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

I actually really like the belt, but I think the proportions are weird. The belt is creating a sort of shelf for her boobs. If the skirt sat lower, and the belt was on her hips….I don’t know.

I really don’t think short tops look good on her though.

  • GypsyHowell

If I were her, I would never wear a wide belt.  Or maybe never wear a belt at all.  She’s much too short-waisted for that to work.  I’ve never liked anything that emphasized where her waist is.  The sleek look is so much better for her, IMHO.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

i watched that segment.  i adore her but the segment was really strange.  and it went on and on, likely because Shelly is adorable and is the first lady but holy hell.  how much time can we spend watching little kids put dirt into wee pots and then put seeds in them?  sheesh.   i loved her skirt though.  the belt – not so much.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CQPXLNCBM5CZSHZZXJDHPVFS7E Buffy

I like all of it, just not together.

  • ballerinawithagun

Project Runway meets West Wing. Sign me up!

  • VanessaDK

Im hysterical! Funniest riff in ages…west wing meets project runway…rapid fire monologues…nancy Reagan’s china.

    You guys are amazing!!!

  • Carlodog

Don’t mind the matchy shoes but hate the matchy necklace.  I agree the belt looks too high, but she is very high-waisted.

  • PeaceBang

Oh, how I love you two! And oy on that outfit, Mrs. O! Your boobs should not be resting on your belt.

  • http://www.phirephoenix.com/ Phire

I would watch the hell out of that show. Just FYI.

  • HK4Seven

The belt.  Lose the belt and life is good.

  • Lisa Salmon

the skirt is too full, the belt is too wide.

  • BigShamu

I’m curious what the Secretaries of Taste would wear to their first day in the White House?

  • gabbilevy

I’m already in DC! Can I be the official Department of Taste reporter?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

Laughing so hard at Secretaries of Taste. Just dying. Oh my lord.

  • Qitkat

That just might be the best reality show idea EVAH!

  • Kathleen Gillies

    Yeah, lose the belt.

Re: this show you are talking about… you would be like the Olivia Pope of fashion faux pas.  I would totally watch that.

  • letter_M

No no no.  I’m a huge fan of hers and 75% of the time I think she looks great….but this looks like an ensemble I saw at JCPenney while I was shopping for a housewife character for a TV show.

  • nancymae

Thanks for the link. The skirt is cute and in stock!!

  • bellafigura1

I think the shoes-and-necklace (especially that granny necklace, ugh) pairing is what ruins the look.  It needs a pewter or gray suede shoe, and I actually love the belt with this look — gives an edge to the saccharinity.

  • pdquick

    A) The silhouette is wrong. It looks chunky.
    B) It’s too match-matchy.
    C) Who gives a shit? She still looks fantastic.

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

Secretary of Taste :-) Excellent idea!

  • bitterk

Love the outfit but that the pursed lips ruin the look.  Smile chica, you are First Lady of the USA!
