Michelle Obama in Rachel Roy

Posted on May 14, 2012

FLOTUS and SLOTUS got a little sunny for Mother’s Day.

Michelle Obama hosts a Mother’s Day event for the military families at the White House in Washington, DC in Rachel Roy.

Honestly, it looks like SLO is wearing one of FLO’s old outfits, what with the cardigan and awkwardly placed bow and all.

But we have to say, FLO’s dress is really gorgeous.

She needs to wear that color yellow ALL.THE.TIME.  j’adore

    • It really does pop on her, and she does look ecstatic.

    • JosephLamour

This lady is so lovely. Will we all be forced to see blue, white and red FLOTUS pantsuits again if Romney wins?

  • And the word RADIANCE was the first thing that popped into my head. She looks spectacularly wonderful.  (I kinda hate her a little though, for being able to wear that shade of yellow without looking ill).

    • Well, her makeup *is* perfect! (not detracting from the natural radiance, but the whole package is lovely with this outfit).

      •  So good, it looks like no makeup at all. Which should almost always be the goal, IMHO.

    • I think that smile is her best accessory, cliche as it may sound. She looks wonderful!

      •  She has a beguiling grin.

        • The little boy in the blue looks totally captivated, doesn’t he?

          •  Yup, his first real crush, happening as we observe.

          •  Yes, that picture absolutely gripped my heart!

          •  I am so touched by this picture. Like, he doesn’t care she’s the FLOTUS. To him, she’s just a warm human being and he feels he can trust her. Utterly heartwarming.

      • eight_of_nine

        Such a dazzling smile!

    • ballerinawithagun

I wish I could wear that color!

  • Jellybish

    God she is so beautiful.

  • our flotus is so cute.

  • Little_Olive

I wish the yellow had been a tad richer, less “primary”. But it’s a great dress. Great hair too.

SLOTUS’ (LOVE the name, hope you don’t get in trouble for it) is not that bad. I mean in contrast with Mrs Bush or previous Flotuses could have worn.

    • Plus, honestly, pretty much every woman who isn’t at least as tall and good looking as Michelle is going to look a bit frumpy standing next to her. Especially if she’s about 20 years older.

  • BazoDee

WOW! She is just stunning perfection in this! I love grey and yellow and the colors work fantastically for her!

  • She looks absolutely lovely.

  • Pants_are_a_must

SHE is completely gorgeous, which is displayed more firmly by the dress.

  • SapphoPoet

    Sunny side up!

  • I love the yellow and grey and the shape is perfect. Well done Shelley!

  • Just a question here about bright yellow. It looks gorgeous on Michelle Obama, but does it work on Jill Biden? I’ve got that same pinkish pale complexion and I’ve never been convinced that yellow is for me. (Another problem with Biden’s dress is that it’s difficult to distinguish the skirt from the background curtain.)

    • Sobaika

Dr. Biden’s cardigan looks a bit paler, which works better for her complexion as opposed to FLOTUS’ Crayola shade. Try it out, I’m of the opinion that most people don’t wear enough color 🙂

    • The slightly lemony-er shade of her cardigan I think is lovely on pink-skinned blondes.

  • Chris Dennis

That’s a whole lot of yellow in that photo. I really wish that background were a different color because it is distracting. She looks amazing in the action shots though. <3

  • She looks amazing. And that hair!

  • cmb92191

How pretty.  Just an comment:  I heard that my nephews upcoming wedding colors are yellow and gray and I inwardly groaned.  Now that I see it worn well, I have hope for family photos….

  • Great dress.  Great face.  Love the pic of her dancing with the little boy in blue.

  • Rebecca Johnson

She always has such an effortless joie de vivre. Plus she’s like seven feet tall and stunning. Sigh. Girlcrush on the first lady.

    •  Joie de Vivre is the perfect descriptor for our charming First Lady.

  • good god, she is so lovely!  wow.

  • Stunning. I especially love that photo of her laughing holding the little guys’ hands.

  • drdirection

She looks so happy!  And not a I’m-wearing-sunny-yellow kind of happy.  Genuinely happy.  Slotus sure is purdy lady, too.

  • MoHub

We need to re-elect Obama in November just to keep Shelley O. around.

  • Anathema_Device

Great dress on her! Hair and makeup are fab, too. She is just laughing and glowing in every picture. Love it!!

  • introspective

I LOVE Michelle on principle. And then to see her in this?? Im SWOOOONING. She looks fabulous. She just brightened up this overcast day here in NYC for me…

  • suzinrva

I love her candid, smiling, joyful face in every pic!

  • Sophie Collier

That’s her color (well, one of many) for sure.  The skirt fabric is a bit stiff for all those pleats around her belly and butt, though.  Kind of balloons out in a way most ladies would prefer it not too.  But this is a very classy number.

  • MissAnnieRN

How about the lok on her daughter’s face (Sasha? Malia?)? It is SUCH a familiar look from Michelle. Amazing how mannerisms like the way I look at you from under my brow get inherited. My only quip with this other lovely color, neckline, frock, look, is that I don’t like what the pleats are doing to her midsection. Otherwise, lovely.

    • Char Crop

       Sasha was not there.

  • nancymae

SLOTUS looks like she got her hands on Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak and cut it up to make her outfit. I can’t recall ever seeing someone disappear into the background as much as she is in that first photo. Jill, next time, go for green

  • It is so refreshing to see our First Lady always (when appropriate) so full of apparently true joy! She just makes me smile when I see her smile. And in these photos it is so appropriate. She and that sweet Cambridge girl are the best things to happen to world leaders ever!

  • unbornfawn

Not anybody’s typical political wife. She’s strong, confident and joyous. How lucky are we to be caught in her beams of radiance!

  • MilaXX

Flotus looks great. Slotus usually looks better than this her outfit is kinda of sad.

  • Lina_bee

    I love her to pieces.

  • I’ve been reading too much Cheezburger Network because the word “SOON” popped up in the third picture, referring to her daughter,  in my head.

  • kimmeister

Love the triple-cowl neckline and the yellow/gray combo on her.

  • CassandraMortmain

What a shame that they’re posing in front of that yellow curtain, which makes them both fade into the drapery.  But once Mrs. Obama steps away, she looks fabulous.  Great hair and makeup, too.  Jill Biden looks awful.  That is not her color.  And the dress and cardigan are far too twee a look for someone her age.  She’s slim and in great shape, but I think she often dresses too young.

The Obama daughter (is it Sasha?) really looks thrilled to be there – not. Is she a teenager yet?

    • Char Crop

       Sasha was not there.

  • kikisayshi

I adore this woman in so many ways.

  • suzq

Michele’s dress is nice and all, but Sasha’s dress is a knockout!

    • Char Crop

       That is not Sasha.

  • JackieOBlue

She looks great, I swear she looks younger than she did when she first became FLOTUS.  I love her.

  • Town

LOL that’s some serious side eyes those children are throwing out.

Jill Biden’s dress would have looked better MINUS the bow.

  • quiltrx

I LOVE that our FLOTUS seems to genuinely enjoy these types of events.  She’s not stuffy and stand-offish, she’s right there with the people.  And her smile and enjoyment of those around her make her even more beautiful.

  • SO beautiful. As a woman with the same shade of skin and a dress in the same color, I appreciate how fresh and cheery this color looks on her.

My colleague happened to be at this event and happened to be in a grey dress and happened to get a photo of herself between FLOTUS and SLOTUS. And they all looked divine.

I remember last year when the Queen wore a spectacular yellow dress sometime after The Wedding and I thought, “That’s going to be the color of spring!” I was a year off, but hey. Still so pretty.

  • mmc

She is gorgeous!  The third picture down?  Love!  I had a little Mary Tyler Moore-flashes-a-big-smile flashback.

  • granddelusion

FLOTUS is wonderful, but SLOTUS sounds a little dirty. (I mean the words, not the women.)

  • Spicytomato1

I think this might be the best FLO’s hair has ever looked. LOVE it. And yes the dress is indeed gorgeous.

  • chitowndg

I think the FLOTUS dress should have had a softer yellow for the top, the only (slight) critisism though.

    How cute is Sasha.

  • Love it.

  • aimee_parrott

Wow, she’s gorgeous.  That color yellow is perfection on her.

I’m a little scared that SLOTUS’s top half became detached from her bottom half, because her bottom half is totally blending into that curtain and she looks like a floating torso.  Unsettling.

    • greyhoundgirl

So that’s what happened to her!  I wondered where she was–I was thinking maybe magician’s assistant.

  • Susan Crawford

What a great color for Mrs. O! Love the draping on the bodice, and the cummerbund-style waistband. The fabris of the skirt is exquisite, as is the slight bell-shape that subtly hides her hips.

She looks absolutely fabulous – comfortably chic, dressy without fuss, and the color is DYNAMITE against her skin tone. Love that she eschewed jewelry in order to let the dress really pop, too. I’m making it official: Michelle O. is my girl-crush! Sigh.

  • SLOTUS looks like Krystle Carrington in the first picture.

  • Beth G

Is that Melia in picture #3?  Whichever daughter it is, is clearly giving the “My mom is embarrassing the CRAP out of me right now” face

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

She looks radiant.  Love her so much!

  • greyhoundgirl

She is so fabulous.  Not just the dress, or how good she looks, but her whole self.

  • Judy_J

    She looks radiant…..FLO, not SLO.

  • AWS

Slotus is looking Linda Evansish.  Good on her!

  • Stubenville

Stunning and effortless looking – kudos Shelly O!

  • Pennymac

#4 is the best, most enchanting smile ever. How refreshing!

  • msdamselfly

    SLOTUS looks great, as always

  • Beautiful!!!

  • That sunny yellow looks lovely on her. Like her hair as well.

  • ugh…

  • Lisa

She looks so sunny and pretty!

  • formerlyAnon

Smiley Face. I enjoy these photos because all the adults in them look as if they are genuinely enjoying the moment. Which is what you’d hope an event for military families would be  – but a White House event could so easily be a bunch of anxious parents trying to keep their kids quiet, tidy, and still.  Fortunately, it looks like someone actually took into account the fact that kids would be there.

  • It reminds me of her inauguration outfit, which was almost the same color. Lovely.

  • Great dress, but weird how they’re both wearing yellow AND match the curtains (almost) in the first photo.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

    Love it.

  • butterflysunita

    I love her.

  • DesertDweller79

She looks lovely!  Can’t believe how good she looks in that shade of yellow.

  • bellafigura1

Dr. Biden, rare total misstep.  FLO, zowie, she’s a rock star.  That dress!  I wish I could see the shoes!!

  • fursa_saida

I love Rachel Roy’s designs; I’m so glad her brand awareness seems to be growing.

  • guest2visits

    Really nice.

  • someone did something to her hair and it’s looking amazing!!! I don’t know if she got got some new weave or something, but it’s awesome.
