Katharine McPhee for Glamour Magazine

Posted on May 11, 2012

Katharine McPhee is a beautiful young woman with an amazing set of pipes. Unfortunately…

Katharine McPhee is featured in the June 2012 issue of Glamour magazine photographed by Nicolas Moore.

Katharine McPhee has the personality of room-temperature oatmeal. We appreciate the attempt, Glamour, but there was no way she was ever going to do anything but limply stand there and wait for her picture to be taken. The girl’s no model. She’s barely an actress – and even then, we’re being kind.

Yes. This is us, “being kind.”

So … Smash. One or two people have asked if we’re going to write about it anymore. Probably not. Reason? It sucks. No, really. It’s like a slow motion car crash at this point. Every moment and in every scene, the suckitude quietly increases. We heard a rumor that the second season will be an almost-total reboot, that very little of what’s going on right now will continue over into the next season, and that the cast will be dramatically reduced. That sounds like a good idea to us. We’ve said all along that we thought a workplace drama set in the world of the theater had tremendous potential, and we like pretty much all of the major cast members (even if the writing isn’t serving them well), but there’s an awful lot of secondary characters that need to go (ELLISELLISELLIS) and others who need to never speak again (JULIA’S MOUTHBREATHING SON), before this show can ever find its footing.

I worked for years in a musical theatre, and yeah, it is a great concept, but this show is so godawful it is unwatchable.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally agree with you guys on all points.  UGH to the hair.  BAH to the styling.  And F’ing KILL ME to the high waisted stone washed jeans!!!!

    • Pennymac

I may have worn those to the roller-disco a few decades back. Allegedly. All photos of me in said jeans may or may not have been destroyed….

    • Lori

My first thought when I saw the picture of those horrible pants was, “Those better not be coming back”. So awful.

      • kimmeister

They somehow look even worse than the ones in the 80’s.

        • Lori

Well, when we wore them [shudder] the crotch at least fit correctly. I have no idea what’s going on with McPhee’s and I don’t want to know.

    • http://twitter.com/ryenerman rynerman

Was coming here to say the same.  McPhee, whatever, but I. JUST. CAN’T. with those pants.  Jesus, leave those in 1986 where they belong.

  • Paigealicious

I really like the first dress!!

  • RebeccaKW

Those jeans are ridiculous.  Burn them quickly.  And that close up shot doesn’t even look like her.  This is bad all around.

  • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

And I broke up with ‘Smash’ at the same time as you guys did. What a waste of a great idea.

    • fursa_saida

“Waste of a good idea” is exactly right.

  • http://twitter.com/hdl_b Heather Barkman

Couldn’t agree with you more, on all counts.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Audreybot would wear that first dress better. Is it related to that all-black one she wore a while back?

  • Anathema_Device

I totally forgot I had Smash recorded on my DVR. So, there ya go…

I think Debra Messing has been great in her role on Smash. I do hope they salvage it because it could be so good.

And yes, Ms. McPhee is no model.

  • gabbilevy

All the personality of room-temperature oatmeal. That just about sums it up. Still watching Smash, mostly because I’m holding out (increasingly desperate) hope that it really will get better next season.

  • uprightcitizen

To be fair to McPhee, she’s A LOT prettier than this editorial has made her look. Whenever I see an editorial shot this way, with that kind of hair, lighting, and airbrushing, I don’t blame the person being photographed. I blame the art director and the photographer. You have to really go out of your way to make someone as lovely as Katherine McPhee look this bad. Sure, she isn’t a model, but that’s why you shoot a person like her as a person, not as a mannequin or a robot (which is what they’ve done).

  • MK03

PLEASE tell me those absurdly high-waisted jeans aren’t coming back.

  • http://roughmenstandready.wordpress.com/ Dejah Thoris

The mom-jeans are giving me seriously bad flash-backs of 80s. I think I need to go lie down until they go away.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

the weirdest thing about that is that they arent quite mom jeans. despite the stonewash, theyve got a really unusual & almost interesting cut [i’m iffy around the crotch part, though, if you will]. but somehow this shoot is, indeed & opposite of most shoots, making them give off a mom vibe. very odd.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

She tried her very best to pull off a Mona Lisa smile. TRIED.

  • hughman

These look like auditions for the new musical “MACYS!”.

  • MilaXX

There’s hope. I heard a vague rumor that says Ellis finally gets his comeuppance. Not sure what that means, but any smack down of this character would be welcome. As for McPheee, I find her pretty and talented as a singer but the blandest of bland otherwise.

    • Qitkat

      Ellis */shudder*

Let’s throw him and Ashley (Revenge) into a pit and see which one comes out unscathed.

Agree on McPhee, initially I was rooting for her, but I’m back in the Ivy camp.

Half the time I forget this show is on.

      • MilaXX

I think Ashley would win by hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Linda-Ritchie-Unger/1497801615 Linda Ritchie Unger

That top pose looks like an ad for Katherine McPhee Barbie.

  • Judy_J

I’ve never seen one second of “Smash”, so I’ll take your word for it that it sucks.  This photo shoot is as boring as snot, as well.

  • Diane_Chambers

I hope Anjelica Huston is still around in Season 2 and that they actually use her to the best of her abilities.  I love her; she’s the main reason I gave the show a try.

Anyway, yeah, McPhee kind of looks like Jaclyn Smith, but she needs acting classes to get to Smith’s level (I’m not saying Smith was a master thespian, but she was competent).

  • http://twitter.com/zomgcandy Rosa

I stopped watching too. No dramatic break-up. Just didn’t really care to keep watching. Didn’t care what happened to all the characters.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

did you guys read the article in, i think, the new yorker that said pretty much what you have also been saying? something maybe about hate-watching this program after having been deceived by its initial entrance into the viewingworld…..

  • In_Stitches

She’s got the bod, that’s for certain and she’s doing an alright job from the neck down.  It’s just that expression…maybe she needs to smize.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

Except for the last shot..these are horrible.. what did they do to her head!?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I physically cringed away from that second photo. She strikes me as the beribboned, barrel curled kindergartener in a cupcake dress and lacy socks for picture day. I’ve always been pretty, and that’s always been enough. Look at me! Serious bubble.

  • MzzPants

It’s a shame because the first episode rocked.  I’m still watching, mostly because I don’t get cable, but am amazed they got a second season.

  • Renee Bender

You said it TLo!  I started out watching Smash with high hopes, but ever since the episode where Debra Messing’s character is saying, “NO, PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE,” and the guys she had an affair with (can’t even remember names at this point) decides this means, “Yes, please unbutton my shirt,” I’ve been unable to watch.  It’s so bad and I really can’t deal with the lack of focus on actual THEATER coupled with really bad personal life drama.  I digress…

    • Lilithcat

Showing up in the middle of the night in your pajamas is probably not the best way to communicate “no, please leave me alone”.

  • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I still like Smash though the number of plots involving someone cheating on their S.O. is getting kind of ridiculous.

If her hair were done up a bit nicer in these photos, I think they’d have looked a lot less lifeless.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

And the thing is from Idol days I know that girl has some gorgeous hair!!!  What have they done!?!

  • cleep1000

I have a question. What is the origin of “mouth breathing” as an insult? I’ve heard it for a long time, but never quite got what it was about. For me personally, with my sinuses being frequently stuffed up, I’d die without a mouth to breathe with. Just curious if anyone has some insight into this. Seriously.

    • minnye

I think it’s kind of mean too.

    • http://6things.blogspot.com par3182

I’m no etymologist but I’d guess it’s an offshoot of “slack jawed”, indicating a perceived lack of intelligence, but it’d probably have to be combined with a blank expression (see jeans pic above as an excellent example) for it to really hit home.

  • minnye

I’d love to have that first dress, with the sides lined.

  • sweet_potato

    room-temperature oatmeal is so right.

  • Lina_bee

I sort of love the first dress in a cracked out sort of way (ideally lined), but omg acid washed high waisted jeans, noes!

  • damnfinecupofcoffee

I want to think I still like Smash because I watch it everyweek and I go in hoping it will be really good and then aftwards I don’t think about it….I think I’m in denial

  • drdirection

Too bad they made those pics to not look like her.  She is lovely without all the photoshoppy business.

  • Snailstsichr

I think her hair and makeup are terrible – or were they trying to make her look plastic?

And we shall never mention those jeans again.

  • Laylalola

Just last night I realized I’m on the verge of dumping Smash. There were two unwatched episodes on my DVR, and it almost felt like a burden to start the first one. Then I stopped halfway through. I haven’t outright deleted them — I so want to like it much more, for some odd reason — but that’s just SUCH a bad sign for a TV show.

  • joe_tey83

Wouldn’t it be better to just axe the whole thing and start something new rather than a ‘reboot’? What’s the point?

  • http://oshunanat.livejournal.com/ Carrie

She’s so dead in the eyes! I think they were doing whatever they could to salvage the shoot, but talk about zero charisma or personality on camera!

  • guest2visits

After the first photo, the clothing was nothing. She could have been wearing faded, old towels.

  • ccm800

I checked out after the premier. Hell no.

  • erinbinek

I like the first dress, but I just can’t with the rest.  And oatmeal is the most accurate description of her I’ve heard yet.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Three-day-old oatmeal, at that. If they do a reboot, focus on Ivy (Megan Hilty), Tom (Christian Borle) and whatsername’s husband, the one played by Brian d’Arcy James. Let him remember he used to want to be a star, dump the wife, steal her composing partner, and the two of them can write musicals he stars in opposite Ivy. Cause Debra Messing, her stalker boyfriend, her slackjaw son, Anjelica Huston, her scruffy bartender boyfriend, Ellis, Uma and especially McPhee are SO not working. I kind of like Jack Davenport (at least he’s hot) but they’ve pretty much ruined his character, too. See ya, Theresa Rebeck! Let’s bring in Harvey Fierstein or Robert Lopez and get this party started!

  • Lisa_Cop

As a former dancer, tried watching 1 episode but simply couldn’t. 10 minutes of pure boredom. As for these pictures, they’ are as dull as the show. And what is with those jeans?

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

      they are pure distilled awfulness.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

That is one of the worst editorials I’ve seen. She’s a pretty girl and I think this does her no justice. I blame this less on her than the styling and general concept. Booo.

  • TieDye64

She’s probably a very nice girl, and she’s pretty and has a nice voice, but she is utterly lacking in charisma.

As far as the show, it lost me after the 2nd episode. It went downhill very quickly.

  • Melissa Brogan

    Pretty girl. Boring shoot.

  • alyce1213

I like the first shot, the dress is fun, the shoes are cool, the flowers are pretty, and she almost has personality.

Smash lost me halfway through the first show.  I think I saw it all coming.

  • Linderella

Never liked her, she’s actually the reason I quit watching American Idol and the reason I never started this show.  Hate her singing voice (hate!), and the blazing flashes of evil she’d get in her eyes when the judges gave her the rare criticism genuinely creeped me out.  Remember when other contestants would sing and she’d sit there glaring at them, but as soon as she was aware the camera was on her, she’d smile and start clapping? Wow–been a long time since I let her fire me up.  Sorry, rant over.

    • hezdelia

LOL!  You summed up my feelings for her perfectly.  I hated her during American Idol – I felt like she was shoved down our throats.  She’s not that talented at all, and she’s totally fake.  She just has friends in high places who keep trying to make her “happen.”  STOP!!  I would never watch anything with her in it.

  • quiltrx

I have no opinion on her…she’s vanilla.

That first dress is KILLA…and they posed her like a damned paper doll.  WTF?

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

i love vanilla, but not her.

  • Lilithcat

McPhee bores the heck out of me, which is one of the reasons I stopped watching Smash.  Hilty, on the other hand, has apparently knocked them dead as Lorelei Lee in New York: http://theater.nytimes.com/2012/05/11/theater/reviews/gentlemen-prefer-blondes-with-megan-hilty-at-city-center.html

    • Qitkat

      Good for her.
But I have a question, granted I am not a theatre aficionado, but I found that review almost unreadable. Ended up skimming it. Is that typical of theatre reviews?

      • Lilithcat

Not sure why you found it unreadable.  I thought it was pretty clear, myself.  And, yes, it’s a fair representative of theatre reviews.

        • Qitkat

Perhaps it’s because many of the references were obscure to me, and the writing style just seemed so flowery and overly dramatic. Different strokes…

  • FlamingJune1967

goodness!  Kat is a beautiful woman.  Someone had to work really hard to make her look this bad.  Hate, Hate, HATE the hair!

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

    nice flowers.  that’s about it.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Amen! I want so badly for Smash! But, when a musical theater geek like myself is choosing a re-run of Househunters International over it as her bedtime tv-snack, you know things have gone seriously to the dogs.

  • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

    I love that first dress.

  • ZnSD

I simply can’t stop watching Smash. I just love Megan Hilty far too much. I’ll take what I can get! Sadly, I’m sure that she will be passed over for the lead for the milquetoast McPhee. Such is the difference between Hollywood and Broadway. Sad.

  • poggi

She looks like a Barbie doll in that first picture, a lovely brunette plastic Barbie (the hand without the flowers is in that weird Barbie doll position).

  • EEKstl

She looks like a younger Juliana Marguiles, if Juliana Marguiles were a robot.
