In or Out: Scarlett Johansson in Preen

Posted on May 03, 2012

Scar gets the full Hollywood royalty treatment.

Scarlett Johansson honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Preen paired with Christian Louboutin pumps and Bulgari jewelry.

Preen Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Ava Smith

First off, does she realize that’s not wet cement? Why is she posing like that with her hands?

We still don’t like it when she plays around with these ’40s/’50s-esque hair styles. They don’t suit her, for the most part. We do, oddly enough, really like this getup. We say “oddly enough,” because if you’d shown us this outfit before she put it on, we’d have said, “Never gonna work on her.” She’s not particularly good at wearing difficult clothes and making them work, so color us pleasantly surprised that she’s making a balloony skirt and tight top in mismatched patterns actually look pretty good on her. It’s bold and photographs well, plus it’s just casual enough that she can get down on her hands and knees to … place her hands on the sidewalk, for some reason. Perhaps she’s imbuing her star with Johannson energy.

Oh, and we like the shoes this time.

Vote Now!

IN! It’s all working like gangbusters for me!

OUT! My mama taught me two things: Jesus loves me and not to mix patterns.

Jessica Alba’s sassy sweater and pants combo was not sassy enough for the Bitter Kittens, who gleefully voted it OUT.

  • Love. In.

  • LOVE. IN.

  • Love the dress, love the shoes, not sold on the hair. I don’t mind the 40s hair on her, it suits her, but this one-sided thing gives her odd proportions.
    But a definite IN.

  • Little_Olive

    Neither here nor there.

“does she realize that’s not wet cement? Why is she posing like that with her hands?” : my exact impression when I saw the pictures ;p

    • MRC210

She’s seen the photos of Marilyn and other stars back in the day when they did put their handprints in wet cement, and thinks that’s the way it’s always done, is my guess.

      • Those are actually two different things, Stars are in the Hollywood walk of fame and cement imprints are at Grauman’s Chinese Theater, both active things if I am not mistaken.

    • Lingus

I grew up in Hollywood and a lot of celebs pose like that with their stars. Or they’ll flop down onto the ground next to it, which I don’t think ScarJo would do. I guess there’s only so many ways to look like a world-renowned celebrity while posing with a piece of sidewalk.

      Shoulda gone Jack Nicholson:

  • Kolo_Ol

She’s totally channeling ERW and I like it!

  • Out.The top feels dowdy and the skirt is doing something weird in the front.

  • NatalieD28

In!! I don’t really like the hair, but I do like the rest of the look!

  •  A very surprised In.  When I saw these pics yesterday, the first one I saw was the one of her with her hands on the star and I immediately thought, “uh oh, when she stands up this is going to get ugly.”  Like TLo, I thought there was no way she could pull off the mixed print/puffy hips combo, but for no explicable reason she is.  Also really like the shoes and  fresh-but-polished make up, and the hair is significantly less annoying that most of the other retro updos and flips she’s been sporting.

  • IN!

  • Well, whoever decided to drastically take in the sides of that skirt was very wise.  Looking at the runway version, the skirt has pronounced solid black panels on the sides, which are almost completely gone on ScarJo.  And I actually like the hairstyle she has in these shots.  Sure its another retro nod, but I think this one works for her.  Its not too severe, which is her downfall usually. IN!

    • MissAnnieRN

IS that what is going on?  I just figured Scarlett has more a real woman’s shape so it fit her better.  But there is still something weird about the cut that could be improved upon on Scarlett.  Maybe I just wish it was a regular pencil skirt instead of whatever wonkiness is still happening.

      •  Yeah, it looks like they opened the side seams and took out several inches of the width, especially at the top.  But it was probably done on the fly, which accounts for any apparent wonkiness.

        • luciaphile

Aha! I’m going with a very very marginal In on this one.

  • IN…super chic & rocking out the contrasting patterns.

  • Kayceed

In. Her figure is nicely suited to that getup. She looks cute.

  • In. And yes, that’s marble, Scarlett. You’ll leave nothing but a hand smudge.

  • Not a fan of most of her poses here, but love the dress and shoes! In.

  • nannypoo

I hate this hair on her and I hate even more that poufed up pulled back style she usually wears. She does not have the face to pull this off. It makes her nose stick out and her chin recede. I also agree that this is a ridiculous pose for getting an award in a slab of granite. I think I remember the Twilight kids doing the same thing. Someone must be directing this behavior. Think, Scarlett! What is your motivation?

  • TheLaurenJean

Eh, Out. There’s nothing there to get excited over.

  • homofascist

    Love it.  IN!

  • MissAnnieRN

IN.  But what is up with the cut of that skirt?  Scarlett is curvy and it looks better on her than the model, but it’s just a really strange cut in the abdomen area.

  • PeggyOC

In.  I hate her “Herbie the dentist elf” hair, but the rest is a total win.  And props to her for picking a skirt length that works with all that bending and squatting.  Mind you, she’s never been a member of the gynecological over-sharing squad, whatever her other fashion flaws.

    • tired_mommy

OMG–love the unexpected but right on “Herbie” reference!

    •  OMG “Herbie the dentist elf hair” = A++++++++++++++++++

    • Ha, love this!  FYI I think it’s HERMEY, the elf who wants to be a dentist.

  • Love it. She’s so beautiful.

  • Jessica Rowe

OUT. I like this outfit, but I keep thinking that this is one photograph that will make it around the world and be shown throughout history as the day she got her star.  And that’s what she chose to wear?  She doesn’t look like a star.

    • introspective

“She doesn’t look like a star.” I think thats exactly my problem. Nice enough outfit, but is it a good enough outfit for your star on the Hollywood walk? I think the idea of this worked (a good day dress that makes the best of her fab figure without showing the good china for all the bent down shots) but this particular dress falls flat to me for the occasion.

    • egl48

      She’s looks boring.

      •  Not so much boring as *shudder* ordinary.  I expect the financially and genetically blessed to muster their assets more impressively.

    • MoreShoes

      My thoughts exactly! OUT

  • She’s rocking the outfit, and the hair is appropriate for the look.  And the shoes are much better than the ones on the runway look. IN, the girl is having the week of her career.

  • librarygrrl64

I think it’s a good silhouette for her, and it fits nicely. Kinda like the hair swoop, too. IN.

  • LuisaNL

    she looks great. In!

  • I think she looks great. IN!

  • jw_ny

I like it all, even her hair.

The “that’s not wet cement” comment about her posing…too funny!

  • sagecreek

IN. I don’t particularly like the dress, but she does make it work, and oh those shoes! Wowza!

  • BazoDee

IN. The worst part is the shape of the skirt. But it still gets an IN from me.

  • Sophie Collier

IN, but I agree with you on the hair.  Stop it, Scarlett.  Dita does it better.

  • In_Stitches

Her second attempt at mixing fairly similar prints in about a week…it’s better than the last time (the two very similar florals divided by a black peplum), but it’s still not great.  Everything fits though and the shapes work for her, so I guess she’s earned an IN.

  • Great dress! And I wish I liked her more: I hate that I’m not excited about the only female superhero in The Avengers or the possibility of her getting her own movie, because I would love to support that. But I do not like Scarlett Johansson, and I didn’t like her in Iron Man 2, and unless she’s very different in The Avengers I doubt I’ll like her there either.

  • a thousand times in. and her hair is pretty

  • Snailstsichr

I like mixing patterns, so my mama has obviously given up trying to learn me anything!

Very chic. She is tall enough to look stylish in this length, which is just about perfect when apparently one is required to kneel before one’s star. And dare I say it – she coordinated very well with the black and white granite and her red shoes make the pink star pop a little. All and all a great outfit for the venue!

  • RzYoung

Yep, IN…have you seen the shots of her gran there too? So cute!!

  • Sweet! In.

  • FlamingJune1967

My mother taught me that if I was going to be down on my knees and bending over I should either wear a full skirt or slacks!  I like the mixed patterns, but do not like the sewn in wrinkles on the skirt.  also, hate the hair.  Out

  • crash1212

IN. Love it all, except the hair…wing?

  • IN – cute outfit despite the terrible hair. As for the pose – they don’t give those stars out for intelligence.

  • hillmad

I’m surprised by all the IN’s. I can’t get past how wrinkled the skirt looks and how tight the top and waistband are. Also, kudos to PeggyOC for the “Herbie the dentist elf hair” comment! Perfect! It’s basically a fine outfit (minus the hair), but, as Jessica Rowe commented, “She doesn’t look like a star.”

  • IN. Look at that figure. LOOK AT IT.

  • I usually hate mixed prints, but this is cute and yes, totally event-appropriate.  Her hair doesn’t quite ruin it. IN.

  • IN! I don’t think I’ve ever looked at pictures of ScarJo and thought “OMG she looks so beautiful!” before. Maybe it’s not so much the outfit but the fact that she looks genuinely happy here (she has a beautiful smile), and that makes all the difference.

  • In. She’s Scarlett Johansson – that’s a ticket to autofab. Not that I’m biased or anything! Though I do actually think she’s working a difficult dress v. well, and that the sort of cartoony vamp retro hair/shoes/lipstick are actually really fun. She pulls it all off. Even the weird pose.

  • Actually, the 40s/50s hair-dos are the ONLY ones that work for her…

  • BrooklynBomber

OUT. I just can’t deal with the hairstyle or the ugly print +saddlebags on the skirt. Plus, getting down on all fours and having your picture taken while wearing a pencil skirt is just wrong.

  • OUT.  I prefer the not-so-great-hair over the mixing of patterns.

  • My guess would be (and I could be wrong), the photographers asked her to put her hands down like that, or a publicist… I can’t imagine her wanting to put her hands on the ground on her own free will.  Still not as weird as Jolie’s leg pop at the Oscars.

  • IN. I don’t like the hair either – and I am a little iffy on the Minnie Mouse shoes – but overall she looks good. Go Scar!

  • belfebe

    IN.  Truly and really IN.

  • TropiCarla

“My mama taught me two things: Jesus loves me and not to mix patterns.” lol
I <3 this ever so much! My mama did teach me those things but I've always had a problem with irreverence. IN for Scarlett.

  • Scarlet39

Neck down:  Love.  Although I wouldn’t have done red shoes

Neck up:  that hair is tragic

  • calimon

  • In.

  • SpcilK

Everything is good, except for the hair.

  • Ennovi_R

    IN! She looks good!

  • MilaXX

IN I like the entire look

  • marilyn

In.  I usually don’t like mixed prints, but I like this.  The shoes are great.  The outfit needs the contrast of the shoes (which are contrasting in color, but not too busy otherwise) to brighten it up.  She looks better than the runway model.  I don’t care about her hair-it looks fine.

  • She looks fresh and current, but also classic and retro at the same time. Love it all.

  • judith traherne

The high round neck is not doing her any favors but I love the dress.

  • Lizzyisi

Despite the slight poufing at the hips- a total IN. But I disagree–I think this hair suits her beautifully.

  • RebeccaKW

I’m going with In.  They toned down the balloony-ness of the skirt and it really shows her curves.  I’m not a fan of the hair, but the makeup is soft.

I was thinking the same thing as I scrolled down-why is she placing her hands on it?  Is it trying to fly away?

  • poggi

At first I thought her skirt was pulling, but after  seeing the picture with the model I realized it was intentional volume.  I dislike the skirt on Scarlet less so than I do on the model. I like the print mixing.  I don;t love how swoopy her hair is. Small in for me.  Big IN for Tom, Lorenzo and all the Bitter Kittens.  I am cooking all day and the posts and comments are a great chance to sit and take a break in between tasks.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  Love the red shoes with this.

  • ErmengardeGreen

I like it! I agree that it’s surprising that the busy prints and blousy skirt aren’t conspiring against her, and that the hair is unflattering. She does look really young in this outfit, though, which I guess is good? When one looks back over her career at the photo of her getting a Hollywood star and she looks 17?

  • Sara__B

I’m glad she had the balloony part altered out of the skirt, and I love those red shoes, but a crew neck with short sleeves flatters almost no one, and I don’t like the fit or either of the patterns, alone or together. OUT.

  • kimmeister

In.  Don’t love the hair, but everything else looks great.  Want those shoes!

  • CQAussie

I’m kinda digging it….and I love the shoes – IN!

  • I think it is adorable on her. IN from me!

  • nyll18

In. I like that she chose a high neckline. I feel like most female stars wear low cut tops when they get the Hollywood star/handprint in concrete thing. Then when they are leaning over on the ground, it’s like a boob parade. I’m all about a little modesty. (which actually is a bit out of character for Scarlett and her boobs.)

  • She looks adorable and I’m thrilled she wore colorful shoes. In.

    (also hate the hair)

  • msdamselfly

    IN  Love her hair

  •  LOVE! In.  I think the 40s hair styling suits her beautifully. Which hair styles do you guys prefer on her?

  • Not liking the hair, but the rest of it really works for me. And I am glad that she didn’t match her lipstick to her shoes! Very cute.

  • OUT. I don’t get her appeal in general but here she looks like someone who works in a mall. Maybe it’s her turn to run the sweeper tonight. That’s why she’s picking at the carpet. I don’t know.

  • Jecca2244

i love the retro hair on her

  • KaileeM

IN! She looks better in the outfit than the model. Maybe because she has curvier hips to fill it out. I agree with you on the hair, though.

  • piecesofconfetti

IN, I think she looks fab. Too funny, though, about the hands in the non-cement.

  • CarolinLA

    She never looks contemporary.

  • Beth G

I don’t like it… the graphic pattern on the skirt is doing weird things to her shape.  Out

  • Lola67

In. I like the outfit, but don’t like the shoes.

  • Love it. IN.

  • I keep trying to like it..and I can’t. Out.

  • fireontiger

It’s not perfect, but she looks amazing. IN.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN IN IN I love this so much.

  • Eh. She looks good. But I recuse myself from voting because I can’t stand her.
My REAL question is – has Louboutin always made an all red pump, or is this a recent development to skew the YSL lawsuit? Because to be sure, red sole or not, I would never have known these were Louboutins without reading the subtitle. And I follow these things.

  • Kate4queen

    Out, I keep thinking of Q codes…

    • formerlyAnon

       Made me laugh!

  • Cathy S

I think she looks fantastic. And I her her hair like that. In.

  • MzzPants

IN!  Perfect choice for the event…don’t want to conflict with all that red carpet.

  • formerlyAnon

In. I like the dress and, unlike you gentlemen, I LOVE the hair on her. Adorable from the neck up, fine from the neck down.

  • Pennymac

IN! And I love the shoes. That hairstyle is unflattering, however.

  • julnyes

Definitely IN. I think she looks better than the model. I am also deeply confused with her hand placement.

  • benjamin478

    IN for sure

  • Meh. I have an issue with patterns. Out.

  • DinahR

Imaginary cement is always IN!  But honestly I really love this outfit and I think she looks fun and very photo-op friendly.  Well done.  I think her hair is alright.

  • EEKstl

IN because I love this dress and the shoes (hair is bad).  Does the skirt look so much narrower on Scar than on the model because Scar doesn’t weigh 86 lbs, or did they alter it for a more traditional silhouette?  Love the mix of patterns.

  • I’m going to bet the hands thing was a stupid-photographer-request because I just don’t think she’d do that on her own.

But IN — she looks great.

  • So in. I have such the crush on her Black Widow, right now she can do no wrong in my eyes. But Avengers lurve aside, I really do love this on her.

  • VioletFem

IN. I have to say I disagree about your stance on the hair. I think she has the perfect look for ’40s & ’50s hairstyles. She doesn’t always get it right but this particular hairstyle works well with her face. Outfit is cute too.

  • TheOriginalLulu

She’s IN for having such a knockout body and looking so god in that outfit, but the hair is very bad. Does she ever look in the mirrer when her hair is done or does she have that much blind faith in her hairdresser??

  • In. Except the hair. And the posing.

  • Hate the hair, but love the whole look despite it. In, I say!

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

It doesn’t look like it fits her, and I don’t really think the patterns go well together. She looks frumpy. OUT.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN. She looks great and I love the mixed patterns on her. She’s probably posing like that because the photographer asked her to.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I love the pattern mixing.  Giving me happy memories of early Mondo days.  Don’t like the hair, but overall she looks great.

  • meowing

Out.  Unflattering around the hip/upper thigh area.  Love the pattern mixing, but it’s just not a good fit.  Why, oh why, do they still do the “pressing my hands into the [nonexistant] cement” pose?

  • Jessica O’Connell

    I say IN. Looks good!

  • StrandedFashionista

Hair is a little odd but I LOVE the dress on her. IN.

  • altalinda

The hairdo and bunchy skirt make this an Out for me.

  • AuntieAnonny

  • In! It is all working.

  • Super, super IN, although the posing is hilarious.

  • mjude

  • I say in, but you’re right about the hair.

  • SapphoPoet

  • bellafigura1

Boop oop de boop.  Girl can’t not do pin-up.  Yawn.

  • Needs more Jeremy Renner.

  • In. That dress looks better on her than the model which is always a nice accomplishment. I think the hair is ok, I’d really have to see  what’s going on in the back, though.

  • In.  And I’m thankful that her lips don’t match her shoes exactly.

  • TSkot

    Practically a WERQ.  Way IN

  • TieDye64

The hair alone is bad enough to call it an OUT. It’s very unflattering and just looks silly to me. Too bad because the rest of the look is pretty good.

  • Judy_J

IN.  She’s dressed appropriately for the occasion, and though I normally hate mixing patterns, it works here.  The cheesey pose, however, is OUT.

  • Kacper Nedza

I’ m not the biggest fan of ScarJo but I think she looks pretty much perfect here. IN.

  • Laylalola

IN! And she looks like she knows it. Is Mondo with Preen?

  • MarissaLG

    Totally IN!

  • Char Crop

IN! AND SHE KNOWS IT! Love the red shoes for that pop of color.

  • elizonthelam

Love! Even the hair. (Well maybe not love it, but at least like it) I think the reason the skirt works is that they removed the extra black fabric that’s on the model’s version and tailored the skirt in. That’s where the poofiness comes from. Ms. Johansson, unlike the model, already has beautiful full round hips, so they don’t need to be faked/exaggerated for her by a skirt.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Love the dress and the shoes on her, but not the hair. AT ALL. So it’s a dilemma. I’m going to go with a grudging in and try to throw some water on her hair to get that godawful bang wave out of it.

  • love, even the hair!

  • Lina_bee

    Out. Preen, what the hell??

  • IN! Love the pattern mixing, and the hair, actually. And the red pumps. Well done.

  • elemspbee

In. She looks great. Outfit looks better on her than the model. Shoes are working superbly with the mixed patterns.

  • Scar is IN!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

everything but the hair looks fabulous. i think, to her credit, she had the skirt’s idiotic saddlebags taken in.

  • mcbishop

Hate the hair, love the rest. In anyway.

  • Jeez, they’ll give a star to anyone.  How long IS this Walk of Fame?  Seems like everyone in the business is worthy of a star these days…..

  • lyrico

OUT. The girls look a little constricted, forming almost a ‘mono-boob’…also not loving the hair and even with makeup she looks washed out (no doubt she is exhausted from buzzing around everywhere doing promotion for the avengers).

  • Louise Bryan

In.  She looks very cute and personable.

  • granddelusion

    Skirts too tight.

  • Mexxoo

I want to cut her a little slack – I think she was going for a dress which would not show off the fine china or the milk jugs when she got down on the ground.  However… Sorry, OUT.

  • Really cute, even though that’s not her hairstyle. IN.

  • BeeBeauNYC

In, and I like the hair!

  • ZnSD

…Is Mondo designing for Preen, now?

  • Allison Woods

Oh yeah. Matter of fact, HELL YEAH!!

  • In.  But the hair is very distracting in a bad way.

  • cleep1000

That flip in her hair makes it look like she’s about to fly away. I can’t get past it. OUT.

  • kikisayshi

IN! The dress is supercute, and I can never be mad at some red shoes. But the flippy hair has got to go.

  • Best she’s looked in a long time! IN

  • bluefish

    A happy In.

  • IN. Love the whole 50s vibe here.

  • Joyce VG

    IN. Very pretty.

  • Why does her hair look like a nike swoosh?

  • IN

  • demidaemon

IN. Love it all, even the hair!

  • amber_julene

What they said. So in. And can she send it to me when she’s finished with it?

  • SO IN.

  • Jangle57

I think the dress is just flat out ugly and does nothing for her, nor does the hairstyle.  OUT

  • Haley Buchanan

What’s not to love??  I love the mixmatch, LOVE the pop of red in the shoes, and I think this particular hairstyle actually does suit her.  IN!

  • Working an Evan Rachel Wood peg? In.

  • Totally In. Best thing I’ve seen her wearing in a long time. And I think the shoes are actually a pretty good choice for the outfit.

  • She’s soooo… snazzy!  IN

  • aristida_girl

In! I think she looks great, love the red shoes and red lippy…

  • FayeKat

    Girl is Rocking it! IN

  • Claire Amandry

In – she looks sexi and confident.
On the other hand, you should definitely check out the ugly, shiny, grey suit Jeremy Renner was wearing for the occasion. I am assuming that this was on purpose so as not to upstage his co-star. Or probably not.

  • literaticat

love – and she looks way better in it than the model does, imo. they must have tailored the skirt differently?  and the red shoes are much better.

  • In from the waist up, but I really can’t get behind that skirt, too poofy in an unflattering way and it takes away from the easy-breeziness of the rest of the outfit.

  • Beardslee

    In.  Really nice.

  • They’ll give those stars to anyone these days…

  • CatherineRhodes

  • I to the N, she looks wonderful!
I love the contrasting prints and the garment looks way better on her than it does on the model.

  • tripletmom96

Hey Scar-Jo — the Chinese theatre is across the street and down a few doors… (that’s where the cement hand & footprints are).  that said, i love the dress & shoes.  like the  understated makeup – hair is a little severe.  overall — IN…

  • IN.  (and it looks like she tried to do her own hair, and if that’s the case then it’s cute!)

  • In! Daytime glamour!

  • PeaceBang

The Big Boy Burger Chain hair destroys an otherwise adorable look. OUT for the hair. And I’m in hysterics over here wondering why the HELL the girl is on her hands and knees!?

  • ccm800

    IN as hell.

  • Ezmartin

Looks like a Mondo outfit so naturally I love it.

  • bitterk

Love the clothes, hate the hair.  Something about this girl is always off. Her proportions perhaps?

  • PrunellaV

She looks like she scheduled the ceremony for her lunch break at Acme Secretarial School. OUT.

  • RutGot

In! Love the dress, good choice of shoe, not loving the hair but I’m giving her a pass this time. And I agree with whoever sais that they were smart to alter the dress to take in the skirt, the contrasting patterns are enough. It doesn’t need the crazy ballon shape too.

  • Samantha Irene

Love the dress – wish the shoes were orange or pink or some other color than red. So sick of black and white and red. I know it’s classic, but ugh – it just seems too default to me. Still IN. Though what is she doing with her hands…
