In or Out: Elizabeth Banks in Peter Pilotto
Lizzie Banks has been having quite the little fashionista year. She grabbed onto that Hunger Games publicity train and refused to let go, showing up in outfits that ranged from jaw-dropping to eminently discussable for the press tour, ensuring that, even when surrounded by fresh-faced up-and-comers, all eyes were focussed on her. It’s been one of the more expertly crafted red carpet publicity tours we’ve seen in a good while and it made us fans.

You know what? There is no “however” here. We were leaning towards thinking this was way too much dress for her, but the more we look at it, the more we think it’s mostly working. She’s taking a page from the January Jones playbook, wherein she deliberately chooses outfits that play against her WASPish good looks and the expectations people have because of them. Like JaJo, Lizzie could probably rock mid-Century Hitchcock ice princess looks in her sleep, but she chooses instead to be edgier than people expect. It took us a good while to come around to January’s way of thinking on this (mainly because there were some truly eye-murdering looks in her red carpet history), but she changed our minds and showed us how expectations are wonderful things to play with when you’re in the public eye. This is a long-winded way of saying that we really love her desire to take risks and that this dress is uniquely beautiful and eye-catching.
But there’s no way in hell we can sign off on sheer hip panels.
IN! Striking and unique!
OUT! Awkward and ugly!
