Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Lea Michele in Emilio Pucci

Posted on May 15, 2012

We have a very “lady on the red carpet”-heavy day ahead of us, kittens, and you would be forgiven for asking, “How is that different from any other day?” because you do not sit in on our super-important 7 am editorial meetings. Which is lucky for you, because we look pretty scary during them and we’re positively covered in cats the whole time.

Anyway, Lea:

Lea Michele attends the Fox 2012 Programming Presentation Post-Show Party in NYC in an Emilio Pucci blush lace sleeveless sheath dress. Shoes by Casadei. Jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz.

Emilio Pucci Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kinga Rajzak

Of course.

Y’know, overall, she looks good. The dress fits her like a glove and the style suits her. Her hair and makeup are lovely. But the dress is only a shade or two off from her skin tone, which means all that skin-colored lace winds up looking like scar tissue. Sorry, Lea. It’s a great dress, and if it was in any other color you would look amazing in it, but you need to box this dress up and have UPS deliver it to Freida Pinto.

And what is UP with all these girlstars wearing suede pumps lately? In MAY? STANK PUMP.

Forget about the dress. I stopped cold at this:

I don’t know, this makes sense to me. They all go to upfronts and sit through the presentation, and then they go celebrate that their show’s been renewed. Seems like a good enough excuse for a party to me!

    • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

I liked how she looks in it until you threw “scar tissue” at us, now that’s all I see

           Lovely viewwwwwww…
          No. Not just you.

        • ZnSD

young kentucky girl in a pushup bra, indeed.

      • Vaniljekjeks

At first I just thought the dress just blended into the rest of her… but now… just scar tissue.  Lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I really like that dress – it’s not the most flattering on her bust though, and I totally agree about the scar tissue (or even psoriasis ) resemblance. It’d be better on her in black I think.

      • NinaBoo

Oh, dear. Now she’s never going to put fabric over those girls. It’s going to be down-to-the-navel dresses for her forever. Of course.

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like to think that there is something between HELLO GIRLS and nun where a girl can find a flattering neckline! But yeah – this is still a lot better than her down-to-the-navel norm.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

I am not being threatened with any of her lady parts, so this works for me.  Baby steps, people, baby steps.

    • MzzPants

      ‘Scar tissue’…-snort-!

    • SapphoPoet

Such a demure look; I hardly recognized her.

    • Spicytomato1

Scar tissue, haha. Ick. It’s actually not nearly as bad as I was expecting from the headline. It’s a downright demure look for her. Even the hair is toned down, and, if not for the unflattering bangs, a look I can get behind.

      • http://fafafab.tumblr.com/ fafafab

I love Lea Michele so much, and I think she’s so pretty in a non conventional way, but the bangs make her face look wider and her features less delicate

I miss the days with Rachel’s sexy hair in Season 1, she went back to her old hairstyle during prom-asaurus and she looked amazing

        • Nelliebelle1197

There is NOTHING delicate about her features! That’s why she is non-conventionally good looking. I always think she look so desperate.

    • SewingSiren

I love this dress on her. Much better than her usual full tilt extravaganzas. To me it looks like the lace is pink and the lining is a pretty close match to her natural skin color. Her shoes are too big though.

      • MaryMitch

I agree, I like it on her. Looks better on her than the model. Oh, well, I guess we’re in the minority, and not for the first time (for me).

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

True. The model’s skin tone makes it even worse.

        • raininmai

I like it on her too. I really don’t see the problem with the color. It’s several steps up from her usual display and the dress fits her perfectly.

      • janetjb

It would be difficult to find a lining any closer to her skin color.
T Lo don’t like suede shoes in May, I don’t like poorly fitting shoes and I don’t care who gave them to her.

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

It looks like  a shroud, and kind of tight across the bodice- not a fan.

    • http://twitter.com/mizenkay Nancy K.

STANK PUMP! And another T-Lo-ism has entered my lexicon. Merci.

    • Ellie Rowe

You know, I normally agree with most of what you queens say, but I think you’re wrong here. The problem isn’t the dress – it’s her makeup and shoes. She could have done with a pop of colour and the lips do not suit her at all, but other than that I think she looks great.

Especially when you think about how much of her legs we’re NOT seeing, unlike normal. Baby steps Lea, baby steps.

    • http://twitter.com/jenontheedge Jen on the Edge

I give her credit for wearing something that’s not fallopian-length, nor are the twins falling out.

    • shirab

They couldn’t find shoes in her size? Also, the long, thick bangs plus extra-filled-in brows is a bit heavy-looking. And is that a tiny green tattoo on her shoulder or did someone accidentally brush by her with an uncapped pen?

      OK, I’m done now.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Tattoo – I saw something once where she said she has 9 or 10 of them but they are all really small.

    • http://twitter.com/SarahVotes Sarah Bailey

Actually, I really like this on her. No chance of nip-slips or Britney-limo situations. Positively tasteful.

    • http://profiles.google.com/saramichelef Sarah Michele Ford

Does she not get any points for not dressing like she’s presenting her ladybits for inspection by the entire world?

The dress should be red. Or blue. Maybe black. And the shoes should not be matchy.

    • Jessi03

Wow, her hair and makeup really look lovely.  So fresh and sweet.

    • Sobaika

I think she looks really cute. It’s just different enough from her skin tone that I don’t get the scar tissue vibe.

    • ccinnc

      She looks pretty amazing IMHO.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I will say this, at least. She doesn’t, for once, look like a hooker wannabe.

    • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

I really think she should get a WERQ it just for trying something a little bit classy. I mean, I don’t think I ever saw her with so much cloth!

    • RebeccaKW

It seems too tight in the bust.  If it were a bit darker or a bit lighter…something else…she would look spectacular.  She doesn’t look bad, but she’s one color except for hair and lips.  But this is a lace dress that doesn’t my eye twitch.

    • Tracey Konicek

      STANK PUMP! And, scene!

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

I actually love the dress, and I love it on her. But girl, that’s not your hairstyle.

    • http://twitter.com/Lola99959 Veronika Kaufmann

who is this chick and why are we talking about her?

    • Kayceed

I think she looks pretty. Also, I think choosing a color very close to her own skin tone was absolutely intentional – to make it more of a “naked” dress.

    • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

I totally disagreed until “scar tissue.” Also, those shoes are horrid – not only are they suede stank pumps, they look to be the size of a cruise ship on her feet. It looks like she’s playing in her mom’s closet, trying on shoes.  :-/

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Hmm.. I think she looks really lovely.  I don’t have my own opinion about her.  I only really know her through TLo posts, so I am predisposed to think “trying to hard”, “of course”, “look at me!”.  So, this… this seems like someone has been listening!!  Let’s encourage!!

    • lordandtaylor

First photo: Again we have the awkward ‘I have to pee” pose.

I think this is a rare case when the actress looks better in the dress than the model…who looks a bit like Tabitha of Bravo TV fame.

    • MinkaL

I think she looks totally gorgeous. I like the dress and I love the braided hairstyle. I really do want to know what’s up with the over-sized shoes though. It must be done on purpose and I want to know what that purpose is.

    • VioletFem

So close Leah! This dress would look amazing on her if she had chosen a darker or brighter shade. Personally, I think it would look best in a deep red or blue. Hair and makeup look good, though.

    • BazoDee

So close to being a werq really. She looks amazing and all her bits are covered. Hate the shoes.

    • Verascity

I actually think she looks fantastic, and I usually hate her ensembles. Go figure.

      • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

        My thoughts exactly.

    • fringebenefit

Usually the beige on beige would bother me, but not here. I think she looks fantastic. In fact, the dress suits her better than it does the model. Hair is terrific. Shoes are fine.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Katherine-Lavender/553350310 Katherine Lavender

Is that supposed to be a tattoo on her shoulder, or did she just forget to wash off an odd biro squiggle? Not a good look.

    • MilaXX

Not her color dress at all. Nice shape, just not for her. Also ladystars, please be careful when wearing dark kips. You don’t want to look like you are taking makeup advice from Paz de la Huerta.

    • nannypoo

Frieda Pinto or Zoe Saldana, either would look beautiful in this dress. Demure is definitely not Lea’s look. If she removed the lining, cut 8 inches off the skirt and slashed the bodice to the waist, then this would be her look.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_CIPKMOXHLA5KG34HMH55OXHCVM Angel H.

The dress, shoes, and the makeup I can live with. But that hair!

    • Judy_J

What’s with Miss Lea, being all demure and everything?

    • janetjb

It’s her dress, but it’s not her color.

    • Call me Bee

OK–I agree about the color, but aside from that, she looks uncharacteristically modest in this.  So refreshing.  Brava!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Doesn’t seem like this quite warrants an “Of course.” Seems like she’s finally switching it up and moving in a better direction.

Agree on the color but it’s such a positive step in the right direction that I like it.

      • Super_Red

I thought the same thing about the “of course.” First time I HAVEN’T thought that about her. I think it was probably about the posing though.

    • joancarol

She reminds me of my cousin who ran away with an old man gangster and then disappeared.

    • BrooklynBomber

I hate that much lace but I think she looks pretty great. T&Lo have a point about the color, but I think it’s possible there’s more contrast than we can see (because of the flashbulbs).

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

I love the dress. But it is not the colour for her. I’d love to see it on someone very pale or very dark. That would look AMAZING.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

I actually love this dress on her – the color doesn’t bother me (maybe my computer screen is off but it’s reading as a lovely dusty rose shade) and she looks so much sexier in this than in her sparkly slit up to there getups!

    • GypsyHowell

Oh c’mon. It’s pretty! And she looks lovely in it! And  “lovely” isn’t a word that generally comes to mind with Lea on the RC.

    • kimmeister

I think light-colored suede photographs badly.  However, I don’t see why suede would be any stinkier than a closed-toe shoe made of smooth leather or any other material.

    • Scarlet39

      That’s not her hairstyle, either.

    • Super_Red

I love GTNYD posts, but I alas find myself with opposite views from T-Lo. I really love this on her and I don’t mind the color. The pink is far enough away from her skin tone that the overall effect is just lovely. Of course that could just be the “Wait, you mean I’m not looking at another picture of LM’s ladybits? YAY!” in me talking. ;)

for serious about the suede pumps…. Don’t get that one AT. ALL.

But the dress? I’m thinking it’s a keeper.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Agree–really perfect except for the color and the suede pumps.

    • http://www.facebook.com/jody.corbett Jody Corbett

Looks covered in strips of bacon fat.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m not sure which was funnier “we are positively covered in cats” or “STANK PUMP”.  The dress is not the right color, but she is fully covered so, kudos for that.  Still is not her dress.  You’re getting there Lea…keep trying.

    • Lina_bee

Eh. It’s a sheath dress. The pattern of the lace is pretty but you’re dead right about the scar tissue effect for women with paler skin tones. I’ve pretty much hit my limit on lace dresses of ANY type, though.

    • Anathema_Device

Well, it isn’t cut down to her navel or hemmed to her hoo-ha, so that’s an improvement. I cannot unsee scar tissue, though. Ick. You are so right about that.

And Amen to Stank Pump! I saw some suede rope-heeled wedges the other day and thought WTF? My brain cannot process suede summer shoes.

    • Jecca2244

i love the dress, hate the shoes

    • Beth G

I don’t like the color, but other than that it’s SO much better than her usual trying-too-hard look.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

It’s creepy.  I don’t know why, but the look is just creepy.  And suede shoes in the Spring?  Anytime, weird, but Spring?  CREEPY.

    • Sophie Collier

Haha, “scar tissue” dress.  Now that you mention it…    I’m sad for her because it IS such a pretty dress and I would have fallen in love with it too.

    • sweetlilvoice

Stank foot indeed! Put some powder in those heels. I just have to say, as someone with tattoos..why do hers look like they were done in prison? It’s so trashy. Look at that N on her shoulder. Or maybe that’s just marker and she got bored during shoe shopping.

    • bluefish

STANK PUMP!  — LOL — Classic!

    • judybrowni

Suede in May: designers trying to sell their Fall line.

Free shoes, I get. But surely, something from your own wardrobe would suit better.

      • judybrowni

But at least she had the sense not to wear black hose with the scar dress.

    • http://twitter.com/stopENtalk Brittany Johnstone

In bright teal or raspberry this would be a WERQ!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5UQHEKG5EDX4T6NMARUC565TPQ Amy

She’s wearing Pucci and doesn’t look like a hoochie. At least that’s a plus!

    • Pants_are_a_must

These are not your bangs either. Release them so that Florence Welch can stop doing that awful middle hair parting completely.

    • Pants_are_a_must

These are not your bangs either. Release them so that Florence Welch can stop doing that awful middle hair parting completely.

    • up with pod people

I have to disagree. The matching makes her looks like she’s wrapped in ~gossamer~ or some such fairything; seeming to reveal without revealing anything at all, and in fact being quite demure. I like it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/alexandra.pimenta Alexandra Gama Lima Pimenta

The “scar tissue” look (albeit funny) doesn’t turn me off. But the “I just had breast reduction surgery and still wearing bandages” look totally does. What the heck is going on with that top?

    • Susan Crawford

“. . . looks like scar tissue.” Ewwwww.

I really so like this dress, but Lea could have opted for a more dramatic color – a deep violet would have been stunning on her. And meanwhile, please DO send Ms. Pinto this blush version – it would be fantastic! And if Frieda declines, Halle Berry would look incredible in it.

    • granddelusion

“Stank pump”! For sure! It’s sandal time, ladies!
I’m not crazy about the color (or the lace — so done) in general, but especially not on that skin tone. Having said that, the design is pretty, the silhouetter perfect, and it’s so nice that she’s covered up her boobs and her legs. I feel like I’m not being shouted at, and I can see/appreciate her face more. The way it should be.

    • http://profiles.google.com/hillaryschuster Hillary Schuster

Gross shoes. I mostly agree on the dress but it’s so much better than most of the stuff she wears that I don’t mind…

    • http://twitter.com/WendyPan6 Wendy Pan

I think she looks lovely and sweet… I would have gone with less eye makeup for a look like this though.  Then again, cameras!

    • lolaleen

Didn’t she wear those same shoes in a WERQ post last year?
      http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/09/werq-lea-michele-in-j-mendel.html

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=517890557 Willis Cramer Kliefoth

It really doesn’t looks so bad from far away, but the shoes are too match (and big and off season) and in the up close it looks really cheap. However, kudos to her for once not dressing like a desperate 40 year old hooker. Hair and makeup are quite pretty. Not perfect but definitely not a “not your dress”

    • marilyn

I think it looks great.  It is intended to be faux seethrough.  It is lined in a very tasteful and skilled way.  It has the illusion that she is only wearing the lace, but in reality, we are not seeing underclothes or body parts that are best left to the imagination.  If anything, I don’t like the shoes that are too pedestrian.  They are also way too big. Where is the kleenex in the toe to make the shoe look like it fits? She needs some of those summery sandal/shoes to finish it, anyway.

    • NCDFan

I am so over the ‘I’m naked under this lace’ look.

    • TieDye64

Meh, she looks fine. At least she not thrusting her sternum in our faces. HATE the shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/sillytwigg twigg

Except for the color, I think this is the best she’s looked on the RC in a long time.

    • Qitkat

I think I’ll give her a pass this time. Girl looks lovely, despite the color.
But why would someone have a tattoo of *Z* or *2* or *N* on their shoulder?

    • Jessica Goldstein

Wow. Here she goes and chooses a very pretty, very ladylike dress that fits her like a glove and flatters her figure. This should have been a home-run. Except the color, which I agree is off. But honestly, the rest is so good and such a nice change of pace that I git it an overall thumbs up.

    • guest2visits

I think this is one of the best and most flattering looks for her yet. Really pretty. And I like this color on her, whatever
      color it is.

    • enchanted216

I think this dress looks beautiful on her!  I love the length.  I love the color and the fit.  The only thing I really don’t care for is the shoes.  Plus, they are too big for her.

    • formerlyAnon

I think  you’re harsh. The color stops it from being a great dress, but it doesn’t push it out into the windy, frozen steppes of “that’s not your dress.” In my opinion it’s better on her than a good third of what she wears.

Can’t say she looks comfortable in it, though, and that’s major points against.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

for once our girl is not hanging the good china out to dry, and i think she looks sweet.  to me, the color is more cotton candy and less flesh, and with her brunette coloring i find it flattering. i would like the hem a tiny bit higher.

however, lea,  that is definitely not your hair.

    • Snailstsichr

I’m thinking it is lovely that she is covered, but I have a question — is it illegal to loan a celebrity shoes that fit? I can’t understand why their shoes always seem too big.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Honestly, I’m so happy to see her in somthing that isn’t cut down to here with a slit up to there that the color didn’t bother me at all.

    • sagecreek

I don’t think this merits a GTINYD — sure, the color is blah, but it’s also in right now, and I’m just so happy to see her not slinging her cleavage and thighs around…

surely we want to encourage this trend?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martha-Hicks-Leta/1059884884 Martha Hicks Leta

Oh stop it, she looks fantastic. Are you having my period again?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I really like the dress and think it looks OK on her, actually, just a bit too small. But her tattoos look like someone drew them on with a ball point pen. Why bother?

    • afabulous50

Sorry guys – I think she looks fantastic here…

    • sononagal

TOTALLY disagree with you guys on this.  I frankly thought WERQ.  The shade of lace has a slight blush tone that complements her skin perfectly.  Love her milk chocolate colored hair and plum lips.  Other colors for this dress that would look as good with her eyes and hair would have been navy, plum, or black lace – but this choice is far more refreshing and better for the season.

    • frances rossi

      I loved it

      • carolynmo

Me, too! This is the best she’s looked in quite a while.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I’m sorry, Tom and Lo, but I gotta disagree with you on this one.  Compared to what she usually wears (i.e., slutwear), she looks amazing.  Like the hair and makeup, love the dress, and the shoes are forgivable.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

although her boobs look terribly divided, at least in the top photo, i’m surprised you find this whole look so odious. it’s fine, it’s better than her usual–& you know i’m not crazy about her, so i’m not just being charitable. the shoes are, indeed, ghastly, however.

    • Judy_S

I really like this. The too-big pumps are the only thing that bothers me.

    • Zippypie

I really like this dress on her.  I think that the matchy matchy pumps and lipstick hurt the look considerably in terms of washing her out, not the dress.  She should have something a bit more vibrant berry on her lips and feet.

It’s simply amazing she’s not wearing a dress that is slit up to her cooter and slit down to her navel, as per her usual.

    • demidaemon

My problem with this is that it’s all two tones–dress and shoes are one, her skin is another. She needed some more variety here.

    • Lisa

Really?  You guys don’t like this?  I think she looks fabulous!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

i was just really excited she wasn’t subjecting us to her tits again.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZOCGRJ5UVHBWEQ7LAOQQ2FIOBQ Karen

I think she looks great. Her hair and makeup look amazing. I prefer this to the usual stuff she wears, like that blue dress for a few days ago.

    • bellafigura1

OMG, scar tissue.  OMG.  You guys.  None better, none funnier, none as on target.

    • golspie

I disagree with prevailing opinion. I think she looks great. That lace isn’t like scar-tissue, it’s like a lace curtain through which you imagine you can just about see her gorgeous body.

    • samo_samo

Suede pumps aside, I think she looks great.  The dress looks better on her than it does on the model.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I like it, but I take your point about the color.

The shoes are heinous, but I actually think this is a great step for her style-wise. The color’s off, but the style and fit compared to her usual choices are SUCH an improvement, and I love the hair and makeup!

I like it on her, but Kristin Stewart could have really upped the Goth horror movie side of it!
