Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Bella Heathcote in Chanel Couture

Posted on May 25, 2012

Well, Bella, it didn’t take you long, did it?

Bella Heathcote attends the “Killing Them Softly” Premiere After Party in a Chanel couture gown.

Chanel Fall 2009 Couture Collection

Are we wrong here? We don’t think so. On the model, the dress looks dramatic and chic. On Bella, it looks heavy and kind of mature. Part of the problem here is the length. The hem is hitting at a much lower point on her and it throws off the whole dress. The bust is pretty unflattering on her too. Basically, even though we can detect no fit problems, the whole thing just looks gigantic on her. She’s a tiny little slip of a thing and doesn’t quite have the presence to make this dress work for her

Girl, pack this thing up and send it along to Christina Hendricks, who we’re pretty sure will fill this thing out in the best possible manner (and who could use all the help she can get). Granted, she might have to get the bust altered, but still.

  • You’re not wrong. This is only a few people’s dress that know how to work shit like that.  She is not one of them.

  • Sorry, I just can’t get behind this dress, even on the model.  Being a mullet is just one of its problems.  The design around the bust area looks like a saggy sister-wife at a funeral.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Tend to agree – it’s not much a dress to begin with.

    • The first thing I thought when I saw her was that has a weird fit in the bust and is kinda stumpifying. The first thing I thought when I saw the model in it was that it also had a weird fit in the bust and is kinda stumpifying.

    • EveEve

      This isn’t anyone’s dress.

      • Ogden1990

Maybe Helen Bonham Carter..with a whole bunch of other accessory crap thrown on for good measure.

    • Agreed. I don’t think this would look good on anyone. Maybe Christina Hendricks, but with MANY alterations (chop off the mullet, take off the netting in the neckline), which would make it … not this dress.

      • fallen_ikon

that was my thought, too. Remove the netting and the mullet, and it’d be a lot better. It would also be a different dress entirely, then.

    • Pennymac

Its also giving off a kind of hairy chest vibe. Is that from the camera’s flash? Cause its yucky.

    • Agreed. It’s better on the model (is the lining a different colour? it looks richer, but that might be the real-world flash photography flattening Bella out) but it’s still not good.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

It doesn’t work for all the reasons you said – but especially in the shoulders (or Belle’s lack thereof) – you need to have a good frame to make this work….

  • Isadora Paiva

In addition to the problems you have mentioned, i think the natural make-up was not the way to go if she wanted to sell this dress. It’s a dramatic dress, it needs more dramatic make-up, like the one the model is sporting.

  • SewingSiren

I agree that it’s not her dress, but I don’t like it on the model either. Kinda student.  Nobody’s dress.

  • fringebenefit

Looks like she’s 14 and raided her mother’s closet.

  • Lina_bee

Oh, child, if a designer sends you the unwanted dregs from a 3 yr old collection, say NO! A cute no-name outfit will get you farther!

  • MilaXX

Oh no I do not want to see Christina in this. In fact, let’s just take it out back and burn it cause even on the model, that dress ain’t that pretty.

  • PeaceBang

Indeed, that is not the dress for this fresh-faced little girl. Chop off the mullet and Hendricks could redeem it, but it’s not Chanel’s finest effort.

  • RebeccaKW

The model also has some fierce hair, makeup, and shoes.  Bella has…mall hair and no makeup and hoedown shoes.

  • Susan Crawford

This is a challenging dress, and Bella is too petite, too young, and too ingenue to be able to rock it with the gravitas and va-va-voomery it requires.

  • Her boobs look so sad. I wonder if a good joke might help perk them up.

  • Yes, this is a dress made for a woman with lots of curves. On a tiny thing like this, it looks like a bed.

  • carolynmo

This is Chanel?? Ok. . .

  • carolynmo

This is Chanel?? Ok. . .

  • calimon

It certainly is a whole lotta dress and would take a whole lotta woman to tame it. She is swimming, or rather, drowning in reams of black satiny fabric.

  • the dress would work just fine if she changes her hairstyle to updo. a little tailoring on the dress is also needed:  lower the neckline  and narrow down the waistline.   Her pose doesnt help to show off the dress either.

  • SapphoPoet

Yep, that dress is wearing her.

  • KikiB1

Jada Pinkett could bring it like a Fedex truck….the only accessory it needs is some primo bitchface

  • schadenfreudelicious

i am having a difficult time finding anything redeeming or flattering about this dress, send it back to Herr Lagerfeld for a redo….

  • VicksieDo

That child ruined that nice couture!  Booooo.  Who is she?

  • Christina would look fabulous in that. As long as the girls are under control.

  • Rand Ortega

    Dearest T & Dearest Lo:
Maybe you should have a category called, “Girl, that’s your Mama’s dress”.
There’s so many starlets out there in the celebosphere that insist on wearing dresses too mature for them, they need to get called out for that specific reason. cough*Dakota Fanning*cough
Must agree w/ Tadiana here: This really isn’t anyone’s dress. Funeral schmatta.

  • Sophie Collier

The blah hair isn’t helping either.

  • She looks like a little girl playing dress-up in Mama’s clothes.

    • charlotte

Who’s her mother then? Morticia Addams?

  • NurseEllen

I CANNOT believe that this is a Chanel Couture dress.  Gabrielle would spit out her tea.  and this is SO wrong for such a sweet young thing as Bella.  The contrast between this mature shroud and her bangs and big eyes is positively jarring.

I do love the shoes on the model, though.

  • Yeah, it looks like it’s just hanging on her from the very top of the dress. It doesn’t fit well and is way too big and long.

  • enid soto

I’m not even sure this is anybody’s dress.

  • TSkot

No; doesn’t look chic on the model either.  Dramatic, maybe.

  • This dress is where sad young witches meet Grateful Dead fans.

  • The model has broader shoulders, which balances the width of the skirt. Bella looks like she’s slumpy in this dress. The cocker spaniel hair only makes it worse.

  • 3rdsister

It’s like she has chest hair showing through the sheer panels!?!  What’s up with that?  So strange . . .

  • lunulaoblongata

ffs this honestly looks like one of those comparison photos they take of fast food.  Burger in the ad vs burger out of the bag.

  • cleep1000

Why does it look like there’s a toilet seat under her dress?

    • kimmeister

BWAHAHAHA.  And why does it look like the model is wearing weird toeless hosiery?

  • Kyle Crawford

Endora called…. she wants it back.

  • j_anson

I think that dress in the model photo is benefiting from VERY careful lighting and arrangement. Yech.

  • guest2visits

So much better on the model; but then model has much better lighting, and the dramatic pose to go with it.
It also looks like an appealing chocolate brown color on the model, with great shoes.
Bella looks like a startled but cute mouse in a Disney feature.

  • It Hurt’s To Be In Love

  • quiltrx

This is almost-nobody’s dress.  And the shoulders on Bella’s look very different…there’s no flutter of hinted-at cap sleeve.  Bold shoulders or rounded ones, this isn’t going to look good on anyone.

  • Call me Bee

    Agree 100%.

  • Alisa Rivera

When did Chanel get so ugly? It’s a parade of one hiddy dress after another.

    • AthenaJ

Yes! I always thought Chanel was a name synonymous with elegance and taste… but nowadays I have to admit I’m questioning that… Although to be fair the dress looks fine on the model because she is working it with attitude and it fits her well. On Bella, it’s just a sad, ugly mess.

  • The sheer middle part looks like a hungry werewolf got to it.

  • Who could wear that dress?

  • MzzPants

    Helena Bonham Carter’s night gown.

  • bluefish

Don’t like the dress on either one of them.  Coco must be turning over in her grave!

  • judybrowni

    It’s Morticia’s dress.

    Or Vampira’s.

  • LambeeBaby

I don’t care for it on either of them. It looks like a nightgown.

  • AWS

Send a copy of this dress to Helena Bonham Carter too!

  • GorgeousThings

I don’t think it’s “filling it out” in terms of the bust that’s the problem, though it is a contributing factor. I think it’s that this is built for someone with wide shoulders. Like you say, she’s a little slip of a thing, with narrow shoulders, and that causes the drag lines that you see down the center of the chest.

  • I think if she hadn’t worn it in black, it would’ve helped a lot.

  • DeTrop

Simply put, NO!  She made a wrong choice.  The model looks good and love the runway shoes.

  • First thing I saw was what looks like a section of a letter O in the center of her gown.  I don’t see it on the model and so am a bit confused as to what it is.  Any guesses?

  • ashley d

This is one of those “things you can also wear pregnant” … which is never a good thing.

  • Sweetvegan

This is the problem with so many celebrities wearing loaner dresses. Don’t the designers care that their work is not being represented properly? If you’re loaning a dress to a celeb who is 6 inches shorter than your model, you need to shorten it.

  • Beth G

Yeah… you gotta have chesticles to make that thing work.
