Ginnifer Goodwin in Jonathan Saunders

Posted on May 16, 2012

Ginnifer, sweetie. You and we have had quite the contentious pretend-relationship over the years. The roots of our conflict are easy to articulate. We value style in those whose livelihoods so depend on their image and who are known to receive hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of free clothes and accessories to wear, as well as the services of world-class (supposedly) stylists and hair and makeup artists. You, on the other hand, dress like a crazy person. A crazy person with bad taste who doesn’t own a mirror. We’re sorry, dear. It really did have to be said.

But we always appreciated (in a condescending sort of way) the fact that you clearly want to look stylish and like to wear interesting clothes. Sure, you get it wrong 99 times out of a hundred, but at least you’re still trying, like a plucky little fashion engine that could.

As such, when you do stumble upon that one time out of a hundred tries where you actually get it right and wind up looking pretty damn good…

… we don’t blame you for bitch-posing a little bit. You’ve earned the right to gloat.

But not too much, girl. Those shoes aren’t anything to get haughty over.

  • the pose is cracking me up, but she does look really good.

    • Sobaika

I think she’s trying to make sure she looks as tall/lean as possible.

      • Oh, is that what that is? Lol. I like that she fills the dress up better than the the model

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

        well, aren’t we all?  😉

    • Her expression kills me more than the pose.

  • Really now, is it impossible for actors to specify what shoe size they need when being given shoes to wear?   “I wear a 6B”  How hard is that?  Those things look like they are at least a size too big.    LOVE the dress though, even though it looks like its hard as rock.

    • I agree! But I have noticed when I try on styles like this, that even though the size is correct, just the basic style of the shoe does that weird side gap thing. Not sure why!

      •  Then they are not well designed in the first place.  The kind of gapping we are seeing here, should not ever be happening.

    • Tigrrl

It’s because free shoes always come in the sample size of 9 (according to my stylist sister). It bothers me so much though, and I still can’t figure out how they walk in shoes that are too big and 8 inches high. Do they clomp around like a toddler? Or do they glue the shoes on with some secret drag queen trick?

      • janetjb

Size 9??!  That seems awfully large for most actresses.

        • But not for amazon-tall models.

        • AnaRoW

Size 9 sounds about right. Most women I wear about a size 8. If you’re working with tall models you don’t really want to go smaller than that.

          • LesYeuxHiboux

I’m only 5’9″ and my feet are size 11.

          • 5’9″ and i’m a 9.5, and my feet look a little small for my body honestly.

      •  Interesting, but one would think that when someone this famous is going to be photographed in their product, that they would want it presented in the best possible way.  Bizarre.

      • There used to be a discount store here that carried sample shoes, the ones the sales reps had to show the stores.  They were always size 5 so that as many as possible could fit in a sample case.  It was great for my teeny sister in law but not me (size 8!)

        • Rrroza

Also, shoes look prettier when small. Some shoes, when seen in a larger size, become ungainly.

        • amywinns

Well that’s understandable. But sales rep/display samples and showhorse samples quite obviously must serve very different purposes.

      • cmb92191

I am a size 9.. so if any stylist out there want to give them away (lol!)  I promise I will take those shoes anywhere interesting, which in my life is Target, out to a restaurant or Wegmans..  I’d wear them to the gym, to the post office… anywhere!

      • amywinns

(Sorry, I found the novelty of the statement very exciting. 😉

    • Yes!  When I looked at the shoes and the way she’s posing, it reminded of me a little girl dressing up in her mother’s shoes and clothing and vamping her way out to the living room show the adults how fine she looks.

  • why is her face orange? it’s like oompa loompa time!

    • slightlybitterkitten

Seriously!  TLo point to shoes; we, clearly, point to face paint.

    • SouthernGirlRena

Her arms and legs match but her face is a completely different color.  it does look bizarre.  Doesn’t she have anyone stand back and take a look at the whole picture before she steps in front of a camera?

  • Jenna Kuhmann

Why on earth is she holding her head that way?  Does she not understand that that facial expression endears her to no one?

    • Little_Olive

Seriously, she is starting to annoy the hell outta me (and I used to kind of like her). One more look at that overexposed pixie hair and I’m done.

    • RebeccaKW

That’s not fabulous, fierce bitch face.  That’s haughty, annoying bitchy face.  Like she’ll get the waiter fired for making eye contact with her.

  • Emily Rose

Fire the makeup artist, though, because her face and neck are a completely different color than the rest of her.

  • Is that a leather dress that actually  works? Wow! I am impressed! I bet she has a cute smile though, and I’d like to see it at some point.

  • funkypeanut

Removing the black shirt certainly improved the outfit.

  • Beth G

Well… now we know what the inside of her nose looks like…. yippee…..

  • Hetha Innis

The robot arms come close to ruining the entire effect. She has a great smile, too bad we never see it!

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, dear.  I think she’s posing like that because she’s squeezed into a leather dress and she feels fat. She looks like she’s straining to get out of it. I may be projecting.

  • Oh Ginnifer, you give January Jones a good run for having a constant scowl on your face.  This looks great though. Next time make sure the foundation on your face matches the rest of the color of your body.

  • M

That pose is absurd.  I can’t with that.

  • AuntieAnonny

Gorgeous, but I can’t help but think “duct tape dress”.

    I blame prom season.

    • Spicytomato1

Duct tape…sounds like a Project Runway challenge in the making. In fact I’m surprised they haven’t gone there yet.

  • MilaXX

cut look but the posing darn near ruins it

  • To me, the biggest problem for her is that she tries too hard. Her awkward desperation to be regarded as a fashion diva comes across. Girl needs to either find a style that she is truly comfortable with, or work on her spezzatura.

    • AmandaCathleen

I couldn’t agree more. It’s a fabulous dress, but I can’t help but think it would look so much better on someone who would actually be comfortable in it (and know how to werq it), like Zoe Saldana or even Olivia Palermo.

    • Rrroza

oooh. nice Italian word. What does it mean in this sense? I assume it doesnt involve heraldry.

      • Actually sprezzatura pretty much translates into “nonchalance”. It’s from Castiglione’s “The Book of the Courtier” from the early 16th century. Basically, it’s the ability to do accomplish something difficult while making it appear effortless. For a lucky few, taste and poise are innate. But in the case of Ms. Goodwin, if she rigorously rehearsed red carpet poses with a coach and became more educated about fashion choices that suited her frame and personality, in time she would look much more polished and “natural”.

  • Spicytomato1

Dress: Adorable. Shoes: Ugly. Attitude: Supremely unattractive.

  • kikisayshi

Love her and LOVE this dress. I’m not sure about all the bitchface that she’s been showing lately though.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Is this bitch-posing, or “oh my GOD this dress is HEAVY LEATHER up to my NECK in this air UGH I’M DYING”?

    Nah, it totally is bitch-posing.

  • She is incredibly alluring with slightly longer hair. This pixie cut is doing her no favours.

  • sashaychante

The dress really suits her and her pixie hair.  Her shoes are boring, and maybe don’t fit?  The model’s shoes give the outfit a young, funky vibe.

  • alyce1213

Okay, it’s better without the black blouse — that would have been a real tragedy — but I still don’t think this dress suits her body.  The silhouette is not bad, raising the waist to lengthen her is good, but the clunky weaving of the skirt has the opposite effect.  It’s all so stiff-looking.

I don’t think she’s earned the right to gloat or bitch pose.  She’s a cute girl, but let’s leave that for the ladies down to whom we bow (ouch!).

  • BazoDee

I can;t get past the posing. WOW! How funny.
She looks great. It fits, it flatters – YAY! But ugh -the make-up and lack of accessories – she looks like she’s trying it on and mugging in the dressing room mirror.

  • PeggyOC

Very nice, but she has to stop doing that thing with her head and her face.  It’s not flattering.  Try just a smile, sweetie.  You’re so pretty when you smile.

  • Snorted my coffee out at “like a plucky little fashion engine.” Such a freaking hilariously vivid image! Thank you!

  • She can not pull off that pose Why does she do that? Just go out there and smile, maybe a little giggle. Stop acting like you look like Iman. Recognize your limitations darling ’cause that is a fab dress.

  • Super sassy!

  • SpcilK

    Nice job lady!

  • Anathema_Device

The pose almost ruins it. Her problem with clothes is that her tastes don’t match her looks. But you’re right, she nailed it this time. I really love this dress and love it on her. Head-to-toe leather is hard to pull off, but the basketweave skirt lightens up the look. I’m so glad she didn’t wear it as a jumper.

Okay, Ginnifer: Stay on the beam fashion-wise, and we’ll work on the posing next.

    •  smile, damn ya, smile!

      • Anathema_Device

She doesn’t even need to plaster on a big grin, just a mildly pleasant expression would do.

        •  Anything other than that scowl would be a vast improvement.

  • Orange face.

  • Jess5628

The dress is great. The blue eyeshadow is not.

  • sherrietee

That is a pretty awesome dress.  Shoes are unfortunate.  And too big.

  • mozzer0906

Hate the pose, but that dress is hella fierce!

  • jw_ny

Head up, chin down, shoulders back, and tits forward…well 3 out of 4.  😉

Dress is really cute on her.

  • EEKstl

Dress is adorable but that ATTITUDE!  Girl, you are NOT all that!

  • kimmeister

Now that is a shade of dusty rose that I can get behind!

  • She continues to bug the hell out of me.

  • janetjb

The dress looks fabulous on her although heavy and out of season (my pet peeve).

  • kittenwithaquip

Aww, fuck it. I dig her and her attitude. People are going to rag on her no matter what, may as well give some bitch face. And if you lived through the ’70s, you know blue eyeshadow. That is not a blue eyeshadow to get uppity about. To get uppity it needs to be robin’s egg blue and go all the way your to your overly-plucked eyebrows.

  • unbornfawn

Hard to argue. She’s looking pretty good here.

  • Pennymac

Ginnifer needs to go to the China! Chow! School of Tiny Women Dressing Fiercely. I do like this look on her.

  • aimee_parrott

I love the dress on her, but her face is so ORANGE.  She needs a better makeup person, for sure.  I’m not a big fan of the shoes either, and I notice that while this is not an IN OR OUT post, neither is it a WERQ.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

After the floral pj horror, this is a cute, kind of sassy look-In.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I like the dress, but the posing is a little ridiculous. Calm down, girl.

  • bluefish

Why in hell she is posing like that I dunno.  Maybe bummed that she just can’t get it quite right?  I think she’s lovely and a good actress — and I love her cool haircut.  But the pose is nuts — Good dress for her.  Agree on the shoes.

  • I think she looks great.

  • Amy Ellinger

I just want to whack her on the top of her head. Chin down, dear.

    Otherwise, very cute.

  • God. Every time I see this woman, I think to myself, “You AGAIN???”  I don’t know why, but she irritates me so. much.  Maybe it’s the supercilious posing?  Maybe supercilious is actually who she is?

  • She looks much better in this dress than the model does!  Brava!

  • marilyn

    She looks great!

  • TieDye64

She looks good. Finally. But man, that’s some annoying posing going on there.

  • sweetlilvoice

I bet she was all sweaty later…that material looks like it doesn’t breathe. It may just be a piece of vinyl.

  • I’ll bet she was very hot and sweaty under all that leather.

  • cleep1000

Sorry, but the yellow face that doesn’t match the pale arms and legs ruins it.

  • Lina_bee

I adore this to pieces! Mod works on her; Hippie doesn’t.

  • Stubenville

Ugh. Stiff and plastic looking, both dress and face.

  • Caaro3

Love, love, love the runway look.

  • howdoilook

I can’t ever get past her bitchface.

  • That pose is painful.

  • CatherineRhodes

Her foundation is a completely different color from her arms. Sloppy.

Irrational celebrity hate. Who can forget that ugly jumpsuit from before?

  • SapphoPoet

At least if she spills food or drink, she can wipe it right off herself. Plastic clothing is handy that way.

  • jennifervney

Ay, the posing is so painful. She just ruined the dress, which was otherwise great!

  • joe_tey83

Oh well, even people with bad taste can get it right one time out of a hundred. But it’s a crazy dress and she just luck into it and has clearly not given up the crazy. I expect nothing to change.

Anyhoo, how does one “appreciate condescendingly”? That’s quite an oxymoron.

  • Aurumgirl

Is the pose meant to be a joke?  Are we laughing with her, or….?

  • Sophie Collier

Maybe she noticed a little sagginess on her neck?  Or someone told her to hold her head up and she’s overcompensating?  Anyway, cute dress but I do like it on the model (with shirt and those shoes) better.

  • nannypoo

How can she walk in those shoes? They’re enormous.

  • enchanted216

Oh I hate it, and the bag and shoes are hiddy, too.

  • bellafigura1

    I’m sicka huh!

  • Lilak

This get-up makes the poor girl look like a Weeble, for cryin’ out loud.  Style masochism in spades.
Not to mention the peculiar makeup & variety of skin tones.

It is with great regret that I am abandoning all hope for Miss Goodwin.

  • quiltrx

Her pose is foolish (I personally like to think she’s pretending she’s Annie Lennox–it will never work for you, love), but the dress is pretty badass and fits really well.

  • ThaliaMenninger

As nutty as she dresses, I find I smile when I look at her. She is so very much herself and nobody else. So, you go, little You!

  • Yeah

  • chelwi

Her makeup looks awful though. Her face is a few shades darker than the rest of her body and it’s distracting me. Cute dress. Terrible, terrible posing.

  • I really hate her hair. I love a pixie cut, but it is so severe, she may as well shave it all off.

  • Is this bish serious? gworl!!!

  • Vanessak69

I like the dress but I just HATE that hair on her. WTF is that pose about?
