Emmy Ladies for Hollywood Reporter Magazine

Posted on May 31, 2012

We wouldn’t quite call this your pretty for the day. Sure, these ladies are all very pretty, as are the gowns they’re sporting, but it’s a pretty standard editorial otherwise. Bit of a ripoff of the Vanity Fair covers – and just as white, unfortunately. These are apparently the top contenders for an Emmy nomination for Best Actress in a Drama Series, which strikes us as jumping the gun a bit, but Hollywood’s nothing if not a little jittery.

But hey; pretty dresses. Mireille Enos is unrecognizable.

The Hollywood Reporter magazine featured the Emmy top contenders for Best Actress in A Drama Series photographed by Joe : Claire Danes (Showtime’s “Homeland”), Mireille Enos (AMC’s “The Killing”), January Jones (AMC’s “Mad Men”), Julianna Margulies, (CBS’ “The Good Wife”), Emmy Rossum (Showtime’s “Shameless”), and Kyra Sedgwick (TNT’s “The Closer”).

Gah, they all look so depressed! It’s like a red carpet Midol commercial.

See, they look more constipated than depressed to me, Activia comes to mind.

LOL – you are so right

      • charlotte

It’s because they all don’t stand a chance against Elisabeth Moss.

        • Isadora Paiva

Oh, I hope so! That scene with Don on the last episode was one of the most amazing pieces of acting I have ever seen (because of both actors, it has to be said).

Btw, it seems so odd to put January in there! I mean, she has become a recurring character in the series, if she were to be nominated it would no longer be in the company of these lead actresses, right?

          • Melissa Brogan

Last year, January went up for noms in lead, but this year the report is she’s back to supporting along with Christina. However, Jessica Paré (Megan) is up against Elisabeth for lead.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/63F4DF4VDHSF2LPYOSWO5ZHAGU AdrienneD

Wish they had styled Julianna’s hair differently.  She look harsh and older, while Kyra, who is basically the same age, looks great. Otherwise, meh.

      • sekushinonyanko

They covered 1/3 of Kyra’s face with hair, so I guess she does look younger…

Hmm… perhaps. But I think Mizz Margolies is giving great face. I like.

        • RebeccaKW

Yes, she’s really the only one who I think is giving great face.

    • HobbitGirl

How is JJo in the running for an Emmy? She’s barely been in the show this season! (Thank the gods.)

      • KittenBritches

I was wondering the same thing.

      • MissAnnieRN

I agree. Also, totally don’t think she’s a stand out on the show. Nominate Betty jr – aka kiernan shipka! Also the girl who plays Arya Stark is awesome. Way better than JJ.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

She’s not necessarily in the running. The nominees haven’t been established, and won’t be for another month or two.

      • Little_Olive

You know, I am not that fond of her either, but I wonder if her acting is what really created Betty as a detached and cold (but not really an obvious bitch) instead of the 50’s ingenue she might have been… I guess she deserves some credit.

      • Melissa Brogan

The way Emmys work is that actors submit themselves for nominations. Then the actual nominees that go on to the awards are chosen from those. So all January has to do is submit herself for an Emmy nom. But she put herself in as supporting this year, not lead.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=13953311 Missy Covington

They all look slightly confused/distressed. And apparently at least three of them are having hair-tucking issues…or they really love having pictures of women mid-hair-tuck (it’s the *thoughtful* hair tuck).

Also: January Jones as female lead for Mad Men? This season? Really? I’m not speaking to the acting skills so much as the fact that she’s been in, what, two episodes?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6RS6NLL44AED3E4QWIYTDQGU6I Psy_Chick

Yeah, but she was fat. If you let them mess up your actressy perfection in any way, you are almost guaranteed an award for it.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

The actual article says nothing about “Leading”. “The Drama Actresses” is just a nicer headline than “pretty white women who have appeared on drama shows this year”

    • http://twitter.com/MinaBinaXina MinaBinaXina

I find it very telling that there are no women of color in this spread.

      • cteeny21

I agree! I am white, but it really annoys me. Kerry Washington, who is drop dead gorgeous, could have been on here. Taraji P. Henson is also another good actress.

        • CarolinLA

Kerry Washington is saddled by the overwroughtness brought by the Shonda-Rhimes-let-me-talk-as-fast-as-I-can-to-prove-that-I’m-passionate drama.  Taraji, I adore on Person of Interest.

        • Cousin_Rose

+1 for Kerry Washington.  Maybe she didn’t want to do it :).  Sure hope she is nominated and WINS!

      • mountainFashionista

Now that my consciousness has been raised about this issue (thanks to Vanity Fair and the TLO Kitten Squad), I can’t unsee the ghostliness of today’s entertainment media.

Such a sad state of affairs.

How can January Jones possibly be considered a female lead for this season of Mad Men?  We’ve barely seen her!  Elizabeth Moss should definitely be a contender, or just based on last Sunday’s performance, Christina Hendricks.

I’m pretty sure she can’t, I seem to remember that she was submitted for nomination as “supporting” and Jessica Pare was submitted as “lead.”

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=720742723 Sarah Winningham

Yup: “January Jones will be competing as a supporting actress instead of a lead actress for the Emmys this year, The Hollywood Reporter writes,” (via vulture at ny mag).

      • MilaXX

Depending on the eligibility dates, the nom may come from last season.

    • http://twitter.com/ZumaZoum Eric

      January Jones? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

      *ahem*

It should have been Elizabeth Moss in here, or maybe Jessica Paré as I’ve heard she is campaigning for it.

No love for the Game of Thrones ladies??

      • justineyy

        Seriously, where is Daenerys?

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OD35QQZNBPZJXWTCBY7N4EE7VY Sarah

Wailing about her fucking dragons, no doubt.

          • jessieroset

            hilarious.

        • rawrgrowlrawr

Forget Daenerys, where’s Arya? That girl is talented.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MBZQXGWCTBDTAZMEM4S2EJUNUQ Katie

I have a feeling these were not necessarily the top contenders so much as the “top possibilities we could get to show up and take a picture.”

        • AudreysMom

These (for the most part) surely do seem like the usual suspects for “women on TV who also do magazine features”.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VW5XHSH45FBZ2ZEZJARYHILIZQ Leah

Maisie Williams! That girl is just ridiculous.

Everyone on GoT was submitted as supporting.

    • birkatbaby

the last photo looks like a Desperate Housewives ad.

    • EEKstl

They’re all beautiful yet depressingly robotic.  And this editorial is waaaay too derivative of VF.  Paging an Art Director with a fresh point of view!

    • schadenfreudelicious

While it’s refreshing to actually see a forehead with a line in it (Julianna), that Alfalfa hairstyle really isn’t doing her any favors…

      • makeityourself

I think that shot of Julianna’s wrinkle and eyebrow is great. Love it.

Re: Vanity Fair. At least The Hollywood Reporter let them wear clothes.

    • msdamselfly

      the last photo is lovely

    • butterflysunita

What a terribly dull cover.  I’m not sure why, because I really like some of these actresses.

      • Beardslee

What’s dull is how they have been styled out of personality.

    • luciaphile

The actual interview they did was pretty interesting. Meh about the photo shoot stuff…

    • cteeny21

Merielle Enis cleans up very well.

      • schadenfreudelicious

she’s probably thrilled to be out of the rain….:)

        • CarolinLA

They couldn’t have a made a bigger mess out of The Killing.  It didn’t rain every fucking second during the Danish version and when it did, it wasn’t a fucking monsoon.

          • schadenfreudelicious

totally agreed, the Danish version is far superior in every way, especially since they actually solved the damn murder by the end of the season!  Joel Kinnaman is the only reason i continue to watch that trainwreck….

    • girliecue

Maybe they all look so cranky because they’re irritated THR is already shilling for the Emmys and they’ve been forced to join in the inanity. I feel bad for the photographer because they look like they’re ready to tear his heart out with their bare hands if he asks for one more shot.

    • alyce1213

Why are they dressed in neutrals in front of neutral, busy backgrounds?
      Lousy pictures, no concept whatsoever.

    • j_anson

      Not enough beige. More, please.

    • http://twitter.com/poptartsjen Pop Tarts Jen

My first thought was, “January Jones? NO WAY! She’s a supporting actress at best.” Second thought was, “WHERE IS LENA HEADEY!?”

    • MilaXX

Bland on every level imaginable. bad enough there are no people of color, but these ladies play some pretty badass characters and here they all look blandy McBland.

    • CarolinLA

Can you imagine that editorial if Kathy Bates were a contender?

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Doesn’t mean she’s not a contender. These are just the actresses THR felt like featuring.

    • justineyy

Wait…January nominated for Mad Men?! For her 20 minutes of screen time this season?! Where are Peggy and Joan? I guess skinny and blonde trumps actually being a part of the current season. >:O

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

No way January Jones gets a best actress nomination.. or else someone paid for it. Even Ken’s wife has had a higher profile this season.

ETA: also, that dress (while beautiful on the model) makes January look like a mummy.

      • texashistorian

You mean Cynthia? :) You know, it took me a minute to remember her name. And I might not even have it right, after all.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh hey…….you…..     (still cracks me up.)

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

Lol yes. She’s always going to be just Ken’s Wife for me because I can never remember her name.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Where, oh where is Taraji P. Henson? And really? January Jones over Elizabeth Moss?

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

I will be shocked if Emmy Rossum get’s a nomination. I love “Shameless” with all my heart and the girl is uber talented but, yeah, the Emmys are definitely going to ignore that show. The same way they stay ignoring “SouthLAnd” and the fabulous Regina King. And the same way they are going to ignore “Scandal” and the awesome Kerry Washington.

      It is what it is.

    • unbornfawn

They are all thin, white and in a narrow age range. Yawn.

    • reebism

There is absolutely no reason for January Jones to be there…except that Elisabeth Moss is shooting in New Zealand or something like that.

      • Hermione_Granger

And Christina Hendricks was busy too?

        • reebism

Her fabulosity could not have been toned down enough for the likes of this. ;)

    • Lina_bee

The huge freaking margin of jumping the gun is both ridic & offensive. Add the whiteness factor, as if there are no Emmy-qualified women of color working in television, and it’s exponentially worse. Plus, it’s a bland-as-fuck photo shoot.

    • joything

      Kyra Sedgwick’s dress FTW.

    • Laylalola

Does the Hollywood Reporter know something about the Betty Draper character this season that we don’t? That fat suit alone is not enough for a nomination.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/XZTPYIF64TK3QDEMWUAS3KULFI Ted

Wow, only Jones even gives some good faces because other ladies look bored out of their minds

    • golden_valley

The make up on these poor women looks terrible…like stuff put on a corpse.   Even the dark haired ladies look death like.

    • http://twitter.com/DaxSnaer Dax Snaer

Interesting – Claire Danes plays this really dramatic role in HBO’s “Homeland.”  I mean she’s cussing and kicking ass all the time, plus, she’s bi-polar and brilliant (her character).  It’s so complex.  But they’ve wiped every bit of expression from her.  Julianna Margulies on the other hand looks exactly as tightly-wound yet veiled, the way her character survives on “The Good Wife.”  January Jones is so good at her part, Ice Queen suits her.  I don’t care.   True Blood has more personality and, well, blood.  These people are as pale and lifeless as corpses.

    • Carla_Charlton

I’m officially tired of the beige/champagne-colored dresses.

    • texashistorian

Good grief, could it get any more beige than this? Beige scares me… I’ve always said I don’t want to live a beige life, and here are these women, sporting it like it’s gonna take them places! And I don’t think January Jones should get an Emmy for wearing a fat suit. And why does Kyra Sedgwick (sp?) look like she has chew stuffed in her cheeks? Claire Danes looks like a piano teacher. A really mean one. And I don’t know the red-headed lady in the black dress, but it looks like she’s getting ready to pee. I need a drink (preferably a Pink Squirrel or something cheerful) after seeing all this blandness.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonathan-Franklin/1329318158 Jonathan Franklin

January Jones got a nomination?  Mireille looks fantastic!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’m a bit confused about that since we’ve seen so little of her this season.  And let’s be honest, we all need more Betty in our lives.

    • afabulous50

Am a devoted fan of The Closer. So of course Mrs. Bacon is my choice. I will confess I’m not a Mad Men fan.

    • quiltrx

      Emmy FTW!

(but January got the coolest dress.)

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Geesh. Claire Danes is wearing one ugly dress!

    • frankystein123

The Vanity Fair cover is a lot better.

    • MissMariRose

      It’s Margulies by a mile.

    • guest2visits

I think they’re all beautiful in this layout; but I don’t understand the purpose of the last pic; why are they standing there in such
a strange, dejected line up; almost looks like they don’t know how they got there.  Beautiful dresses.

    • siriuslover

probably the best pic there is the one of Kyra Sedgwick.

    • TieDye64

Eh, rather bland. Instead of fierce it reads as a bit depressing. You’re right, I would never have known that was Mireille Enos.

    • ccm800

Looks like a glammed up PSA for depression.

    • donkeygospel6

For a moment I thought that was Julianne Moore on the cover since she’s guaranteed to win Lead Actress in a TV Movie for Game Change, but then I realized it’s Enos! Wow, unrecognizable indeed.

January, you rock that shit.  Was the theme pose for the day “put your hand in your hair and let me snap away”…it’s a bit strange.

    • howdoilook

White, white, white, white, white, white. What is this, Vanity Fair?

    • http://profiles.google.com/alison.sigman Alison Sigman

I love me some Betty Draper, but has JaJo really been in this season enough to grab a nomination? Wouldn’t Christina be a better pick?

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

I love January’s spider webs, but no way is she getting a best actress nomination for 3 episodes.

    • Elizabeth Silverstein

JJo looks kind of fierce if a bit ghostly, but no way can girl get an emmy for lead actress for being in two episodes of MM.

    • CatherineRhodes

If that award means anything, it has to go to Claire Danes, who was brilliant as the CIA operative coming off a bipolar episode. Wow.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I want to be Kyra Sedgwick.
