David Beckham for ELLE UK

Posted on May 29, 2012

Oh, we could go on about how ELLE UK made history by featuring a man on its cover in support of the summer Olympics or we could just copy and paste something like…

“David Beckham is a national hero,’ ELLE Editor in Chief Lorraine Candy said. ‘He is an icon and Elle is known for featuring icons on its cover. This is a first for us on the newsstand and I believe he is loved by men and women alike.”

But really, we only have to say one thing: Darlings, here’s the meat for your lunch. Enjoy.

David Beckham covers the July 2012 issue of ELLE UK magazine photographed by Doug Inglish.

He is not usually my thing, but that second shot showing his face up close is amazing.  Talk about aging well.

    • DaringMiss

Ralph Fiennes should look like that.  Sigh.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

He’s got that same thing Clint Eastwood has… he will age well, indeed.

      • shirab

Wonder how those sleeve tattoos will look when he’s Eastwood’s age…

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=677547537 John Hodgins

Just a little saggier like everyone else’s except with a better story.  His skin hasn’t been stretched by being overweight and he’s in shape so probably not too bad.  Why, yes, I have tattoos and always wonder why people say that.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Same here. I’m trying to come up with some standard answers I get to the standard questions: “Did that hurt?” “Does that have any meaning?” “How will you feel about that when you’re old?” And these are never in the context of any kind of conversation, just out of the blue. (I’m thinking of ‘Does a bear s*** in the woods?” as a standard answer for question #1.)

          • TheOriginalLulu

Does it really bother people if someone asks if their tattoo has any meaning? That’s surprising to me; I would think they would want to talk about it. Or is it just bothersome because it’s the same question countless times?

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

It’s one thing if it’s in the context of a longer conversation about one’s tattoo. However, I’ve had multiple people just walk up to me out of nowhere and ask “does that mean anything?” I experience it as invasive for many reasons, but especially because it seems to imply that I would permanently modify my body with something that has NO meaning. It also feels like any other out-of-nowhere question (“is that your real haircolor?” etc) that refers to something on our bodies – creepy, no boundaries, etc.

My grandfather is 76, and has a tattoo on his arm. It’s faded, and yeah a tiny bit saggier, but it still looks fine.
I have a tattoo as well. I’ve gotten the “I bet that’ll look really bad when you’re 80..” well, considering what I’m sure the rest of my skin will look like at age 80, I don’t think I’ll especially care..

          • http://twitter.com/miss186 Allie

Yessss. Of course my tattoos are going to be saggy and wrinkled and faded when I’m 80; all of me is going to be. At least the tattooed bits will be there on purpose.

    • mozzer0906

Agreed, he has always had a fantastic body, but dang, that 2nd photo of his face is outstanding.

    • NinaBoo

Vicky must be giving him lessons.

  • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

Mmm, boy gives some delicious face.

    Thanks!

  • lucyloo222

Maybe I am the only woman in the universe to think this way but as fine as he is, I think he kind of ruined himself with an overload of tattoos.  Moderation in all things, David.  Seriously.

    • Dr. Derf van der Derf

I’m opposite, I think he is totally boring looking until he adds all those tattoos!

      • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

I agree with Dr Derf ;-) I especially like a full sleeve tatt, if the colours (or lack of) are harmonious and it’s expertly done.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I agree, not a fan of the ink sleeves. I have nothing against tattoos in general and think they’re kind of hot in some cases.
I respect the fact that they’re his arms and what does he care what I think, but still I think there’s a point where it all just becomes too much. I still love him and think he’s the hotness, but the ink isn’t hot to me anymore.

  • MilaXX

I’m not used to seeing his tats on display like this.  I kinda dig it.

  • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

*whistles* Damn. Serious face in that 2nd shot.

Also can we declare a moratorium on complaining about his tattoos, which happens every time there’s a Beckham post? They ain’t goin’ anywhere, people! :P

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

Late to the party because I have never seen any complaints about his tattoos, not doubting it though.  I can say I believe in people doing what they think is best.  However, I do also feel like saying aloud, I just don’t get the appeal of tattoos.

      • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

I promise. Every time there’s a Becks post people get all fussed up over the tattoos. They are permanent. It’s not going away. And lots of us think they’re pretty hot, anyway (not to say you’re not entitled to your opinion, but it kinda doesn’t matter either way, really, since they’re not going away.

        • JMB_edits

The thing that amuses me about his tats are how completly they disappear when he “suits up” (like in a recent TLO post with an umbrella).  Like you get two Becks for the price of one!   Mmmmm…. 2 two Becks! ;)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=677547537 John Hodgins

Amen.  Enough with the complaining!!  :-)

      • HomeOfficeGirl

I believe we can all be “fabulous and opinionated” on this site… it’s historically been encouraged.

        • oohsparkley!

Exactly!  We are here to discuss every possible fashion choice and free to discuss whether we like it or not.

  • BazoDee

I love me some sleeve ink. Adam Levine and David Beckham have both done a fine job of adding to their sculpted bods. Drool.

  • Jill_3

Utterly delicious. And as someone who saw him (stalked him) once in person, on RODEO FREAKING DRIVE no less, may I just say that he looks even better in person.

  • SpcilK

    Thanks, I was starving.

  • Catiline

I just did some majorly undignified staring at that first picture.  Thank you.

  • Kate4queen

    ‘happy sigh’ :)

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/toodleskitty79?feature=guide AWS

Holy shit… How does Posh ever get out of bed with this man there?

  • ccinnc

I had a big greasy hamburger for lunch. Thanks for this nice lean meat.  I’m on protein overload, mmm.

  • Lilithcat

“David Beckham is a national hero,’ ELLE Editor in Chief Lorraine Candy said.

    Oh, please.  That’s utterly ridiculous.

Have to say, hyperbolic editors aside, I do not see the appeal.  In that first pic particularly, he’s looking quite skeevy.  It creeps me out.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Thank you, Lilithcat. Doesn’t do anything for me, either. And hearing him speak is even worse.

  • XPT

I don’t have anything bad to say about him, I just don’t find him hot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Oh David, I never tire of looking at you.  It’s only shocking that you and Vicki don’t have as many children as the Duggars.

  • Lina_bee

Er…THAT was the best shot from the pool series? Really?? Hello, he’s all squinty and hunched — not flattering! But the aqua shot is nicely framed and his ink is absolutely mesmerizing, even if that grey tee does nothing for him. I guess it’ll be interesting to see whether this becomes a trend.

    • BazoDee

You are looking at his face??

      • Lina_bee

Yeah, I am. I prefer magazine cover shots to have an engaging face on them, and Becks has such great eyes that I can’t believe they wasted them here.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

He’s my national hero and I’m not even British.
    Bless you TLo.

  • SapphoPoet

Is he really tattooed like that?

Edited to add: Ok, should have read the comments before posting. Guess they are real.

Edited further to add: I’d say calling him a national hero is going a bit far. Icon, sure, ok. Hero? Not so much.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

BTW that’s another question that those of us with tattoos just love – “is that real?” because apparently, i look like someone who would put fake tattoos on my body like an 8-year-old at a birthday party.

  • ClevelandburbsBeth

I think he looks like he is in pain in the first shot; there had to be more flattering shots from which to choose. Also, too many tattoos for my taste, although I suppose I shouldn’t say so, since they aren’t going anywhere.

  • lilibetp

Meh.  And I know some people like tattoos, but I’m not one of them.  Frankly, I’ve never seen anyone who looked classier because of their tattoos.

  • bluefish

I hate the tatoos — hate tatoos on anyone actually except sailors.  I’ve never felt a thing for him — Second shot saves it because cover shot is a total ugh for me.  Narcissism and leather.

  • Judy_J

I’m not offended by tattoos, but he’s got TOO MUCH INK.

  • julnyes

Beckham falls on my list of men who do nothing for me, but I objectively understand that they are attractive (though I really don’t like his voice). Having said that, these are two nice pics of the man – he is in amazing shape and shows off his assets to their best advantage.

  • tired_mommy

Love the photos! Kind of think the sub-head “Summer Shopping 381 easy to wear dresses…” seems odd next to Becks…

  • lordandtaylor

Nice piece of meat and he gives good face…but I find all the tats a big turn off. Where are more photos from “Magic Mike”?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Um, yes-a side of Joe Manganiello for an afternoon snack with a Channing Tatum chaser would be delightful!

  • http://profiles.google.com/christine.jain Christine Clark

More like “Elle MEATS Beckham.” Not that I’m complaining

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

The meat in my lunch was shrimp. Same thing?

  • Spicytomato1

No thanks, not hungry I guess. You guys and kittens can fight over my portion. And thank goodness he didn’t smile with teeth and reveal his Ricky Gervais resemblance, or I might have really lost my appetite.

  • michelle shields

    all kinds of yummy!

  • Amy Ellinger

aaand this is why I could never be a vegetarian. YUM!!!!

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

He’s got a great body; I don’t mind the tats; he can model, but he does nothing for me.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

He is definitely not my thing.  I’ve heard him speak.  Between that and the arms, it really doesn’t matter what his face looks like.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Oh no no, you must NEVER listen to the sound of his voice. EVER. It ruins the entire Beckham experience.
If he’s on TV and I see a microphone approaching his general direction, I hit the mute button before he even opens his mouth. Like children back in the day, Beckham should be seen and not heard.

  • golspie

He is the epitome of what my mother would have called ‘common’. I don’t think Americans have a word for that.

  • marilyn

Hate the tattoos.  Otherwise, a gorgeous man.

  • HobbitGirl

    Oooh, yes please.

  • la_lala

Holy mother of Christ. I usually find blond, blue-eyed men really unattractive; Becks is one of only two that I would totes jump in an alleyway if given the chance. (The other, of course, being Alexander Skaarsgaard.)

  • sleepycat

I am attracted to his style and edge, but some reason I am not attracted to him, it is really weird.

  • guest2visits

I think he’s a good looking guy…. but I don’t get the appeal of tattoos to begin with.

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

    Why hello, Mr Beckham

  • NNgela

but really… who wears jeans in the pool??

  • http://twitter.com/jalae Janey

I giggle when I look at him…he’s really so incredibly attractive. And his face OMG

  • MsMajestyk

I’m a fan of Becks. As long as he didn’t speak, all was well, though I recently saw an interview with him and he must be taking voice lessons because he didn’t sound so Mickey Mouse.

I would be more on board if they had put him in some retro swim trunks for the cover.  His legs are fantastic, why cover them?  Jeans+pool=lame.

  • H3ff

Amazing. In a few years, he has gone from football star to straight-up football hooligan.

  • quiltrx

Damn, he sure gives some sexy face!  And something about those wet jeans…sigh.  He’s so beautiful.

(my hubby used to have some model WWII airplanes, and he had a pilot model (aka DOLL) whose face was designed after David Beckham.  I was SO angry when he sold that doll…)

  • TheOriginalLulu

Woof. He’s gorgeous. I even forgive the tat sleeves, which I normally hate.

  • Srw27

I dunno, he’s cute & all (I could do without most of those tattoos) but he just doesn’t light my fire the way Daniel Craig does.  I mean, I wouldn’t kick him outta bed for eating crackers or anything and his abs are divine

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

oh meh.  doesn’t do it for me today.
