Cover Girl: Nicole Kidman for Harper’s Bazaar Australia

Posted on May 07, 2012

Nicole Kidman is serving up some INTENSE MOMMYSTARE REALNESS.

Nicole Kidman covers the June/July issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia magazine photographed by Will Davidson.

And she looks like she’s ready to fuck up that photographer if he takes one step closer to her child.

Which makes it a pretty arresting shot, actually.

The curls on that baby’s head just killed me dead. Seriously. SO much like my daughter’s hair. I love this photo.

  • charlotte

Warm coat for the mom, naked baby. Well played!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Didn’t even see that at first – just saw how gorgeous Nicole looked.  But of course you are right!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Laura-Hand/34501967 Laura Hand

Hahahaha I thought the exact same thing.

    • sagecreek

yeah, what a great example of momlove!

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I think the point is that the baby is actually wrapped up in her coat with her. But that’s pretty hard to see – her arm’s in the way.

      • calimon

Still, very much a naked baby.

    • birkatbaby

She’s wrapping the baby up in her coat!

    • Lina_bee

Given that they live in Tennessee, it was probably about 70F when they shot this.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The way it’s been going lately, it was probably more like 85-90 degrees.  It’s hot here in the MidSouth.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=567835404 Patti Lever

if it was taken in Sydney then it wasn’t cold either.

  • Spicytomato1

She looks like the Nicole of yore, natural and unfussy, albeit slightly evil with that stare. Adorable baby.

    • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

Ya she really does with the exception of her lips… It’s nice to see though. She looks great.

  • gsk241

I still fail to understand why she wasn’t cast to play Narcissa Malfoy.

    • Sobaika Mirza

I remember hearing Nicole’s bestie Naomi Watts was up for the role and thinking she’d be perfect.

      • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

Oh, that would have been great. I LOVE Naomi Watts. Such a great actress, and never quite got the career she deserved.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I agree, but after playing Mrs. Coulter in The Golden Compass, maybe she didn’t want to be typecast? (AS IF.)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UXQWW72ST3LHXVPD4TYD4FCZ2U Susan

It was my understanding that JK Rowling was fairly firm that all the actors had to be either British or true to the nationality that was written for them – i.e. the girl that was cast as Fleur really is French.  Therefore both Nicole and Naomi (as Aussies) could have only played characters that were written as being from Australia.

      • gsk241

Now that you mention it, I think you’re right about that.  When I read the books, though, it was Nicole I saw as Narcissa with her perfect ice-queen beauty.

      • SassieCassy

I think she meant that about the kids because at first they were looking for American actors to play Harry

Sorry, I’m a Harry Pothead full of useless information about the franchise XD

        • Stephanie Burgess

I’m a huge HP fan but didn’t know that! Interesting. I always did think it was cool that the nationalities of the  actors and the characters matched. Having an American put on a fake accent to play Harry could have gone bad really fast.

          • lizajane1776

As is obvious when an actor from one of the films (Goblet of Fire) put on an American accent for another film (Twil—I can’t even say it.)

          • HengRu

Unless they had hired Renee Zellweger to play Harry.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Although Naomi was born in the UK wasn’t she? So technically… But yeah, I was really happy that they emphasised that in the casting. Could so easily have become a clusterfuck like the Dark is Rising.

        • Beardslee

The Dark is Rising is one of my favorite books (and series) ever and just seeing the previews for that movie was enough to keep me out of the theater, it looked so bad.

      • H3ff

The girl who plays Luna Lovegood is Irish, though.

  • Super_Red

That’s possibly my favorite cover you’ve ever had on this blog. Great, great shot.

  • guestela

LOVE this photo. That baby looks so adorable, even with its back turned to the camera. Chubby, perfect skin against heavy black fabric. Makes my ovaries explode.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The best part of all?  They left her face the hell alone! No obvious Photoshop.  She even has some lines!

    • poggi

You are exactly right.  An appropriate use of Photoshop where, as Tina Fey argued,  you look “as if you were caught on your best day in the best light.”

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

And we don’t need to be snowed into believing that she’s younger than springtime. We all know better.  A few well earned lines are fitting and graceful.

    • Spicytomato1

Actually I thought they deployed sort of a reverse Photoshop…she looks more natural on this cover than she does in “real life” shots. It’s like they lessened the effects of some of her obvious work somehow.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Whatever they did, she looks naturally herself, which is laudable these days.

  • piecesofconfetti

    Beautiful.

  • Judy_J

Great photo.  She looks like a real person, not photoshopped to death.

  • greyhoundgirl

I agree with the “not photoshopped to death” comment.  When I saw this I thought–wait–is that a LINE on her face?  They let her look real?  How refreshing and beautiful!

  • SpcilK

Love it. Lioness with baby cub!

  • Ennovi_R

I think it is beautiful and I love how the baby is turning away from the camera!

  • mjude

    what a great photo

  • mjude

    what a great photo

  • theafternoonknows

This house is ours. This house is ours.

  • theafternoonknows

This house is ours. This house is ours.

  • Susan Crawford

It is SO good to see that Nicole is laying off the Botox a little. I detect MOVEMENT and even a LINE on her beautiful face. Please, Ms. Kidman, just ease off, and be the gorgeous woman you are, complete with a few crinkles. (And what an adorable little chunk of baby you have!)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

Nic is looking good here! Love the hair color, and the stare is REAL.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

Actually, I think her expression is due to the fact that her face has been frozen in about 3 ways.

    • AnaRoW

That’s how she always looked before botox. You can tell she stopped using because her eyebrows are back where they’re supposed to be.

  • schadenfreudelicious

how refreshing to see her face looking relatively natural as opposed to botoxed within an inch of it’s life…it’s a lovely photograph of mother and child

  • glennethph

    I thought Charlize at first

  • glennethph

    I thought Charlize at first

  • j_anson

That’s an awesome shot. Although, are they pulling that “motherhood is the greatest role a woman can play” crap with that headline? Maybe the look on her face is her reaction to that.

    • turtleemily

I’m more irked by the fact that it seems to be ignoring or forgetting the fact that Nicole and Tom Cruise have two adopted children.

      • AnaRoW

She also has another daughter with her current husband.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I agree.  The caption seems to imply that motherhood is a fairly new role for her, instead of one she has been doing for at least 15 years.  Although it may be her fault as much as the magazine’s–in interviews I’ve read, she seems to act like she’s in awe of everything like it’s the first time for her.  And you never see her with her older kids, they’re always with Tom and Katie.  Just odd.

  • j_anson

That’s an awesome shot. Although, are they pulling that “motherhood is the greatest role a woman can play” crap with that headline? Maybe the look on her face is her reaction to that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=22917995 Nicole Renee

I love fat baby elbows!! EEee.. Ok, ovaries in check now..

    • Anathema_Device

I know. Fat baby elbows are only second to fat baby thighs in my book. And I’m not usually one to get all freaky over babies.

      • Beardslee

        Yes, those elbows are delicious.

  • Anathema_Device

INTENSE MOMMYSTARE REALNESS! So, so true. I really love this shot. It feels “real.”  I was confused for a moment as to why a summer issue would be so wintery, then I remembered, “Duh, Australia.”

  • beebee10

    THAT is a great cover!

  • bluefish

Adorable baby.  Can almost smell the lovely baby smell from here.  So cute.

  • MilaXX

    Lifetime movie realness

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

I want to cuddle that beautiful baby!

  • marilyn

She does look pretty hostile for holding a baby.

    • alyce1213

I didn’t really get hostile.  Fierce.

  • eight_of_nine

She looks incredible, the best I can remember in ages!

  • http://www.facebook.com/susy.hammond Susy Varian Hammond

I’m just glad Nicole has her own lips back.

  • siriuslover

This picture is brilliant. She looks gorgeous, serious, and mommyish.

  • http://twitter.com/MarfMom Maya

i thought it was charlize theron for a moment. lovely shot though!

  • Markatha

She’s really looking great these days, Motherhood suits her.

  • http://twitter.com/marriedkuntz farts

    Amazing shot.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1313126032 Ajuna Ariel Fenty

My bb Nicole is baaack and I am so ecstatic. Nicole is an intensely electrifying actress when the role demands it and with meaty upcoming roles in movies like Hemingway and Gellborn, The Paperboy, The railway man and Grace of Monaco, she is going to MURDER THE TV SCREEN, ABSOLUTELY SHUT IT DOOOOWN!!!  I predict at least two Oscar nods in the next three years. Glad to see she scaled back on the botox too. Love ya Nicole.

  • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

Those are in no way close to her old lips, but she still looks great.

    • TieDye64

I know and it makes me a little sad, but at least they’re better than they were for a while. Beautiful shot.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/K3O2QNXDJIU3AJINAGNJRYWDZ4 mrspotts66

     stunning shot!

  • fursa_saida

This almost looks like a still from a horror movie, maybe from the late 90s. I love it.

  • GorgeousThings

That’s the best I’ve seen her look in years.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    That’s a beautiful photo. She’s really a gorgeous woman.

  • MoHub

THere’s a definite Mama Bear look on that cover.

  • guest2visits

    Lovely cover shot.

  • alyce1213

There’s just something about holding your baby in your arms that gives you good face.
    It’s quite evident here.

  • EEKstl

Gorgeous pic and Nicole looks stunning, but I’m kinda sick and tired of celebrities’ children as fashion accessory.  A paparazzi grabbing a pic of a celebrity and his/her kids is one thing, but when it’s a deliberate editorial decision it just smacks of beatific self-aggrandizement.
