Christina Hendricks In NYC

Posted on May 16, 2012

Hi Christina! You keep walking. You look like you have somewhere to be. We can follow along and judge you on the way.

Christina Hendricks out and about in NYC.

Yves Saint Laurent ‘Belle Du Jour’ Clutch

This is semi-cute, but it’s also one of those sum-is-worse-than-its-parts getups. We keep looking, and we can’t find any one piece here that’s truly bad, but we think the outfit as a whole looks a little … hootchie, no? Like she’s about to break out into a rousing rendition of “Hey, Big Spender,” right? Or is that just us? We think it’s the combination of leather skirt and peep-toes, plus that faux-fur-looking thing slung over her arm and the large necklace, which really doesn’t look right for day-wear.

But, hey; the blouse is really cute and the clutch is gorgeous. Also, everything fits and flatters. That’s not bad, all things considered. Baby steps, girl.

    • Sobaika

Hey, at least she’s dressing for her body shape.

      • giiiirrrr

Yep, the shape and the colors are great.  But dear god, satin, leather, *and* faux fur, Christina?  The Duchess would be horrified.

        • Candigirl1968

And, speaking from experience, you can’t go cheap looking when you’ve got the bigguns.  It just sends the floozy factor up by a factor of ten.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

I’d like the skirt in a completely different color. And I hate her lip color.

What’s the furry thing on her arm?

    • MilaXX

I can’t with this one. I like her, but she’s not making it easy. I like the skirt, shoes & bag. Hair and makeup look find. The top shows far too much boob, the choker only emphasizes that fact and the fur thing needs to be taken out back and burned.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

It’s hard when you have very big boobs to find a top that shows an acceptable amount of boob that also fits and doesn’t make them appear even larger. I agree she should have worn a different necklace

        • MilaXX

Being in the large boob club myself I understand that. Sadly, Christina almost always fails to get this one simple thing right. Adding the necklace doesn’t disguise the additional real estate shown, it actually draws more attention to it.

      • kcarb1025

She looked SO GOOD on their Actor’s Studio episode, and that just makes me even more irritated with her because she obviously *can* look smashing when off the set and out of costume, but she just refuses to try or to hire someone to style her (and I don’t just mean candids like this; she is a regular horror show on red carpets).

    • Ozski

I think she looks great and I love the shoes. However, she should ditch the necklace, looks kinda ticky-tacky.

    • http://twitter.com/MrsTRDavis Theresa

looks like a mauled muppet flung over her arm. Other than that, just a little vampire-esque for my taste but not “bad”

    • kingderella

not seeing the hootchie, like the look. not loving the furry thing on her arm.

    • SapphoPoet

Leather garments just never look that comfortable. But I’ve never had any, so perhaps I’m wrong.

      • Lisa_Cop

They’re not uncomfortable and leather is VERY warm. Great for cold winter days.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I love the necklace, but yeah, not for day-wear. I kept thinking that rubbish bag behind her was some sort of corsage.

      • 3rdsister

“that rubbish bag behind her was some sort of corsage”

I know, right?  When I first glanced at the photo, I thought it was some sort of hobo bag and I wondered why she was also carrying a clutch.   had to laugh . . .

        • makeityourself

I thought so too. It could have been one if those Chanel garbage bag purses that Karl foisted on the “it bag” crowd about five years ago. Then I saw that divine YSL envelope clutch and realized it was a real Hefty bag sitting behind her on the curb. Haha!

I know the whole getup is a bit off key, but she looks lovely to me.

          • Saoirse Lee

            She’s reviving “Derelicte”!

    • Miss_Led

Carrying the body of a dead Muppet over her arm. Unh-unh.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I’ve finally gotten ’round to watching Firefly

(I know, I know, what on earth took me so long? and me a huge Buffy fan and everything!)

And I must say that Ms Hendricks’ character ‘Saffron/Yolanda/whatever’ really kicks arse.  Fantastic stuff.

      • SapphoPoet

Wow–she does look like Saffron! Never noticed that. Congrats on finding out about Firefly–I loved that show. Did you watch Serenity, too?

        • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

          That’s because she *is* Saffron!

          • SapphoPoet

Oh, I didn’t realize that at all! I don’t watch Mad Men so I never made the connection. Did everyone else know this but me? (Never mind; don’t answer that…)

            • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Only the very smug people amongst us who, every time there was a “Wow, Christina Hendricks comes out of nowhere!” sort of story said “Oh please – I knew she was talented back in Firefly”. And you can ignore us when we are smug.

          • SapphoPoet

Oh, I didn’t realize that at all! I don’t watch Mad Men so I never made the connection. Did everyone else know this but me? (Never mind; don’t answer that…)

        • Eclectic Mayhem

I’ve got three episodes left to watch and then Serenity.  And then I’ll be sad because there is no more.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

The limited number of episodes is the only drawback to that show. It was so good.

    • NDC_IPCentral

It’s not that chilly here…. That faux fur stole is too much of a muchness.  I also think that the V-neck should close a bit higher, especially for daytime and given her gifts.  But she has beautiful skin, that’s undeniable.

    • Glammie

Almost there.  It’s fitted, which is good.  Too much cleavage, but it’s a tough thing for her–v-necks are flattering, but with her any depth at all means serious cleavage.

But it’s all in the right direction.

    • hughman

Something about the leather skirt and her red hair and that necklace and her impressively, blindingly white skin is all very “Mists of Lower East Side Avalon” to me. Not very current (granted, she got her name playing out of time) and kind of odd.

    • Violina23

I think we have to grade on a curve. She is wearing the RIGHT SIZE, people! I thinks he looks good, personally, unless that purse is hiding a bare midriff or something…

    • cluecat

Of all the things not right for day-wear, I would say it’s the five inches or so of cleavage!

      • LesYeuxHiboux

As a fellow amply-bosomed gal I have to feel for her on this issue. Often it’s a choice of too-much or none-at-all (as Tina Fey puts it “only two speeds, matronly or a little slutty”). Wrap tops are terrible for this because even though they are recommended for the hourglass-shape they quickly go from flattering to flashing with any movement.

        • cluecat

I’m a 32 DD myself, and believe me, I didn’t mean to imply she was dressing like a tart.  I firmly against the large boobs on display = slutty camp!

I just happen to think that some looks, such as plunging tops (even on the less chesty ladies), tightly fitted sheath dresses, very short skirts, etc., like certain fabrics, work better after 5.  A V-neck might have been better here.

I hear you about the wraps, too!

        • CozyCat

I agree about wrap tops/dresses:  I am sick of hearing about how “a wrap dress is flattering on everyone.”  It is NOT.

That said, I think the neckline here looks better than what she often wears.  She is showing cleavage, but she doesn’t look in danger of a wardrobe malfunction.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

There’s so much going on, for a few seconds there, I thought the black rubbish bag behind her was part of the look.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks pretty fabulous to me, but it is on the sexy side for daywear. She could have the leather OR the shiny top OR the big necklace, but not all three in the same daytime outfit. If she was headed for an interview on a show that airs at night, like Letterman or Craig Ferguson, this would be a great look.

    • sweetestsith

The pieces are great shapes for, very flattering on her body without being slutty or marmish, but the textures and details are all wrong.  Perhaps ditch the necklace and change the skirt fabric to a nice tweed or plaid or something?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

I think she is dead sexy in this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

Looks like a costume that would be fine once she’s on the set.

    • MissAnnieRN

I can’t hate in this because she is following my rule for her: just dress as Joan would in 2012. And for all the reasons you mentioned. Though I will say it’s a super nice day here in the northeast today, and it just doesn’t look seasonally appropriate. Although hhis prob wasn’t taken today. But still. It’s may. Put away the leather unless you’re going for a ride on your Harley.

    • butterflysunita

I think she looks great.  As for the outfit not being quite right for day wear, we don’t know where she’s going.  It gets dark pretty late in NYC these days–she could be going out for an early dinner or drinks.

    • ms_mouse

Forgetting the clothing for a minute, the woman is on the street, in a snapshot, with no special lighting and everyday makeup, and her face is absolutely gorgeous.

    • unpiously

Nothing wrong with a little well-deployed hoochieness. You go on and get some, Joanie.

    • fungstyle

subtract the fur and replace the necklace wiith something more clean and modern and i think this would be quite chic.

    • Anathema_Device

Pretty good, considering her past efforts. I like the outfit, but I’d ditch that necklace. And maybe a low cut, lace-trimmed cami under the blouse? She could still show enough chest to not look smothered up top, but not have everything so exposed as to look like the boobs are making a run for it.

      • terekirkland

Right? Does this woman own no camisoles? If you can’t find any you like, there’s always those lace-trimmed cami-dickeys. As seen on TV! ;)

        • Lisa_Cop

Oh no to the the cami. Just close one more button on the blouse.

    • TieDye64

The necklace for daytime? No bueno. The peep toes and the skinned muppet. Nope. Still, it’s gobs better than what we usually see her wear. Beautiful, just too OTT.

    • Kayceed

This is evening wear – the sum of it looks quite wrong in the bright light of day.

    • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

I like it. Maybe it is that trash bag behind her that is making you think hootchie. :|

    • l3icest3r

If only the top weren’t shiny and the necklace so big. Otherwise, not bad for her. She looks like she feels at ease in these clothes, so maybe she’ll start wearing more of the same.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=517890557 Willis Cramer Kliefoth

This could’ve been a really chic little outfit if it weren’t for really unfortunate over-accessorizing.

    • altalinda

      Agreed.  Tight skirt, plunging neckline.

    • BeeBeauNYC

It looks like she’s coming home from a nightclub or some kind of walk of shame.

    • MK03

Excuse the tangent, but I saw the clutch and had to share that I went to the YSL exhibit in Denver last night. SO FUCKING FAB.

    • AgingWell

I bet she grabbed the black rug when she realized it would help position her arm to display the clutch.

    • judith traherne

I think this is the best I’ve ever seen her look. That *face*! In broad daylight. She looks fantastic.

Skirt color? At first glance it looks mauve but I’m hoping it’s my monitor and that it’s really wine.

      • Vodeeodoe

It’s the color of the stain that wine makes when you spill it all over yourself dancing like no one is watching.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

we’re only seeing half of her but i’m so used to looking in the mirror & seeing pretty much the same thing, if both halves, that i’m pretty certain she has lost just a ton of weight over the last few months. & she’s wearing a good bra. & i like the necklace & the fake fur thing, i’m sure i’ve got multiple versions of both lying around somewhere amid my house & garage. the leather skirt, eh, i’ve seen too many. but this one looks good. she could use better shoes. but she looks good overall.

    • Susan Crawford

The blouse is great, and if the skirt were just a skosh bigger it would also be great. LOVELOVELOVE the YSL clutch. I get what she was going for with the necklace, but it didn’t quite make it. However, I think she looks good – the girl has a complexion to die for, and hair that is just superb. She truly is a beautiful woman.

Honey if that is hootchie, mommy is a hootchie lover.  It’s so nice to see her out of all of those Mad Men vintage torture girdles.

    • VanessaDK

A different blouse and the rest would work beautifully.

    • AutumnInNY

The outfit isn’t spectacular, but you’re right, she’s getting there. Otherwise she sure looks very pretty and much younger in this shot than I think I’ve ever seen her look in most photos. Her skin is luminous.

    • Patricia Gillett

This is such a huge step above her typical off-screen attire. Clothing fits well, her makeup looks good and the “girls” are supported well. Solid B+ in my book.

    • marilyn

Why do women with pasty, sickly colored skin contrast it with dark colors, and otherwise do nothing to make it more attractive?  Is this the Dark Shadows/vampire look?

      • Corsetmaker

Why describe pale skin as pasty and sickly? I get really fed up with comments like that about pale skin. The outcry there would rightly be if any other natural skin shade was described in such derogatory terms!
I love my pale skin, I keep it out of the sun to keep it that way and like the contrast against darker coloured clothes.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I don’t think that it IS fitted well. Look how loose the shoulder area is. Classic “large-busted-gal” problem. But Christina can afford a tailor!

Also, something about the big choker necklace reminds me of Chris March. You know, I’d bet he could design a flattering outfit for her. (But please skip the choker.)

    • cleep1000

The mauvey tones in the skirt and necklace are fighting her hair color, imo. I’d like to see some of that “mauveness” in her hair. It’s too brassy.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Other than showing a little too much cleavage for daytime, I think she looks pretty damn good.

    • beebee10

She is so incredibly beautiful and such a great actress that I loudly applaud  this look. I mean look at that face. Keep heading in the right direction CH!! Love you!!!

    • http://littlebrotherlives.tumblr.com LBrotherL

I think if she didn’t have this body type (specifically those boobs), you guys wouldn’t be saying that it looked a little hoochie.

    • Lina_bee

Different skirt and necklace and I’d be on board.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

She’s about to fall out of her shirt. But you are right about the sum and the parts. She certainly looks good that’s for damn sure.

      • 3boysful

I was thinking the shirt was the part that didn’t work!  The too-lowness is what’s bringing in the Hootchie-Mama.

    • Mirakel9

I think she looks great, except for the faux fur thing on her arm.

    • Jennifer Keenan Smith

I agree with Hughman on the Mists of Lower East Side Avalon (love that!  I was going with Renaissance Faire, myself).  In fairness on the faux fur thing, I think it might just be some kind of fringed shawl.  Still not good.  Love her anyway.

    • JMansm

Skirt is cute, I wonder what the faux fur thing is, don’t like the top or the shoes though.

    • j_anson

This is really awesome for her! I think she’d pretty much lose the hootchie-ness entirely if she just switched the necklace for something less southern gothicky. It’s fine in its place, but with peep-toes, leather, and marabou, it does read as somewhat bordello.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I don’t know if it’s all working but she looks really gorgeous.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

I don’t know if it’s all working but she looks really gorgeous.

    • CrazyFeminist

I think this is an example of how really thin women will wear something and everyone says it looks amazing but as soon as someone who actually eats three meals a day puts it on it offends the eyes of those who have become accustomed to looking at models. I think if this outfit was on Victoria Beckham people would be loving it.

    • Qitkat

She looks lovely and young here. On MM I always feel that she is styled and made up to look older and harsher than her own soft feminine features actually are.

    • guest2visits

She’s pretty here. But I think the combination of black satin, leather and furry-ness makes it look like a hot date night outfit
      from the 70s.

    • alyce1213

Such a pretty face, but you’re right:  “Hey, Big Spender”
This look is old-school call girl.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The necklace and the bath mat have to go.

    • librarygrrl64

This is the best she’s looked in a while. Work the hootchie, girl!

    • pookiesmom

      I think she looks fabulous!!

    • bailey debruynkops

baby steps for the baby heads.

    • formerlyAnon

I don’t know about hoochie – maybe more of an evening/club look than a day look. And I admit I think the v-neck could (should) meet an inch higher – that doesn’t look as much like intentionally calibrated cleavage as it does the neckline being pulled askew.

Overall I think she looks gorgeous.

    • Synfrique

I’m liking it overall, she’s looking really cute and youthful here, despite the leaning of the clothes.

    • PeaceBang

She has to make my personal Worst Dressed List. I get no sense of a personal style from her, just random clothes that she throws on. That necklace is an atrocious choice, and the satiny plungy top with the leather skirt… No, just no. Pair that fabulous skirt with something flattering and classic, not ShinyBooby. Out.

    • Bozhi

I think she looks great (okay, really good), but baby steps people.  She chose separates that flattered her.

Yes, the purse is gorgeous, but why on earth would anyone want to walk around being an uncompensated billboard for consumer goods?  (Cranky because no one wants to give me a YSL for my very own…)

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she is holding it like a small billboard…

    • fashionablylate

I think she looks gorgeous, and I LOVE that necklace!

    • Lisa_Cop

Room for improvement (lose the necklace and faux fur) but SO much better than usual, especially her awful RC looks.

    • It Hurt’s To Be In Love

THOSE BOOBS ARE MAGICAL! I BOW TO THEM.

    • Corsetmaker

I think she looks great. Everything does fits and flatter. Yes, I’d lose the necklace for daytime but the basic outfit is great. And she finally seems to be wearing a bra that fits her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

this reads as “modern day vampire” to me. in the dracula sense, not the twilight sense.

    • EEKstl

BIG SPENDER – HA HA HA HA HA…you two slay me.  Love the skirt.

    • Melissa Brogan

If she ditches the muppet on her arm and swaps the peep-toes for more classic pumps, I could get behind this outfit, even for daywear. As it is, her body says drinks after 5 and her face is saying office meeting.

    • bluefish

I dunno … I think she looks a lot better than I’ve seen her in evening wear lately.  The old Coco C tip — check yourself in the mirror and take one thing off.  I like the necklace but think she would’ve looked sharper without it.  I don’t mind the leather and the fur.  It’s NYC — She’s CH — It looks gray and chilly.  What a face and figure!

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

that blouse was made to compliment her beautiful boobage.  she looks lovely, if a little overdressed.  but then, we don’t know where she’s going.  if she’s meeting her lover for a hotel quickie then it’s perfect.  interesting that the purse is named “belle du jour”.

is it just my monitor, or did someone airbrush the cleavage out of that first shot.

    • OhSayNow

I think she borrowed that fur thing from Jon Snow.

    • http://www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/lastbutnotleast janinedm

I think the necklace is the culprit. It makes perfect sense to me (I too was a goth in the 90s), but it really drags the whole thing down. I find myself often talking myself down from necklaces like this and goofball chandelier earrings because, regardless of how attractive the pieces are to me, this is what they do to an outfit.

    • jennifervney

Everything fits and her boobs aren’t pushed up to her chin. Baby steps.

    • Laylalola

I think she’s actually trying to look professional. But the six inches of cleavage and boa feathers and leather kind of go against that.

    • http://twitter.com/idlebat J G

It’s a hippie/50s aesthetic hybrid, which is weird and clashy, though both are good looks for her – I think the hippie necklace is great for daylight and great with her face, as is the natural makeup and hair. It’s just a weird combination, especially with that icky colored skirt.

    • kikisayshi

Love the skirt and the necklace. It all suits her. Maybe she could’ve put the “girls” back in a bit to tone the whole look down.

    • ErmengardeGreen

She tends toward this bordello-y aesthetic when making her own choices, which I don’t like personally and which can make her look blowsy. That necklace is terrible with this look. Get rid of that and the jacket/shrug/fringey Stevey Nicks garment of boho mistakenness, and then swap the blouse for snug-fitting, minimally cleavage-y cashmere top in black or maybe a similar burgundy to the skirt and we’re in business. But even just getting rid of the necklace would help a huge amount.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/JO2ZPMWZR7BENRHIQ7DYGJP2HQ Melanie

Hush!  She looks SO much better than she usually does when she dresses herself!  Give her some positive reinforcement!

I think I disagree. That’s the best I’ve ever seen her look.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

It’s too warm for a leather skirt in NYC.  And the fur?  What for?  I was there yesterday.  No need for fur.  Anywhere.  Anytime.  At. All.
