Cannes WERQ: Jada Pinkett-Smith in Alberta Ferretti

Posted on May 21, 2012

After getting in touch with her inner Grace Jones, Miss Jada turned to the softer side of things.

Jada Pinkett-Smith attends the “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted Photocall” at Cannes in an Alberta Ferretti gown. Cuff bracelet by Adeler.

Alberta Ferretti Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Magdalena Langrova

And we’ve gotta say, girl NAILED it. We honestly didn’t think she had it in her to look this soft. That’s a fantastic color on her, the hair and makeup look great (although a slightly stronger lip would’ve been nice) and that cuff makes the perfect punctuation for the look. You WERQ that French Riviera chic shit, girl!

I mostly agree – I am just not sure I loved the dropped waist on her.  But she really does look fantastic.

    • Agree! I think the drop waist is a little low for such a petite lady. But she looks so much more relaxed now!

    •  I think it actually makes her look taller.

    • fursa_saida

I’m good with the dropped waist; I have issues around the boobs. (Her boobs, I mean. Mine are fine.)

    • SojournerYouth

Yeah, the dropped waist is a bit distracting–my eye keeps going to it because that band is darker.  But the color is killa and I have never seen her look so young, fresh, and soft, so the net effect is positive.  I hope she does this more often, because even though she can do edgy, she sometimes shouldn’t, since she is a kind of hard and severe looking woman on her own (I hope this doesn’t sound too harsh, but I have always felt she could easily kick my ass if we had a dark alley meet up).

    • It obliterates her waist and hips.  I can’t get behind it. Her figure looks completely flat.

  • Pannyx

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

she gets a WERQ just for wearing a full lining.  seriously starlets, how difficult can that be?

    • makeityourself

This is the right way to do sheer, especially n a soft, floaty, beachy-kind-of Cannes way. I’m so tired of the illusion-netting jigsaw puzzle no-underwear atrocities we have seen over the last year.

Also, is this teal/turquoise coming on strong or what? Cathy Cambridge wore two dresses near this color in the last week alone. It looks new again.

      •  Yeah for undergarments/lining!

      • Flooby

Turquoise is pantone’s color of the year right?

        • Melissa Brogan

           It’s tangerine this year.

  • Who knew?  She looks possibly even approachable. I mean, without getting your face ripped off, I mean. Good Show Jada!

    • MilaXX

I’ve liked her since Different World days. She’s always been this tiny, kinda tough chick. Saw her once on the street in NYC after she had had the first kid, pushing the stroller like it was an armed weapon.

  • sagecreek

Softer is better, honey, you look GRAND.

  • I’m not really digging the seaming on the dress. But she looks so pretty that I’m not going to quibble about it.

    • I agree–she looks GORGE, but the visible seaming is … cheap looking?

      • 3boysful

Exactly.  Combined with the gauzy fabric, it makes the dress look kinda like a beach cover-up.  But I guess where else could you wear it if not Cannes?

  • Caaro3

    Pretty dress.  Pickle face.

    • sisterb67

Pickle face, indeed!  She has a beautiful smile and her teeth are gorge too, I don’t understand why she doesn’t flash those pearly whites more.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Brava, Jada.

  • I’m surprised this is a WERQ. The dress looks sloppy. Like a dress falling off the hanger, the asymmetrical sleeves, puckered seams and poor fit add to the overall disheveled-ness of the dress.  I love the color and her hair/makeup but this dress looks like a mess.

    • giiiirrrr

Totally.  Jada can do 1000% better than this.  Fire that stylist stat.

    • EveEve

She looks about as good as I’ve seen her in recent years. What a lovely fabric and color on her.  But that tiny peek of lining at her cleavage is setting my teeth on edge.  Overall, the dress, as soft and feminine as it is,  could have used some more editing – particularly the asymmetrical shoulders, and hem length.

    • kcarb1025

      it looks like a nightie!

      • DCSheehan

I’ll second that. My mum had one just like it back in the 1970s. But she never would have left the house in it. And her cheekbones didn’t stick out like that.

    • Aly Light

I think it fits her hips all wrong– makes her look all broad shoulders, narrowing to a moderate waist and skinny hips. I would never have thought this deserved a WERQ.

    •  She’s about a foot shorter than the model, so the gown shifted accordingly. Too bad.

  • Lina_bee

  • marilyn

The color is good for her.  The dress is fine.  What I am interested in is what is wrong with her.  I prefer to believe that she is very sad about something, because she looks very wooden, withdrawn and unhappy.  Her smile is too contrived.  I feel for her.

    • joything

We’re on the same wavelength.  She does not look happy.  For a moment I wondered if some kind of cheek-tuck work had given her that expression, but maybe she’s just gritting her teeth and getting through this.

    • BradWatson

Called it. She has every outward reason to be beaming… but she’s not. And not even in that KStew, Ick-wearing-Prada-on-the-Riviera-is-such-a-drag sorta way.  She knows the drill – but she’s totally somewhere else.

  • MilaXX

So glad you guys like this, cause I love it. The hair is so much better and the color is indeed great on her. That last picture even looks like a smile is creeping in.

  • kckris

i think she looks great, but why didn’t someone tell her to fix her right shoulder?

  • sarah jacobs

And bless her for wearing a slip under the sheer dress.

  • SpcilK

Lovely! She is moving toward the light. I knew you had it in you.. This is the best she has looked in awhile.

  • MightyMarshal

I hate her, but when she goes softer and less FIERCEFASHIONFUCKYOU I hater her less. Bitch still needs to take a breath. She looks like she has shart that she doesn’t trust that she’s trying to contain about 95% of the time.

    • SojournerYouth

I feel terrible for loving your comment, but I will just have to bear it.  I have irrationally hated this woman for a long time; I’m now in recovery 🙂

  • Nonnah

Hmmmmm …… she looks great.  But I don’t know about that dress.

  • That dress is fugly. Looks like she’s wearing the drapes from her hotel windows

  • lamamu

Fab dress, but it doesn’t fit her, not even in a casual chic way. From the neck down, she looks like a little girl playing dress-up in her sophisticated mother’s dress. Also, she needs dresses that cinch at the waist.

  • Two serious questions here. 1) Do designer really only produce one model-sized sample of a dress and then expect actresses to squeeze into it whatever their size or shape? 2) If you were a very petite very successful actress married to Will Smith with a gazillion dollars in the bank, wouldn’t you spend a few thou on BUYING a dress that actually fitted rather than just accepting the ill-fitting free crap that got thrown your way?

The dress looks so pretty on the model, and would have looked stunning on Jada if it were the same tea length and and tailored to fit. As it is, it just looks droopy and shapeless, and to my mind makes both the actress and the design house look bad. Also did she deliberately knot up one of the shoulders like that?

  • suzq

I believe aqua looks good on everyone.  Why don’t more people wear it?  It’s a lovely dress and Jada wears it better than the model.

  • MilaXX

I have to give a slow clap to T & Lo. Between  the regular postings and the whiteboard their fingers must be tired. They are on fire today!

  • enchanted216

    Lovely.  She looks beautiful.

  • Imasewsure

Gotta agree with Linds and go against my uncles here… The fit is bizarre on her but really pretty on the model (plus the length looks right)… color is nice, bracelet nice but OUT for me overall

  • Anathema_Device

She does look really pretty. Great color dress, hair, and makeup. I don’t totally dig that dress. A little too fussy for that fabric.

  • Killer!

  • BobStPaul

Sorry, but that’s one ugly, ill-fitting dress – although the color is nice.  Her hair and make-up look great. Frankly, I felt her Versace look in the Whiteboard pics was much more deserving of a WERQ than this one.

  • Carlodog

I wish the shoulders were the same.  One shoulder knotted up and the other left loose, why?  Just to be wacky?

  • stunning.

  • I like everything, the color is fantastic on her … but girl needs to eat.

  • bluefish

Finally!  I agree — Lovely dress that suits her, great color — Hair looks a lot better and the rigor mortis look is gone.  A great dress and perfect for the occasion.

  • Sara__B

I like this softer, more relaxed look (even if the dress is much too long for her), but her mouth and cheeks are stiff and tight as ever. Give her another week in Cannes, and maybe she’ll relax her face as well.

  • Twinzilla

Not feeling it.  She looks thick-waisted.

  • I just can’t get over how PRETTY she looks. Not that I ever thought she was not-pretty, exactly, but it doesn’t really seem to be the look she goes for. Which is fine. But she should consider going to this well more often (the hair and makeup, especially), because she looks kind of amazing.

  • joe_tey83

I don’t know. The color’s great, but it looks so limp and sloppy with the seams and folds and crinkling.

  • formerlyAnon

WERQ!  Thank god. I was beginning to think that the idea that she was attractive, ever, must have been a mass hallucination caused by chemical warfare.

  • So much better than the Atelier Versace. So much better. Go forward into the softness Jada.

  • Kayceed

Beautiful color, terrible dress – ill-fitting, ill-conceived, unflattering.

  • fiestyfashionfem

NOOOOOOO!  Ugh.  Sheer dresses are the devil’s spawn and are here to pull us toward hell.  She’s pretty and all, but STEP AWAY FROM THE SHEER DRESSES!  whew.  sorry.  emotional. can’t. stand. it. anymore.

  • another_laura

I can’t say that I love this dress, but she wears it well and I am dying over that cuff.

  • guestela

She looks so beautiful! And comfortable, too.

  • Nice color on her. The hips don’t look quite right. Her waist has disappeared.

  • jilly_d

    the COLOR! GASP!

  • Terence Ng

No to the dropped waist. It makes her look like a Wrigley’s stick of doublemint gum.

  • unbornfawn

Now if we could just get her to soften her facial expression….

  • NurseEllen

The color is fabulous on her, and she looks more relaxed and yes, softer,  than she has in other photos of late, but the dress is not flattering.  I am so over sheers with liners (just as TLo are over lace), I loathe big fat highly visible seams, and while the cuff is admittedly gasp-worthy I think she needed a small little necklace just at the base of her throat.  I would say, as others have, that the dress makes it look as if she has a thick waist, but one look at her cheekbones dispels any of those thoughts…..they are sharp!

  • filmcricket

Agreed on colour, hair, make-up and cuff. Just don’t really care for the dress itself.

  • LambeeBaby

I think she looks beautiful. The dress is great, the color is good and it is perfect for her skin tone. Well done Jada

  • AWS

The lower waist thingy looks like it’s shielding her naughty bits.  Other than that, brava…

  • Susan Crawford

Yes! I would not be afraid to smile at her, and in this lovely dress, she deserves a smile. Normally, I would be a bit afraid to make eye contact, lest she shoot death rays at me. And of all the sheer dresses I’ve seen lately, this has to be one of the best. LOVE Ferretti!

  • Sharyn Glowatz

Color is beautiful on her but the drop waist is not hitting in the right spot.

  • guest2visits

I think the criss cross seams create a patchy look that ruins the line of the dress for me. I like the color for her; and her
styling, – she’s almost smiling!  But the fabric looks stretched and droopy, and patched in an unattractive way.

  • Yup. LOVE the color

  • Marian Humin

  • patticake1601

The hem is so long that it is wet and is catching on the cement sidewalk. It also looks flimsy and cheap and I detest her fake nails.

  • Looks as mean and hateful as she always does.

  • hate

  • GTrain

She looks really great. Beautiful dress!

  • MzzPants

Skinny bitch.   The softer hair really is flattering and what an amazing switch in looks!

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Sorry guys, this look doesn’t deserve a “WERQ”.  That hip panel in the dress is wrong and cut her up in an unflattering way.  Not a fan of the hair either.

  • Zippypie

No WERQ here.  The color is fabulous but the dress looks huge on the shoulders and that hip panel is so incredibly unflattering – she just doesn’t have what it takes to make this look a WERQ.  And she’s still making bitchface.  Nah.  Better than the other looks she’s been trotting out, but not a WERQ.

  • Hetha Innis

For once, I can’t say I agree with T-Lo Rules The World Int. I agree on the hair/make-up and color of the gown, but she’s too short, straight through the torso, and buff to do the dress justice. It needs a long, willowy, and curvy Rosie Huntington-Whiteley type to do it justice.

  • pleases, smile.  you look so much prettier when you do.

  • poggi

She looks so pretty and at ease. While i wouldn’t think i would like thecdropped waist, I really like this on her.

  • The dress is great in theory, but that was the WRONG chiffon to use. Sewing errors EVERYWHERE.

  • The sleeves are my making my eyes twitch! Bipolar dresses don’t make for WERQs. Right?

  • sweet_potato

I just can’t get behind this one.  I can’t look at that dress without wanting to take it apart and redo it. ugh.

  • Michelle Newell

I don’t think the dress is quite the right shape for her, but the color is amazing on her. And her hair and makeup are gorgeous. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her look so pretty.

  • TieDye64

I completely agree with you guys. A total WERQ. A stronger lip color would make this about perfect in my eyes. Very pretty.

  • RzYoung

Ewe! I hate this! The colour is delish but it’s totally the wrong size/fit/style for her. Styling is lovely but i’m not digging the dropped waist.

  • No, it’s not ‘werq’ because she is overdressed for a photocall. If the dress were shorter (as on the runway) it would have been closer to a werq. So no. She still looks likes she can kill Arnold with a leg lock.

  • jw_ny

I’m not lovin this like so many others are.  I guess I prefer her edgier look…this makes her look quite mature. Shorter length may have been better considering the venue.  I really dislike that she made the sleeves  asymmetrical …why she rolled up the right one?  (got a pack of ‘mokes stashed up in there?)  Agree that a bolder lip, or perhaps bolder eye, would have helped…she’s looking quite pale and gaunt.

  • Melvis Velour

I’m probably in the minority but that’s an ugly dress that looks poorly made.

  • StelledelMare

Love the color indeed but I don’t think the dress itself fits for her at all. It’s that opaque part and the lines around the bustline that kill it.

  • I think she finally looks soft, age appropriate and down right gorgeous.  It is the color of the dress that works, not the actual dress. Because the dress looks cheap and it’s not made for her petite frame regardless.

  • Jessica O’Connell

She should ALWAYS do her hair that way! Looks incredible and it’s nice to see her looking softer for once!

  • Who knew she could look so soft? I love the hair!! Totally a WERQ moment for her.

  • ballerinawithagun

If they would have eliminated the diagonal seams, this dress would be perfect. Silk chiffon bias seams are always going to stretch and pucker no matter how perfectly made.
Great color and hooray for the lining!

  • I’m surprised you love this – this does weird things for her body, particularly the dropped waist

  • I think it makes her look too skinny (yeah, that can be a bad thing).

  • mjude

agree TLO, she nailed it.  finally a soft look from her.

  • Judy_J

Sorry, I’m not feeling the love here.  I don’t like the dress, and it’s doing weird things to her figure.

  • Lisa Dugan

Soft and lovely.  I think that band around her hips is a little odd but that’s the dress, not her.

  • Judy_S

Don’t like the tucked-up shoulder (unless she has a particularly significant tattoo to show off) but otherwise I agree. She looks great and it is not an easy dress to look great in.

  • belfebe

I loved it, except that I think she’s wearing the wrong bra.

  • regina arthur

She looks really pretty, love the color.  What is up with you guys wanting everyone to ‘cheese’ on red carpets?  Who wants to look like a cheshire cat all the damn time?  Sometimes you don’t feel like smiling, so why fake it?

  • Marissa Wiley

I hate that dress on her.  The color is the only good part.

  • janetjb

She does look soft and beautiful.

  • butter nut

omg no.  i totally disagree.  i think she looks a mess.  it’s too big, not tailored to fit her body & that weird band across her cooter is giving me the eye twitch.  so OUT.

  • I never would have expected this to work, but she looks beautiful and more importantly, it’s a really fresh look that I haven’t seen 50,000 times already. My only hangups are the odd seems and proportions around the bodice which makes her breasts look…not great.

  • Are we blind to the LadyParts Modesty Band? WTF is up with that thing?

  • Kate4queen

Love the color on her but I wish she’d just unclench those lips a fraction and really smile!

  • EEKstl

I love the color but that is a tough dress to pull off – the model’s barely doing it.

  • Tatiana Luján

¿Werq? The fit is just weird.

  • Tatiana Luján

I think with the model you could guess she had curves beneath the dress because the lining fits her body, not the dress. Since Jada fitted the lining to the dress instead of the body, all you see is a squared waist.

  • Pennymac

Poor dear, it looks like her her internal dialogue is “Don’t clench, breathe out, SOFTEN THE EYES!! don’t clench, breathe out….”

The dress is different for her, but rates a meh from me.

  • piecesofconfetti

Why is she doing that with her mouth?

  • cmb92191

I want that dress!   Hey, I’ll fight her for it.. although it would have to be altered to an inch of its life to even fit on me.

  • Melissa Brogan

I’m not totally in love with the dress, but damn. Something floaty, with softer hair, she doesn’t look like she’s about to kill anyone for once.

  • This dress looks sloppy as shit, both in seaming/construction and silhouette.  Bad choice for a WERQ.

  • Negien Mirzai

i disagree. the drop waist looks awful on her. what woman wants to look like an upside down triangle?

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Lovely.  The color looks beautiful on her, and the soft hair is just right.  The cuff is GORGEOUS!

  • samo_samo

It’s nice to see her softer, gentler side. Her hair is very pretty.

  • lilazander

Wos, she can look respectable… What a surprise.

  • I’m not loving the dress, but the hair looks fabulous. I like it when it’s not so severe. Makeup and accessories are good, and the color of the dress is great, I just don’t like the dress itself.

  • The proportions here are just slightly off: the bodice makes her shoulders and ribs look wider, but the drop-waist shows how narrow her hips are, plus the seaming seems a little ragged. But I’ll say, that color looks gorgeous on her, and the cuff is perfect.

  • Daenyx

I think she looks great, but I liked the orange Versace number on the Whiteboard better.  Her standard look is I WILL KILL YOU WITH MY EYES for a reason – it works for her.  There’s enough softness on any given red carpet, anyway.

  • Sophie Collier

The cut’s not working on Miss Tiny Body at all.  The dark part should be sitting across her hips, just below the waist, not drooping down that far.  I think it’s a size too big, is all.  But agree with you on the softness and color.  Very nice.  Just not quite a WERQ.

  • I love this so much.

  • Arellys Victor Garro

    awfulhanging boobs
distracting unsheer panel at the hips

    but the head looks pretty

  • Beth G

It’s gotta be inner soft side, cause her outter side doesn’t have anything that looks “soft”.

  • ccm800

lovely  but honestly I think she looks somewhat jaundiced

  • LinXGUA

The dress looks great in the model. But it doesn’t looks so good in Jada. In fact, it looks awful in Jada, like she fell in a pool and the dress grew. I don’t know, it’s the color of the bodice and the fit that kills it for me. Great color though.
