Cannes WERQ: Fan Bingbing in Chris Bu Kewen

Posted on May 17, 2012

Every single damn thing about this look is so fabulous that you may go into fierce overload if you look at these pictures for too long. We suggest focusing on one item at a time; first, the stunning dress; then, the amazing jewelry and bag; and finally, the hair, which is so nuclear-grade fabulous we suggest working your way up to that one.

Remember: Breath, and pace yourself.

Chinese actress Fan Bing Bing attends the Opening Ceremony and screening of ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ at Cannes in a Chris Bu Kewen gown paired with watch, white gold rings and earrings by Chopard. Clutch by Elie Saab.

Bow the fuck down, puny mortals.

      Beautiful!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12801074 Brett Hulst

      she wins.

      • Jill_3

She wins at hair, she wins at dress, and she wins at name (FAN BINGBING!!!!) Basically, I want to be her when I grow up.

        • JosephLamour

I keep saying Fan BingBing out loud cause frankly, its the best.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Oh my god, I’m so glad I’m not the only one doing that! Fan BingBing!

          • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Helen

you guys make me laugh.  but you have good reasons to keep saying BingBing out  loud –it is the “coolest name”.   BingBing Means Icy Ice in Chinese , I guess  her surname  “Fan”  helps to catch fans…  lol

        • kimmeister

That’s the command she will give to all of her minions when she’s feeling hot.

    • Kate4queen

      Perfect!

    • kirkyo

      oh. my. gosh. seriously.

    • poggi

I love the dress, and bag, and earrings, and makeup and hair.   She looks amazing!

    • Susan Crawford

Wow. Just . . . wow. Perfection. Wow.

    • JasmineAM

I have no idea who she is, but I hope to see more! WERQ that Chinese vase shit, gurl!

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

Not a fan of the hair, but she is always so beautiful and fashion-forward that I’ll allow it. Stunning!

      • blogless

Yes, I agree. I think the reason the hair bothers me is that it’s reddish color that I desperately try to get out of my hair when I dye it. I think it would have been better black.

But that dress and clutch are to die for. Seriously.

        • Lingus

I think her hair is black; In every movie I’ve seen her in, she has that super black hair and that super pale skin, like the flawless ice princess that she is. I think that the color we’re seeing is the red carpet reflecting off her shiny shiny hair?

          • blogless

I don’t think so. It has that brassy look when women with really dark hair try to go lighter. Her hair should be reflecting almost blue, and here you can still see her dark roots. I know it’s being really picky pointing that out but I guess if you have jet black hair it gets boring and you want to try something different. Brunettes just don’t have the playing with new color possibilities that blondes have.

    • chelwi

Wow! Took me a minute to wrap my mind around the hair. LOVE.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Just when I think I’ve got TLo figured out, they go and surprise me. I expected Miss Bingbing to get slammed because she fashioned her hairstyle like the figures in the dress. And what about the green clutch? A perfect match. This entire look is an extreme example of theme dressing and matchy-matchy, but they praise her. Go figure.

But I’m glad they like it, because I think it’s fabulous.

        • Lisa_Cop

          Also matching green nail polish.

          • Renaissance_Man_ATL

The polish is dark blue.  And fabulous!

    • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

I want to hang her on my wall…

    • sassyglasses

      LOVE.

And to be honest, also love that she is up there representing the Chinese.

    • mrssage

      and her make-up is fabulous.

      • kimmeister

Now THAT is the way to get mega lashes without looking spidery!

        • dress_up_doll

I know. I’d kill for those lashes. I’m getting old so mine aren’t as plentiful as they used to be. I also dig those eyebrows. Simply divine.

          • Ogden1990

And the eyebrows…so beautifully natural…love them

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

If she and Tilda ever took a photograph together I think they could make a camera melt.

    • colleenjanel

That dress is truly AMAZING! And her skin is unreal! Flawless!

    • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

Stunning in a way that makes everything declared stunning before this point look shabby.

      • mountainFashionista

This is one of the few WERQs that I’ve agreed with in a long time.  Yay!

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

Beautiful! I LOVE prints like this, and she wears it so well. Also- again with the magical green earrings! I admired Charlize in the drop crystal green earrings yesterday. I sense an emerging theme (at least for my own evolving tastes)– go green sparkling jewelry!

    • allisankelly

      SO gorgeous. Perfect 10.

    • Christina Brennan

Love the dress and accessories, but not loving the hair.  I’m assuming that the side bang extension thingies are supposed to look like her hair?  If that’s the case, the extensions don’t match the color of the rest of her hair.  For some reason that really bothers me.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QUMPWEPLYO4QF7XDJA3AYH3FNY Michelle L

It’s supposed to be a nod to hair from the Tang Dynasty – the entire look is actually. The dress and its embroidery, the jade accessories, the make-up.

I’m not sure if there really is a color discrepancy or if it’s just light… You can tell by the texture it’s not her own hair, though.

    • lilibetp

      Perfection.

    • Joyce VG

Goddess on Earth.  It’s like looking into the sun!

    • RebeccaKW

That fabric is beautiful.  I want a dress, bed linens, my couch, and a room wallpapered with it.

      She is stunning.

    • http://roughmenstandready.wordpress.com/ Dejah Thoris

      geisha-fabulous!

      • Patti Lever

Geisha’s are Japanese, this lady is Chinese.

        • http://roughmenstandready.wordpress.com/ Dejah Thoris

Yeah, I know…but the fake hair, and elaborate design of the dress reminds me of geisha with their tassels hanging down on the sides of their faces.

          • lulu880825

The culture of the whole east Asia comes from China. Japanese learn from China in Tang Dynasty, and they keep the Tang style to today. So you think its Janapese style, but Bingbing’s look is actually a typical Tang Style, a Chinese style.

            • http://roughmenstandready.wordpress.com/ Dejah Thoris

That explains a lot. I’ve seen photos of art that I would often be confused about it’s origin, because of the similarities. Now I shall go look up the Tang Dynasty, and learn about that period. Thanks for the clarification :)

    • SpcilK

Supreme Godess! What’s with the 5 o’clock shadow under her arm.

      • alyce1213

Funny, it’s not under her left arm, so I guess it’s not a shave she needs.  Maybe a bit of dark lint migrated to the right.
        But she looks to-die-for nonetheless.

    • BerlinerNYC

I suspect she is a robot designed by aliens to mesmerize us until she explodes.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

      Wow!!!  THIS is it!

    • kimmeister

That’s not actually her hair hanging down on the sides, right?  They look like sparkly black tassels.  While I don’t like the hair and want to clean up her brows, everything else is to die for. I’m sure her shoes were amazing as well, even though we can’t see them.

      • Sobaika

Yeah… her makeup is perfect until you notice her eyebrows need some plucking.

    • Anathema_Device

I am a total whore for ornate embroidery. Fan Bing Bing: I am your bitch. Shit, even her name is great.

I love this look. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t care for the hair, but she’s is bringing over-the-top, editorial-grade fierceness to life.

Thank you so much for this shot of fabulosity, T Lo. I have been mired in the dullest project ever this week.

    • Richard Harper

Girlfriend shut it down.  Everybody else weep.

    • mjude

      absolutely stunning.

    • SewingSiren

In honor of Miss Bingbing  (great actressy name too , by the way) I shall do the Texas Dip, in which you curtsy so low that your nose touches the floor.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

      That dress makes me weak.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

You forgot to mention the makeup, which is so beautiful it makes my heart hurt.

    • Lina_bee

Perfection! She’s always beautiful, but this outfit & styling are absolutely stellar. Stylist WIN!!

    • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

I actually fell out of my chair when I saw this.

      • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

And seriously could those earrings work any better with that gown and that hair? I am gasping for breath.

    • l3icest3r

I’ve never heard of this actress, but she is killing it up there! Even her nail polish is the perfect color.

But the hair, nooooo … the hair not so much.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Holy suffering shit! She is red carpet perfection in the flesh. And that gown is ah may zing!

    • kelsita421

      So stunning, I can’t even.

    • aimee_parrott

I finally know what the word ‘breathtaking’ really means, because this seriously made me lightheaded.  Absolute perfection.

    • MoHub

On a scale of 1 to 10, she gets a 12. She looks like a beautiful porcelain figuring come to life. I want to put her on my mantel, and I don’t even have a fireplace!

    • Le_Sigh

What a truly fabulous red carpet spectacle she is!  I suddenly want her and Tilda Swinton to do a movie together to watch them battle it out on the red carpet.

    • BrooklynBomber

      Oh, damn. DAMN!

    • BarbaraNovak

Saw just a quick glimpse of this in the background of ET or someone’s coverage last night and I kept screaming at my TV to show me this fabulous creature NOW!  Thank you for this!

    • joe_tey83

      She looks spectacular.

Although I can’t shake off my image of her playing a supporting role as a mousy faithful servant girl many years ago in (the hugely popular) My Fair Princess. It’s really so very funny to look at her now that she’s on the A-list and whatever. I just want to yell out her character’s name and laughed hysterically.

    • alyce1213

      Drop dead gorgeous.  Perfect.

    • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

      She looks stunning!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=719457376 Molly Adrianson

Goddess. Absolutely ageless, as beautiful now as she would have been 100,000 years ago and will still be 100,000 years from now. Goddess!!

    • http://twitter.com/FripsandFobs Andrew Schroeder

      That is… otherworldly.

    • Yaara

      Someone saw The Avengers… :D

    • AuntieAnonny

      Flawless.

    • Rand Ortega

      OOOOOOhhhh…

    • bluefish

NOW we’re talking!  Exquisite from head to toe.

    • Sara__B

      Extraordinary.

If this isn’t one of the top five looks from Cannes 2012, then Cannes 2012 will be the most amazing ever.

    • Judy_S

She justifies the whole concept and practice of the red carpet.

    • howdoilook

My jaw DROPPED when I scrolled and saw the full fierceness of that dress. BRAVA.

    • giiiirrrr

Really?  I hate the hair.  It’s too literal China doll/Geisha, as is the makeup, particularly the foundation.  And the dress is awfully bottom heavy for someone so slender.  I admit that it’s striking as hell, but only WERQ worthy due to the considerable drama.

      • librarygrrl64

“Really?  I hate the hair.  It’s too literal China doll/Geisha”

I agree. It makes the whole look costumey, or like a themed fashion editorial. But that is my only (minor) quibble. The dress, the clutch, the jewels, TO DIE FOR!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

If you see other pictures of her, she’s not slender at all.  not “bottom-heavy” per say, but definitely pear-shaped and heavy compared to most Asian and even non-Asian actresses.
And the foundation/skin color is a fairly well-used tone in Asia, and her natural coloring is actually really fair as well.

        • giiiirrrr

Ah, I was trying to say that her chest is, or appears, small relative to the heaviness of the lower half of the dress, creating a less well-proportioned silhouette.  As far as I can tell, her natural skin tone is very light, but with more of an olive cast than the true white of this foundation.  To my Western eyes (as it were!), it looks a little cartoon-y.  She’s a stunning woman, but I think she could skip some of the more standard elements in this outfit and look even better.  But I’m clearly in the minority here!  :)

        • rawrgrowlrawr

How can you say “she’s not slender at all.” Having hips does not negate a slender figure.

    • butterflysunita

Oh my God.  Everyone else at Cannes can just go home now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Apparently we need more Fan Bing Bing in our lives.  Bravo darling!

    • PaperPusher2

I can’t help but remember when Victoria Beckham wore that Ming vase-like Cavalli dress and have to say I liked Cavalli’s dress better.

    • P M

I didn’t listen when TLo spoketh. Now my brain has exploded.

      TOO. MUCH. FABULOSITY.

      WOOOOOW!!!

    • http://twitter.com/LoveTeachPray Jennifer Swegler

T-Lo!  Did you know the background on this dress and her hair?  The embroidery is about the four beauties of ancient China, and her hair is styled to be that of the Tang dynasty.

And I am so glad y’all love it!  I was afraid y’all might not.  I love this look!

    • prettybigkitty

      Flawless.

    • TonyGo

Obviously in the tiny minority here, but I’m not sold on this.  The overall effect is costumey.  I think I’d be good with either Chinese artwork on the dress OR the lantern-tassel ‘do, but not both.   Maybe I’m just cranky today.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Fan BingBing and her stylist just knocked it out of the park.  Such a gorgeous gown, accessorized to perfection. Sigh.

    • golspie

How old is it? Does it eat human food?

    • golspie

How old is it? Does it eat human food?

    • VeryClaire

Really? Dressed up like a little Madame Alexander doll?

    • MilaXX

Now this is the type of fierceness ewe need to see more of around these parts.
      *takes a knee in awe*
      WERQ isn’t strong enough.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=713709401 Randy Noak

Okay, just to be “that guy” the look is absolutely flawless except I’m not loving the nail color. But such a minor quibble over such a beautiful look!

    • HeyMrPhipps

I’m in complete agreement. There’s nothing about this look that I don’t love. And quite possibly the most awesome monikers ever!

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

Fantastic! Fits like a glove. (Don’t care for the lipstick color though.)

    • toriadoria

Beautiful dress, love the clutch and the bracelet, but the hair? No. (Faux?) hair tassles = I do not approve. Also, non-matching green earrings? No.

    • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Wow, she looks amazing. I want to know more about her.

    • Cathy S

      Wow.

    • Puckndc

      Bowed so low I can’t get up……

    • raininmai

The dress is a work of art.

    • crash1212

      STUNNING….just….STUNNING. That’s all I got. STUNNING!

    • MK03

Now I know how all those girls felt when they saw The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. DAYUM!!

    • piecesofconfetti

Cancel the Cannes red carpet now. Fan Bing Bing wins it all.

    • Carla_Charlton

Glorious! (I’m curious about the shoes…)

    • StellaZafella

The hair and the pictoral “stories” in the fabric of the gown are meant to celebrate the styles popular in the Tang dynasty (I read that in another blog). The brows are natural and, I think, perfect for her traditions. Her compexiion is flawless and without apparent effort in broad daylight. She is perfection and exquisite. This is a balanced marriage of ancient art and new fashion…And she even uses the haute model ‘stoop’ to be demure without losing a wit of power – there are lessons to be learned here which she teaches simply by example.
It’s beyond “werq” for me…there is no worthy score to give it. I just sigh and take it all in.

    • http://twitter.com/Mylynka Mylynka Cardona

I think this is the first time ever, in all your posts I have viewed, that I said “Wow!” out loud without realizing it.

      WOW!

    • nannypoo

Well that is pretty spectacular. I’ve never heard of this woman. Let’s see more.

    • http://twitter.com/flaming_mo Maureen Cox

Perfection. Hopefully this means we’ll see some chic chinoiserie, parrot green, and coral red lipstick as trends soon? *clapping hands with glee*

    • belfebe

      Done.  She wins.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

Wow, damn. Gorgeous everything and that hair style is so interesting in the best possible way.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Wow.  Only she could wear the weird tassel pony/bangs and werq ‘em!

    • Clueless_Jock

      Wow, wow, wow.

    • beebee10

      sweet jesus. even the nails!

    • SapphoPoet

      FTW!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I want to like this dress but it reminds me of an old quilt that I found tucked away in my grandma’s blanket chest.  Want earrings though.

      • crash1212

If you have a quilt tucked away that looks anything like this, please send it to me and I’ll make a FAB dress out of – Scarlett O’Hara style!

    • nancy

So beautiful, I gasped a bit too. That fabric looks like it was created to fit her and only her, the whole look is perfection. Sigh.

    • bookish

My tiny complaint is the lipstick color. But the dress is absolutely beautiful!

    • BazoDee

Just stunning! Dress, fit and styling are all fantastic (although I confess I did not care for her nail polish -minor quibble -still a WERQ with three snaps in Z formation.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2066192 Melissa Mellon

      Good God! She’s perfection!

    • boomchicabowwow

    • http://profiles.google.com/saramichelef Sarah Michele Ford

Shut. The Fuck. Up. I would never have predicted the fabulousness of the bottom 1/3 of the dress from the thumbnails. I’m swooning.

    • RuthGo

Please tell me she is about to be a major star so we can see more of her on the red carpet. That’s is unbelievably gorgeous.

      • http://www.facebook.com/guo.li.50 Guo Li

    • TheOriginalLulu

She looks amazing. The dress is spectacular.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

SPEC-TAC-U-LAR.  This reminds me how happy it always makes me when T&Lo post the runway shows from Asia.

    • Stubenville

Fab, but the hair is a little cray-cray, no?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMLK23QK6C7NMLMVVYA5POXKJY WhiteMage

         looks more like traditional chinese…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She deserves her own church, this is breathtaking.

    • Sweetvegan

So awesome! I thought that was her hair hanging down next to her face, but in the close-up, it looks like tassels. Awesome!

    • Amy Ellinger

Oh god, this moment for her gets better every year. I ADORE the fact that she goes traditional Chinese fabulosity for this event every year. (Remember the glorious yellow dragon dress?)  I am a lowly mortal, and she is my goddess this day.

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      WERQ^all the things.

    • Zippypie

HOLY SHIT, that is SUPERB from head to toe!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NMLK23QK6C7NMLMVVYA5POXKJY WhiteMage

      wow. that dress is stunning!

    • RL McGruder

      BingBing WHUT!!!!!  Goddess.

    • jilly_d

not with ya on the hair, TLo, but the rest is so fuckin fab I don’t even care.

    • Lilithcat

Okay, I think you need to retire WERQ, because I can’t imagine anyone topping this.  Heck, the woman’s very name is a WERQ!

    • GTrain

Wow. She just slayed every woman on every red carpet everywhere.

    • Sophie Collier

She totally just stole everyone else’s thunder.  Now must google this designer!  PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT!!!

    • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Helen

This is the 3rd in the series. stunning. patterns are copied directly from Antique China Vase.  Did Tom & Lo  write anything about the other 2 gowns  she wore at previous Cannes Film festivals? one was “Dragon”, the other was “Crane”.  I like the Crane.

    • Warrior89

      Gorgeous.

    • ri_dic

Stunning dress, but I think either the hair OR the make up. Both with that dress bring it to a Kabuki level. I’d rather see fashion drama on the red carpet- not costume.

      • Verascity

        She’s Chinese, not Japanese.

      • Lingus

I appreciate a good costume if it’s aesthetically appealing (Gaga for one; Minaj, no). To me, this is beyond aesthetically appealing and just downright gorgeous.

    • fiestyfashionfem

You want fashion as art – this is it.  Beats the flying fballs out of Marchesa and their lacy, nightmare, sheer shit.

    • Judy_J

My God in heaven…Fan has no equal. She looks like one of those perfect China dolls you see locked up in a curio cabinet.

    • Beth G

      Holy cow… that’s aamazing.

    • msdamselfly

I really do not like the  hairline on her forehead

    • http://www.facebook.com/baby98 Elizabeth Todd

      Gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • joything

Who in this holy world is Fan BingBing and why have I not had the opportunity to worship her before now?

    • PastryGoddess

I keep scrolling up and down over and over again.

She may have just won Cannes for realz

    • guest2visits

This is beautiful, unique, and interesting.
It reminded me a little of Nicole Kidman’s RC gown several years back; though I know they are much different dresses.

    • frances rossi

WOW! I’m bowing, I’m bowing. Flawless!!

    • http://twitter.com/wednesdaydreams Natalie

Thank you for finally featuring her! I know it’a a bit much, but you should feature her past ‘Cannes Opening Ceremony’ looks, including a gold dragon robe and a red tang dynasty inspired dress with cranes. By the way for everyone else—- the hair is inspired by the Tang Dynasty court ladies, and the dress tells the stories of ancient China’s 4 Great Beauties, 2 of which wrecked kingdoms because of their beauty.

I have no words [that haven't been said before on this thread]. But I have to talk about the earrings. It is the most delicious icing the this incredible cake.

she likes this designer, i cannot blame her. here is a picture of her from last year, from cannes, wearing another of his dresses:

you are correct on all counts. the only thing i can add that you havent chosen to highlight? is how real her skin looks. not that it doesnt look good, but it doesnt look like it was waxed before makeup was applied. i remember waxing from my misspent youth, i imagine they do something less crude & invasive now. but she doesnt look like she’s had any of it & she looks far better for that.

what a wonderful trifecta of posts today: noomi rapace, this one, TS. cant beat it w/ an, i dunno, something you beat things w/. not a stick, wouldnt have enough glory.

I haven’t seen any of Fan Bingbing’s actual work, but she has always looked FIERCE in every picture that I’ve seen of her on past red carpet events. (seriously google her, you won’t be disappointed) This one is no exception. I don’t love the hair. From the thumbnail I thought she was rocking a Louise Brooks-esque bob and was super-excited… but yeah no those hair flap things are just weird. The makeup, accessories, and gown on the other hand are gorgeous! Well done Ms. Bingbing.

    • Trinh D.

She totally had a nose job! But wow, this is so fabulous!

    • boweryboy

Fawking fierce eve n if I’m a bit iffy about the tassels in her hair.

Am I totally nitpicky if I noticed the earrings are the wrong shade of green for that dress?   It’s gorgeous overall but I it bothers me a little.

And those hair tassels are weird.  But she is FIERCE.   Must Google her!

      • Sally Brownson

    • NurseEllen

She looks incredibly great and good for her.  I don’t have time to look at 200+ responses, though, so can someone please give me the short answer to: why is it not “too matchy” for her to be sporting green gems and a green clutch, too?  Sometimes the subtleties of the “matchy” invocations escape me.

      • Sally Brownson

Matchiness is complicated. Basically, it’s too matchy if one picks accessories that are the same color as the dominant color of the outfit. If she had picked white accessories, that would be too matchy. In an outfit with very few colors, it’s preferable to pick out accessories in a color that doesn’t match but goes with the outfit, but in a dress that seems to have 20 colors, it’s better to just pick accessories in relatively minor colors. The fact that she picked accessories in two different greens and also had accessories that are “uncolored” is what makes this a perfect case of “going with” rather than matching exactly.
