Cannes WERQ: Diane Kruger in Vivienne Westwood

Posted on May 22, 2012

Diane Kruger attends the premiere of “Love” at Cannes in a Vivienne Westwood Gold Label gown.

Vivienne Westwood Gold Label Sequined Crepe Gown

…When you get it right, you get it fucking RIGHT. You’re a glittering, gold chalice of fierceness. An armored, Teutonic diva goddess. You WERQ that Valkyrie shit, girl.

One snap, because that’s how you show RESPECT.

  • Amazing. Like it better than Carey Mulligan’s MET Ball dress.

  • It’s  a little …. Stacey Keibler.  (or, a little Stacy Keibler) Dontcha think so?

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Yep.  It’s not the same dress, but has the same vibe with the odd twists and folds and I think Stacey pulled it off better.  Diane’s hair is bugging here… too flat and casual for such a dress!

      • Cathy S

I don’t know; I like the way her hair is waved in the opposite direction of the folds on the dress.

        • Spicytomato1

Yes and it seems to have more body than usual. Pretty.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I am thinking, she got pissed off at Karolina Kurkova for winning the Met Ball and killed her.  And in some weird high fashion twist on Silence of the Lambs, well, “It rubs the sequins on its skin.”

  • DAMN, GIRL. I am not a fan of gold sequins in general, but good Lord. This is so much better on her than on the model.

    • This is decidedly silver on my screen…

      • The original is silver, but the one on Diane is definitely gold. (TLo’s post confirms!) Gold sequins do sort of give off a sheen of both, though.

        • I don’t think so. I think the name of the sub line within Vivienne Westwood is “Gold Label”….

          • I was referring to this: “You’re a glittering, gold chalice of fierceness.”

Anyone else want to weigh in? Clearly we can’t get anywhere without looking at each other’s screens!

          • muzan-e

Silver – surrounded, I think, by warm lights and red carpet, and maybe even pick up some golden tint from her own skin. It’s the red-and-ochre surrounds that are setting her on fire, I think – which is a spectacularly gorgeous effect.

          • amf0001

it’s definitely silver but the warm lights are picking up gold hues. (at least on my screen it is)

          • Soo…apparently we are agreed that we all disagree? Ok! That works! (I will pretty much never say that this is silver, because the only silver I see is clearly the direct reflection of a flash, and even the close-up is SO different from the original. Rose-gold is the closest to what I’m getting, but I will concede that could be reflections from the carpet.)

            Regardless, she looks smashing.

          • Corsetmaker

Yes, looks like silver to me too with reflected colours. If it’s gold then it’s a very pale gold.

          • siriuslover

It looks a little of both. Clearly not the silver shown on the model, and the color looks richer. I wonder if it is silver but the red carpet is reflecting in it causing the richness? I don’t know. It’s kind of chameleon-like

  • Sobaika

And there’s no puddle of fabric at her feet! Perfection.

  • Perfection. My favorite so far out of Ms. Diane from Cannes so far

  • LuisaNL

    Gorgeous. Just perfect.

  • the guy in the 3rd pic is like “damn grrrrl”

  • I like how her hair references the draping but isn’t cheesy about it. Perfect balance.

  • IH

Amazing and that’s one occasion where it looks better on her than it does in it’s original form which isn’t appealing at all.

  • TheOriginalLulu

WOW, atta girl. Whichever stylist put her in this dress should be on her permanent payroll.

    • I thought she didn’t have a stylist or a makeup artist, but did both herself.

      • TheOriginalLulu

I have no idea; I was just assuming it was a stylist.
        Either way, she looks gorgeous.

  • crash1212

Never having worn anything remotely resembling this serious column of fierce, I wonder, does that material chafe the underarms? I worry for her underarms.

    • blogless

Lol I was thinking the same thing. I knew I was getting old when I started looking at clothes and thinking, “could be painful, possible rash, and chafe”.

    • trust me, it DOES. I have a sequined dress with short sleeves which fits like second skin and it hurts like hell. I manually removed some of the sequins that stood over the edge of fabric but still when you move your arms, the skin gets raw.

    • Anathema_Device

I have a sequined shirt I have to wear under a blazer or sweater if I’m walking much in it because it chafes badly. If she tottering in to an event, sitting, then tottering out, she’s probably fine.

  • ROOTS!!! Ruins it. Hairdressers should REFUSE to do hair unless they can do the roots.

    • Oh yes. Roots enrage me. I’m appalled when people get all gussied up up and even fix their hair without acknowledging the roots.

    • Anathema_Device

I don’t care for roots either, but it is kind of a “thing” now. Women are coloring their intentionally that way. Sort of an offshoot of the whole ombre thing.

  • stunning.

  • Speechless in the presence of such an ideal of glamor.

  • aimee_parrott

  • “Oh, this old thing?”

  • LOVE IT!!!

  • Anathema_Device

Wow. I can’t get over how impeccably tailored that is to her body. Incredible and she more than pulls it off: She owns it. WERQ indeed.

  • Judy_S

They should do a 3d laser scan of her and use the resulting data to create a new Cannes award, say about 1/6 life-size. For the most fabulous gown/look at the festival events.

  • G

The first and only dress by VW that I’ve loved… but it looks like she can’t take a deep breath!

  • She looks fantastic but the hair (while better than usual) could use a little more oomph.

  • Not crazy about the hair puddling in the dress’s boob pocket, but the dress itself looks amazing, and she’s wearing the heck out of it.

    • kimmeister

Agree about the boob pocket.  Her makeup is perfection though.

  • She looks fab, but way too skinny in this dress.

  • That’s a pretty amazing dress. She’s working her model skills here because a ‘person’ couldn’t pull this dress of. You have to know how to stand in it and make it werq. And she does. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that the expression on her face is always between halfway between automaton and clench teethed boredom.

    • Oh, is she a former model? Did not know that, but it explains so much.

  • out for a walk

Snap indeed. And her hair is over one shoulder, mermaid style, yet manages to look fantastic!

  • She looks fierce.

  • NDC_IPCentral

The reflection of the red carpet on the dress add  a wonderful dimension and depth. Stunning.

    • Qitkat

Exactly what I thought too. I wonder how it would look on a deep blue or green carpet. Perhaps at the opera.

It also drapes so beautifully on Diane that it almost seems like a different dress from the model’s. Adore the curved back line also.

  • MilaXX

Not crazy with the way the fabric looks up close, but she has a total look here. Very pretty and well fitted.

  • MzzPants

Not loving the hair.  Wish she’d committed to a full up do.

  • mozzer0906

  • holdmewhileimnaked

&, of course, who designed it.

  • Huh.  All I’m getting is Barbie.

  • EEKstl

Whoda thunk that a gold sequin version of that gown would WERQ – and yet, here it is. Wowza.

  • Char Crop

  • nannypoo

Total fabulosity. I love how the swoop in her hair mimics the drape of the dress.

    • Me too. I think the way the dress drapes on her makes it look like a living, breathing, undulating, piece of fabulousness. I think from now on, when I’m down I’m going to say to myself, “You are a glittering gold chalice of fierceness!”

  • FANTASTIC. But, as always, needs more PACEY.

  • TieDye64

The overall effect is fierce and fab.

  • fursa_saida

Love. Reminds me that when she was cast in Inglourious Basterds, she was cast to play a movie star. She looks like a damn movie star, full stop.

  • siriuslover

She does look great, but the back of that dress looks painful.

  • Lilyana_F

  • Bill Curtis

You know, if she had a gold tulle bow on her shoulder and opera gloves, she’d be <a href="; the Baroness Elsa von Schraeder from The Sound of Music.

  • Holy shit.  WERQ!!!

  • piecesofconfetti

MILES better than the promo photo. Love!

  • Y’all didn’t even mention the one-shoulder hair!  But I agree, she looks stunning.

  • This would look heinous on pretty much anyone else.

  • MoHub

    That’s pretty conservative for Westwood.

  • giiiirrrr

Oh my freaking God, she looks AH-MAY-ZING.  The strapless bodice – holy crap – IT FITS.  Nice to know that’s even possible.

  • Looks better on her than the model! That dress needs a girl with some hips.

  • suzq

The stars in Cannes are showing up way better than they’ve been doing at the Oscars.  Doesn’t seem fair.

  • mjude

    a snap indeed

  • Judy_J

    Gorgeous!  Spot-on perfection!

  • msdamselfly

Over the top, not in a good way

  • Lina_bee

    Stylist FTW! o/

  • belfebe

  • kikisayshi

Fabulous! I don’t know what dress is on that model, because it looks nothing like this gorgeous gown that DK is working the shit out of.

  • charlotte

Third German in a row. Hansi should take note: this is how gorgeousness works.

  • butterflysunita

Maybe it’s a WERQ, but it’s not a Fan Bingbing level WERQ.

  • See Jada Pinkett-Smith?  This was obviously specially made for her, fits to perfecton and looks unfreakingbelievable.

  • Sara__B

That bodice fits so high that I’m pretty sure she suffered for all this fabulousness, but this is a stunning, attention-grabbing, movie star gown and she’s wearing it beautifully.

  • Jessica O’Connell

    She looks INSANELY GOOD.

  • samo_samo

She looks lovely, but I’m not loving it as much as you guys are. Is it just me or does it look like she’s holding her breath?

  • Amy Ellinger

Perfection. One of the best looks so far this year.

  • Nailed it.

  • FUCK YES!

  • She looks stunning. Plus, best I’ve seen her hair done in AGES.

  • Dayum!  Fucking P-E-R-F-E-C-T!

  • turtleemily

I had to do a double take at the close-up shot since the way the sequins reflect on her upper arm makes it look like she has stretch marks.

  • m0r0

The rear view photo is especially great because it captures that Frenchman drooling over her.

  • Zippypie

She looks gorgeous but I’m not loving it.  She looks intensely uncomfortable in her body.  She’s stiff like she is so tightly stuffed into that dress she can’t breathe or move and god help her sitting down.  It ain’t going to happen.  That keeps it from being a WERQ for me.  Hair and makeup – perfect!  No wonder Pacey is wandering around depressed – he can’t hope to compete.

    • Corsetmaker

Those dresses are all built on corsets, but VW corsets are generally powernet and minimal boning so they’re lighter weight than the real thing.
She’ll still be able to sit down easily enough.

    • makeityourself

Okay, this was the first even slightly negative comment, so I’m jumping in. Yes, this is perfect in every way, but it is boring. And as lovely as Ms Kruger is, I am always looking for some hint of personality in her face.

  • Bow down, motherfuckers.

  • Lisa Dugan

Beautiful!  I love the way the top of the gown looks from the back as well.  Fits her  like a dream.  It also looks a million times better than it does on the model.  In that pic it looks rather cheap and way too short.

  • When she gets it right, she looks like you can’t even touch her. Nor even breathe her air, she’s that stunning.

  • Corsetmaker

Stunning. That’s all there is to say.

  • Wow.

I LOVE the look on the guy facing her in the last shot. He looks like he’s just seen a vision.

  • ballerinawithagun

Only Vivienne Westwood could make this fabric & origami look this incredible!

  • Spectacular.

  • Naveena Samuel

Tom and Lorenzo – you are my new favorite people on earth. Where have you been all my life? I think it and you say it – with much more elan and fabulousness than I can ever muster. xoxoxox.

  • guest2visits

She’s gorgeous… I love both editions of this dress; super sparkly and subtle shimmer.

  • That is a testament to foundation garments. Absolutely glorious.

  • BazoDee

    Flawless! Just flawless!!

  • quiltrx

She looks AMAZING.  Glad she didn’t default to the Heidi/Swiss Miss hair, because this ‘do is perfect for the dress.

  • Sophie Collier

Perfect.  If that is a corset undergarment giving her that super-defined waist-to-hip curve, just tell me what brand.  Damn, Girl is fierce.

    • Corsetmaker

Part of the dress. Lots of VW’s styles have corset bodices 🙂

  • I’d tap that.  Just sayin………..

  • clairellis

My lord Pacey is one lucky man. She is always gorgeous.

  • This is the best dress, worn flawlessly, that I’ve seen all year. Love Vivi.

  • Stargatefan

Definitivly a dress built on an industrial strenght corset, and one with a little too exaggerated hip-waist  ratio for my taste: looks like she is unable to breathe. But she looks stunning and no-one could have worn it better.

  • RzYoung

Joshua Jackson should get a ring on it FAST!! -imagine the babies!!!

  • amywinns

Wow, I just admire her so much.

  • She looks like a lovely perfume bottle. The expensive ones, those that cost you two months’ salary.

  • I love it. That will go down as one of those amazing RC looks. Really. I love her.

  • Susan Crawford

Bowing down, snapping fingers, doing neck rolls. Worth tomorrow’s trip to the chiropractor because this is SO perfect.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Love this-definitely a WERQ in my book!

  • bitch! werq

  • HOW THE HELL DOES SHE BREATH?!?!?!!? I think that’s why she has that look in her face

  • Yes, yes, and yes! Und ja!

  • Bowing down to this fierce goddess.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

  • Have I mentioned that I love her?
