Cannes Watch: Nicole Kidman in Ralph Lauren

Posted on May 29, 2012

Minions with especially good memories might recall that we recently told Nicole Kidman to go to hell for adding to the string of near-perfect ladystar looks coming out of Cannes this month. Also: this.

Certainly, as bitchy fashion bloggers, we support any ladystar who gets it right, but, also as bitchy fashion bloggers, it gets a little boring typing “Brava!” all the time when what we really want to do is make a crack about someone’s shoes.

So in that light, let us welcome Miss Nicole back into the fold. Sure, she’s wearing yet another stunning gown that suits her to a T…

Nicole Kidman attends ‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’ Premiere during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Ralph Lauren gown.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Bruna Tenorio

… but PRAISE JESUS, because she left her hotel room with total crazy-lady hair.

We suppose this was meant to be a Harlow-esque ’30s-inspired ‘do, but boy howdy, does it NOT suit her. She looks like she got up out of her chair and wandered off right in the middle of getting her hair done.

That is some cray-cray hair she’s got going on.  But the gown is simply gorgeous.

    • LuisaNL

beautiful gown ruined by the stupid ‘do.

  • momogus

I think her hair looks adorable. She looks fantastic.

    • EveEve

Hair is great! Glad she ditched that boring wig from the other day.

      • What makes you think this isn’t a wig? 🙂

    • I like her hair, too! Very Carole Lombard. Dress is just perfect on her.

  • Patricia Gillett

What is up with the need that certain designers have to frame the vajayjay?

  • That dress is beautiful… but yeah, that hair is crazy.

    • charlotte

My morning hair just walked a red carpet.

      • Aurumgirl

Your morning hair?  You must know how hard it is to make your hair stop looking like Nicole’s.  I’m rarely successful.  Nicole is wearing my hair, colour and all, with that incredible dress.  Poor thing.

      • Maddie_Faddenoid

Could you send your morning hair to me, please? I’d offer you mine in return but you might not want it – I stole it from a drunk guy who’d passed out in a wind tunnel.

  • anotherkate

I love Ralph Lauren. Here’s hoping this appearance (minus the hair) spurs a resurgence of popularity on the red carpet. I’d certainly prefer to see ladies in Ralph than a million Elie Saabs and Marchesas. They had their moment, but there’s just something so glamorous and old-school about this gown that makes a movie star look like a MOVIE STAH.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Somehow Ralph always seems to get it right when it comes to the luxe look, doesn’t he? That gown is gorgeous-and I so envy Kidman for having the bod to carry it off!

  • 5HT

I agree, the dress needs a sleeker hairstyle. The model looks stunning.

    • AmandaCathleen

I agree—I actually think this looks SO much better on the model. I love the shape it gives her, which makes me think that while this looks ok on Nicole, it would’ve looked amazing on someone with a few more curves.

  • Sara__B

Hairdo is part Shirley Temple, part tornado. (Perhaps the wind did play havoc with her hair, and that gown is stunning.)

    • Anathema_Device

Was it “Terms of Endearment” where Jack Nicholson took Shirley MacLaine for that ride in the convertible? That scene reminds me of this ‘do.

  • crash1212

I wonder how much the weather is affecting the hair of these beauties? This looks like it could’ve been a good idea, but perhaps wind and rain took its toll. She looks stunning. Is that Mr. Clive I spy with my little eye…with longer than acceptable side burns? Altogether, lovely looking cast.

    • Beardslee

ooh, Clive!  Thanks for spotting him!  I’m with you on the sideburns though – yuck.  Let’s hope it’s just for a role.

  • I LOVE THAT DRESS. More to the point, I wish I had that body to pull it off.

In additional accessory news, she looks glowingly happy in these images.

  • schadenfreudelicious

that hair has left crazy and moved directly to bat shit…..

  • bluefish

The dress is fantastic — and I love the hair too.  She looks amazing.  And she looks alive!

  • BrooklynBomber

… but PRAISE JESUS, because she left her hotel room with total crazy-lady hair.

Thank you! I thought for a sec you were gonna let that go by!

  • Anathema_Device

That is serious crazy-lady hair. It is intensified by that crazy-eye smile she does because she can’t move her eyebrows or forehead due to all the Botox.

I just cut all my hair off because too often it would get all unruly and South Park bus driver looking. Sort of like this.

  • ChaCha_70

You are so right boys. Gown is absolutely stunning on her but the hair is horrid. Wouldn’t say it ruins the look but she’s not perfect this time. Yes!

  • Joyce VG

    yeah forehead down is glorious!

  • SpcilK

She looks Amazing and her hair doesn’t bother me at all.

  • aimee_parrott

Hee!  Yup, the hair’s bad, all right.  But man, that dress is killa and she is WORKING IT.

  • Eva_baby

The dress is simply GORGE!  But yeah the hair….effed up.  And I am sorry but I think she has years yet to go before her face will become unfrozen.

  • MK03

How is it that she’s so fair yet does not have a single freckle?? What’s her secret?

    • Makeup and virgin blood.  That woman is COVERED in freckles! I take it you haven’t seen “BMX Bandits” starring a curly-haired freckly-faced Nik on a rad BMX bike. Totes bitchin’.

  • janetjb

That’s a whole lot of hair for her delicate features to carry off.  That said I kind of like it.

  • sleepycat

I love this and like the hair too.

  • Gorgeous dress, tragic hair.

  • watched the movie last night and thought she was great. She seems so much more comfortable in her own skin now and happy. So with that in mind, I think she looks great. Even with tragic hair

  • I was too distracted by those things on Clive Owen’s face to notice her hair. He needs to seriously reconsider the length of his sideburns.

    • filmcricket

I wish I could like this a million times. Coincidentally, Nic is sporting some serious Zellweger face in that first photo, no?

    • another_laura

Suddenly I was wondering whether Clive has been cast to play Richard Burton as he was in the 70s.

  • gdougs

Her hair’s a little crazy, but I would much prefer this over her pin straight, botoxed look from a couple months ago. I’ll take crazy hair any day if she looks this happy and natural 🙂

  • filmcricket

I’m actually okay with the hair. It looks a little wonky from some angles, but it suits the flapper-esque style of the dress and the back doesn’t look as assy as I was expecting. The dress is to die for and looks great on her. In other news, is Clive Owen playing Elvis now? What is with those tragic mutton chops?

  • Nayasabrina

For some reason this dress makes me think of the Chrysler building.

    • Sue_Asponte

      Jay should get royalties!

  • That dress is STUNNING but wtf with the hair & makeup?  If you’re gonna do “old Hollywoodland” glamour, do it right!  (I.e. A strong red lip, chiseled check bones, dramatic eyes, and sculpted hair.)

  • cmb92191

The gown looks like it could be Lady Sybill’s in some fancy soiree!  God, I miss Downton Abbey!

  • I want to like the dress but it looks like she has quadruple limp penises hanging from her waist area.

  • Spectacular dress. I don’t mind the hair so much. She really has been looking great on the RC lately.

  • trisker

I love her hair too.  Glad it’s shorter, or no extensions, or whatever.

  • MilaXX

That hair needs a less botox-y forehead to accompany it, and the slightly messy aspect of it isn’t working. As you mentioned it looks like someone pinned her hair back to do her face and let her walk out that way.

  • Sophie Collier

Sorry guys, but the hair’s working.  She looks dy-no-mite so just say “Brava” and get it over with. 😉

  • It actually looks beautiful from the back, but there’s something slightly Princess Leia-esque about it from the front.

  • Lisa

Yup, I agree 100% – totally perfect, till you get to the crazy-lady hair!

  • guest2visits

I know what you’re saying… but I still like the hair.  She looks amazing; again.

  • TieDye64

    Stunning dress. Frightening hair. Wackadoo!

  • MzzPants

The hair’s a little ‘Miss Hannigan’ and I love it.  So glad she’s back to being fucking fabulous at all turns.  The Botox-Nashville vibe was tragic.  Maybe Europe brings out the best in her.

  • Elle Cobbett

I love her in the dress, and I don’t care one way or another about the hair, but sweetie, ease up on the botox. Isn’t it hard to act when your face doesn’t move?

  • snarkykitten

The guy next to her seems to agree, judging by his face!

  • Call me Bee

Simply stunning.  The gown is gorgeous, fits beautifully and is exactly the right length!  Disagree about Nikki’s hair–it really suits the dress and I applaud her for trying a different style (are you listening, Ms Anniston?  Hmmmmm??)  Plus–she looks like she’s having a really good time, and that’s the best.

  • sashaychante

Cindy Loo Who is missing her hair…please Nicole, give it back.

  • cleep1000

That dress on her body – a knock-out. The hairstyle is a little childish and takes away from the sophistication of the look.

  • lifetime_student

So many of the pics from Cannes show that the wind is pretty strong, so I wonder if the hair looked more Harlow-esque before she stepped outside.

  • eight_of_nine

What is that under her armpit?

  • Are you kidding me about the hair? Maybe I’m just so tired of seeing her (and Kardashian and JLo) with their hair tightly pulled back (helping them look younger by stretching their facial skin), but seeing her curls out and about is a freakin’ relief.

  • Love the hair!

  • girl, that is not your hair (style).  I can appreciate the curls, but this is a mess.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Well…you’re right about the hair, but she looks so fabulous it doesn’t really matter!

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Well…you’re right about the hair, but she looks so fabulous it doesn’t really matter!

  • Laylalola

Funny, I saw the thumbnail and thought she looked so much better with her hair pulled away for a change.

  • Judy_S

I am not a fan of hers but I saw Gellhorn & Hemingway on TV last night and thought she nailed that part. So I will applaud her for pulling the eye from the dress to her head via slightly ditzy hair.

  • afabulous50

OMG I would kill for that body.  But, alas that is crazy-clown hair.

  • julnyes

If the hairstyle wasn’t lopsided, she would have another excellent look under her belt. As it is, she is still a total IN, just not a WERQ.

  • TheOriginalLulu

That first picture is awesomely funny. I imagine she had a gorgeous hairdo to go with that gorgeous gown, then she got into the limo and the a/c was busted, so she was forced to open all of the windows. Miraculously, there was no traffic on the freeway, so the driver booked all the way to the event, so the inside of the limo was like the center of a tornado all the way there. Just before stepping out of the limo, Nic pulled out her compact and took a quick look in the tiny mirror, smoothed out the front and repositioned her barrettes and thought she was good to go.

  • SapphoPoet

LOVE the gown. Totally crazy hair.

  • mellorcr

Minor quibble here, but it bothers me that the skirt seem to be twisted and it makes the design hang crooked.   You can see this on both the model and Nicole, so I don’t think it’s just that Nicole put it on crooked.  I wonder if the skirt was cut off-grain or distorted in the beading process?

  • m0r0

    Love the hair.

  • emily wolfe

the dress thats in the background of the runway photo is Michelle Dockery’s from the Met Gala!

  • I love the crazy hair with the streamline dress

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Girl, that is not your hair.

  • Forget the hair, THAT DRESS IS GORGEOUS ON HER.

  • Yeah, I generally like the hair. It isn’t perfect but the idea is good. I like the volume and “length” on her. Normally I think she looks a tad corpse-like, but the fullness here totally helps. And, yes, gorgeous dress.

  • Wow, that dress is SO great.  I didn’t even notice her hair until you said something about it.

  • Miriam Kumari

She has the figure for the dress and it looks great on her, I think the hair is actually non-descript.

  • turtleemily

Loving the hair color, though. Makes her look younger than that harsh blonde she had for so long.

  • Allison Woods

Yes, but she’s certainly schooling the younguns with the dress.

  • Maddie_Faddenoid

As far as I’m concerned Nicole is WERQing so hard it hurts.

  • littlemissstrange

I think she looks HOT TO DEATH. I like the hair actually. Not absolutely perfect but better than most.

  • no further questions. Guilty as charged.

  • jennifervney

I like the hair! Hooray for curls! 🙂

  • Carlodog

    Her hair looks just fine!

  • Holy crap no.

  • EEKstl

LOVE that gown on her, perfection.  And yes, it’s cray cray hair but she tends towards the “stiff” so much a little cray cray goes a long way on her.

  • ok, what is the weird indent just below her armpit… At first I thought it was one of those clear straps ladystars have when wearing low, open backed dresses, but there does not appear to be a strap across the back…  Whatever is going on it is making me crazypants.

  • the first thing i thought was, “oh good!  she’s branching out with the hairdo!”
    adore the dress on her.
