Cannes Watch: Mia Wasikowska in Prada

Posted on May 21, 2012

Sometimes, we look at some ridiculously privileged celebrity and start clucking at them like worried gay uncles because of their poor choices. In other words, we looked at these pics and before we could stop ourselves, an “Oh, SWEETIE” escaped from our lips.

Mia Wasikowska attends the ‘Lawless’ photocall during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in Prada.

Salmon-colored peep-toes? With THIS? Oh, sweetie. Your imaginary gay uncles are very disappointed with your poor color-matching skills.

Also: makeup, dear. You’re getting your picture taken in a very cute Prada dress at the Cannes Film Festival. Come on now.

She does look as if she’d hoped to avoid the cameras.

  • Rand Ortega

I must be having trouble w/ colors today. The pumps look orange to me. Time to make that optometrist appointment.

    • Knightley

It’s really one of those colors that look different on computers.  On my desktop the shows exactly match the dress (which I know is considered a mortal sin to some) and on my laptop, the shoes are sorta pinkish/salmon color, like TLO said…just enough off that you have to ask why?

Honestly, she doesn’t look bad at all, but just not like a celebrity.  She’d fit right in at Sunday school.  Just not really Cannes dressed.

  • Anathema_Device

I don’t hate it, although it has a bit of a too sweet Easter Sunday vibe to it.

A little jewelry would have gone a long way here.

    • lifetime_student

      Knightley and Anathema_Device,

My first reaction was “Sunday School teacher on Easter Sunday.” But even she wouldn’t wear those shoes.

    • Looks like an Easter egg plate I have.

  • Kate4queen

    I like the dress 🙂

    • carolynmo

      Me, too, Kate4queen!

      • miagain

         Me too!!

        • ChaquitaPhilly

          Me, three!!!

    • Lisa Dugan

      I think she looks adorable.

  • I think this is the first time I’ve realised that she is just a tiny slip of a girl. In v. bad shoes.

  • It’s cute if a little low-key for Cannes.I keep imagining it on Kiernan Shipka.

    • MilaXX

I think this would be a great dress for Kiernan Shipka, Halle Steinfeid or even Chloe Morantz.

      • Adriana_Paula

But you know who’s gonna wear it next?  Kristin Davis.

        • MilaXX

That would be even more tragic than Mia wearing it. Mia could have accessorized this look appropriate, but Kristin has no business wearing this ever.

  • judith traherne

    I *love* that print.

    • Spicytomato1

Me, too. For a throw pillow. Actually I don’t mind it on the dress, but in this setting she looks a bit Ikea while everyone else is more Roche Bobois.

      • Flooby

I would never have guessed Prada- my first thought was Target.

  • G

What color shoes would you recommend?  She always looks as thought she would rather be somewhere else.

    • Adriana_Paula

I would have gone gunmetal gray, m’self.

  • I think she looks a bit of all right.  I’m in agreement about the shoes, though.  Something with a stronger color, or perhaps a pair of cute sandals would have worked better..

    • MilaXX

I think pulling that darker purple color would work or even a metallic sandal. It just needs something that reads grownup.

      •  How about a dark purple, metallic sandal?   CUTE!

        • MilaXX

I like! Would definitely help make this look more grownup

  • tired_mommy

I love the dress so much I’ll forgive the rest.

  • Ms_Flyover

I rather love the fact that she isn’t wearing 4 pounds of make-up faked to look minimal  She’s young, pretty, has great skin and looks terrific.  IMVHO.

    • Pannyx

I completely and utterly agree. She has such great skin why cover it up with distracting make-up.

      • Lisa_Cop

Just a bit stronger lip and some mascara would be nice. But I love her; since HBO’s first season of In Treatment.

    • Terrie_S

There’s looking young and then there’s looking 12.

    • calimon

      THANK. YOU.

  • hughman

Throw on some pearls and white sandals and my grandmother would have worn the shit out of this dress to her “Bridge Club” in 1965. (It would have been a Lily Pulitzer and by “bridge” I mean tons of cocktails and Pall Malls).

    • norseofcourse

      Your grandma = awesome.

  • butterflysunita

I agree about the shoes, but I think she looks very fresh and pretty.

  • MilaXX

It’s a cute dress, but I think the poor shoe choice, lack of makeup and jewelry makes this feel a little too young for her. A darker shoe, a pair of earrings and some face paint would help tremendously.

  • kim i

strappy gold sandals would be cute with this.

  • She does look very young here. But I think the makeup choice works for her– I was struck by how totally perfect and fresh her skin looks. Maybe I’m worn out from all the way overworked, over countoured makeup mask looks we’ve seen here.

The shoes work for me here too. This whole look works, but I would transplant her to another less-formal film festival.

  • mountainFashionista

She seriously looks like the blonde version of my mom from the ’80s!  Adorable in that matchy ’80s way.

  • I don’t love the shoes, but they don’t significantly affect my liking of this dress.  She normally looks so droopy and sad – but this is bright, happy, and cheerful.  Lovely for a beautiful day on the French Riviera.

  • Can I have this dress, please? I promise I’ll wear a better pair of shoes with it!

  • nannypoo

I want to like this, I really do, but it’s just too juvenile for an adult to wear for an event for famous people. And I don’t care how fresh-looking and pretty she is – she needs makeup when she gets her picture taken.

  • terekirkland

Shoes look a little bridal to me, and really don’t go with a dress this casual even in a different color. I would have preferred sandals. Metallic, maybe. Plus some jewelry. And make-up. You’d think this dress would be easy-breezy, but the shoes look over-thought and the dress itself looks almost like it’s from the juniors’ department on her. Too bad. 🙁

  • MightyMarshal

This would be great with a nice textured patent peeptoe in that avacado-y green that has become something of a signature for Prada leather goods. Also with makeup and some actual effort put into the hair.

  • Girl, you BROUGHT IT last year! I can’t believe that this year you look so… not into it. It’s like you came dressed to go to another event after the festival.

  • MightyMarshal

Also, some nice chunky gold statement jewelry would great help this.

  • I thinks she is such a cute young lady! 🙂

  • bluefish

    Cute cute dress.

  • Sara__B

She looks about 12, and ready for after-church lunch with her grandma. It’s a sweet, breezy, summery dress. I just wish she’d styled it for a 20-year-old instead.

  • another_laura

The dress is adorable on her.  Those shoes, yech!

  • Lizzyisi

She’s on my love-for-no-reason-always list. That dress is adorable and suits her very well. I also admire young beautiful women doing the “naked face” make-up. But I hate peeptoes and that color. Also, because she is, essentially, going to a party, she should have some jewelry.

  • Judy_J

The dress is indeed adorable.  Shoes, hair and makeup….awful.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Enh. I don’t care if it’s Prada, that dress looks like it was purchased at the $10 store. The shoes came from the sale bin in the back.

She looks like she’s crampy and wishes she were curled up in bed with her cats watching Judge Judy. I sympathize with the poor dear.

  • Elizabeth Wiggs Maas

I love the dress though! TLo, I do wish you’d tell us what color you would have chosen for heels…we’re here to LEARN (as well as judge) (well, we’re mostly here to judge) (but learning wouldn’t be a bad thing).

  • uprightcitizen

On my computer, the shoes look like a pretty good match for one of the lesser-used colors in the dress … which I thought was supposed to be the way to go?

    • terekirkland

On my monitor, it’s a pastel-adjacent shade between orange and the pink, not as hot and saturated as the colors in the dress. Definitely more of a salmon than a coral.

  • VeryClaire

    Very cute dress though

  • Qitkat

What a sweet gift-wrapped package she is!

  • Super_Red

I really love this- my initial reaction was “Oh! She’s so cute!” and that’s a pretty good initial reaction to have.

  • Lina_bee

She looks like she’s eight years old in this. Jesus.

  • msdamselfly

I like her look–kind of retro

  • marilyn

I like it, but think it is not ‘out there’ enough for Cannes.

  • Caaro3

Yeah, gotta disagree, TLo.  She looks adorable and real; shoes are good.  And she’s wearing make-up, just not Level Xtina make up.

  • Sabrina Stern

I feel like the shoes are half way between the orange and the pink in the dress, and don’t clash with either color, so I’m ok with them.

  • guest2visits

It would have been better if the shoes matched; cute dress though.  I guess this is not under dressed for Cannes, ?

  • MK03

    Poor Gudrun.

  • joe_tey83

Did she get this dress from the children’s section?

  • Totally disagree. I think she looks great. That’s actually a lot of makeup for Mia so I think she is listening to you but baby steps men, baby steps.

  • Kayceed

I think this looks down-market. Like farmer’s market.

  • drdirection

I would kill for that dress

  • formerlyAnon

If I hadn’t seen her looking quite glamorous (and her age, which is early 20s), I’d be frowning at you for bashing on the poor, awkward-cute 16 year old. This is not so bad, just the total look comes off as rather unsophisticated.

Well, it IS at the beach, right?

  • Warrior89

Hate the dress, shoes, and most of all, the hair.

  • My mum made me dresses exactly like this when I was 10 years old. It’s like they went back to the 80s to source this fabric.

  • I’m sure I wore that dress to my fifth birthday party.

  • CatherineRhodes

    I think she looks adorable.

  • NurseEllen

I’m all for beach casual, but really……    She looks like she’s auditioning for “Sally Draper as a grown up” in the new series, “Mad Men: 1980”.

  • Susan Crawford

For a moment, I thought I was looking at an old picture of Claire Danes from “My So-Called Life” days. Odd.

I really like this little frock – very sweet, summery, ingenue and fits her beautifully. With all the possible colors for shoes, however, falling back on salmon pink was just laziness on the part of her stylists. And her make-up team needs to get up earlier, take their ADHD meds and have a double espresso – poor thing was in desperate need of a little blush and lip color.

    • zmayhem

      I swear, it’s the head-tilted hair-tuck. 1000% Angela Chase.

  • AWS

Shoes way to matchy matchy.  I like the dress.  But if she were fat (like me), she’d look like an Easter egg.  I don’t mind the no make-up but THAT paired with the dress makes her look tween.

The imaginary gay uncles owe her a bitch slap.

  • quiltrx

I can pretend I didn’t see the shoes…but I wish she had done something a bit more sophisticated with her hair.  That with the super-cute dress comes off a bit childish-looking.

  • zmayhem

I can’t help loving this whole look. It’s just… between the young makeup, her build, the length of her hair, and that last head-slightly-tilted, tucking-a-stray-lock-behind-one-ear gesture, I am having total heart-cramping flashbacks to My So-Called Life era Claire Danes, and hence reduced to a pile of sentimental big-sisterly adoring fluttery goo.

If that photo were to come to life and Mia were to shrug on an old flannel shirt and sigh, “Have you ever noticed the way he leans?” I would just drop dead of a nostalgia coronary.

    • MilaXX

That’s part of the problem, Claire Danes was playing a 15 year old. Mia is a grown 20something at one of the biggest film festivals around. She shouldn’t be dressed like a child.

      • zmayhem

I kind of agree, and yet… when I was a 20something, I wobbled back and forth between days when I felt All Knowing and All Woman, and days when I felt like everyone must be mad if they couldn’t tell I was really just shy of 14. If I’d had an unlimited wardrobe and makeup budget, I would have worn every inch of this outfit some days. Not all of them, but if I’d had the option to show my inside on the outside… yup.

  • Marian Humin

The dress is cute. Everything else must go. I agree about putting on some makeup.

  • Make-up is tragic.

  • egl48

    So sweet.

  • a nice purpley-grey peep toe would have been cute.
    and some make-up.

  • pookiesmom

Aaw, I think she looks adorable!

  • diff shoes, diff lip color. but the dress is adorable!

  • Zippypie

I love the dress but she looks lost at sea!

  • Lisa_Cop

Love her but not in this dress. The cut is not very sophisticated and makes her look kind of boxy. Also would have preferred either pumps or strappy sandals to the platform peep toe.

  • is she wearing sheer white hose, or is that the ACTUAL color of her legs? Wow! I thought I was fish belly white!

  • TLoFanBoy

C’mon guys, she actually looks her age. She should do this while she can. It’s sorta Euro-hippie, and looks fresh and lovely.

  • TieDye64

Adorable dress, but this girl needs to step it up a bit now. Better makeup and better shoes. C’mon, you can do it hon. No excuses, you’ve been in the spotlight long enough and you’re not 12.

  • RzYoung

The shoes don’t offend me, she needs make up but in that shot where she’s looking straight at the camera she’s got such a cute face. However, yes, it is Cannes and the price of that dress would get me to Cannes and back, so girl, dignify it with some slap!!

  • DaveUWSNYC

Reminds me of Good & Plenty for some reason…

  • For me she will always be Jane Eyre hence I can forgive the poor choice of shoe color and the fact her pale skin gives us the illusion she is wearing support hose. You are fabulous Jane.

  • jw_ny

  • SewingSiren

The dress looks right to me for a French resort town. The shoes don’t bug. In.

  • It looks like a dress that Maria would make for Liesl out of the curtains.

  • I don’t think it’s THAT bad.  Could use some help though.  Love the dress.

  • miagain

Am I looking at the same picture that you are? … I think she looks darling.  Possibly, the color didn’t photograph well.  The salmon shoes pick up the orange swirly thingies.

  • sweetlilvoice

I love it…super springy and cute. And not hoochie length either.

  • I agree the shoes don’t work and the hair is too flat, but I LOVE the dress.  I think its perfect for her.

  • MsOlympia

I like the clean face…she looks nice with no makeup.

  • butter nut

all effort ended when she zipped up the dress.  she gets no credit for wearing Prada, if she’s going to give up on everything else.

  • I like it. She looks positively fresh.

  • Cathy S

That dress is so very adorable. I want it. The shoes look okay in color on my computer, but I’m not crazy about the style. But she looks so cute in that dress!

  • Louise Bryan

Oh, it’s the shoes.  I was just thinking how cute the dress was and how nice it looks on her.  And minimalist on the makeup is OK for the day.  She just looks young.  But the shoes, eh, she could have chosen something better.

  • Oh, god we’ve got another TWEE on our hands.  You’re at CANNES darling.  Glam it up a bit.

  • That print reminds me of Willy Wonka’s lickable wallpaper.

  • Allison Woods

I love the dress, but want to see it with RED SHOES.

    And cosmetics. Get thee.

  • Sophie Collier

On the other hand, she looks great for a job interview!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I know she looks 12. I know she looks like a tea cozy with that dress. But she doesn’t look slutty and hard.  She looks fresh and sortof happy.  And I really like those shoes.  I know, I know, but I do.

  • EEKstl

More make-up, the right jewelry and a NOT INSANE shoe choice and she would have looked fantastic (and older than 12).  Pretty dress.

  • eight_of_nine

I like that she doesn’t wear makeup.
