Cannes Watch: Marion Cotillard in Dior Couture

Posted on May 18, 2012

Miss Marion gets as French as she can possibly get, wearing Dior Couture on the French Riviera, at Cannes. She should’ve worn a beret and stuck a baguette down the front of her dress to complete the picture. We’re all about tacky, reductive national pride here at T Lo Opinions, Unlimited.

Marion Cotillard attends the “De Rouille et D’os” Premiere at Cannes in a Christian Dior couture gown paired with a white gold watch with diamonds and white gold necklace from the Chopard Red Carpet Collection.

She looks pretty killa here, no? The dress is gorgeous on her. But that’s Dior Couture. We would expect no less. We want to talk about the accessories. Chopard has been handing out the diamond-encrusted watches to the lady attendants of Cannes and we’ve seen a few here and there show up on the RC. We don’t love the idea of wristwatches paired with gowns, but we suppose hot-glueing a whole bunch of diamonds onto it really helps bump up the glam factor. She also did that thing that sounds quirky and fun but so often goes terribly wrong: she wore the necklace in her hair. And by “hair” we mean that gigantic thing pinned to the back of her head. But y’know? It really works this time. She looks pretty fabulous, which proves that when you do things that T Lo doesn’t necessarily love, like wristwatches with gowns and necklaces in hair, and you do them with style (and diamonds), you can overcome T Lo’s initial wariness and even squeeze some compliments out of them. There’s a lesson in there for everyone, wouldn’t you say?

    • CPK1

I love the dress. But then I am a huge sucker for black and navy. She looks beautiful. Not LOVING the hair and the weird necklacy-thing but still. I would like someone to give me a wristwatch with diamonds hot glued gunned to it.

      • 3boysful

I am with you, CPK1.  I am not even sure the color of the hair poof is the same as her own hair (hard to tell in photos).

        But j’adore the dress!

    • Super_Red

She looks amazing, and I kind of adore her hair. She looks like a movie star, and really, what else can we ask of her?

      • ballerinawithagun

I like the hair also. She is definitely a movie star!

        • blogless

Yes! I gasped at that first shot. It’s like the first time I saw Grace Kelly. That same elegance and THAT is a movie star.

          • Lisa

Yes!  Full on glamour and elegance – I love the way she looks here.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Actually, that giant sweet roll on the back of her head seems oddly placed, and a trifle awkward.  I do love the gown, Its charming and the details are great.  I’m not so sure about the patent belt.  I think I would have liked it more sans ceinture.

      • ballerinawithagun

Patent leather always seems to look cheap even if it isn’t!

        • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

          And very casual.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Yes, the belt is the major off-note for me.

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

      Killa, indeed!  WERQ!

      • TheOriginalLulu

Yes, definitely a WERQ for me too.

    • amywinns

Gorgeous! Classic, but with just enough of a twist to create a highly individualized presentation. Truly stylish.

And her infrastructure is flawless: perfect fit on the gown, to-die-for skin, beautifully modest but utterly polished makeup, thorougly tamed yet glamourous hair. Respect!

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

She looks outstanding, but I really believe she’d look even better without the basketball on the back of her head and with the necklace on her neck as God intended.

    • Sobaika

Fabulous overall, but the necklace in her hair seems incongruous. It looks very pretty, I just think it would be better used with a different outfit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1775610958 Debby Lovinger Teicher

And yet she is smiling as though someone near her passed wind…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1576973112 Patricia Groves Dobrowski

      Absolutely stunning.

    • TheAutisticStepmom

I LOVE that dress, but that adorable little boy in the first pictures is stealing my maternal heart.

      • MissAnnieRN

Totally agree. He’s looking at her as though she is he most exquisite human he’s ever seen. Is that her son? I don’t keep tabs on her life. So adorable.

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084733830 Kate Andrews

I think it must be, and he is so cute.

    • MzzPants

The best accessory is Little Dude in a tux.

      • calimon

I don’t mind her husband either!

    • Isadora Paiva

Even though she looks lovely otherwise, I really doný like the hair. It’s not really the necklace thing I have a problem with, but the gigantic ball of fake hair.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Heh, to fit in with the British stereotypical image of the French she’d need a striped Breton jumper (US trans sweater), a string of onions and an old fashioned push bike to go with the beret and baguette.

I think Ms. Cotillard looks fabulous and I’m not generally one for the navy blue/black combo.  Something to do with my school uniform being navy blue probably.  *shudder*

      Lovin’ the hair.

      • ballerinawithagun

I know, normally I would hate black and navy but it seems all right here, but all black would have been great since the fabric and textures are so different.

    • mjude

she looks really pretty but honestly i dont get the dress, it looks like seperates?

    • Peri7473

one of the best fitting strapless bodices we’ve seen for a while.  Overall: love!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Even with diamonds all over it that is not an attractive watch!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Gah. This is gorgeous.  I think the necklace would have looked so good with that neckline instead of in her hair.  Either way, love this look…and that little boy is precious.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Oh la laa, Marion. That’s the French Oscar-winner movie star we all fell in love a few years ago.

    • SapphoPoet

Now THAT is what a movie star should look like. Flawless. I even like the diamond-encrusted watch and would not turn one down if offered.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Patent leather is something I typically can only abide in my tux oxfords, and only because in that case its expected, and traditional.  I guess, with this ensemble, its so serene and lovely, I don’t think it needs any further embellishments to make it sing.

    • chelwi

      LOVE that dress. I covet.

      • chelwi

         Also, her eyebrows are perfect.

        • TheOriginalLulu

They really are. I’m in awe. I normally think the pencilled-in eyebrow look should be left to the drag queens, but hers are not overdone at all. She looks beautiful.

    • alyce1213

I think she looks wonderful EXCEPT for the big bump on her head. I have a thing about big ol’ head buns, they look like giant hairy tumors and make me twitch from ugliness.

I sure wouldn’t mind Chopard giving me one of those cute little diamond watches.

(Her jeune homme is adorable but his pants are too short.  Are kids fair game if parents schlep them along on the red carpet?)

    • HengRu

I love almost everything here — the dress, the jewelry, the makeup. I could even tolerate the giant ball of hair if it were a better color match for the real hair directly in front of it. It’s a warmer, redder shade of brown than her natural color.

When I read your intro paragraph about how over-the-top-French the dress was, I fully expected it to be red, white and blue. Guess I should have known you meant it in the “classic, super-chic, YSL-approved combo of navy and black” way.

I like the bejeweled watch too … but then I’m one of those people who wear a watch everywhere but in the shower.

    • janetjb

Her best accessory is the tuxedo wearing boy.

Her bodice fits perfectly, for comparison check her out back in Oct. 2010 busting out of her Christian Dior.

    • Laurie Bergman

She looks like the Queen of Serene.  I love the black and navy together, the perfect-for-her neckline, the hair treatment, and the young man on her arm.

    • ccinnc

      Very Madame Bovary.

    • nannypoo

She is really beautiful and she looks perfect here. Sure, the hair’s a bit much, and sure, if she needs to know the time she could probably find someone to consult, but holy crap she is fabulous.

    • Sisyphus .

She looks both gorgeous and happy, so I approve. Even though I’m not really appreciating the braceletwatch or the hair.

(I would, however, love to see the cray-cray purple and blue librarian uniform behind her in the first pic in more detail. That looks quite weird!)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HIZ7S2FRLC52NXARXQ4ERHNOGE Liz

I am way more interested in the necklace on the lady in the first photo!

      • SewingSiren

She’s pretty awesome head to toe.

    • Pants_are_a_must

I’m not against evoking some long-gone tradition of blinging the shit out of your hair, but that beehive is a tad too big for her head, no?

    • msdamselfly

      Love the wristwatch look

    • Beardslee

Really sharp, I agree with you about the necklace, and NO HEMLINE DRIP.  Stunning.

    • joancarol

Even the little boy is giving off oh so very French vibes. Well done.

    • SewingSiren

Love the hair. I wish i could do my hair like that, on tomorrow my fiftieth birthday.

      • DinaSews

Happy 50th Sewing Siren!  Just celebrated my 50th 2 weeks ago today.  May your birthday hold only good surprises!

        • SewingSiren

Thank you and many happy returns to you as well!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I love that dress. Love it. So old school Hollywood drama. I do wish she was wearing some earrings with a little color. Something that would pop.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I don’t mind the necklace in the hair, but the hairpiece is so big that it’s just kind of obvious, like she’s got something glued to her head. But the overall look is just stunning. The dress is fab.

    • Kayceed

When Dior introduced black and navy and black and brown as color combos way back when it was considered revolutionary. Interesting that they are still working it…. Love jewelry in the hair – have been known to pin enormous rhinestone brooches in my updo when all gussied up.

    • BeeBeauNYC

Fantastic dress, she’s so jolie, but I do not love the big hair on her.

    • PeaceBang

I say in my best Pepe le Peu accent, “Magnifique! Perfection!” She is a serious crush of mine and I love the whole thing. I think it was a WERQ.

    • bellafigura1

Vraiment, haute couture!  The black/navy combo is dead elegant.

    • Deedles

I am having a hard time staying focused on her because… WHAT THE HECK IS THE WOMAN BEHIND HER RIGHT SHOULDER WEARING??? Half of a magenta zoot suit?!

      • poggi

Oh lord, you’re right.  I think I see magenta dress pants and a vest?

    • piecesofconfetti

      Love it all.

    • Carla_Charlton

What about the patent belt, though?!?  That seems more appropriate for daytime wear.  Also, I think her hair would have looked better in a wavy bob.  That’s just my prejudice, though — I think she looks like the epitome of French when she wears her hair short and curly.

    • ChristySchiff

Who’s that kid? Please tell me her child is not already this old…

      • Dhammadina

I don’t know who that child is but I hope he is ok…

IMDb reports: Guillame Canet is father, with Marion Cotillard, of son Marcel Canet, born on May 19, 2011 in Paris, France. The internet is wonderful, esp. IMDb and TLo!

    • TheOriginalLulu

She looks incredible. Love the entire thing…especially the jewelry!

    • Anathema_Device

I like that she looks modern and timeless all at once. I love women who can wear gowns and diamonds and look like, “Oh, this old thing? Just grabbed it out of the closet.” That is true style.

    • Lina_bee

      Every detail is perfect. o/

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I dunno, I find the necklace in the hair really emphasizes the “tacked onto the back of the head” nature of the hairpiece. Feel like it could have been better utilized, maybe woven in or something. At first I totally thought the hairpiece was someone else’s head.

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

I love this because the dress & makeup accents her beautiful skin and gorgeous coloring.  I love that lip color and I want it badly.  The giant bun thing on the back of her head isn’t my favorite, but it’s pretty in 1964 beauty queen sort of way.

    • MilaXX

      Gorge!

    • Jess5628

Everything is lovely except for the small animal attacking the back of her head. Not good, not good at all.

    • Susan Crawford

She looks beautiful, and from that satisfied little half-smile, she knows it. I especially liked the accessorizing: clutching a small boy’s hand is genius. I expect we will see more child-accessories on the carpets soon.

    • Dr. Derf van der Derf

I like the dress, hate the hair.

    • CassandraMortmain

So beautiful – so very beautiful.  I’ve always loved black and navy, when done right, and it’s certainly done right here.  I also love evening watches so the Chopard blinged-out watch is fine by me.   I even sorta like the hair.  She looks just about perfect.  Oh, to have a life where one could wear Dior couture and Chopard diamonds…

    • Aurumgirl

I’d take a hot glued Chopard any day, too.

    • ChaCha_70

She’s stunning – I want her perfectly flawless skin most of all. damn. *seething with jealousy*

    • Zippypie

      Damn, she looks gorgeous!

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I love the hair ornament. She looks fabulous.

    • BrightsideSusan

Some women know when to break the rules.

    • EEKstl

      Magnifique!

    • AudreysMom

I’m distracted by her earlobes. Is it really possible she’s never pierced her ears?

    • granddelusion

She looks good. I’m not crazy about the hair. Who’s the kid?

    • granddelusion

And, she looks a tad smug. Not that she hasn’t earned it, but smugness is rarely attractive.

    • marilyn

      Beautiful!

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

      She takes my breath away.

    • ccm800

Those eyes. She is such an unusual beauty, her face is riveting. Working the hell out of pure sophisticated glamor.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

oh my god she looks perfect.

    • greyhoundgirl

Would have given it a WERQ.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sierra-Delta/100003182924700 Sierra Delta

When my hair was long enough to pile atop my head, the bottom never matched the top (I assume because it was older hair which had had more exposure to the elements).  I guess I’m not surprised then that Marion’s gigantic pouf isn’t a perfect color match.

I dislike watches with evening wear, too.  I enjoy the pretense that I’m having such a fab time when I’m gussied up that the correct hour and minute are irrelevant to my enjoyment.

But then my watch has a leather strap and no diamonds anywhere in sight.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

now that’s how you rock a sweetheart neckline.  i don’t even care that it’s black.  the midnight blue skirt intensifies her already deep blue eyes.  a true french beauty.  i adore the hair, necklace included.

your comment on the baguette reminds me of a little anecdote. a friend of mine’s mother was having an affair with her interior designer whose name was jacques francais.  sitting at the family dinner table, where jacques was a guest, my friend remarked “isn’t that like being named joe american?”  totally off-topic, excuse me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1355527007 Rain Jezek

She looks amazing, except that her smile got smashed onto her mouth somehow. Aside from that, gorgeous.

    • guest2visits

First; I love her fashionable little date.   She looks beautiful; love the hair style for her. There’s something about the top half
of her gown that I don’t like so much; maybe the fabric is not looking right.

    • Louise Bryan

…. which proves that when you do things that T Lo doesn’t necessarily love, like wristwatches with gowns and necklaces in hair, and you do them with style (and diamonds), you can overcome T Lo’s initial wariness and even squeeze some compliments out of them. There’s a lesson in there for everyone, wouldn’t you say?
Obviously, diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but I already knew that.

    • TomBord

how do u say frumpy in french?

    • quiltrx

That dress is so fabulous…pure elegance.  And her son (I’m assuming) looks like a tiny Paul Bettany!

    • GTrain

I am such a fan of hers and I love this dress.

    • TLoFanBoy

A lipstick jerking this way and that, and we’ve got Tammie Brown, amirite? First thing I thought of, I cannot lie.

    • TieDye64

Looking lovely and elegant. WERQing the glamour.

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      True movie star look!

    • OneTwoThreeFashion

      cute lil’ boy too!

    • bluefish

Beautiful from head to toe.  She looks like the famous John Singer Sargeant portrait.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Who is the angry french man dressed as a woman to the right of her in the first picture?

      • Ksagun13

Hilarious!  And I want a closer look at the woman just behind her, to the left in the photo with the magenta skirt.  Intriguing.

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Dr Skylaser

Noooooo I hate both this hair and the necklace in this hair.

    • formerlyAnon

Hair (with accessory) works beautifully. Would like the dress more if the top did not rumple over her hips as if the skirt is too wide for it to like properly.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

I would have loved to have seen some dangly diamond earrings. Is she self-conscious about her teeth or something?

    • IAmJ

I couldn’t be trusted to bitch here because I love her.

    • http://www.glenrayjewellers.co.uk/ Gemstone Rings

Wow,beautiful watch.I love this post.Keep it update in future too.
