Cannes Watch: Kristen Stewart in Balenciaga

Posted on May 24, 2012

We tease K Stew a lot for being a grumpy girl most of the time, but there’s a reason designers scramble over each other to get her to wear their wares.

Kristen Stewart attends the ‘On The Road’ Premiere during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in Balenciaga.

Balenciaga Fall 2008 Shoes

Because when everything’s in place, the girl can really turn it out. What a gorgeous dress and killer pair of shoes. Not crazy about the shiny face and big hair, but the overall look is pretty damn impressive.

Terrible jewelery! I love the Cartier nail bracelet but so wrong with this stunning dress.

      • Jecca2244

Agreed on wrong place, wrong time for the juste un clou bracelet. for what it costs it still feels like it should be worn casually.

      • 3boysful

Agreed.  I think that’s her “I’m gonna edgy-up this frou-frou gown” thing.  The necklace (? or is it a tat?) is awful as well.

      • Jen M

Kristen doesn’t wear any borrowed jewelry, only items she owns or has been given. Most of her jewelry has significant meaning. She keeps it simple that way.

    • Charlotte

Stunning! This is the best I’ve ever seen her, perfect dress & shoes and she doesn’t look like someone has forced her to be there. A+

      • jtabz

Ditto this. I’ve never seen her look so pretty …  I think the dark details on the light dress really punctuate the contrast between her hair and skin color.

        • Spicytomato1

Yes…you described what’s working to a T. She’s perfect from head to toe.

          • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I could not agree more. She looks really good. I covet those shoes. And the legs to do them justice.

        • Charlotte

Exactly, the dress plays up the contrasts between her pale skin and dark hair to perfection.

    • J D

This looks like what I imagine Helena Bonham Carter would’ve worn to her prom.  DO NOT LIKE.

    • jw_ny

She looks pretty fantastic.  Usually she looks awkward in formal wear…not here, she looks comfortable.  I actually don’t mind the “big hair” (not really that big, imo) and I especially don’t mind it over the one shoulder (usually hate that look.)…however, it does look kinda ratty from behind. Her skin looks flawless….great shoes too.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Is she actually SMILING in the first photo? Perhaps it’s because this look is so gorgeous even she can’t make stinkface about it for the whole photo session.

    • NC_Meg

Girl, your outfit could cover a few months of rent for a mere mortal and you’re sporting bed head. Do something with that hair!

    • Imasewsure

Gotta agree about the hair a bit but it looks true to her and the overall look is great to me. Dressed up without playing dress up… and I want those shoes

    • butterflysunita

Wow, this is the best I’ve ever seen her look.  And what a beautiful dress.

    • Sobaika

Meh. That dress is way too stiff.

      • mshesterp

I’m with you.  It seems so heavy.  I think she looks good, but not great.  I feel like someone else could pull that dress off better.  The shoes are FIERCE, though.  And great legs, KStew!

      • calimon

I think it looks too heavy for such a high slit.

    • Teri

When I saw the fourth pic I squealed, “GET SOME!” I appreciate that she can give us movie star from time to time.

    • Heather Smith

THOSE are some kick-ass shoes……and for her being a “chucks and dirty jeans” sort of girl with her street style, I’m always impressed that she can pull of the heels as well as she does……

    • Cathy S

Wow. That dress is fabulous and she looks great.

    • mozzer0906

That dress and shoes are fantastic.  IN girl, IN.

    • Jessica O’Connell

As always HATE the hair and don’t like her. Still, the dress and shoes are freakin’ fabulous.

    • formerlyAnon

Lovely dress & she doesn’t eff it up. Not convinced she really sells it either. The girl just can’t seem to emote an iota of star power, at least not for me.

And I do think that 87 out of the last 90 slit skirts I’ve seen would have been improved by shortening the slit just a bit. That side view makes me think “beach cover up” not “sultry.” And definitely NOT “elegant” which is what something in that fabric ought to be screaming.

    • Kiltdntiltd

Best she has ever looked! Brava Girl!

    • suzq

She’s striking the Angelina Jolie leg pose.

      • egl48

Except, unlike Jolie, she has nice legs.

        • formerlyAnon

          She has GREAT legs.

    • AuntieAnonny

It kinda looks like it’s on somewhat sideways, but I’ll allow it. It’s a nifty surprise.

Wish she had nicer jewelry, however.

    • Lina_bee

I love the embroidered overlay, but I’m unhappy with the way the lining fabric drapes. It doesn’t seem to move with her very well at all. But the fit is great. I don’t mind her artfully touseled hair, since it seems she’s contractually obligated to deliver it. The nearly-bare face is a reminder of just how young she still is, though. /ambivalent feelings.

    • SusiePamudji

Love this look. Dress is so gorgeous. Wish she did something different with the hair, but it’s a minor quibble.

    • RebeccaKW

Meh.  The dress is great, the shoes are TO DIE, but they are doing all the work.  She’s bringing nothing to this party.

    • Beardslee

I like the dress and it’s nice seeing her look rested but I don’t love the accessories.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I would just love to see her with an up do…all that hair is just too much with this fabulous dress.

    • prettybigkitty

Is it a prerequisite that starlets must agree to stand with a leg out and akimbo on the red carpet before designers give them a dress with a high leg slit to parade?

    • MsKitty

If the side slit wasn’t too high the dress would be perfect.  First decent pair of shoes I’ve seen in your posts today.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

who is teaching these people to stand w/ their legs stuck out this way? it always looks awkward. i’d think they were trying to find some less painful way to stand but horribly painful shoes existed long before today & nobody ever stood like this. not to mention i cant imagine this stance helps much. not to mention even more that i think you can get yr feet botoxed [or something like it] so they hurt like they once did, no matter which shoes you happen to wear. believe me, when i had money i considered it, thats how i know this is a thing & has been for sometime.

other than that, i hate brocade & items of the brocade ilk, but she looks nice. she usually does. good profile, thats probably why.

    • blue

That dress is fabulous. perfect neckline. (Now stop the constant smirking, girl!)

    • SapphoPoet

Good girl! She looks much better here. Sleek dress with clean lines and shoes with a bit of an edge to them. She even looks awake and somewhat pleased to be there.

    • frannyprof

      She’s busting a Jolie-look-at-my-leg move

    • Erin

Hey, she doesn’t look pissed off that she’s famous.  Are you SURE it’s KStew?

Aside from my irritation at her usual attitude, I just don’t think she’s all that.  In these pics, she’s a girl in a sundress.  Meh.

    • MilaXX

Bitter kittens my kitty is sick and I have to go to the vet and say goodbye.  I’ll have to check in with you all later.

      • Anathema_Device

Oh, that is so sad. I’ve been there. I’m really, really sorry. My sincerest condolences.

      • Kevin VanOrd

Oh no. I wish you the best of luck. May your furry friend regain good health!

      • MsKitty

So sorry to hear that. Worst part of being a critter owner by far.

      • mrspotts66

i’m so sorry.  hardest thing to do for our furries.

      • kimmeister

I hope you’re just saying goodbye to the bitter kittens and not to your kitty.  (The mere thought of the latter makes me tear up.)

      • Judy_J

So sorry to hear this, MilaXX.  Thoughts are with you.

      • SapphoPoet

Oh, so sorry to hear that, MilaXX. Wishing your kitty a gentle journey. Thoughts are with you.

      • Allison Woods

         :/ sorry Mila.

      • Call me Bee

Oh no!  Hope Kitty is ok…sending good thoughts!

      • formerlyAnon

Sorry. Hugs to you for being a brave & loving cat mom.

      • SewingSiren

    • Kevin VanOrd

I just–I just can’t. It doesn’t matter what she wears: she looks like she’s trying, and failing, to suppress just how tired of everything and everyone she is. No matter how pretty her dress is, her expressions says, “I shouldn’t have bothered.” And there’s nothing beautiful about that. “Indifferent attitude” is always an “out.”

    • Anathema_Device

I love that dress and think she looks really good in it. I would have like to have seen a more polished hair style, but the messy thing is her schtick.

    • Lisa Dugan

She looks gorgeous, happy, and comfortable.  The shot is making her look like she’s sticking her leg out but she’s either just walking or it’s the side angle.  She didn’t pull a Jolie that I could see.

    • Little_Olive

Not in love with the stiffness of the dress. If it was flowy, it’d be way better.

    • mrspotts66

      she still looks bored.
dress is okay.  i agree with a pp that it would be better with a little flow to it.

    • kimmeister

I don’t even see that she’s doing the Jolie pose, since from the front you wouldn’t be able to see her leg at all.  It’s just that the camera angle is exactly where the slit is, which can’t help but be open unless she were to stand ramrod straight with her feet together.
The place where her pendant is touching her body makes me want to gag though.

    • marilyn

I think that is a matronly dress.  The monster slit up the side does not save it.  She is a gorgeous girl, and this ages her.

    • Judy_J

Nice to see the girl crack a smile, but I don’t think that dress is especially flattering on her.  From the back, it looks like a loose sack.

    • Carla_Charlton

She really can look gorgeous when the dress, etc. are well-suited to her.  Agree on this.

    • MoHub

I was fine with it until I saw the giant slit.

    • MandyJane

Wow, didn’t think it was possible for her to look that good.

    • nannypoo

It’s a dress and a pair of shoes that she had nothing to do with. Any thin, young celebrity could wear this as well. The only things unique to her are her messy hair and the fact that she apparently did not give enough of a shit to put on some appropriate jewelry.

      • minnye

That’s the thing about her. It’s always obvious she’s “styled” – I know most of them are, but she looks like she’s off an assembly line. I hate to pile on, I sympathize with shyness & awkwardness and all. But the girl has no presence. Maybe the messy hair and no jewelry are the stylist’s attempt to inject some realness or her own personality or something.

    • msdamselfly

I think she does nothing good for the clothes here

    • EditKitten

Is it weird to say that I love how she wears a good heel? Man, I’d kill for her legs and how she poses them.

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

I don’t mind the big hair in some of the photos, but from the flatter side it just looks unkempt. Killer dress though.

    • LambeeBaby

Meh. I don’t think she is any more “fantastic” than about 140,000 other 25 year old women who are thin and apathetic. The dress is pretty, probably better in person.

    • granddelusion

She looks great, but also very uncomfortable in those “killer” shoes.

    • iolantherosa

I literally did not recognize her in the first picture, she looks so happy and relaxed and, dare I say it, kind of sweet. –Robin

    • Allison Woods

Loved it from the front…but then scrolldown fug on the big slit and the dopey racer back. Blech.

    • doodle_bug

Does she EVER brush her hair?

I have no dog in the KStew fight as I have literally never seen a single movie of hers (until Hunstmen comes out), but the girl constantly looks like she just rolled out of bed, had a cig and coffee, took a dump and put on a $5,000 gown.

    • Violina23

Wow, when she smiles she can be quite pretty!

    • Violina23

Wow, when she smiles she can be quite pretty!

    • lonepear

Gorgeous dress, and I think its coloring looks great with hers. I love how the necklace sits deep in that plunging neckline; the effect probably only works on very slim, small-busted ladies.

    • AWS

    • skadi1

I wonder if the fact that she looks so good is related to the fact that this is one of the rare times she’s smiling-ish in more than one picture. Gorgeous dress, fab shoes, blah hair. I understand the hate for the up-do, but his dress deserved more than beach hair.

    • Call me Bee

OK–I’ll admit she looks OK here (though that slit is creeping toward streetwalker country…) But I saw KS on the Graham Norton show last week and I like her even less than before, which was not at all, so I am not objective by any means and she will never look good to my eye.

      • MilaXX

She looked awful on Graham. She should have just worn jeans.

    • altalinda

Mmmmmm, no.  The shoes are great, but the dress, not so much.

    • MilaXX

She looks good. I wish she had done her hair in a bun and the slit was a bit least , but she’s either gotten some rest or a new makeup artist because her face looks brighter and there are no dark circles under her eyes.

    • Vera

Not a KStew fan, but she’s wearing that dress well.

    • malvernite

she’s growing on me, to the point i’m now willing to give her a pass on her fashion. she’s not as surly looking as in the past, but she doesnt come across as smiley fakey either. she seems to be getting more comfortable with herself and her life, and i find im judging her fashion based on how natural she appears in the clothes rather than the fit or style of the outfits. which is probably not a terribly rational way to view fashion.  maybe she’s feeling better now that she’s doing a film that’s NOT twilight.

    • Alyson Lamble

It’s a fantastic dress that is utterly wasted on the woman wearing it.

    • enid soto

I covet those shoes so hard. She looks great, though I don’t know what she has against makeup and hair styling. She always looks like she had nothing done.

    • chelwi

      LOVE the shoes!

    • rawrgrowlrawr

Who is the guy with the bow-tie? Because I’d like to know him intimately.

    • Susan Crawford

Now THAT dress is what haute couture is all about. Syunning. The shoes are shut-it-down fabulous, but I would have gone with better jewelry – a pave emerald cuff, for example, and a more controlled hairstyle, but it’s Kristen, after all.

    • kikisayshi

      Hot shoes!

    • bitchybitchybitchy

She looks more at ease in the Balenciaga, and it is quite a dress. Love the shoes!

    • eight_of_nine

She actually looks great here!  I like the big hair on her; she has such sharp features that the big hair softens her up a bit.

    • Sisyphus .

I love those shoes! And the dress, even if the fabric is very heavy seeming.

Now is that a necklace necklace or another one of those scary “boob chains” like from a few pictures ago? Hrm.

    • Aurumgirl

All due respect, boys, but I don’t agree that “there’s a reason….”  I have more than enough reason to believe they do it because they know she’s a big deal in Hollywood right now, through luck, straight-to-kid marketing, and connections alone.  So anyone like her will be chased after to wear whatever they have to sell.  I don’t want to come across as though I despise the girl, cause I don’t:  she is just so painfully presence-free anywhere she makes an appearance that it must feel like an ordeal to be a designer forced to put her/his wares on her back.  Slouchy, grouchy, poochy, messy, it’s always off.  Here she’s awkward looking from top to toe because of bad posture and cliche posing.   And I don’t understand why no one will help her!  Stand up straight, throw the shoulders back, remember we don’t need to see a crotch to react to your image, and smile, ffs!  This pretty dress is wasted on her.

    • FlamingJune1967

Her face is strategically shiny to enhance her cheekbones.  I really love this look on her and those shoes are indeed killer!  Only thing I don’t like is the hair tucked behind her ear.  I wonder if that was on purpose or if she did it without thinking?

    • RzYoung

I love this dress, she’s got killer legs

    • Inger Merete Hobbels

just felt a need to add this: I am a film journalist currently at
Cannes, I was at the press conference for “On the Road” yesterday, and
Stewart made a wonderful impression on all of us. She came off as
talkative and engaging, speaking at length and with emotion about a role
which she had obviously thought a lot about. Her openness was all the
more impressive considering what circus show she has been living for the
      past couple of years.

Dress: A little stiff, but very, very pretty.

    • lilibetp

OMG!  She looks like a girl!

    • JimMcC

Blah blah blah she looks great (I mean it), but COME ON PEOPLE: more important issue! Who is the tall drink of water to her right in the first picture, and how can I marry him?

    • Susi R

      She stole Angelina’s leg.

    • Susi R

      She stole Angelina’s leg.

    • lovelyivy

She looks tremendous. Too bad about the hair and the attitude, as usual, but it does not take away from the fact that this look suits her in every way. She looks chic and comfortable if infuriatingly unimpressed!

    • quiltrx

I actually love her big hair, and the dress and shoes are perfect.  A little powder could have made this a WERQ!

    • Ashley

    • vaughn75

Here’s the thing: she’s  NOT a grumpy girl most of the time!  You have bought into that stereotype like that rest of the ignorant people out there who can’t wait for her to fail or base their opinions of her off of airport pics when the paparazzi are screaming God knows what to her and tipping over her luggage cart. Nice of you to acknowledge when she gets it right but enough of the rest of the bs.

      • Tom and Lorenzo

        Lighten up, fangurl.

    • marlie

I love the dress. I think it’s absolutely beautiful! It even manages to negate the oft sourpuss expression she has on her face. The shoes are just right, too.

The hair is the same as it always is (meh).

    • BazoDee

This is the best she’s ever looked. Pretty much a WERQ

    • guest2visits

Wrong hair for this dress. Most of the time I think her tossed mane is just fine, as is. But this material seems to require
something sleek and swept up; or down and sleekly polished.

    • Monabel

What a lovely dress, if only all the seams had been sewn.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Beautiful dress on a beautiful girl, and she didn’t spend all night sticking her leg out of the slit. Props.

    • lilazander

Whatever she wears, she looks like she needs a good scrub in the shower; I cannot stand her hair. The dress does not impress me in any way, but I love the heels.

    • Valdri8

I could not disagree more.  I think she makes everything she wears look frumpy and stolen from her Mom’s closet. She is a multimillionaire teen – could she just look the teeniest bit happy or at least not disgruntled?  My Mother would have locked me in a room with that face until I had a “better attitude”.

    • Mirakel9

Meh, curtain dress. Her hair looks silly here…make an effort, don’t just roll out of bed.

    • oohsparkley!

I think it’s a WERQ!  Her legs looks killer through that slit and awesome shoes.

    • Oem Fty

      haha, nice

    • golspie

At last. When she’s not posing or, at least photographed from an angle that discounts her obviously grudging pose, she comes as cross as fresh and naturally lovely.

    • Fatima Siddique

Love everything from the neck down. Somebody please get this girl a comb.

    • CrazyFeminist

I’m not a superfan or anything but DAYAM that bitch has got some legs!

    • Lisa

I’m normally super critical about her, because she’s not fashiony, yet they’re always trying to stuff her into these great looks.  But I can’t criticize – she looks beautiful, she finally did it!

    • Emily

Wow.  She looks so beautiful and comfortable.

    • kvlm

The styling is death.  And there’s something about the color on her I’m not uber-crae crae about BUT it is gorgeous.
