Cannes Watch: Karen Gillan

Posted on May 18, 2012

Amelia Pond, we luvyatadeth and we will cry like little baby girls when you leave Doctor Who, but that does not mean we can go easy on you now, dear.

Everything’s fine – or as fine as a sheer skirt over a mini can get – until you hit the ankles. No way do those sandals go with this dress. They’re way too casual and way too bright. We can totally get behind flat sandals, especially at Cannes; just not these flat sandals. She’s sporting a pretty natural-looking face, so if she wanted to go that sort of ethereal, beachy, pixie girl route, then maybe a light brown or white sandal – MUCH more delicate than these look-at-me’s – would have been a better choice. Along with a cuff or a necklace; maybe a nice pendant, we’rejustsaying.

And we hate to be total bitches here (HAHA), but it’s the Cannes Film Festival. A pedi was in order.

Total scrolldown fug (TM The Fug Girls).

      • NinaBoo

My eyeballs exploded on my keyboard.  Good thing I know where F-U-G are on the keys…

      • lamamu

Totally. This girl was not in the least bit prepared for CANNES. How can she expect to roam the red carpet properly with the likes of the Swinton’s and Kruger’s in those monstrosities, which need to be burned? (They look capable of spontaneously combusting on her feet. Remove with care.) Jimmy Choo must surely have a tent set up just off the red carpet.

      • Lisa

Haaah!  That’s perfect, and totally right!  Fug to the F-U-G! The sandals look like something I would have bought out of a bin in a beach shop on the Ocean City boardwalk in 1985.

    • candice tobin

somehow the worst part is how BIG all those straps on the sandal are. silly Pond! i think a silver sandal would’ve looked nice too.

      • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

those shoes look 4,000 sizes too big for her delicate little feet.

      • ampg

It’s like she wrapped her feet in caution tape.

I saw tweets between her and Arthur before I saw the photos and they kept talking about her having “fringe”. So when I first saw this photo, I was so confused. Then I realized that fringe = bangs in the UK.

She only finished shooting DW a few days before this. I don’t like the bangs and I don’t like the shoes.

I’ve stood next to her and she is AMAZINGLY gorgeous and this outfit does not do her beauty justice. I suspect her stylist is a Dalek.

      • MilaXX

I suspect her stylist is a Dalek.
He should be exterminated for this look.

        • DeborahJozayt

Cyber man has since deleted Dalek for poor taste.

The Weeping Angels were originally sent for the task, but couldn’t win since Daleks are incapable of blinking.

    • judith traherne

Her legs look cold and that can’t be right.

    • Sara__B

Those sandals look so dated in the neon green. They glow with a light of their own, and it’s not pretty.

    • SpcilK

Time to hire a stylist sweet pie.

    • http://twitter.com/BMoke28 Bernadette Moke

Those sandals look entirely too big on her!

    • Beardslee

      NO.  Just no.

    • sagecreek

Oh, them’s some ugly damn shoes.

    • RebeccaKW

Those shoes might be fun with a casual outfit, but not with this dress and the color is all wrong for her.  It’s really emphasizing the blue of the veins in her legs to the forefront (as a fellow pale girl, I know this pain) and making her legs look cold.

Agreed on all points! Including crying when she leaves Doctor Who. And Rory…Oh God I can’t say goodbye to Rory!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

This is like one of those nightmares you have where everyone is dressed and you’re not.  Except that in this one, you are at Cannes standing in between Marion Cotillard and Fan Bingbing in neon green sandals from Foot Solutions.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

O.k., you made me giggle SO hard, and I haven’t even heard of Foot Solutions (but I totally get the image).  I think I may giggle off and on throughout the night at this one.  Thanks!

why the hell would you want to call that much attention to  your unkempt country toes????

The shoes are gawdawful.  I don’t mind the bangs/fringe.  But I don’t like the dress either.  Looks like she wrapped a tablecloth around her waist then topped it off on top with two dinner napkins.  It’s boxy and unflattering on someone who could be so adorable.

Yikes. That is one ugly sandal.

      • Ogden1990

Which one? Left or right? I’m going with left. ;-)

        • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

Sorry, it is friday. Brain not working anymore. lol

    • MoHub

Not a fan and won’t miss her at all when she departs Doctor Who—aka The Amy Pond Show. So I have no problem with her looking totally inappropriate here.

    • granddelusion

Everything is wrong with this look. Except the hair and the makeup, which look good. But from the neck down — time to start over.

    • another_laura

No, this is just all kinds of no.  Maybe it’s because once she was a grown-up, I didn’t like Amy Pond (ducking tomatoes).

    • Jasmaree

Those sandals are so so so wrong, but I feel bad criticizing her. She seems so nice. I hate her character on Doctor Who, though. She’s always so very insensitive and selfish.

    • Lina_bee

She is so pretty and charming and photogenic…but I’d still like to send her somebody’s awesome stylist.  Hell, Cannes should provide them (and then send the bill to the press pool).

    • C. Rogers

Oh, Karen. I just find her about the most darling thing in the world, and I can’t help but laugh when she turns up in something like this. She looks radiant aside from the caution tape feet.

    • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Way to look cheap when every camera in the world is on you.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1396777506 Christin Pardy-Nosenchuk

O_o whoa.  Someone should have stopped her before she left the house.

    • Anathema_Device

Oh Karen, hell no! What a record-scratch moment those sandals created as a I scrolled down. I am happy to volunteer to take her shopping and for a pedicure. Maybe Matt Smith could join us for lunch?

    • boomchicabowwow

I’m in my cube at work and I literally *jumped* when I got to the bottom of the picture.  That’s a first….scared by hidious sandels…..

    • kirkyo

I think y’all actually went to easy on this one for once. That slit is bugging the crap out of me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Amelia Pond! The entire Tardis at your disposal and you show up in THAT? For shame.

    • drdirection

      Oh, my eyes!!!

    • Maluca

I cannot overcome the fact that those shoes don’t fit. AT. ALL. (and yes, they’re ugly and don’t go with the outfit)

    • Cathy S

Those sandals are horrible. And she’s washed out in that color, The dress is cute though and so is she.

    • HM3

You’ll notice, in the second-to-last photo, that the sandals are also way too big for her feet…making this a bad decision in more ways than one.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

If they had only been a very pale green, it would have worked.

    • msdamselfly

I like the shoes–they match the grass and add youthfulness

    • kimmeister

It appears to be a sheer skirt UNDER a mini.  Blech!

    • egl48

This is exactly the kind of outfit my elementary school daughter would try to wear to Easter services.  She’d especially love the shoes.

    • Celandine1

I won’t even subject people to my feet in sandals going to the grocery store without a pedi.

    • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

Is it a sheer skirt over a mini or a mini over a sheer skirt? Not that one is better than the other, but I think it’s the latter.

    • TSkot

I’d put this in the running for one of the worst looks of the year.  Head to toe.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I think they seared the astigmatisms from my corneas.

    • Qitkat

I had no idea she is that pale naturally, I am in awe.

The dress is silly, but what really disturbs me are those sandals, no, not the color. Lookit how they are so HUGE on her feet! Some of those straps are not even touching her skin. How could she possibly walk in them? Of course she’s not a mere mortal who would have to shuffle, but still, even a Time Lord’s sidekick can’t really walk without her feet touching the ground.

    • pepper76

      Somebody needs a stylist!

    • Megan Patterson

I think those might be polish colours that are making her toes look like they have gangrene?

    • guest2visits

Pretty face and a gorgeous head of hair, but I don’t like anything else in this picture.  Well, the background looks pretty swank.

    • jilly_d

GREAT HAIR!!  Too bad about the scrolldown fug, she looks beautiful.

    • julnyes

She usually does better than this schmatta

    • http://twitter.com/yankeefoxtrot Alex McGeagh

These are among the skeeviest toenails I have ever seen. Bitch, please. You have a huge hit of a TV show. You can afford a $30 pedicure. It ain’t rocket science!

    • http://twitter.com/poptartsjen Pop Tarts Jen

My exact thoughts as I scrolled down:
      Amy Pond!
      Sorta pretty dress!
      Well, kinda pretty, anyway.
      Yeah, OK, it’s not horrid.
OH MY GOSH WHAT ARE YOU WEARING ON YOUR FEET!?

    • alyce1213

Oh the dress and shoes are damn ugly, but look at her beautiful English skin.  Girl knows how to stay out of the sun.  Envy.

    • http://www.thirteen.org/downton-abbey/category/the-downton-dish/ Gotham Tomato

Whenever I see those day-glo colors I have an 80’s flashback (& not in a good way).

      –GothamTomato

    • Dan_In_NYC

You forgot to mention that her hair looks like a bad wig.

    • Pennymac

I am cringing not only at the uglieness of the sandals, but at the blister inducing vibe I got from them. You just know that those straps rub in the worst way.

    • TieDye64

She’s so darn cute, but those shoes should never have seen the light of day. And never with that dress. Ick.

    • watchmeboogie

Holy shit, with bangs she looks like Ellie Kemper.

    • Laylalola

See, this is what I keep thinking Ellie Kemper could morph into if she’d shuck The Office character on the red carpet.

    • Sarah Thomas

Sorry, kids. That’s what the coolest girl at the party looks like. If you weren’t talking to her, you’d want to be.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=630168379 Brian G. Cox

Come along, Pond. The universe may end (again) today, but that’s no reason to lack coordination. Do try to keep it together.

    • fursa_saida

She always seems infinitely prettier on film than in photos to me.

    • Zippypie

She looks washed out and meh.  And she’s beautiful on film.  Those sandals are a tragedy.

    • Jecca2244

i would have dressed so much better than this if i was in Cannes. pick me!

    • TheOriginalLulu

On the plus side, her hair and skin are beautiful and she’s WERQing those difficult-to-pull-off heavy bangs.

    • mozzer0906

Hating everything really.  The white looks bad against her skin, the sandals are just NO.

    • http://twitter.com/TheSnickleboom Snickleboom

Amelia Pond!  Get your coat!  And some new shoes, sweetie.

    • Kriky

She looks so chic from the ankle up!
