Cannes Watch: Jane Fonda in Atelier Versace

Posted on May 17, 2012

Early morning services will begin with Miss Jane Fonda, as she delivers the homily.

Jane Fonda attends opening ceremony during the 65th Cannes Film Festival in an Atelier Versace gown paired with Chopard diamond earrings and ring from the Animal World collection.

Atelier Versace Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

Miss Fonda is serving it up on a silver fucking platter, and she would like to inform any haters to suck it, because they’re never going to look this good when the first digit’s a seven.

This might have been a WERQ, because Miss Jane certainly is WERQing the shit out of it, but darlings, we simply canNOT sign off on that much illusion netting. And hey, we completely understand why a lady of a certain age might not want to wear a strapless gown, but our response to that is, then don’t wear a strapless gown. Turning a strapless gown into a formal ice-dancing costume is not the answer, dear. Why not just choose a colored sheer instead of trying – and failing – to match your skin tone?

What is she wearing under that gown?
And where in the hell can I get one?

    • Jessi03

If you find out, please let me know.

      • ccinnc

And I’d like to know who did her work.

I’m not loving that color on her – wonder how the dress would look in black w/the sheer netting?

        • Spicytomato1

I started thinking about black, but then I arrived at the same conclusion as TLo…she needs to go with a different gown. I’m sure she had umpteen choices, so it seems odd that she didn’t go with one that didn’t need such a major, semi-bizarre-looking, modification.

        • It’d look like something Sophia Loren wears. Which is to say fabulous.

    • Amen. Her body looks fan-frickin-tastic!

  • elleg929

Between the hair and the iceskater netting, this is a big ol’ mess.

    • The hair is a little bit 80s Tina Turner, but it suits her! No excuses for the netting though…

  • Is that really Jane Fonda? I did not recognise her!

    • Carlodog

Well, that’s what she looks like now.  A plastic facsimile of someone who can’t age gracefully.  I don’t know if I can even agree that she looks amazing.  It’s just wrong, somehow.

      • FlamingJune1967

I don’t know.  I just got finished looking at a bunch of photos taken at our family reunion, and I’m beginning to think that the whole “aging gracefully” thing is a line made up by the same guy who thought up the “glow of pregnancy'”!

  • For a second I thought that was wrinkled skin in that second picture. Imagine my relief that it was only illusion netting. It’s a wonderful dress, but I think she needs to send it to Halle Berry, illusion netting free.

  • I think she is wearing a colored sheer, the same color as her dress, which is too close to her skin tone.  Was thinking this would look good in a some shade of green, then realized that would complete the reptilian vibe.

  • She is effing amazing.  And my first thought was, the cheap shot to try and get us to think that all that skin above the bodice, and on your arms was still creamy smooth was a fail, straight out of the box. Sweetheart, you are 70 something and awesome incarnate, but get a grip, even for you, some things are no longer quite in your realm any longer.

  • Whatevs.  She’s 70, she’s amazing…I say WERQ it, Ms. Fonda!

  • Time for her to go easier on the foundation makeup. It’s just accentuating the wrinkles. Learn to love them, Jane, and they will not be as pronounced.

    • megohd

You just put your finger on what is bothering me about her look.

    • schadenfreudelicious

exactly, and a lighter hand with the eye makeup, less really is more after a certain age…

  • I love that her hair matches the movement of the gown!

  • The illusion netting is really weird, I was wondering why her arm wrinkled like that. Other than that, it’s hard to believe how good her body looks, better than the model’s bod, in my opinion.

  • Ya gotta be kidding, I demand this be upgraded to a WERQ! If anyone is allowed to employ netting it is Mizz Fonda! The woman is 74 – if she wants to look hot and wear some ice dancer-esque sleeves, I say GET IT GURRRL!

  • gabbilevy

Nope, girlfriend looks better than stars a THIRD her age. I have no complaints. Well, maybe the dandelion hair. But face+bod+dress=killin it.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

When you can pull wearing a Versace gown at the age of 74, then I say you are WERQing it.

    • S**T, I didn’t look that good at 37 (i.e., half her age)

  • She is entitled to a little fabric.   WERQ! Jane Fonda.

  • SapphoPoet

Her face looks very odd, like it might melt or something and her hair looks really chaotic. I do wish the gown had had a proper top and sleeves instead of all that netting. Having said all that, she does have a hellava figure and she knows how to pose.

  • PastryGoddess

Dayum…Ms. Jane is WERQing it all over the place.  That illusion netting is horrific but I don’t mind ’cause this is fantastic

  • I have a feeling Ms. Jane could have worked or WERQED that dress without the hideous illusion netting. Her body is crazy. In fact if those old videos of hers are the reason she has that bod in her 70’s, I off to find them STAT.

From the netting down, that dress fits her like a shimmery glove and she should be damn proud to show it off. And while the hair and makeup are perhaps too much, overall I think she looks spectacular.

  • She is ROCKING it and looking fabulous.  Love it!!

  • argonauticos
    Now about that hair…

  • My thoughts exactly….I hope to remotely be pulling a Jane Fonda when I’m in my 70’s.

  • egl48

    Good for her!!!

  • miagain

Wipe that eye makeup off, Missy, and then we might have something!

  • lordandtaylor

    Come on kids…she looks great.

  • Judy_S

The netting is upsetting, and if it were a color it would be worse. I vote against the strapless gown. Or else let the skin wrinkles show honestly–that’s better than staring at the illusion wrinkles.

    • Spicytomato1

She could have pulled it off without the netting if she’s worn a shrug or a wrap of some sort. Maybe?

    • I would now like you to write a poem, please, incorporating the line “the netting is upsetting”.

      • Judy_S

Jane Fonda in this bright gown
Is just the toast of the the town
        But the netting
        Is upsetting
And ‘d be worse if pink or brown.

      • Linzenberg

         “The netting
        is upsetting!”

        Bitter Kittens
        moan and cry.

“We would have liked it better
        without that smokey eye.”

        But while keyboards
        type and clack away

        – Pews in the TLo Church –

One thing we all agree on:
Miss Jane is here to WERQ.

      • Spicytomato1

        Glam gown, however
        The netting is upsetting
        Consider real sleeves

(Edited because haiku format fell apart when submitted)

      • butterflysunita

        Jane Fonda Haiku

        Though Jane is divine
        The netting is upsetting
        We weep at the sight.

  • MoHub

The problem is that no matter how many facelifts, boob enhancements, and tummy tucks one has, the neck always gives it all away. I’d like it better if she owned her age naturally.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Yes indeedy.  I remember when I was a kid, there was a story arc in one of the newspaper comics (probably Little Abner) about this character who had a facelift in order to snag a husband and right before the “I do’s”, the facelift … fell — looked pretty much like Ms Fonda does here.  (And to be clear, I’m a huge fan.  I just think it is sad that she didn’t choose to age au naturale.

      • Carla_Charlton

Agree completely.  I have to think she’d be amazingly beautiful without all the work — I mean, look at her arms–they’re slim and shapely!  But I find the shiny face with its little pull areas and the torpedo boobs disconcerting.  What about the shoes?  Open-toed shoes (as opposed to sandals) are dowdy and just not right for the red carpet.  All that being said, she knows that she’s a star and dresses the part, thank goodness!

    • snich11

Yes, the neck AND THE HANDS Jane!

    • gubblebumm

neck and hands, her hands look like a 70 year old woman’s hand

  • if only i looked so good now.  *sigh*

would a simple “necklace” attached to the illusion netting have offset the horridness any?

    • MilaXX

I think it would have only added to the ice skater effect. I agree with TLo and sheer colored netting would have been better.

  • EEKstl

Great thought, TLo.  You’re absolutely right.  Had the sheer matched the color of the dress more closely it would have been a home run.  That said, the woman BROUGHT it!  I hope I look half that good at her age.

  • MilaXX

She looks good. Sadly the illusion netting doesn’t hold up under close scrutiny, but still an outstanding look.

  • Hetha Innis

Totally agree, T-Lo! The heavy black eye make-up isn’t too hot, either. But damn I’d love to look like that in a dress and I’m 30 years her junior!

  • BeeBeauNYC

Totally agree with TLo’s analysis. I have to say the photograph of the model is striking – completely gaspworthy.

  • J MN

I think she looks fabulous!  74, didn’t realize but definitely gets a neck snap from me.  She’s owned up to having a lot of work done over the years but she’s taken good care of her body (foundation underpinnings acknowledged and notwithstanding).

Upon studying the pics super close it looks to me like Ms. Fonda may have a skin condition or just ‘age spots’ on her upper arm and slightly on her chest (3rd pic down) and may have wanted a little more coverage.  They’re still visible through what looks like a heavier illusion netting.  Certain signs of aging can’t be denied and have to be either accepted, covered or camouflaged.  She still looks amazing.

    • greyhoundgirl

      I vote for accepted.

  • BayTampaBay

    Sorry Dudes I must disagree!

This a WERQ because she is WERQing the hell out of it. By “IT”, I mean the gown, the pose, the facial expression and the moment.  I want to go to whatever party she is going to.

  • Olggie

You guys are buggin! Kristen Stewart on her best day doesn’t look ths good. 74! WERQ!

  • Deedles

I think if she wasn’t wearing all of that eyeliner, she would look like the Jane Fonda we all know (with the exception of the one where it’s clearly an odd angle and overexposed by the flash). Sure, she’s had some work done, but she needs to be a poster child on how to age gracefully in Hollywood! Sun damage and wrinkles… LOVE IT!

  • greyhoundgirl

She has had work done on her face BUT she still lets those beautiful expressive lines show around her eyes (and elsewhere). I had a great-aunt (Hollywood psychotherapist to the stars) who at 80, with no work, looked a lot like Jane Fonda (face, not body) but unfortunately, those are not the aging genes that I inherited!

  • GorgeousThings

That’s pretty freaking WERQ, if you ask me. The sheer illusion – eh, that’s a nit. Would it have looked better with a coordinating bolero? Maybe. But what the hell. She looks pretty freaking awesome for an old broad. I hope I look half that good at her age!

  • Lina_bee

Okay, speaking just on the dress: this is the prettiest Versace I’ve seen in a really long time. What a lovely use of pleating and geometry!  As far as La Fonda, I’m torn. On one hand I get the urges to both rock a great dress AND hide liver spots from nasty public ridicule (because people are jerks about normal evidence of aging), and she’s definitely WERQing the hell out of it. But on the other hand, there’s quite a lot of Eau de Drag in the air…and it’s distracting enough that I stop looking at her and start counting the various elements of the costume.  Joan Collins and Liz Taylor never pinged my Drag buttons, but the level of artifice here is…I don’t know.  I guess in the end I wish she’d worn something pink, sparkly, and with the same shape BUT opaque fabric in lieu of illusion netting. On the third hand, it’s nice to see her out and about regardless of what she’s wearing.

  • Patti Lever

She’s in her 70’s and looks like that! She can wear whatever she likes in my book and still look ah-may-zing!

  • MissAnnieRN

So yes. She is WERQing that shit. Illusion netting aside. But what the hell is going on with that model? Are those really her proportions? Is that photoshopped?

  • bluefish

Wowie zowie!   I so loved her in “Klute” — my dream was to have her hair and that haircut.  She’s obviously stuck in 80s-90s when it comes to the hair — but how fabulous to have that figure at 70 and to still shine so bright.  Auntie Mame meets Barbie!

  • AWS

    Statuesque and perfect.  WOW!

  • beebee10

WERQ minus points for the illusion netting (those Russian judges are such bitches to the ice dancers!). I love Ms Fonda and just look at her. LOOK! amazing.

  • What is the proper term for “pantyhose for your arms”?

    • Pennymac

  • Cathy S

Yeah, I can’t get with the illusion netting, it just throws everything off. And I don’t like her hair. Otherwise she looks fantastic. Slammin’ body and a face that looks like a real face instead of a clown mask. She’s rocking her age. I wish I looked that good and I’m only 47.

  • Anathema_Device

Agreed on the illusion netting, but damn she looks great. That dress is incredibly well suited to her body. Well done, Jane!!

  • That illusion stuff is wackadoodle. A whiff of desperation where none is called for. She is werquing her age!

  • ballerinawithagun

Hate the dress, love her. She’s talking about her love life constantly and it shows.

  • Call me Bee

Being a woman of a certain age, I thought the illusion netting on the bodice was pretty smart.  But the sleeves are not good.  Should have stopped at the shoulders.  Netting aside, though, we should all BOW DOWN!  She brought it.

  • colleenjanel

I have a feeling that most of us are far too young to appreciate what the netting does to camouflage the liver spots. If she can make it to 74 and still look that fab, I will absolutely forgive her some illusion netting.

  • piecesofconfetti

That bitch… just kidding, I’m going to go find some workout videos now so I look half that good when I’m 70!

  • i just wonder how much she’s really hiding with the illusion netting. Her arms look pretty toned and her back isn’t flabby and it doesn’t look like it’s tight or holding anything in. Do we think she really couldn’t have pulled this dress off without the illusion netting? Because I rather get the impression that she could, 70+ or not. She looks dynamite, at any rate. Nothing else bothers me, hair and makeup or anything, just the netting.

    • AnaRoW

Look at her hands. If her skin underneath the netting is anything like that, I don’t blame her for going that route.

      • snich11

        Yes–scary old lady claw hands!

  • Stubenville

Not loving the Alexis Carrington hair, but dammmmmn, Jane looks fabulous for 74. (For contrast, Joan Rivers is 78.)

  • Marian Humin

Jane can wear anything she wants! She looks incredible!

  • PeaceBang

That’s one of the most gorgeous dresses I’ve seen in a long time.

  • She is ageless. Looks amazing even with the wrinkles around her eyes!  I love that she is somewhat natural. She’s what, 100? Wish I could look that good at 40!

    • Laylalola

Really? This is the first time I really almost can’t tell from the face on this person that underneath it all is Jane Fonda.

  • marilyn

What’s with the hair?  It looks too teased and tortured, almost like a fright wig.  She has worked so hard to look great (and succeeded admirably), but why top it off with that rat’s nest of a ‘do?   She is an attractive woman and the hair should not be so 1970’s.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I was about to say something about her face not looking anything anymore like the one nature gave her until I read the bit about never looking that good if I should reach my 70s and realized that you’re right. When you’re right you’re right. Besides, she’s Jane Frickin Fonda and that alone is fabulous enough. Bravo!

  • Yeah, pantyhose on your arms is never a good look. Otherwise she looks amazing.

  • Oh, f#@#@ off… she’s over 70 and looks like that. Put that illusion netting in your pipe and smoke it, because she is KILLIN’ it!!!

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

i know she’s had a lot of work done, but 74?  she looks like a 50 year old who’s had some work done!  WERQ that illusion netting girl!

    • formerlyAnon

Well, like a 50 year old who’s spent a LOT of time in the sun (maybe Sunbelt tennis pro) and hasn’t had all the face work done that’s possible. Because she figures she’s just going to spend the next 20 years out in the sun. And promises to be better about the sunscreen.

  • Rand Ortega

Get me a Jane Fonda Workout Video– STAT!

  • rainwood1

I say WERQ.  Jane may not be dressing in an age-inapppropriate way, but good for her. She looks fantastic.

  • only 50 year meth addicts look like that to whoever said she looks like 50. Um, no she doesn’t. She looks like 74 who’s had a lot of work done. But she’s still a cool chic. Hanoi Jane will always rock. The dress is still frightening.

  • nancylee61

Ok, I don’t think that is Jane Fonda. Doesn’t look anything like what she looked like a few months ago. What is wrong with these women that they allow a surgeon to make them look like someone else?? She looks like Christie brinkley did after her plastic surgery . Something about the eyes is off and Fonda’s mouth doesn’t look like her either. I can’t even comment on the dress, it’s OK, but I don’t know who this woman is.

  • Holy Illusion Netting, Batman! So unfortunate…

  • Susan Crawford

This is a real glamour-girl gown, all right, and Fonda is a girl with the glamourous body to carry it off. But what is with that illusion netting??? I refuse to believe she couldn’t rock a strapless. Love the earrings as well, and her bad-girl spiked hair.

  • allisankelly

“Too much illusion netting” – There’s a phrase I never thought I’d utter. Love the earrings.

  • Hear, hear on the illusion netting. When you’re having difficulty working out where the dress wrinkles stop and the skin wrinkles start then you know something’s wrong…

  • giiiirrrr

Colored sheer or a shrug please.  Otherwise gorgeous!

  • suzq

Well, if it weren’t for the wrinkles in the illusion, she would have gotten away with it.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

oh but the wrinkles get kind of scary, though–for a couple of seconds [cos i did this twice], i thought she had ribs above her boobs. & that is never good.

  • guest2visits

Totally agree.  Too much net; but the rest of the gown sure fits well !
I know she’s had work, but she one of the few that still look like themselves.
(loved ‘The Morning After’ with Jeff Bridges.)

  • golspie

    Is this traitor still alive?

  • phylora

As a 65-year-old woman, this drives me crazy.  There’s a point where one stops wearing strapless (or pseudo strapless) skin-tight gowns, where one embraces one’s age and dresses accordingly.  That does NOT mean dowdy.  Jane, set an example, please.  You had it in spades when you were young, but those days are gone, sweetie.  G-o-n-e.

  • formerlyAnon

Yup. Swap the illusion netting out for a sheer – and maybe even give it a collar/edging in the dress fabric that would remind one of a necklace.

I am dubious about the hair. It’s striking, but getting close to haystack analogies.

Is it possible that she’s made of plasticine underneath that dress, and simply molded to fit? Because the fit is flawless, and it makes her look as if she has a figure a 30 year old would envy.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I could have signed off on the illusion netting if they hadn’t put SLEEVES on it – what the hell??  Too much.  OTOH, if I look 1/10th as good as she does when I turn 70, I would be jumping for joy.

  • altermyego

She is working it even though I think the dress has too much going on.

The thing I like the most is her wrinkles! Wear them with pride ladies!

  • Illusion netting or not, I would give my eyeteeth to look like her at even my age.  She brought it, bitches!  YOU tell her to lose the netting and then stand the hell back.  Who cares if she wears what the hell she wants to wear, no matter her age, if she can look this good!  I say it’s a WERQ!

  • Caaro3

We are now flying over Marlene Dietrich, age 85.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

she looks so gorgeous here i can only wish but slightly, if sincerely, that that net was rose–damn it all, just rose!–& not the color of pantyhose. cos then she’d look perfect & i would be thrilled if she did.

  • Bringin’ home the bacon.  Luv’ huh!!

  • Lola67

Wow. Slammin bod! She can wear whatever the hell she wants. I would tone done the eyeliner.

  • TieDye64

There’s not enough Spanx in the world to make my (much younger) body look like that. Yes, the illusion netting is bad, but I gotta’ give the ol’ girl her props.

  • texashistorian

Those boobs and that hair aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Keep on trucking, Jane.

  • Zippypie

“My name is Jane and these are my breasts!”  Damn, gf!  Rock on!

  • GTrain

“we completely understand why a lady of a certain age might not want to
wear a strapless gown, but our response to that is, then don’t wear a
strapless gown.” SO glad you said it! She looks good but that netting is ridic.

  • Sophie Collier

The netting ruins it sooo badly.  Otherwise, fantastic dress.  But that netting can’t be ignored.  Why oh why, Ms Jane?

  • Judih1

she is trying too hard. that dress is too young for her

  • Judy_J

God love her for letting her wrinkles show.

  • THIS is how one stands on the red carpet…the “pageant pose.”  It is a power stance that says “I know I’ve got the right stuff” versus the “I’ve got to pee” stance that screams “no confidence” and seems to be the rage.  Show ’em how it’s done, Ms. Fonda!

  • snich11

She has the OLD LADY CLAW HANDS eek! No plastic surgery can hide them apparently…just ask Madonna.

  • LittleKarnak

I do admire that she actually showed her 70-something hands….Madonna!!!!!

  • Wow, that’s impressive but she doesn’t really look like Jane Fonda anymore! Like some other amazingly fit lady yes, but not Jane Fonda. Kind of a pity.

  • greatscoutm

I too, am not digging the illusion netting, but she looks spectacular!

  • butterflysunita

I am bowing down.  Anyone who is 74 and rocking a Versace dress can wear all the illusion netting she wants.

  • boweryboy

If Jane Fonda wants to wear a strapless Versace dress with ice skater illusion netting probably attached to double reinforced Spanx and looks rocket body gorge at 74 years old I bow down to her fabulosity.

She’s Jane Fonda!  She’s a living legend! I love her (even if her face doesn’t look quite the same).

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

BOW THE FU(% DOWN!!!  And if it had been in black, with black sheer netting, well, it would have been perfection!

  • ccm800

Im giving her a pass on the netting and a GADDAM! on the assessment. She looks fierce as hell.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She does look fierce. But it’s weird to me how everybody in the same age range as Carol Burnett who used to be far more beautiful than Carol Burnett now looks like her twin.

  • gubblebumm

hate hate hate the netting…understand her wanting it, but hate hate hate

She must be wearing spanx to the max…her wasit to her hips has an odd transition

i love her, but sometimes you just gotta go Im 70

  • JaneDC

Her boobs look like the are about to take off.
