Cannes Watch: Jada Pinkett-Smith in Paco Rabanne

Posted on May 18, 2012

Far be it for us to offer any advice to the Acid Queen here, since she looks like she can kill us with her brain, but there’s a detail or two here that bother us.

Jada Pinkett Smith attends the Women In Film celebration at the 65th Cannes Film Festival in a Paco Rabanne dress.

Paco Rabanne Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Liu Wen (MARILYN)

We realize that this look is likely to not be loved by a lot of people, but we’ll just say this: sometimes, it’s best to play to your strengths. Let’s face it; Jada is an intense-looking woman. She tends to go as soft as she’s capable of for the red carpet, but it’s fun to see her strap on some Grace Jones armor for once and hit the RC looking fierce and dangerous instead of like a dutiful wife and mother, which tends to be 90% of her red carpet appearances lately. This dress isn’t for every gal, but it’s definitely for Jada.

Here are the quibbles: She should have worn a pony tail because the sleekness would have only helped the look, and she should have worn showier, more in-your-face shoes than simple black pumps.

Please don’t kill us with your brain, Your Fierceness.

I feel personally assaulted by her breasts in this dress.  is it just me?

    • Anathema_Device

Honestly, I think her breasts look assaulted by the dress.

      • Beardslee

Yes, I find this neckline on her quite anatomical but I have never been fans of dresses that precisely illustrate how the breasts are attached to the torso.

  • Frank_821

Good points. She might as well gone whole hog on the effect

  • I’d like it more if she raised the bust (?) line higher. And get rid of that sad looking bow. I also hate that color. She doesn’t even look particularly happy or comfortable in it, either.

  • SewingSiren

I love the dress, but the neckline (Very much like the one Charlize Theron was wearing yesterday) is too wide. I don’t like seeing the underboob.

  • lamamu

It’s like her body is an external representation of how tightly wound she is internally. On a serious note: in the last pic, is that a breast lump on the left side?

    • alyce1213

      Oy. It can’t be bone.

  • AudreysMom

    This just scares me.

  • Kayceed

I love a ferocious Mugler/Montana vibe, and also a deep V on ladies who can carry it off – I would have narrowed the neckline a bit, but on balance, ROWRRR!

  • Anathema_Device

You so nailed it with Grace Jones. There is something about her that looks so extremely taut and stretched. Like you could bounce a quarter a foot into the air off any part of her.

    • formerlyAnon

Though compared to the mental image of Grace Jones, she’s too bird-like to be impressive.

      • Anathema_Device

Oh yeah, totally. She’s no Grace Jones at all. I think Pinkett-Smith looks more Skeletor than bird-like. But the style of dress and color call the fabulous Grace Jones to mind.

  • ringthing

That’s a whole lot of sternum right there. Thank goodness she left off the hat.

  • Her face is several shades darker than her body.

    • I’ll say as an african american, this happens to me too… My legs/upper body are lighter than my face as well…

      • SpcilK

I think it’s more than that. The lighting is not that great and if she had a good make up artist or visited a tanning salon we would’nt even be talking about it. I go to a tanning salon to evenout my skin tone and I’m black.

      • MilaXX

Yep on those rare occasions I go somewhere fancy I apply a bit of body bronzer to the cleavage to help balance things out

    • Sobaika

That’s pretty common, and more noticeable with people of color.

  • The only thing bothering me, is that the fit of that neckline is giving her a painful looking case of squashboob.

    • Exactly! If she were a little more flat-chested, the neckline would be perfectly fierce. As is, her boobs look saggy (and I’m sure they aren’t).

    • Little_Olive

Never mind the squishing, that separation between east and west cannot be good.

      • I’ve never been a big fan of these canyon wide plunges. They always look more than a trifle desperate to me.

        • Patti Lever

           and tacky

  • I’m afraid to say anything.

    • sagecreek

      Me, too, Paula. Me, too.

  • Glammie

Not quite there for me.  Either narrower neckline or Jada 10 years ago would do it.  You need impeccable and reasonably perky cleavage to carry that kind er, neckline off.

  • RebeccaKW

It is pretty fierce in a Grace Jones way, it’s too bad Jada herself isn’t as fierce as Ms. Jones.  I don’t hate it on her.

These dresses always make me tired.  Like, you’d have to walk around ramrod straight, shoulders back for hours to keep your boob from slipping around or the shoulder thing getting wonky and poking someone in the eye.  I’m all for good posture, but this is more like POSTURE.

  • Bill Curtis

Her sternum looks harder than Kevlar.  Don’t mess with Jada!

  • janetjb

    She scares me.

I think that was her goal.

    • Caaro3

I know!  Every picture of her makes me want to quickly look away.  TLo points out I’m really afraid of “Brain Consumption”.

  • Susan Crawford

Too much information in the breastal area, Jada. But you DO look as though lasers are primed to shoot out of your eyes, so I’m moving quickly out of range.

  • Imasewsure

Jada ain’t no Grace Jones… I think she looks ridiculous

    • SpcilK

  • Aurumgirl

There’s something that isn’t quite right about it, but the colour is gorgeous on her.  I think this makes her look more severe than fierce–maybe that’s what isn’t “right” about it for me.

  • piecesofconfetti

But… she’s not Grace Jones. Leave this dress to Gaga.

    • Judih1

  • I respectfully disagree.  I think she’s too petite to try and pull this one off.  The difference between her and the model is tragic.

  • She needs to play a relative of Uhura’s in the next star trek movie.  Jada and Zoe Saldana would be fabulous.

  • SpcilK

Totally disagree, this is not the dress for her. Everytime I see a photo of her lately, she breaks my heart. Girlfriend is in Crisis! Look at her body language, the lack of make-up, nails, accessories or lack there of. This is a cry for help. Work on you girl and retun to the red carpet when you’re refreshed and ready.

  • NCDFan

She’s channeling Tina Turner from “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome”!

  • Judy_S

I do agree, thanks for the analysis. My quibble is that the sleeves are too long on her, such an easy fix.

  • Lina_bee

I hope Kat Graham is wearing this when she’s Jada’s age. FIERCE.

  • Wellworn

Too bony with the wide V.  I don’t mind seeing boobs that are natural and not like baby heads, but too much bony sternum and ribcage.  A tiny smile would have helped too.

  • Zippypie

Yes, she’s intense but man, this is just ugly. Shiny, silly bow, silly shoulder treatment. She looks exceptionally uncomfortable and her poor boobs look mashed and saggy, which I’m sure is not the impression she wanted to leave.

  • My horns can pierce the sky!

  • nannypoo

I’m bothered by more than a detail or two. Mostly I’m bothered by how damn ugly this is.

  • snich11

  • Yay Firefly reference!

    • Agreed!

“Also? I can kill you with my brain.”

  • Bony chests should not be flaunted. (Don’t tell her I said so, I’m very afraid.)

  • cleep1000

She just looks so unhappy! And stiff. Is she worried about a wardrobe malfunction? If so, don’t wear it, Jada!

  • sagecreek

OK, I’m trying to say this without crossing any TLo boundaries, but gaunt doesn’t work all that well after you’re, say, 35.

    • poggi

I think the pattern of the fabric really exaggerates that effect.  I might like this better with a sleeker fit on he arms and no pattern.

    • JasmineAM

A few lbs would look great on her.

  • pepper76

When your chest is bonier than the model’s, it’s time to ease up on the diet/workout regimen a bit.

  • Also, a killer bold lipstick would not be remiss. Still, she is full of WIN.

  • alyce1213

Ready for your mammogram, Ms Pinkett-Smith.

  • nancymae

She should have gone full fierce and worn the hat shown in the runway look. That would have completed her Borg, Empress of the Universe, look. She probably melts touchy paparazzi with her steely gaze.

    • YES! It would have been epic with the hat.

  • j_anson

I actually kind of love this. On the other hand, I kind of loved her sparkly pink pajamas, too. So maybe I just have a hitherto-unknown pro-Jada Pinkett Smith bias?

  • MilaXX

I like it and agree she should have played up the warrior aspect of it.

  • ballerinawithagun

I love it and you are correct about needing a her hair up and away. The model’s shoes weren’t correct either.

  • Little_Olive

I hear ya, TLo. But no.

  • amywinns

I know this is obvious, but I wish the shoulder cones were toned down from the runway look. A structure, even an exaggerated structure would still be interesting, but this takes it into caricature. I’m fine with all the other elements as a dramatic look, but that’s a point too far. Two points.

  • lordandtaylor

If only she would have worn the hat featured on the runway. Magic!

  • amf0001

Hair back with red nails,  and go for it lipstick…
But she look so pissed off (not sad but tense and angry) and not in a sexy controlled way

  • GorgeousThings

I think she’s gone a step beyond fierce. She looks pissed. Like, “I’m gonna kick the dog and punch a wall when I get home” pissed.

  • MzzPants

Fierce as hell, though I agree about the ponytail.

  • Not good.

  • Jess5628

Fiercely awesome, but the sleeves need to be fitted better — they’re kind of baggy, which detracts from the sleekness.

  • She is missing the hat.

  • My only quibble with what really is a fabulous look, is that she still looks like she’d rather be anyplace else but there. Dang, she looks sad! I sure hope she’s happier than she’s been looking the last couple weeks on her RC photos. No one deserves to be that sad.

  • Something about the way it fits on Jada is throwing off the lines.  The sharpness should work for her, but something like this needs to be flawlessly fitted, and it’s just…not.  Set it free, and send it to the Audreybot.

  • CRH

Reminds me of the great Tina Turner in Mad Max.

  • girliecue

She looks like she’s been gift-wrapped.

  • girliecue

She looks like she’s been gift-wrapped.

  • ccm800

Exactly! ya can’t go halfway with a dress like this.

  • ErmengardeGreen

Agree with the criticisms, but I love this look.

  • BuffaloBarbara

I’m really not a fan of that huge plunging neckline that designers seem to like.  At best, it looks okay, as long as you keep your shoulders really, really far back.  At worst?  It shows off parts of the body that tend to be kind of bony and none too attractive when highlighted in this manner (that’s presuming it’s worn by someone in good shape).  The sternum is just not the most attractive part of the female body.  You want a nice scoop neck showing off miles of décolletage, I’m usually fairly good with it.  Nothing unattractive about breasts.  But going down the center like that, shoving the breasts off to the side in favor of showing off, essentially, the part of the male body that people like to look at… it just doesn’t seem attractive on a woman.  Now, boy center-chest?  That, I’d take more of. ;p

(Also, why does the photographer hate her? He apparently caught her in the middle of saying something harsh to someone–mouth open and grimacing, eyes saying, “Listen here, you.” She’s a lovely woman. Surely, she can be caught with some other expression on her face.)

  • Ogden1990

Are those croissants on your shoulders or are you just happy to see us?

  • greyhoundgirl

The dress is a beautiful color.  But the style highlights her boniness–not attractive–makes her look harder but not fiercer.

  • Judih1

as usual, TLO always has the right commentary

  • my little quibbles are:  (1)  the tie up thing hanging down over her personal area is bugging me.  (2)  this is not the best color with her skin tone.  more color in the makeup maybe?  (3)  her chest and sternum area is looking less than attractive.  the model, who i’m sure has 0% body fat much like jada does, seems to have avoided this bony look somehow.  perhaps a little powder to tone down the shine would help.

alright, enough bitching here.  wish she had worn the hat…now THAT would be AWESOME!

  • JeanProuvaire

My first thought was “Wow, she’s serving up Chronicles of Riddick realness.” She looks like a Necromonger.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though.

  • EEKstl

  • unbornfawn

Sorry, she doesn’t have the chest for that dress.

    • MrsJoe

I can’t exactly tell what’s going on with her chest.  It’s like her chest was too small the fill out the center of the dress, but large enough that the had to pull each breast way to the side to keep it in.  It’s also difficult to tell if her breasts are fake and badly done, or if she nursed her children and ended up this way, or if she’s got badly positioned tape doing terrible things.  I don’t really recall her chest standing out one way or another recently though, so I’m inclined to say it’s all just due to a really really bad dress.

      • unbornfawn

I don’t know. Her breasts are fine. There is a gaunt shallowness to her chest that doesn’t look attractive to me.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

That is one beautiful color!  Having said that, her features are so angular and the shoulders on the dress accentuate that.  Eliminate the shoulder points and the bow thing or whatever that is, and I think it would be a nicer dress.  Not a big fan of the neckline plunging down to there….

  • If she turns her head to sneeze she’s going to put an eye out.

  • BrooklynBomber

    I’m frightened.

  • guest2visits

Even though I think her hair and make-up are perfect; and that she looks good here, – I ‘m just not liking this dress’s shoulder
spikes.  It’s ok on the runway but kind of odd looking off it. Like it’s trying too hard. Not terrible though.

  • TomBord

greasy and mean. ladies pay attn: that’s the face one grows when married to a gay dude.

  • butterflysunita

I love the hat on the runway model.

  • Beth G

Are we not going to address the 30 different shades of skin color?

  • GTrain

    It’s too… severe for me.

  • She looks so unhappy to be there. A wicked grin might turn the look around; this just looks glum.

  • Rebecca Jay

That ain’t fierce.  It’s just f’n frightning.  As in Freddy Krueger nightmares scary. Right down to the filed-to-a-knifepoint nails.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

I like the dress on her. And I’m jealous of her muscles.

  • She’s staying with the Men in Black theme by dressing as some sort of alien reptile hybrid.

  • CMS

Oh, she SO should have worn the hat too…

  • I think she looks great, one thing she really understands with her clothes is proportion.  She’s only 5 feet tall and yet the dress is as perfectly proportioned on her as it is on the runway model who is probably a foot taller than she is.  She knows where her sleeves and hems need to hit with a 1/4 inch and the neckline has been precisely altered to her frame.  Even the bow has been scaled down. Really well done!

  • LambeeBaby

I think a fit woman is great, BUT as you noted, she needs to play up her softness. I don’t like the neckline it is showing too much of her muscular chest and it makes her waist look non existent. No good Jada.

  • Lisa

She’s just too intense, the dress is too intense, the boobs are too intense – the whole look is just “Sharp Edges” all the way around.

  • The differences between Jada Fierce and Tilda Fierce? Discuss.

  • She should have worn that hat!

  • PeaceBang

She should have had the dress made to her proportions. The shoulders look ridiculous. The proportions on the model are fierce. Not on Mrs. Smith.

  • formerlyAnon

I dunno. I immediately thought “grace jones” as well, but did not find the comparison to her benefit.

Her sternum & clavicle look, well, bird-like and scrawny. Not EVEN in Ms. Jones’ league when it comes to quiet & sexy menace.

  • she is what I call the “hysterical red carpet presence” because looking at her gives me the vapors and I fear lasers are going to shoot out of her boobs and blind me.

  • Jennifer Coleman

I see your points, but this dress is best carried off by a long drink of water with a very long torso, as seen with the model above. Jada looks like she’s wearing the doll’s version of the dress.

  • bluefish

All of the Pinkett-Smiths departing the public stage for an extended period would make me a happy camper.  She looks haggard and ridiculous.  Star Trek cocktails on the holodeck dress.

  • frankystein123

I hate the look. The model on the runway on the other hand, she made the outfit look fierce. The peacock-like hat is pretty sweet too.
