Cannes Watch: Heidi Klum in Marchesa

Posted on May 25, 2012

Okay, first off: this is probably one of our favorite Kluminator looks ever.

Heidi Klum attends the ‘The Paperboy’ premiere during the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival in a Marchesa gown.

Marchesa Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Karolina Kurkova

She looks stunning, no? Excellent deployment of the illusion netting; you can barely see it until you’re up close. But what do we all think of what she did to the fringe? The runway version was clearly too shapeless for the Fraulein here, but re-arranging the fringe exposes the bust, which doesn’t actually seem to fit her that well. It’s a stunning look overall, but that one bit is making it less than a WERQ.

Her hair’s really pretty, though.

Oh. I was going to say absolutely gorgeous dress, shame about the hair! Still, good look overall.

    • Sobaika

Fabulous! Hard to believe this is the same woman who was recently featured wearing a dashiki.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

      She looks amazing, yes.  Definitely.
But…and this is such a nit, it’s like how DARE I even say this..but without the long fringe, you can see sort of a “belly swoop” that is odd to me.  There’s a ton going on with this dress.  It’s kind of overwhelming.

      • mountainFashionista

“There’s a ton going on with this dress.  It’s kind of overwhelming.”

This is how I always feel about Marchesa.  Oh wait, I think there was one that I liked a few months ago.

    • http://twitter.com/holocausticity E. Sevilla

it looks better without all that hair hanging out of her boobs. i really really really love this one, changes and all.

    • mozzer0906

Definitely did her bust no favors.  The exposure on her hips makes it look ill-fitted too.

    • ccinnc

The runway version is more elegant.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=601016544 Amy J Albin

      She is stunning!

    • slightlybitterkitten

I’ll give her an “IN,” but just barely.  I love the dress, but I think it makes her torso look a bit odd… In other words, it’s neither as flattering to her waist or to her bust as it could be.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I agree completely!  Lovely woman and gorgeous dress, but IMHO it makes her look rather wide through the waist.  Still, I’d give her an in.  Those earrings are to die for!

      • Chantelle James

Or her butt, which looks kind of flat and weird because of the swoop placement.

    • Terri Mabry Pendleton

did not even see the netting until i read what you said about it, which was that…one does not even see the netting. i even think the bust looks good, so i am way in love with this.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

Works for me. IN by miles.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1775610958 Debby Lovinger Teicher

I don’t remember Heidi looking so soft and beautiful in the recent past. THIS is how you do it.

    • http://twitter.com/siao siao

The bust is a bit odd, but Heidi looks great overall. I’m glad she got rid of the fringe, the dress looks like a hot mess on the model because of all that frippery.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She looks amazing in this. And it would take a woman with her runway skills to carry off such an OTT dress as this.  Most other famous women would be swallowed whole by it, never to be seen again.

    • BrooklynBomber

The shape is good on her, but the dress is just so damn busy. Every once in a while Marchesa turns out something that doesn’t make me want to spit, and I thought this might be one of them . . . but alas. To me, it’s more successful as a concept than an actual dress.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I like it better with the fringe pulled back. I don’t really notice any ill-fitting-ness in the bust. But yeah – I had NO IDEA that was illusion netting. Very beautifully done!

    • EiEiOh

I don’t like the dress or her hair.  I think the dress makes her look thick … which she obviously isn’t.  The hair looks okay from the back but too much bangage is left out of the chignon.

      • ballerinawithagun

I agree with you. She has no waist in this! Hate the crotch area. I do like her hair and at least she is covered appropriately for her age and number of children.

As far as the netting is concerned…I know the gown is too heavy to be completely backless, but in this case, I think sets of crisscrossing straps would have looked more glamorous.

        • ccinnc

I’m beginning to think she IS a little thick-waisted. We’ve seen her here in several dresses in which she has appeared thick. Maybe it’s not the dress. And after 4 kids, it’s to be expected. For that reason, I think the runway version might’ve suited her better, left something to the imagination.

          • Qitkat

A lot of us would *kill* for her figure, whether we’ve had kids or not.
I do think you may be correct, that she (understandably) doesn’t quite have the Victoria’s Secret figure any longer.

            • http://twitter.com/noshadejustT Teri

I agree, there is no way she’s thick waisted- not in real life, anyway. Maybe she doesn’t have her VS figure anymore, but I’m putting the blame entirely on this dress. Her top half looks like a marshmallow! Thanks Marchesa, for making Heidi Klum look this way. For shame.

    • http://www.facebook.com/luv2birdie Elana Bryan

She looks good, but I’m not sure if I’d say IN because I’m not digging the hair and her bust looks odd ….Nicole Kidman’s rose-colored dress from yesterday however…hope you post that one!

    • Violina23

I like it better from the side than the front — the top looks a bit awkward, she doesn’t look like she’s totally comfortable in that shape.  But I give her all the credit in the world for (mostly) pulling it off in a way I doubt many could even dream about.

    • Anathema_Device

I’m glad you told me that was illusion netting in the back, because I thought she had car seat marks on her back. So, that knocks a few points off for me.

I think the fringe changes are fine, but I think she probably should have just ditched the fringe altogether. I don’t like the bordello lampshade effect on her arms.

    • SewingSiren

I think this looks very elegant on her. The way the fringe has been arranged on her arms in kind of a fringe “bun” is rather nice..

I think she is wearing some kind of bust minimizer so the gown will hang more or less straight down.

    • uprightcitizen

Didn’t Streisand wear this to the Harmonia Gardens in “Hello Dolly”?

    • MilaXX

She looks great, but if she was going to remove the fringe from the front I wish she had taken it off the sleeves as well.

      • SewingSiren

I don’t think the fringe is removed. It looks like she (or her stylist more like) rolled it as if it were hair on to the upper arm to form sleeves.

        • angryparsnip

Thank you for pointing that out.
I like the fringe sleeves on the model better because the way the stylist has them it looks like the stuff deposed dictators wear on their uniforms.

          cheers,  parsnip

          • SewingSiren

            Epaulets. :)

        • mountainFashionista

Good catch — I couldn’t tell exactly what was going on there until you pointed it out.

    • RzYoung

I also prefer the fringing on the run way version, but she certainly looks stunning!

    • amf0001

I don’t like this dress at all. It looks heavy and uncomfortable and makes her look thicker than she is,  and I hate the illusion netting…

    • BazoDee

I love the dress but this seems more like a “girl this is not your dress” -it makes her look hippy (in a bad way) and flat chested. Throw in the illusion netting and I just can’t get behind this.

    • marilyn

I think this dress makes her hips look big.  We all know Heidi is gorgeous and does not have big hips.  It also makes her bust disappear.  We all know Heidi has boobs.  So, I am not as in love with this dress as everyone else is.  I think Heidi deserves better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I like that she deleted all the fringe over her chest, and should have done so with the fringe on her arms…they just look like tacky tassles.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

I mostly like what they did with the fringe – exposing the actual bodice of the dress and making the little cap sleeves…but I don’t like the excess hanging down the back at the shoulders.  From some angles it looks like fabulous pit hair.

    • Anna Tree

I am not so sold. I think she looks like she Scarlett O’Hara’d that dress out of some really expensive Versailles curtains.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

All I can think of is my seventh grade art project with a ton of seed beads, beading thread, and one determined cat. I was vacuuming beads out of the carpet for months!

Her face looks very soft and pretty but the dress makes her waist look thick which I cannot believe. But I like what I can see of her shoes – no platforms!

      • Qitkat

        *snort*
        one determined cat

    • Judy_J

I like the fringe treatment on the runway version.  The Heidi version reminds me of tie-backs on drapery, and points up the fact that it does not quite fit in the bust.  But she does look really pretty.  I love the earrings.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I like it. Hint of nekkid without being actually see-through. Much sexier than letting it all show!

    • 3boysful

I agree with the many “not-as-flattering-as-it-should-be”, and “too busy” comments, but I do really like the neckline that the bust and cap sleeve thingies give it.

    • CassieLee22

Not as flattering to the hips, but still looks GORGEOUS

    • fringebenefit

Flawless. Dress was made for her and looks far better on her than on the model. Hair, accessories perfect. One of the best looks at Cannes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austen-Jane/100002245814326 Austen Jane

She is indisputably a gorgeous woman, but I can’t get behind this being your favorite look for her. I agree with the others that note that it flatters neither her waist nor breasts. Just not all that flattering, overall.

    • MoHub

I like the draping of the runway version, but Heidi couldn’t just stop at shiny; she had to make it tight as well. Let’s just be thankful she didn’t complete the trifecta by making it short.

    • lrhoff

My first thought was that it makes her look very wide.  I’m missing the fringe, especially in the back.  On the model (not Heidi), it was beautiful draping down the back.  She clearly is feeling the glamour, though.

    • leftcoastpickle

Ms. Klum is gorgeous, as usual, but the dress I have a problem with. I think that she looks pregnant from the front! The circular design in the belly area is giving me the optical illusion of coming at me like a basketball. The side photo looks fantastic, but I can’t get over this circular pregnant belly illusion. And the shot of the back isn’t doing it for me either. I’m not a Marchesa fan. I prefer the dress on the model. (I should also note I liked Ms. Klum in the dashiki, so there’s that.)

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

LOVE! I thought I’d never see an incidence of illusion netting I could ever get behind, but I am justly proven wrong.

    • PastryGoddess

What happened to her boobs?  Fraulein Klum has a body to shame the gods and you can barely see it here.  The dress is nice and all, but I thought clothes were supposed to accentuate the body, not hide the goodies behind a fringe wrapper

    • guest2visits

This is much prettier on Heidi than the model. Whatever changes were made to the dress transformed it into something
alot more flattering.  Cute hair, but I almost think the earrings look a little dated, or faux.

    • ConnieBV

Her crotch is sticking its tongue out at me. OUT

    • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Helen

dont  love the shape,  it makes her waist bigger than  her bust, it also makes her belly look like  3-month pregnant.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I like the runway version of the dress better, but Heidi still looks head-to-toe gorgeous. It’s a WERQ for me!

    • Qitkat

She looks very beautiful here. I also love the hair.
Best illusion netting deployment I’ve ever seen. I had to look 3 times to really see it.
Doesn’t this seem like the sort of dress that’s really difficult to get in and out of?
[I know, bad to end sentence in a preposition, couldn't figure out another way, lol]
Same with KM’s sequin dress. (getting in and out of, damn, did it again!)

    • sashaychante

The movement of the fringe on the model is really beautiful.  IMO, sweeping the fringe back takes away from the swooshy, light feeling of the dress.  Overall, Heidi looks good here, and FINALLY some shoes that are feminine enough for an evening dress.  I’m not a fan of the flat look of her hair, but overall, she looks really pretty.

    • bluefish

A Marchesa we can all get behind.  HK looks sensational and I love low slung chignon.  Beautiful.  She will be remarried in 15 minutes if she wants to be.  And note the longed for return of the delicate, feminine shoe!

    • TxMom2011

BEAUTIFUL dress.  Wish I could touch it.

    • MzzPants

She’s probably the only one on the planet who could rock this dress, and rocking it she is.

Glad the boob fringe got rearranged—less hippie, more vintage.

    • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

She should have kept the fringe.  She’s lost her waist a bit, not surprisingly after four kids, and the fringe would have disguised that a little more.

And since my first thought was ‘wow, hasn’t she got a wrinkly back’ I’m not sure the illusion netting is particularly well deployed.

    • Lina_bee

Hrm. Rearranging the fringe helped the neckline’s shape a lot, but the total effect flattens the whole bodice and makes her look wider than she is. Unfortunate, since I rather like the dress.

    • Sara__B

I disagree with you boys. This dress doesn’t suit her body type. She looks great, because she’s Heidi Klum and she knows how to work a gown, but she’s looked better.

    • Judih1

She looks great, but every time I see her I can’t help but think I wish she and Seal were still together. I was really hoping they would be one of the celebrities that could go the distance in their relationship. They were a blended family, a biracial family, a two career family, renewed their wedding vows every year. Just saying’ wish they could have pulled through

      • holdmewhileimnaked

i agree. but it doesnt sound like it was her fault, though. & it’s really sad. i feel bad for her. i dont even like to think about it.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Krysta

It makes her looks so square and waistless!  I like the runway version better, but it might not have looked so awesome in a standing-still red carpet shot.

    • lilazander

I love the ensamble, she looks radiant.

    • BuffaloBarbara

She looks so much better than the runway model!  That explains why Heidi made the big bucks, doesn’t it?

      And I love the alterations.

    • lojoso

It does strange things to her body. In the first picture I thought she was pregnant!
      No, no nonono.
How odd for TLo to get it wrong :(

    • PeggyOC

All the outward swooping shapes are actually making her look thick through the middle and kind of hippy here.  Which we know she’s not.  Still, points for a sexy look that still keeps everything covered.  Sometimes more is less, Heidi.

    • PeggyOC

    • michelle shields

I think she looks great! Well done schnitzel!

    • holdmewhileimnaked

theres something wrong w/ the way it fits. which is rotten luck, too, cos elsewise it looks really good. she doesnt need it, it’s the fault of the dress, but some power in the illusion might have helped, if i make sense. otoh, what else mightve helped is, perhaps, some better seaming/fitting of the midsection.

i like all the fringe in the runway version but understand how quickly & easily it could descend into where the wild things are territory [RIP MS], glitzy party division.

    • Call me Bee

Stunning!  I love that she pulled back that fringe–gives the dress an entirely different look.  Love her hair!  A nice updo that’s not too serious.  Well done, Fraulein Heidi.  Sie sind sehr schön!

    • Tatiana Luján

I don’t like the way ir fits her at all: it makes she look flat chested and sqare waisted.

    • SapphoPoet

      Lovely.

    • greatscoutm

Dreamy. My fave Marchesa dress thus far.

    • AnaRoW

I want to like it because I like the overall silvery-sparkly look but I really hate that dress. The neckline doesn’t work for her and her butt looks both flat and lumpy.

    • Lilithcat

Hate the fringe at the shoulders, really hate the “here are my lady bits” flap.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Honestly? I think the dress makes her look chunky. She doesn’t have enough going on up top to break up the line from her waist. The fringe change just highlights it.

    • PeaceBang

She looks radiant from the neck up. The dress has wiped out her shape. Amazing how the wrong dress can make even such a one as the Klum look flat and wide.

    • Susan Crawford

No. Sorry, but something about this  look screams PAGEANT to me. Love the earrings, though!

    • butterflysunita

Shiny and tight but not short.  She looks fabulous.  And yes, that is great illusion netting–didn’t even notice it until you pointed it out.

    • Judy_S

Thanks for explaining the fringe thing. I like the dress on the model but not on her, and it does have to do with the bust. Even then it looks good from the side, but from the front… nah. My thought is that she’s just too busty for the dress but now I think it’s the extra lines added by the fringe swept aside.
      She looks pretty anyway.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

      Nice!

    • unbornfawn

She looks FLAT and straight from the bust to the waist. Don’t mind that she tried to fit it to her curves a little better, its just not working. Too bad she removed some of the fringe. The movement would have been really great.  I bet this dress was amazing in person.

    • formerlyAnon

I bet this was absolutely STUNNING in motion.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Martha-Hicks-Leta/1059884884 Martha Hicks Leta

I think the woman is gorgeous, but I don’t like what the dress does to her bust. I think she should have let the fringe swing or, barring that, had the bust restructured. Still, if I saw her in person, I’d have to avert my eyes because she’s too gorgeous to look upon without some sort of filter.

    • Funkykatt

I don’t know, I think it makes her look shapeless. For sure, not a WERQ

    • quiltrx

      Killer dress.

    • http://twitter.com/anibellee Lynsey M.

Yikes.  I think this is really unflattering for her.  It makes her boobs look flat but with a wide waist/hip area.  From the side you can tell she’s as in shape as ever but from the front I thought she looked pregnant again.  Not what you want in a dress.

    • http://twitter.com/ThisIsNotEmber John Watson

Really? I dont think its flattering at all in her waist area, i cant unsee the giant belly it makes her look like she has. Which im positive she doesnt actually.

    • butter nut

i am sitting here wagging my finger at the computer, shouting, “YES, gurl!”

    • http://twitter.com/lareveuse lareveuse

The hair is great. The dress I would have preferred with the fringe. LOVE that Kurkova was the model, not some 15 year old wraith. A dress with that much beading, etc. is tough to make look anything but flat due to the weight. The fringe added interest and modernity–as she made it, it’s pageant/Barbie/aging starlet territory. Too bad, because it was a really interesting idea. Heidi’s got some major issues if she still thinks she needs to show off her body 24/7. It’s not like we don’t all bow down to her anyway. She’s earned a bit of riding on the personality time.

    • saanrio

I actually really like what she did with the fringe.  The runway version felt a little blah to me with it just hanging.

    • Lisa Kramp

I like that she pulled the fringe off the front. On the model, the fringe is what you notice first. With it over the shoulders, it becomes what it should be…icing on a great dress! The illusion netting is perfect here, too.

    • golspie

Superb. She has achieved that nirvana that all women seek to achieve, when poise seamlessly takes over from youth as the main component of her beauty.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

She really looks beautiful here…dress, hair, and make-up.

    • LinXGUA

      I Love the hair

    • Lisa

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! It’s nice to see her look like the goddess she is, and not like some desperate divorcee.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Antoinette-Niebieszczanski/100000014705925 Antoinette Niebieszczanski

The jewelry, hair and makeup are fantabulous.  Sadly, the view from behind makes her butt look angry.

    • http://twitter.com/Selkiechick Selkiechick

It reminds me a bit of Michael Costello’s mop dress…

    • http://frockpaperscissors.blogspot.com/ kvlm

When I first saw it and didn’t realize it was fringed to the nth, I thought it was very mother of the bride.  But now I see the detail and I love.
