Cannes Watch: Diane Kruger in Versus

Posted on May 16, 2012

It appears that Diane has decided that Cannes is the perfect place to say, “Fuck that ‘fashionista’ bullshit. I’ma make you WANT this.”

Diane Kruger at Feature Film Jury Photocall during the 65th Annual Cannes in a Versus dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Versus Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kolfinna Kristofersdottir

Jimmy Choo ‘Katima’ Strappy Sandal

To which we can only say, “Brava, darling,” as we do practically any time a lady ditches the lady business and goes out in one of her “Man, I feel like a woman” getups. This is sexy and skin-baring, with the lacing giving it a naughty feel, all of which works for her in that “Touch me and I’ll spank you” kind of way. But sweetie, can we just say the effect would be greatly enhanced if you wore a stronger lip color and did something with your hair other than tuck it behind your ears like you’re in the middle of scrubbing something?

Also: Are Jimmy Choos now mandated by law on the red carpet?

    Yikes.  S&M cheerleader much?

    • AmandaCathleen

HA! Now that you’ve said it I can’t unsee it

    • AudreysMom

exactly. I caught myself thinking “Helen of Troy: cheerleader”

    • ziarah

Seriously. This looks like something out of the Fredericks of Hollywood catalog.

  • Needs more Joshua Jackson

    • Jill_3

       Always. Always with the Pacey.

I do think she looks hot as shit, though.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I bet you anything Jimmy Choo hired a new PR firm this season. This is some serious brand revamping for a shoe company that, let’s face it, stagnated even during Sex and the City, once Carrie “discovered” Manolo Blahnik.

    • makeityourself

Maybe it has something to do with Tamara Mellon being bought out and kicked out. I don’t know the inside scoop on any of this. I’m just guessing.

  • Very Xena.

  • halleygee

I hate the dress but love the shoes.

    • Spicytomato1

      I’m with you.

      • Allison Woods

         Aye. Nice shoesies.

  • This bitch. She can wear anything and look fierce. Anyone else would look like a streetwalker, but she manages to sort of work it. Don’t get me wrong – I hate the dress. But imagine what it would look like on, say, Mariah. Gross.

    • fursa_saida

Why did you have to make me imagine that.

    • deathandthestrawberry

Ha! But Mariah would wear it two sizes too small.

  • Lina_bee

I love this so much from the waist up, but that skirt screams cocktail waitress so hard. I agree re the hair — she has such thin, baby-fine hair & it never seems to do what she thinks it’s doing. Still, she looks great…if like she’s got a drinks tray hidden just out of frame.

    • Spicytomato1

I’ve always thought that about her hair, too. At least she’s natural and hasn’t gone for extensions to thicken it. Not sure what would be a good solution for her, hair-wise. Short pixie ‘do maybe? She does have a beautiful face. But most women in Hollywood seem to fear short hair.

      • J MN

At first I thought maybe it was the humidity that flattened out her hair but you’re right, it usually doesn’t look very full.  As one with fine hair what I’ve learned: The longer it is the ‘stringier’ it will look, the weight pulls it down.  Having layers helps give it loft and a fuller look.  Don’t use too much conditioner or product.  Shoulder length would be great and still versatile.

    • mountainFashionista

       Waitress at Caesars Palace…

  • Maluca

Neck down is working it! Neck up needs more effort. Her waist is TINY though!

  • PeaceBang

Weimar Republic Cigarette Girl. The lack of hair and make-up make me WEEP because this could have been so divinely inspired.

    • Beardslee

Great image!  Only she’d need to lug around a duffle bag to carry all the cash needed to buy a pack of cigarettes and that would dampen down the look.

  • AmandaCathleen

Not sure I’m a fan of the dress anyway (esp after @kimmeister:disqus ‘s “S&M cheerleader” comment, but I completely agree on the hair/makeup. Both need a boost here.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i love the dress, i love the shoes–& i usually do not like jimmy choo shoes. [for some reason i’m falling asleep; were i not, i’d settle that into a very nice seussian rhythm for you. ah well.]

  • I hate dresses that cut into the waist like that. It gives off a disturbing distorted hourglass feeling.

    • mountainFashionista

Yeah, I know she’s not shaped like that, but the illusion is really strong.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I love the “Bitch, I am fabulous” smirk on her face.  And her shoes.

  • Ali

I really, really hate this on her. Actually, I’d probably hate this dress on anyone. The sides look like a third grade sewing project. Ugh.

    • NC_Meg

Ditto. The lace up…thing will never not look cheap and tacky to me.

  • Sara__B

The length of the dress looks awkward on her, especially with her trademark pigeon-toed stance, but she looks very resort-sexy.

  • SpcilK

She has a great body and the dress fits well enough… But, she doesn’t have the spirit or fire that is required to pull off a frock like this. When you don’t even bother to brush your hair, put on make – up, or accessorize properly why bother to get dressed at all.

  • hillmad

    “Flintstones” cheerleader!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Wonder if getting into that dress is like playing cat’s cradle?

  • I normally don’t like Jimmy Choos but these are FAB.
And I agree with WendyD: needs more JJ.

  • Vlasta Bubinka

Love the shoes, but damn, that dress is so whore tennis player trying to “do” Wimbledon.

  • Super_Red

I really shouldn’t like this dress, but I can’t help it- she looks great. And it looks so much better on her than on the model.

  • MilaXX

Definitely needs a stronger lip and better hair.

  • BrooklynBomber

    Oh, that’s just silly!

  • EEKstl

I’m not in love with this but those shoes are FAB.

  • LOVE IT. From head to toe. Don’t understand why people think that sexy and daring can’t be fashionable? It’s 2012 people.

  • The shoes are fab.  The dress is meh for me.  I don’t think it’s all that exciting and the way it’s cut makes her body shape look a bit strange.

  • kikisayshi

I actually like the barely-there makeup with this. And those shoes are killa.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Sexy vixen tennis dress! The red in it really brings out the green in her eyes. She would look perfect with a lighter more summery shoe.

  • She really does look gorgeous here.

I’m usually not a shoe person, but these shoes and the other strappy Jimmy Choos that have been making the rounds are finally making me understand what Carrie Bradshaw was talking about all those years.

  • hughman

She looks like a cocktail waitress at TGITrampoline to me.

  • Rand Ortega

Like a Catholic schoolgirl trying/failing to bring the hotness.
No smolder, no makeup to enhance the missing smolder.
    Not impressed in the slightest.

  • Jecca2244

I feel like the Cannes FF is the land of dressing up but forgetting about your hair and makeup.

  • 3boysful

Despite the fact that the dress reminds me of a deck chair, I like this.  And I like the shoes, too.

  • Laurie Bergman

The bodice looks like a sun chair cover, and yet she is working it hard.  I admire that.

    • DaringMiss

I totally agree.  It is like she saw the chair on the balcony of the hotel and said “Hey, that would look cute!”

  • She looks great.

  • Scarlet39

    I just hate this dress

  • PeggyOC

Wow. When we say this girl can make almost anything look good, remember that “anything” now includes a top that was taken from a lawn chair I own.  Complete with the strapping.

  • I love it!

  • I love it. Hate her hair though. That “just woke up” look needs to GO.

I think Jimmy Choos are coming back in vogue. Everybody is going away from the Loubou mega-platforms towards a less exaggerated look and Jimmy Choo is coming with some very sexy shoes.

  • This would look trashy on probably anyone else in the world, but she’s pulling it off.

  • Gotta hand it to this woman. She isn’t afraid to wear fashion and I give her major props for that, even when I don’t love the outcome. There are only a few women on the red carpet who I genuinely anticipate seeing, and Diane is on that list (along with Zoe Saldana, Tilda Swinton, Keira Knightley and Cate Blanchett).

  • That’s a WOW look.

  • janetjb

Her face has faded to nothing

  • understateddiva

Ah, she just got dumped too, I see.

  • Vodeeodoe

If I had -000% body fat, I would totally wear this too. I would Xena accessorize the sh*t out of it though. Rawr!

  • elizabeth williams

    Lawn chair cover

  • guest2visits

Wow. A dress designed for the event; it almost looks like the photographers are going to fall over each other in a pile.
She looks stunning, shoes and all; though the dress is clearly art for the moment.

  • She’s WERQing it. But you know how you don’t like the comments on the physical attributes? Yeah – really having to bite my tongue.

  • TieDye64

Sexy trampoline dress. Yep, she’s werking it, but I do wish she’d gone all the way with it with some killer hair and makeup.

  • BazoDee

I hate it and love it simultaneously. It could use some improved hair and make-up -but let’s face it – no one is looking at her hair and makeup.
And leave those shoes alone – I’ve been drooling over them since I saw Jennifer Lawrence wear them to the Late show.

  • KikiB1

Needs some fierce posture and a pedi, STAT

  • erinbinek

I can’t put my finger on why, but I love this.  Except for the hair and makeup, of course.

  • Susan Crawford

A little “Game of Thrones” effect going on here, much? She needs a couple of baby dragons clinging to her side-lacing.

  • terekirkland

I feel like this outfit needs an edgy metal throwing necklace that mystically returns to you once thrown at a string of bad guys to knock them out…

  • TheOriginalLulu

    I hate those shoes.
She looks hot in that dress without looking vulgar and that’s hard to argue with. I agree that she needed some sexy hair.

  • marilyn

Only at Cannes does this look right…..

  • Sophie Collier

Cute dress.  Those shoes remind me of that gawd awful Chanel swimsuit from yesterday’s post, though.  And I am sick of Jimmy Choo too.  And Louboutin.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

  • giiiirrrr

I would that love dress to be three inches longer, but really, HAWT.

  • look at that guy behing her, can you blame the pervert?

  • I’ll take Jimmy Choos anytime over Laboutins. Shoes should be pretty no?
I do love the dress. It’s very interesting and very clean lines and chic. but yeah…the hair.

  • A_Rimbaud

    She’s stunning. As usually.

  • SorayaS

I respectfully disagree TLo, a strong lip and hairdo would have taken this look too far. Her “girl next door” face serves as a good contrast to the “bad girl” dress. She is so fabulous.

  • bellafigura1

She looks like she’s about to go to the bridge to let the Captain know that the transporters are ready.

  • Beth G

I’m thinking a scoliosis checking wouldn’t be a bad thing for her.  Everything just looks crooked.

  • kerry dee

what an amazing dress. it looks better on her than the model.

  • Anathema_Device

I’m not really loving this. All I see is a Caesar’s Palace waitress uniform put together with hammock strings.

Can’t deny that she is beautiful and has a great body.  I do love the shoes.

  • Anathema_Device

I’m not really loving this. All I see is a Caesar’s Palace waitress uniform put together with hammock strings.

Can’t deny that she is beautiful and has a great body.  I do love the shoes.

  • lucasuk82

Does she ever NOT have gym hair?

  • Warrior89

Bungee cheerleader.  Do not like.  Also – paint your toenails.

  • I hate the dress and I hatehateHATE the hair and makeup, but that is an inspired shoe choice for this dress. Girl knows what she’s doing.

  • GTrain

  • ccm800

I thought Natalie Portman went blonde when first I saw this.

  • To gladiator for me.  Maybe if it were longer…..naw.

  • It Hurt’s To Be In Love

  • Zena Warrior Princess – is the dress made of leather? Judging from the rubbing visible on the seams in the close-up beneath the photo of the dress on the model, I think so…

  • Diego!

I think she looks great! I love her shoes

  • I really thought this was a gown until I clicked open the post!  I’d like it better if it was indeed a gown, short it just looks too Xena for me.

  • MoHub

It took me a few looks, but I’ve finally figured this out. It’s a butcher’s apron but tailored. She just forgot to put clothes on under it.

  • Melissa Brogan

Her hair is driving me nuts.

  • AWS

I think the dress is so strong the make-up works.

  • Cathy S

Wow. I like it. I wouldn’t have thought I would because I don’t go for that, but she looks great. I hate her shoes though.

  • fursa_saida

Please don’t let this mean there are problems between her and Pacey. Pleeeaaaaaase.

  • luciaphile

Original Star Trekkish on the dress, but I have to say I love the shoes.

  • I love this! Love it. Love, love, love! She looks amazing.

  • Shannon Maxham

Tennis outfit made out of a lawn chair.

  • 3rdsister

Femme sauvage — don’t even think about trying to cross her.

  • NurseEllen

Her smile says it all.  She feels HOT and she looks HOT.  Amazing job.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    hate it.

  • lilazander

That is a one big ass hooker dress, simply fugly. I like the shoes, though.
